AMC Networks Continues to Suffer From Cable Cord Cutters, Sees 7% Dip in Revenue
Image
AMC Networks is still struggling as cable TV continues to shrink. During the company’s earnings report for the first quarter of 2025, which was reported on Friday, AMC Networks saw decreases across subscription revenues, content licensing and advertising, all of which was credited to contraction in the linear TV business.

Overall, domestic operations decreased 7% from 2024, coming in at $486 million. That includes content licensing, which decreased 13% to $54 million, and advertising revenues, which decreased 15% to $119 million primarily due to linear ratings declines. The drop in content licensing had to do with what programs were available to be licensed during the period. The first quarter of 2024 saw a boost due to the sale of AMC’s rights to “Killing Eve.” During the earnings call for the quarter, executives for the company noted that a bigger content licensing deal that was originally planned for this quarter is expected to appear in the company’s second quarter.

With Big ‘Silo’ Renewal By Apple TV+ And Return Of The “Netflix Effect”, AMC Networks Staying In Third-Party Licensing Game
Image
Last December’s two-season renewal of Apple TV+ series Silo was a boon to AMC Networks, whose studio arm produces the show. But even though there’s no major follow-up project in the pipeline, top execs plan to remain in the third-party business.

“Currently we’re producing pretty much exclusively for our AMC-owned platforms,” Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios, said Friday on a quarterly conference call with Wall Street analysts. Nevertheless, he continued, “We do have a studio, we are able to produce for third parties when it’s beneficial to us and makes financial sense. We do have a lot of interest in our studio content, so we’re going to be strategic and opportunistic as we go forward.”

In 2023, AMC Networks collected $56 million in licensing fees for Silo, according to SEC filings. Even when that gain and a $20 million gain from returned licenses from Hulu are factored out,...

AMC Networks Sees Revenue Drop, but Streaming Subscribers Rise to 12.4M
Image
AMC Networks reported fourth quarter revenue of $599 million, down 12 percent from the same period a year ago, and adjusted earnings per share of 64 cents down from 72 cents.

Both numbers missed Wall Street earnings expectations.

In its domestic operations unit, AMC Networks said subscription revenue fell 4 percent to $314 million in the fourth-quarter as the company cited declines in linear subscribers, partially offset by streaming revenue growth. Streaming revenues increased 8 percent to $156 million due to year-over-year subscriber growth and price increases.

The company’s total streaming subscribers reached 12.4 million at the end of 2024, including subscribers to AMC+, Acorn TV, Shudder, Sundance Now, Allblk and Hidive, up from 11.4 million subscribers a year ago.

AMC Networks took a $268.7 million goodwill impairment charge on its domestic operations reporting unit, due to “continued softness in the domestic linear marketplace and across the International television broadcasting markets, resulting in lower expected future cash flows, as well as...

Angelina Jolie's 10 Best '90s Movies Ranked
Image
Angelina Jolie remains one of the biggest movie stars of her era, despite appearing less and less frequently on screen over the years, and it was in the '90s that she made it known not just how big of an icon she was, but how talented an actress as well. The daughter of Academy Award winner Jon Voight and the late actress, Marcheline Bertrand, Angelina Jolie was always destined for something big in Hollywood. After an early role in Lookin' to Get Out alongside her father, Jolie began her career in earnest in the early '90s.

Her first major role came in the 1993 low-budget sci-fi film Cyborg 2, but she continued gaining roles even after that flop. Every year, Jolie seemed to get a touch more skillful and competent until she was nominated at some of the biggest awards ceremonies toward the end of the decade. The '90s...

AMC Networks acquires full control of BBC America for $49 million
Image

AMC Networks has bought out its partner for the cable channel BBC America, the company announced on Friday.

The entertainment giant spent $49 million in cash to acquire full control of the channel from BBC Studios, which held a 50.1 percent stake in the network.

The channel was originally launched in 1998 by the commercial arm of the BBC, then known as BBC Worldwide, which allowed the British public service broadcaster to present its comedies and dramas to a stateside audience while allowing it to tap into various advertising opportunities.

BBC America was originally distributed by Discovery Communications, but the partnership ended in 2014 when AMC Networks acquired a minority stake in the channel. It continued to operate under a licensing agreement with BBC Studios, during which it replaced a considerable amount of British programming with re-runs of “Star Trek,” “Law & Order,...

