The Legacy of SpongeBob SquarePants: Nickelodeon’s Biggest Hit | A Tribute
Image
Video Version of this Article Photo: SpongeBob SquarePants Brief Note To prematurely address the elephant in the room, I will not be talking about the controversy regarding the spin-offs that were announced shortly after Stephen Hillenburg’s death, as that’s not relevant to the point of this article. Instead, I’ll be focusing on his creation and the massive impact it had on both children’s television and pop culture in general. Are Ya’ Ready, Kids? Aye, Aye, Captain! SpongeBob SquarePants was created by marine biologist/animator Stephen Hillenburg. Hillenburg was the author and illustrator of an unpublished educational comic called The Intertidal Zone, which he used while teaching at the Orange County Marine Institute. While working as a creative director on the early Nickelodeon series ‘Rocko’s Modern Life’, show writer Martin Olson read ‘The Intertidal Zone’ and was impressed by what he saw. He suggested that Stephen Hillenburg...

Extreme Ghostbusters: revisiting an underappreciated cartoon
Stephen Harber Jul 18, 2016

We look back at an often-overlooked part of the Ghostbusters legacy: it's Extreme Ghostbusters...

There was a time when no one cared about Ghostbusters. It was the late 90s - the pre-Pokemon, post-Mighty Morphin Power Rangers days to be exact. Nobody’s kid was exactly clamouring for a sequel, reboot, or a Ghostbusters continuation of any kind - except for Dan Aykroyd, who was practically lobbying for a third instalment while sitting front row at the Ghostbusters II premiere. Which is why we have this: an awkwardly timed, tonally disruptive Ghostbusters animated series.

Enter a brand new cartoon that picked up the sticky, ectoplasm-covered mantle of The Real Ghostbusters and wore it slightly askew to evoke that wholesome sense of 1990s irreverence: Extreme Ghostbusters.

Living up to its name, Xgb was extreme indeed. One glance at its radically inclusive team line-up is all you need to notice that.

‘The Adventure Time Encyclopaedia’ Review
Or to give the book it’s Full title: The Adventure Time Encyclopaedia, Compiled by His Lowness, Hunson Abadeer, Lord of Evil (Translated from the Scrolls of Ooo by Martin Olson)…

If you don’t like Adventure Time, I’d say the chances are you haven’t watched it. I’m right, aren’t I? Do yourself a favour and go watch some. Right now. This review will still be here when you get back. Go on. Off you trot.

Are we all on the same Adventure Time-loving page now? Great, I can continue. As you’ll now know, Adventure Time is a delightful animated programme about a human boy and his best friend, a shape-shifting dog and their escapades in the weird land of Ooo. It’s clever, hip, very, very funny and has a streak of pure disturbing running through its dark heart so strongly, you wonder...

“Bring me…the Bookworms!:” Del Toro’s notebooks, cult movie art and the Land of Ooo
Books are often the source for some of the greatest film and television adaptations, but flip the scenario and it can be said that movies and TV can also be among the greatest sources for books. Behind the scenes nonfiction offers a peak behind the curtain of the dream factory. Art books often enhance a reader’s perspective of film and television. Companion books do both, expanding a reader’s attachment and understanding of the source material while giving a glimpse into the detailed world building of its creators. This past month, three books, Guillermo Del Toro: Cabinet of Curiosities, Crazy 4 Cult: Cult Movie Art 2 and The Adventure Time Encyclopedia have each improved on the visual experience of the films and shows they celebrate.

Guillermo Del Toro: Cabinet of Curiosities

Guillermo Del Toro is one of the most imaginative filmmakers working today. He is influenced by everything from Lovecraft,...
