The Original Misfits Rip Through 20-Song Set at Coachella
Glenn Danzig in Portlandia (2011)
Horror-punk legends The Original Misfits took the stage at Coachella late Saturday night (April 12th), ripping through a 20-song set at the massive festival in Indio, California.

The band launched into “Death Comes Ripping” to kick off the set, which began with a few technical issues but sorted itself out a few songs in. Frontman Glenn Danzig engaged the crowd throughout, at one point asking if there were any goth girls in the audience before playing “Vampira,” a song about the “original goth girl.”

A circle pit soon broke out, as the Misfits played favorites like “Where Eagles Dare,” “Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight?,” “Earth A.D.” and “Skulls.”

Prior to “Horror Business,” Danzig introduced the band, featuring classic members Jerry Only (bass) and Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein (guitar) alongside Dave Lombardo (drums) and Acey Slade (guitar).

Danzig and company closed out the main set with the all-time classic “Last Caress,...

Manny Martinez, Early Misfits Drummer, Dead at 69
Image
Manny Martinez, an early drummer for the Misfits, has died as the age of 69.

Depending on the interpretation of the Misfits timeline, Martinez was either the first or second Misfits drummer, forming a lineup with classic members Jerry Only and Glenn Danzig. However, Martinez was definitely the first drummer to appear on an official recording with the band, and actually helped introduce Only and Danzig to one another.

Martinez’s friend Zach Rector shared the news of the drummer’s passing on Facebook:

“Going to miss you Brother Manny Martinez / A true living legend a student of Buddy Rich I remember Manny telling me Multiple occasions of Buddy bringing up his chops while coming up, & his stories of his family’s notorious bar …An Original Misfits period. All around stand up guy, talking always about working and the progress on my house I’d call him up & talk alot about...

Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and Montgomery Clift in Les désaxés (1961)
10 Movies That Inspired The Misfits
Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, and Montgomery Clift in Les désaxés (1961)
The collision of punk rock and heavy metal with horror movies and sci-fi has resulted in some of the greatest bands of all time. Chief among them are The Misfits, who combined a fascination with b-movies, pre-code horror comics, and Famous Monsters of Filmland with aggressive but incessantly catchy punk rock into an iconic blend that influenced everyone from Metallica to Rob Zombie to Black Veil Brides. Here, we'll take a look at 10 movies that inspired the Misfits.

When the band formed in Lodi, New Jersey in the famous punk year of 1977, the moniker they chose was the name of a 1961 movie starring Marilyn Monroe, the screen princess who also inspired the first solo single from singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig, "Who Killed Marilyn?" The Misfits disintegrated in 1983, with Glenn moving on to the similarly legendary Samhain and Danzig. Original bassist Jerry Only revived the Misfits in 1995, with an abundance...

Will We See a Reunion of the Original Misfits Lineup This Year?
The Misfits have been a revered name in horror rock since the late '70s, after which they tore up the punk scene with classics like the 1982 album Walk Among Us. The band's lineup has changed many times over the decades, and today bassist Jerry Only is the remaining original member. But according to Jerry's brother, current guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, the founding personnel – including frontman Glenn Danzig – just might be teaming up again for a historic reunion. In a two-part interview this week with Alternative Press (conducted by Black Veil Brides frontman Andy Biersack), Doyle said he had previously discussed the possibility of a reunion with Danzig and Only in 2002, but a news leak caused them to cancel the event. Now, he says he's the only one capable of getting the team together again. “I’ve just decided this week that I am going to make an attempt,...

Filmmaker Jason Baker Talks Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini
Anyone who reads this site with any regularity knows the name "Tom Savini" and knows it well. His Special Makeup FX work on films such as Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Creepshow, and Friday the 13th are legendary. His acting roles in From Dusk Till Dawn, Planet Terror, and Land of the Dead equally so. However, as well as audiences think they know his work, the man behind the FX magic is a mystery… not unlike the great and powerful Oz.

In production now is a documentary called Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini which aims to change all of that by lifting the veil and showing who exactly Tom Savini really is. Recently, filmmaker Jason Baker unveiled a trailer for his film online and the response has been incredible to say the least. The donations to the film's Kickstarter page have yielded unprecedented results.

The Misfits return with Land Of The Dead
The Misfits are getting ready to release their first studio recordings since 2003's Misfits Project 1950, and their first original material in over a decade.

The horror rock icons will release 2-new tracks, "Land of the Dead" and "Twilight of the Dead" digitally beginning October 27th (just in time for Halloween!), before offering them on vinyl in several limited-edition configurations.

The following message was released via the band's official site this weekend:

The Ltd. Ed. 12-inch LP maxi single showcases an incredible new cover painting rendered by Arthur Suydam (of Marvel Zombies fame) who has ferociously rendered the Misfits world famous “Fiend Skull” icon in homage to the zombie films of George A. Romero. The artwork is appropriately suited as both new songs, were inspired by the acclaimed director’s living dead series.

The first pressing on clear red vinyl is a limited edition of 1,000 pcs guaranteed to feed the collectible...

Exclusive: Misfits Halloween show at B.B. King’s (Video Included)
Halloween 2008 was an exceptionally nice night in NYC. I’ve been out on some Halloweens past where the weather was bleak, the prevailing mood on the street was anything but festive, and the costumes were no more than a poor excuse to dress slutty or to hide the identity of a person whose only intention was to hopefully not get arrested.

On this night, however, the air was pretty fresh for Times Square—which is to say not all that clean but tolerable—the mood was rather light-spirited and playful and people genuinely looked like they were out to have a fun time and not kill each other in the spirit of the holiday.

Halloween presents a very interesting conundrum to a lot of people. What do you do on this one night of endless things to do? It was simpler when you were a child, of course, as your parents dictated what to do,...