AMC Networks Fully Acquires BBC America for $42 Million
Image
BBC America now fully and officially belongs to AMC Networks. The company revealed that it acquired the remaining 50.1% of the channel from BBC Studios in a deal that took place last Friday.

The remaining half of the company was paid for in $42 million cash, which was distributed from the savings balance sheet. “We now own 100% of the iconic channel with full operational control, and look forward to what the future holds,” Patrick O’Connell, executive vice president and Chief Financial Officer of AMC Networks, said during the company’s third quarter earnings call for 2024.

O’Connell assured analysts that moving forward AMC will continue to have a “close commercial relationship with BBC Studios” when it comes to the channel, ensuring that the brand and its programming remain at the same caliber. The company will continue to fully consolidate BBC America, as it did prior to this transaction.

The company also noted that,...

AMC Networks Acquires Full Control of BBC America for $42 Million
Image
AMC Networks has acquired full control of BBC America, its joint venture with BBC Studios.

The U.S. media company has owned a 49.9% stake in the channel since 2014, which it purchased for $200 million in a deal with BBC Worldwide. With this new transaction, which closed Nov. 1, AMC Networks gains the remaining 50.1% of BBC America in exchange for $42 million in cash.

Per AMC Networks’ Q3 earnings results, which were released Friday, AMC Networks “now owns 100% of the BBC America business, with full operational control, and will continue to fully consolidate BBC America.”

Along with “Mad Men,” “The Walking Dead” and “Breaking Bad,” some of the shows AMC Networks is best known for are past BBC America hits and critical darlings, including “Killing Eve,” “Orphan Black” and “Doctor Who” (which now airs on Disney+).

AMC Networks says “future contractual programming commitments to BBC Studios would have been significantly reduced,” had the deal been closed by Sept.

What Happened to Michael in Princess Diaries 2?
Image
The Princess Diaries is a classic Disney film that put Anne Hathaway on the map in 2001. A coming-of-age comedy about Mia Thermopolis, an average girl who learns she's long-lost European royalty, the film and its 2004 sequel were based on a series of novels by Meg Cabot. Unfortunately, however, one big change was made to Mia's love life.

In the original film, Mia crushes on Michael Moscovitz but his character is nowhere to be seen in the sequel, The Princess Bride 2: Royal Engagement, despite being fairly prominent in the source material. The reason for Michael's absence had an entirely real-world explanation, and it led to Mia instead romancing Nicholas Deveraux, played by Chris Pine.

Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on August 31, 2024: The Princess Diaries franchise reminds a beloved staple of early 2000s comedies, with many members of its main cast going on to become major stars in the decades that followed.

New AMC Networks CEO Kristin Dolan’s 2023 Pay Reaches $14.5 Million
Image
AMC Networks CEO Kristin Dolan’s compensation was $14.5 million in 2023, her first year in the top post at the cable channel giant.

According to an SEC filing posted Friday, Dolan’s base salary for the year was $1.7 million. She had $8.8 million in stock awards, $4 million in non-equity incentive plan compensation and $71,000 in “other” pay.

Dolan, the wife of company owner James Dolan, started as CEO of AMC Networks on Feb. 27, 2023, and shortly after stepped down as a member of the company’s board on March 10. Previously, Dolan had served as founder and CEO of TV analytics firm 605.

Her appointment to the CEO position came after Christina Spade, formerly CFO of AMC Networks, stepped down in November 2022 after a very brief stint as CEO, following the exit of interim CEO Matt Blank.

Once Spade left, James Dolan was named interim executive chairman while a search began for another AMC Networks CEO,...

How AMC Networks Thinks About Licensing and Developing Content for Other Buyers
Image
The television industry is at the beginning of an era that can be termed “the great rebundling,” said AMC Networks CFO Patrick O’Connell.

Speaking at a J.P. Morgan conference on Tuesday, O’Connell pointed to the Disney-Charter deal as a model for streaming services moving forward. He argued with more bundling, and more ad-supported linear networks being added to the paid TV ecosystem, these packages will be a better value for customers, rather than subscribing to several streaming services, which have been raising prices and cutting down content spend.

“It’s going to take some time for that to fully play out over the course of 18 to 24 months of affiliate cycle renewals, but we think the tide is turning,” O’Connell said. “And in the interim, what we’re doing at AMC is ensuring that we’re de-risking our financial profile, in light of the fact that the business model was shifting in this way.

