John Carpenter's thematically connected Apocalypse Trilogy — which comprises "The Thing," "Prince of Darkness," and "In the Mouth of Madness" — is the ultimate test of faith. All three movies offer bleak landscapes steeped in nihilism, telling isolated stories that prove that humanity never had any hope to begin with. Some stories are lessons in paranoia-fueled xenophobia, while "In the Mouth of Madness" specifically tunes into a more esoteric interpretation of the end of the world. Carpenter weaves a suffocating net of terror with this uncanny triptych, underlining his strongest impulses as a horror director who comprehends the language of fear. So much so that his beloved, mainstream horror entry "Halloween" feels almost cozier in comparison to the thematic ushering of an apocalypse that leaves mankind utterly helpless and alone.
Then there are his post-apocalyptic forays, such as "Escape from New York" and "Escape from L.A.," which take a dramatic, action-packed...

Adult animation isn’t something that gets talked about enough. Paving the way for today’s movie were things like Fritz the Cat, Lord of the Rings which is not expressly adult of course, and Wizards. Let us know if we should talk about Wizards in some form by the way. Other movies that firmly tie into a similar vein of Heavy Metal are American Pop from the same year and Fire and Ice from a couple years later. While a bunch of the animated movies listed or even not listed fall under the sex comedy, fantasy, or recreation of modern life, Heavy Metal is something else entirely. It’s an anthology sci-fi, horror, comedy, action, fantasy that has a rocking soundtrack and earns its hard R rating. It was held back from being on video for a while due to licensing issues but has become an endearing cult classic 44 years later.

20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios) had just become home to the hottest sci-fi franchise in Hollywood in the late 1970s with "Star Wars" when it unexpectedly found itself the proud parent of a second, scarier, much more adult series in "Alien." The brainchild of legendary genre screenwriter Dan O'Bannon (and directed to stylish perfection by Ridley Scott), "Alien" jolted audiences with its chest-burster scare and kept them utterly terrified until Sigourney Weaver's Ripley expelled the big, acid-blooded Xenomorph into deep space.
When "Alien" became a box office smash, Fox knew there was more money to be mined from these sleek black buggers. Indeed, that was at the heart of James Cameron's famous pitch for "Aliens," where, legend has it, he scribbled the word "Alien" down on a cocktail napkin before adding a dollar sign as the "s." While Cameron delivered the goods and then some with his sequel,...

1985 gave us one of the most important zombie movies of all time. It was a sequel to the movie that gave us zombies as we know them and probably signaled the end of the world on screen. Day of the Dead you say? As much as I love that slow-paced close-out to George Romero’s original trilogy, I’m talking about something a little different. I’m talking about running zombies that can’t be killed, rabid weasels, Burt and Ernie, partying when it’s party time, and a true return of the living dead. Dan O’Bannon horror comedy expertly walks the line between the two genres with genuine laughs and frightening thrills. It could have been a very different experience for audiences who now know it as a perfect summer horror film and celebrate July 3rd every year. It could have been more like the very obscure book it...

We recently learned that Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez is working on the script for a direct sequel to the block-busting sci-fi horror movie, and it sounds like the follow-up might just lay the groundwork for a new Alien vs. Predator film.
Álvarez confirmed that he's currently developing the story during a recent interview with Empire, while promising that the movie will take the classic franchise "into uncharted waters."
“Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are working on that right now. We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.”

To mark Alien Day, we head back to the late 1970s to see how Hr Giger designed the Space Jockey – and its strange fate after the film’s premiere…
In the early hours of Tuesday, the 29th May 1979, someone killed the Space Jockey. Burned it alive, perhaps with a blowtorch or something more mundane like a match or a cigarette. The crime occurred four days after the premiere of Alien at Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, and was reported on by at least one outlet at the time: sci-fi magazine, Starlog.
“The Los Angeles opening of Alien was marked by misfortune when a miniature version of the film’s ‘starpilot’ was destroyed with fire,” the news story ran, garbling the Space Jockey’s name somewhat. “It was set ablaze by vandals just hours after being placed on display in the forecourt of Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre. We’ve recently looked at the of Michael Crichton’s best works and it got me thinking about some of the other heavy hitting sci-fi writers. One of the best who also happens to have quite a few adaptations to his name is Philip K. Dick. If you aren’t a big reader, then the titles We Can Remember It For You Wholesale and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep may not ring a bell, but I’m sure that Total Recall and Blade Runner are right up this audience’s alley. You guys seemed to really enjoy the breakdowns on Jurassic Park, Congo, and Sphere so lets take a look at one of the biggest action movies of 1990 and its source material and unpack Total Recall. No, not the remake. Never the remake for that one. Pull that tracker out of your nostril as we find out what happened to this adaptation.

