  • Auditioned for the role of Mammy in Autant en emporte le vent (1939), but lost the role to Hattie McDaniel. Surviving screen tests of the pre-barbecue corset-lacing scene between Mammy and Scarlet, with Paulette Goddard and Joan Bennett as Scarlet, have survived.
  • Lively African-American stage and screen character actress. She ran away from home at the age of twelve to join up with a traveling carnival show, where she earned $7 per week singing and dancing. For the next two decades, she performed in vaudeville, circuses and night clubs before working in Hollywood.