AMC Networks U.S. Ad Revenue Drops 23 Percent, Streaming Subs Rise to 11.4M
Image
AMC Networks — the company behind such cable channel brands as AMC, IFC and Sundance TV, as well as such streaming services as AMC+, Acorn TV and Shudder — reported a 23 percent drop in fourth-quarter U.S. advertising revenue Friday, following an 18 percent decline in the third quarter, a second-quarter drop of 17 percent and a first-quarter decrease of 20 percent.

After returning to streaming subscriber growth in the third quarter after two quarters of declines, the company added 300,000 subs in the fourth quarter to end 2023 with a total of 11.4 million.

The latest quarterly U.S. ad revenue update came for the final quarter of 2023, in which AMC Networks aired such original series as The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. Ad revenue dropped to $158 million for the period due to linear ratings declines and a challenging ad market, the company said.

On the advertising front, AMC Networks is leaning into data-led audience targeting for ad...

AMC Networks CFO Talks Strike Ending, Landmark Charter-Disney Deal

AMC Networks Falls Short of Q3 Revenue Expectations With $637 Million Due to Lower Ad and Affiliate Revenue
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
AMC Networks missed Wall Street expectations for revenue during its third quarter of fiscal year 2023, citing lower domestic advertising revenues and affiliate revenue as a reason for the 7% drop year over year. That fall was partly offset by streaming revenue growth.

During its third quarter, AMC reported net income of $67.9 million, which included non-controlling interests, or diluted earnings of $1.44 per share. Revenue fell 7% year over year to $636.95 million, the company announced Friday.

Adjusted earnings per share were reported as $1.85, an 11% drop year over year. Diluted earnings per share saw a 26% drop year over year.

According to analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research, the network behind “The Walking Dead” was expected to report earnings of $1.31 per share and revenue of $654.08 million.

Given the difficult advertising environment and the softness the company is seeing when it comes to content licensing revenues, AMC Networks dropped its year end 2023 revenue expectations from $2.8 billion to $2.7 billion.

AMC Networks U.S. Ad Revenue Drops 18 Percent, Streaming Subs Hit 11.1M in Return to Growth
Image
AMC Networks — the company behind such cable channel brands as AMC, IFC and Sundance TV, as well as such streaming services as AMC+, Acorn TV and Shudder — reported an 18 percent drop in third-quarter U.S. advertising revenue Friday, but returned to streaming subscriber growth after two quarters of declines.

On the company’s earnings conference call, management lowered its full-year 2023 revenue target from $2.8 billion to $2.7 billion. CFO Patrick O’Connell said this “reflects softness we are seeing in content licensing revenues, as well as the continuation of a difficult advertising environment.” But he highlighted that AMC Networks was sticking to its full-year bottom-line forecast. “Despite these headwinds, we are reiterating our 2023 adjusted operating income outlook and expect to be in the range of $650 million-$675 million, reflecting continued and better than previously anticipated cost discipline,” he explained.

AMC Networks — the company behind such cable channel brands as AMC, IFC and Sundance TV, as well as such streaming services as AMC+, Acorn TV and Shudder — reported a 17 percent drop in second-quarter U.S. advertising revenue Friday.

Advertising revenue fell to $167 million “due to anticipated linear ratings declines, softness in the ad market and fewer original programming episodes within the quarter, partly offset by digital and advanced advertising revenue growth,” it said. The second quarter included new episodes of such original series as Fear the Walking Dead and Lucky Hank. The latest quarterly U.S. ad revenue update followed a first-quarter decrease of 20 percent and a fourth-quarter drop of 12 percent.

Billie Eilish Breaks Down ‘F—ed Up’ ‘Swarm’ Character, Resonating With Storyline: Passionate Fans Are ‘Beautiful’ Yet ‘Really Scary’

AMC Networks Exploring Consolidation of AMC+, Shudder, Acorn TV, Allblk, Other Streaming Services

In a moment where even the biggest players in the world of entertainment are moving to consolidate their streaming properties, it is almost inevitable that the smaller companies would eventually look to do the same. On Wednesday, while speaking at the Gabelli Funds 15th Annual Media and Entertainment Symposium, AMC Networks’ executive vice president and chief financial officer Patrick O’Connell said that his company was looking into the possibility of some sort of “self-bundle” to bring together its myriad streaming services, something that has seemed to make sense for quite a while for the embattled company.