The attitude to spoilers appeared to be rather different in 1979, if magazine coverage of Moonraker, Alien and more are anything to go by…
Nb: The following contains spoilers for Moonraker and Alien. The irony is not lost on us.
It’s amazing what you can find just by browsing through old magazines: they’re a time capsule of information, cultural tastes and changing attitudes. And if a 1979 issue of Cinefantastique is anything to go by, they also give an idea of how entertainment writers used to handle the concept of plot spoilers.
A quarterly publication that specialised in sci-fi, fantasy and horror, Cinefantastique found itself in the middle of a vintage period for genre film at the end of the 1970s. The seismic impact of 1977’s Star Wars saw film studios clamour to release space-related films of their own, including 20th Century Fox’s Alien and Eon’s rushed-into-production James Bond sequel,...

The first C.H.U.D became a culturally relevant movie for multiple reasons and against all odds also worked its way into the greater pop culture zeitgeist. I argued that the first movie doesn’t quite stand the test of time a bit ago and while I stand by that, it doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy it either. C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D. is a wild ride of a sequel that certainly didn’t need to exist but is somehow more fun than the predecessor. When it comes to horror sequels, Alien: Romulus now stands among the best ones in modern cinema. Directed by 2013's Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe auteur Fede Álvarez, Romulus provided audiences with a unique approach to the Alien universe. However, as Álvarez has revealed, the original plans included an amazing strategy that would have blown everyone's minds: In the director's original vision, you would have found out that it was an Alien movie roughly a third of the way through.
The director spoke to Collider after a special IMAX screening of the movie. During the Q&a, Álvarez made some shocking reveals, including about the upcoming sequel and when he wants to start production, to the confirmation that Ellen Ripley is actually in Romulus. The director also teased the idea of making an Alien vs. Predator movie, and it was there that he revealed his original plan for Alien: Romulus.

One of Alien: Romulus' shocking reveals happened behind the scenes, when it was confirmed the Offspring sequence was filmed with a real actor wearing prosthetics. However, that creature's introduction was replaced with CGI after the film first screened with a test audience.
Alien: Romulus was a return to form for the franchise with its reliance on practical effects, and it showed in the visceral scenes of Xenomorphs and facehuggers. The Offspring blindsided fans in the final act, however; many suspected Kay (played by Isabela Merced) would birth an abomination but no one expected That. The creature has been compared to the Newborn from Alien: Resurrection, which used animatronics to flesh out the hybrid. A VFX head told Screen Rant that the Offspring was filmed using a real actor wearing prosthetics, save for two sequences.

When we last left the Return of the Living Dead franchise, Part 2 had just flopped badly, satisfying neither critics nor fans of the first one. Making only $9 million worldwide after a $6 million budget, what was once thought to be a burgeoning series of movies in the mold of Friday the 13th looked deader than a week-old corpse. But as we all know, you can’t keep a good zombie down, and after the man who held the rights to the Living Dead name, Tom Fox, decided he didn’t want to be in the ghoul business any longer, he sold the rights, which eventually ended up at Trimark Pictures, a small studio specializing in horror pictures like Warlock, Leprechaun and Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive. Trimark saw there was potential still pumping in the Living Dead’s veins and decided to make a third entry, although this one would be...

Alien: Romulus was one of the outstanding horror movies of 2024. It is also one of the best movies of the Alien universe, a franchise filled with films that aren't always well received by audiences and critics. In the movie, Cailee Spaeny plays Rain Carradine, a miner on a dark star who's offered the opportunity to escape to another planet that's not under the control of the Weyland-Yutani corporation. Rain and her brother Andy only have to join a group of other miners, and find the pods that will allow them to arrive at Yvaga III.

Actor Michael Biehn has a podcast called Just Foolin About with Michael Biehn, which can be found on YouTube. Biehn’s latest guest was Veronica Cartwright, who ran into the alien xenomorph in the 1979 film Alien, seven years before Biehn had his own close encounter with the nasty creatures in Aliens. The full, 95 minute episode can be viewed at This Link – but to promote the episode, Biehn has dropped a 13 minute clip that shows Cartwright talking about the experience of working on Alien, including her reaction to the famous chestburster scene. You can check it out in the embed above.
Here’s the clip’s official description: Veronica Cartwright tells Michael Biehn about her time working on and filming Alien. She goes on to shed some light on whether or not the cast was truly unaware of what was about to happen in the iconic chestburster scene, and how genuine her reaction was.

The recent rumor that the next Alien movie might be set to bring back Sigourney Weaver to play a de-aged Ellen Ripley was met with a mixture of excitement and trepidation from fans of the classic sci-fi horror franchise, but it seems we won't be seeing the iconic heroine in action again after all - at least, not in the Romulus sequel.
Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez responded on social media, stating that the report was "fun gossip. But not true at all."

Forty years ago, writer/director Dan O’Bannon delivered one of the most highly entertaining zombie movies of all time with The Return of the Living Dead (watch it Here). A company called Living Dead Media LLC claims to own the copyright to the original screenplay and the underlying script for that film, as well as other trademarks, which is how they’re able to move ahead with a new Return of the Living Dead film that’s aiming for a Christmas 2025 release. But last year, a new company called Rotld Originals LLC was formed, with Return of the Living Dead cast member Beverly Randolph, a.k.a. Beverly Dawn Hartley, signing the formation document. It has since been revealed that Rotld Originals LLC is teaming up with DRagonSTUDIOS, a company that owns the trademarks to The Return of the Living Dead and Rotld Universe, for a movie project called Trash’s Revenge,...

2024 was a great year for science fiction movies, with several exciting additions. Although there were some original stories, most of the new releases were follow-ups to pre-existing IPs which did very well at the box office. One of them was Alien: Romulus.
The film marks the seventh addition to the Alien franchise and was set between the events of 1979's Alien and 1986's Aliens. Fede Álvarez directed the film, which starred Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Following its worldwide release on Disney+ on Jan. 15, Alien: Romulus topped the charts on the streaming service on the global charts, FlixPatrol reports.

Alien: Romulus Director Fede Álvarez Says Planned Sequel Will Take Franchise Into "Uncharted Waters"
Alien: Romulus was a significant success at the box office while also proving to be a big hit with critics, so it wasn't exactly a huge surprise when 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell confirmed that early plans are in pace for a sequel last year.
Though director Fede Álvarez still hasn't officially signed on to return, it sounds like it's close to being a done deal. During a new interview with Empire, the filmmaker confirmed that he is in the process of working on the sequel's script, and promises that the movie will take the classic sci-fi horror franchise "into uncharted waters."
“Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are working on that right now. We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while.

August of 1985 saw the release of one of the great zombie movies of all time. And we’re not talking about George Romero’s Day of the Dead, though some will argue that particular sequel deserves to be in the conversation. We’re talking about Dan O’Bannon’s punk-rock horror-comedy The Return of the Living Dead, which introduced the world to speedy, brain-craving zombies – who also have a thing or two to say when they’re feeling chatty. The movie was by no means a blockbuster, but it did very respectable business, making around $30 million worldwide off of a budget in the low single digits. Naturally, a follow-up would be necessary in the eyes of that film’s producer Tom Fox, who assumed the Living Dead title was due for the franchise treatment in the vein of Friday the 13th. It would take three years, but we did eventually get...

Though Alien: Romulus received a mostly positive response from critics and fans, one aspect of the movie that was met with almost universal backlash was the likeness of a deceased actor being used for a new character via VFX.
When Rain Carradine and her crew arrive on the derelict space station, they learn that the ship's android is still functional despite clearly being in very bad shape after a Xenomorph attack. They plug him in to discover what happened, and we see that the synthetic is the same model as Ash from Ridley Scott's original movie.
The late Ian Holm was "resurrected" (with permission from the actor's estate) to achieve this, but even setting aside the controversy surrounding the practice of "digital necromancy," the effects used to portray the character were... not the best.