AMC Networks Mulls ‘Self-Bundle’ of Streaming Services: ‘It Probably Does Make Sense Over Time’
Patrick O'Connell in Les dessous de Palm Beach (1991)
There could be a future in which AMC Networks bundles all of its brands into one streaming service. Executive vice president and chief financial officer Patrick O’Connell talked about the possibility on Wednesday during the Gabelli Funds 15th Annual Media and Entertainment Symposium.

Over the past several months, more and more companies have consolidated their streaming platforms. HBO Max and Discovery+ merged to form Max; Showtime and Paramount+ are combining later this month thanks to Paramount+ with Showtime; and Disney has announced it wants to combine Hulu and Disney+ into a single all-in-one platform. O’Connell noted that this combination strategy doesn’t currently make sense for AMC Networks, but it could in the future.

AMC EVP Says Network ‘Overspent’ on Programming and Marketing, Will Shrink Back Down to $1.1 Billion This Year
Patrick O'Connell in Les dessous de Palm Beach (1991)
AMC Networks is scaling back on its programming and marketing spends starting this year, according to executive vice president and chief financial officer Patrick O’Connell. The exec took the stage Wednesday at the Gabelli Funds 15th Annual Media and Entertainment Symposium to address what the financial future of the company entails.

“So I think over the last couple of years — AMC, to a lesser degree, but the industry broadly — overspent on programming, overspent on marketing as well,” O’Connell said.

According to O’Connell, before the Covid-19 pandemic, AMC Network’s cash content spend averaged between $950 million and $1 billion. That increased to “about $1.35 billion” last year.

“We’ve made a commitment to take that back down to pre-pandemic levels. It’ll be closer to $1.1 billion this year, and we’ll likely float down even further closer to the $1 billion dollar range going forward,” O’Connell said. “We think that’s the...

AMC Networks CFO Outlines Three Steps to “Economic Repair” in the Streaming Age
Image
AMC Networks CFO Patrick O’Connell elaborated on how media and entertainment is pivoting to streaming sustainability, telling an investor conference on Thursday that “there needs to be economic repair to the media business.”

Speaking at Td Cowen’s 51st Annual Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in New York in a session that was webcast, he said that chairman Jim Dolan’s comments late last year that current content monetization mechanisms weren’t working meant that, “Jim said out loud what everyone else was sort of whispering to each other.”

The CFO of AMC Networks, which operates such cable channel brands as AMC, IFC and Sundance TV, as well as such streamers as AMC+, Acorn TV, and Shudder, told the Thursday conference in a session that was webcast change was needed.

“Because right now, we’ve got the problem where we had one of the best business models of all time with cable networks,...

AMC Networks’ New CEO Vows Broad Content Distribution Amid Streaming Subscriber Loss
Image
AMC Networks’ new CEO Kristin Dolan on Tuesday outlined her priorities during her first earnings conference call appearance for the company, which operates such cable channel brands as AMC, IFC and Sundance TV, as well as such streamers as AMC+, Acorn TV and Shudder. Optimizing financials and brand impact by making AMC hit content available as widely as possible — including through licensing to other companies, while also looking for opportunities for further streaming subscriber growth — are among her goals, she said.

In Tuesday’s earnings report, she had emphasized: “In an environment of shifting consumption, we are committed to making our content available across the entire distribution ecosystem. While we reevaluate the pathways to content monetization, we are strategically reducing costs and streamlining our organization.”

She added: “These efforts contributed to a first quarter with strong margins and increased streaming revenue as we prioritized higher-value subscribers for our streaming portfolio.

Alexandra Daddario in Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches (2023)
AMC Networks Posts 29% Jump in Q1 Streaming Revenue Even As Subscribers Slip
Alexandra Daddario in Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches (2023)
AMC Networks saw its streaming revenue jump 29% year over year to $141 million in the first three months of the year despite slipping subscriber numbers.

The parent of IFC and Sundance TV said it grew streaming subscribers about 22% year over year to 11.5 million from 9.5 million in the first quarter of 2022. While a big jump from last year, that represented a decline from 11.8 million subscribers in the fourth quarter, even amid the premiere of the hit “Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches,” which has already been renewed.

“While this represents a slight decline from last quarter, the bigger context is our focus on attracting and retaining higher value subscribers,” CEO Kristin Dolan said on the conference call to discuss the results. She said “Mayfair Witches” was the most-watched season of any show on its services and channels.

AMC Networks reported revenue of $717.4 million for the first quarter of 2023, up less than 1% from $712.2 million in the year-ago first quarter.

Image
The board of directors at AMC Networks have unveiled the 2022 compensation packages paid out to its leadership team after surprise executive suite turmoil at the company that operates such cable networks as AMC, IFC and Sundance TV.

Former CEO, COO and CFO Christina Spade received a total pay package of $21.3 million last year, AMC Networks revealed in an SEC filing issued on Friday. Spade was promoted to CEO from Sept. 9, 2022, only to abruptly step down from the job on Nov. 28, 2022.

Spade, whose pay topped $7 million in 2021, last year received a salary of $1.24 million and no bonus, while also taking home $7.4 million in stock awards, $2.1 million in non-equity incentive plan compensation and $10.5 million in “all other” compensation.

Spade’s latest employment agreement was set to run through the end of 2025 and stipulated she was eligible to receive a severance payment of more than $10 million, in addition to benefits associated with restricted stock and other awards.

AMC Networks Hits 11.8M Streaming Subscribers in Fourth Quarter
Image
AMC Networks, the cable TV company behind such brands as AMC, IFC and Sundance TV, as well as such online video services as AMC+, Acorn TV and Shudder, hit 11.8 million streaming subscribers in the fourth quarter.

That’s up sequentially from 11.1 million paid subscribers at the end of the third quarter of fiscal 2022 as streaming revenues rose 35 percent to 502 million. Overall revenue jumped 20 percent to 965 million, compared to a year-earlier 803.71 million. That beat an overall revenues expectation of 947.78 million, according to a Refinitiv consensus.

The adjusted per-share earnings came to 2.52 against a year-earlier 54 cents a share, which blew past a Refinitiv estimate of 1.20 per share. But an operating loss of 391.6 million, compared to a year-earlier profit of 63.6 million, included 449 million in restructuring costs and related charges, mostly related to domestic operations and non-cash programming write-offs.

That followed layoffs across the company. Severance and other personnel costs came to 45.2 million. Amid an advertising slump,...

Image
In a February 9 court hearing, “Ocean Eyes” singer Billie Eilish was granted a five-year restraining order against 39-year-old Christopher Anderson, an alleged fan and intruder who had broken into her childhood house in Los Angeles. Her parents, who still live there, and brother Finneas O’Connell will also receive protection.

Eilish filed for temporary protection last month, detailing that she and her family had called the police on Anderson five times after he showed up repeatedly at the home since late December 2022.

According to her father Patrick O’Connell, Anderson had also professed his love for the 21-year-old singer and stated that that he really wanted to meet her.

The order means that the accused will not be allowed 91 meters of her and is also prohibited from reaching out to her on social media.

“Each such occasion, including the present one, causes me substantial anxiety, fear, and emotional distress over my personal...

The musician appeared virtually in court on Thursday for a hearing, with the judge granting court-ordered protection for her and her parents Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell, as well as her brother Finneas O’Connell.

Billie Eilish Speaks Out About Oscar-Contending Film Documenting Her Rise To Fame: “It Was Not Acting… It Was Real Life Footage”
Image
There’s an emotional realness to singer-songwriter Billie Eilish, a disinclination to disguise experience behind euphemism or pretense.

It manifests in her music and in Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, the Oscar-contending documentary that follows her on her journey to global stardom. In the film directed by R.J. Cutler Eilish doesn’t censor dark moments from her past, occasional frustrations attendant to fame, and a major romantic disappointment—young love ultimately unrequited.

When it came time to discuss the documentary publicly for the first time, Eilish brought the realness again, admitting to an audience in Hollywood that she felt anxious as the film was about to be released on Apple TV+.

“I was excited and scared and nervous, and worried and hopeful,” she told attendees at a post-screening Q&a. “It was not acting, I wasn’t playing a character. It was real life footage of my life…...

It’s a location familiar to any Eilish fan, and at first glance on an absurdly beautiful day in April, not much appears to have changed...