Alien and Aliens confirmed a franchise was building, but that momentum was dashed by a divisive third film. Director David Fincher explained how Alien 3 made him the avant-garde filmmaker he is today.
Alien 3 has its cult following, but the film is largely panned as a disappointing sequel in the series. David Fincher was reserved when speaking about his experience directing that film, but he confirmed reports the project was doomed from the beginning. Speaking to Variety, Fincher said Alien 3 was a lesson he wouldn't forget. That film went off the rails under his watch, and he vowed not to make the same mistake again. "I look at it this way. On Alien 3, I stopped after that movie looking for permission and I would much rather ask for forgiveness," he said. "So that became my edict. And Se7en, on the page, could have gone a lot of different ways.

Hollywood has made no secret of its reliance on big franchises and sequels throughout the last two decades, from sprawling sagas like the MCU to newcomer film series like John Wick. The 2020s have seen the film industry embrace sequels at an unprecedented scale, dusting off old franchises from the 1980s to cash in on audience nostalgia. While some of these sequels disappointed audiences, others appealed to them by honoring the best of what their franchise has to offer.
Sequels can come in a range of forms, from conclusions to trilogies to long-awaited returns to Hollywood classics. While the 2010s saw a great many remakes and reboots, studios turned back to direct sequels during the 2020s, from family movies to epic blockbusters. Not every sequel impresses the audience, but some gave them exactly what they wanted, leaving them wanting even more from the franchise.

Brains! That's what it takes to make a good zombie movie these days. While the horror genre had a renaissance in the early 2000s, the leg-dragging flesh feasters have waned in popularity recently. Writer/Director Steve Wolsh of Living Dead Media is hoping to turn that around with a holiday twist on the Return of The Living Dead franchise. While details on the production are scant, Wolsh is getting some interesting pieces in order.
Wolsh spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and said that the film won't be a reboot but a sequel to the 1985 original, directed by Dan O’Bannon, and called the installment "a brand new adventure." He also confirmed that this film will use practical effects and real locations instead of greenscreen, which some may argue has robbed the potency and visceral power of the zombie genre in this century. We had learned just about a year ago that rights holders Living Dead Media were developing a reboot of the Dan O’Bannon-created horror-comedy franchise The Return of the Living Dead, which hasn’t spawned a new movie in almost 20 years. In the meantime, Living Dead Media and director Steve Wolsh (Muck, Kill Her Goats) have provided Bloody Disgusting with two exclusive still images from that upcoming Return of the Living Dead movie, suggesting that the project is indeed still happening and coming soon.
Both exclusive images tease a Christmas/Winter theme for the next installment in the Return of the Living Dead franchise, the first one seemingly teasing a chilly new take on the Tarman.

A massive Easter egg linked Alien: Romulus to the first two Alien movies. It's now confirmed Ripley was aboard the Romulus along with the ejected Xenomorph from the original film.
Alien: Romulus dropped its first Easter egg in the opening scene, which showed Weyland-Yutani recovering the Xenomorph Ripley flushed out in the first Alien film. That reveal sparked speculation that Alien: Romulus hid more Alien references as an incentive for repeat viewings; in an interview with Cinemablend, VFX Supervisor Daniel Macarin said they sneaked in an Elen Ripley "cameo" in one scene. "I don't want to put something in there that the audience is going to go, 'Oh look, there it is,'" he said. "And then people start guessing about that. They're thinking about it." That's why most audiences didn't see Ripley's escape pod docked to the doomed ship.

The Alien franchise was actually created by the late writer Dan O’Bannon and his colleague Ronald Shusett, who wrote the original story, which was later adapted into one of the best sci-fi and horror movies of all time. It was Ridley Scott who made the franchise popular with his Alien movie, and the rest is, as you know quite well – history.
Numerous movies from the franchise have been made, as well as series, and we have seen the franchise evolve in many different ways. And it is still evolving, which is a fact that a lot of fans are very, very happy about.
In light of that fact, you can imagine that the fans are also exploring their own theories and possibilities through various artistic forms. While browsing the Internet, we found a very interesting piece of fan art that we wanted to share with you and that you will most certainly enjoy!
