Following the magical moment of Wicked: Part One enchanting audiences ahead of Thanksgiving, a return to the land of Oz will take place in 2025 when the second film in the duology comes out.

Those anxious to see how the story of Ariana Grande’s Glinda and Cynthia Erivo’s Wicked Witch of the West, formerly known as Elphaba, have a little under a year before the second half of the story will arrive in theaters. The film underwent a title change in December 2024 to Wicked: For Good.

Universal closed out its CinemaCon presentation Wednesday with an emotional first look at Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good, the second part of his Oscar-winning musical fantasy. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were onstage with Chu and producer Marc Platt.

The journey from celebrated revisionist tale to Broadway sensation to box office phenomenon with 10 Academy Awards nominations has been a long one, but it's safe to say the cultural footprint of "Wicked" has grown exponentially over the past few months. Though we still have many months ahead before we see how director Jon M. Chu adapts the second half of the stage show to the screen with "Wicked: For Good," its pop-u-lar-ity shows no signs of slowing down. In the meantime, however, the "not Part 1" that we do have culminates in Cynthia Erivo delivering a show-stopping performance of "Defying Gravity."

“Wicked: Part Two’s” official title, “Wicked: For Good,” prompted some mixed reactions online when it was first revealed in December. Director Jon M. Chu, however, believes the title of the second installment has certainly been changed for the better.

“Who wants a movie called ‘Wicked: Part Two’?” Chu told Variety on the National Board of Review Awards gala carpet on Tuesday night in New York City. “On the script, it always said, ‘For Good,’ and so it was just a point of like, ‘Do we really want to call this “Part Two”?’ And nobody wants that.”

The title is a reference to the penultimate song of the hit Broadway musical, in which Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo in the film adaptation) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) sing about how their relationship has impacted their lives. Chu noted that no other film titles were under consideration. “I mean, that’s the destination.

Smash-hit musical movie “Wicked” is flying into homes this New Year’s Eve — with a load of deleted scenes, commentary and other extras.

Following its theatrical run, the Universal Pictures film, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, will be available exclusively to purchase or rent on Dec. 31, 2024, on major digital platforms. Universal Pictures has revealed a new featurette for the highly anticipated Wicked film, which shows how the singing was recorded live on the set. For movies, the singing is usually recorded away from the set in a more controlled environment.

In the video, director Jon M. Chu says, “They are the best singers in the world, and so in every scene, they have been singing live.” Cynthia Erivo added: “We chose to sing live because it meant that we would be further connected to the words we were saying and to each other.” Ariana Grande said: “It was an immediate no-brainer for Cynthia and I. We both were like, well, of course, we’re singing live.”

When Will Wicked Part One come out?

Wicked Part One almost went head to head with Disney’s Moana 2 on November 27, 2024, and before that, it was set to bow Christmas 2024, but it moved up a week to the Friday before Thanksgiving, November 22, 2024. Its new opponent will be Paramount’s Gladiator II starring Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal among others.

Universal Pictures has announced that Wicked tickets are on sale now! The studio has also released a new TV spot, which is the first promo that shows the highly anticipated singing in the film.

Universal’s massive musical tentpole bet Wicked originally was dated to go head-to-head with Disney Animation’s five-quad movie Moana 2 on Wednesday, November 27, the day before Thanksgiving, but will now go five days earlier on Friday, Nov. 22. A very smart release date change.

Both movies are aimed at females. But Wicked counts a fanbase of a reported 30M people from around the globe who’ve seen the Stephen Schwartz stage show. Not to mention, it’s the first of two parts — this movie has to work. Uni isn’t plotting a Horizon scenario here.

The new earlier date puts it up against Paramount’s Gladiator II, creating potentially a Barbenheimer moment: One highly anticipated big movie aimed at dudes, the other at females. There’s a lot of box office upside with both movies ahead of the Thanksgiving break, and, as we saw over the Barbenheimer weekend, moviegoers will watch both.

It was a Wicked union between Idina Menzel and Cynthia Erivo as the actresses and singers came together to close out the 2024 Tony Awards.

Menzel and Erivo took the stage at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City to present Best Musical, which ultimately went to The Outsiders.

However, before presenting the category nominees, Menzel, Broadway’s first Elphaba, shared a sweet moment with Wicked movie Elphaba Erivo.

“I’m just going to go off the script real quick to say how excited I am to see what I know is going to be an amazing performance in that movie that you’re doing,” Menzel said, referencing the film adaptation of the Wicked musical.

“Wicked Part Two” has been moved up a month, with the second and final chapter of Jon. M Chu’s stage adaptation opening not over Christmas Day 2025 but instead Thanksgiving weekend 2025. Starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, Universal’s musical fantasy will drop on November 26, 2025. Why the date change? Well, would you want to open against “Avatar 3 if you don’t have to”?

This is the first bit of musical chairs to come after the Walt Disney Company announced a slew of new dates last week, including moving “Avatar 3” back a year to December 2025, moving the next two “Avengers” films each back a year to May 2026 and 2027 and slotting two “Star Wars” films for May 2026 and December 2026. Film Independent has revealed the television nominations for the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which this year have gone gender-neutral, just like its film colleagues. As revealed online Tuesday morning by Asia Kate Dillon (“Billions“), the annoncement included a winner: Apple TV+’s “Pachinko” won for best new ensemble cast, including Soji Arai, Jin Ha, Inji Jeong, Minha Kim, Kaho Minami, Lee Minho, Steve Sanghyun Noh, Anna Sawai, Jimmi Simpson and Yuh-jung Youn.

Overall, leading the nominees were ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” FX’s “The Bear,” Apple TV+’s “Severance” and HBO Max’s “Severance,” all tied with three nods each.

Film Independent announced the TV nominations for the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Tuesday morning, with four shows in particular leading the pack. ABC’s beloved comedy “Abbott Elementary,” FX’s critical darling “The Bear,” the HBO Max limited series “Station Eleven” and the acclaimed Apple TV+ drama “Severance” scored the most nominations of any show with three each.

The Apple TV+ series “Pachinko” won the Best Ensemble award.

New this year, as with the film nominees, is a switch to gender neutral acting awards with the Best Actor and Best Actress categories replaced by a 10-nominee Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series award. In addition to this change, a Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series award has been added to honor performances outside of the leading roles.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards are unveiling their 2023 nominees for television Tuesday morning. The reveal marks a previously announced expansion of the TV categories, as well as a move to gender-neutral acting races this year in both television and film, the latter of which were revealed last month during the Spirits’ film nominations.

Film Independent has revealed the TV nominees for the 2023 Spirit Awards.

Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Severance and Station Eleven landed three nominations each, the most of any series.

Notable nominees include Emmy winners Quinta Brunson and Sheryl Lee Ralph of Abbott Elementary, who earned Emmys in September for best writing for a comedy series and supporting actress, respectively, for the ABC sitcom. Emmy nominee Janelle James was also honored with a supporting performance nomination. Other nominees from September’s Emmys include Yellowjackets‘ Melanie Lynskey, Station Eleven‘s Himesh Patel and Severance‘s Adam Scott.

While Till star Danielle Deadwyler was not recognized in the film categories for her acclaimed performance in the United Artists drama, she did earn a supporting performance nod for her role in Station Eleven.

Netflix announced the comedy event “Death to 2021” will premiere Dec. 27.

The special tells the story of yet another dreadful year through a documentary style, mixing archival footage gathered over the year with commentary from fictitious characters played by Hugh Grant, Lucy Liu, Tracey Ullman, Samson Kayo, Joe Keery, William Jackson Harper, Stockard Channing, Cristin Milioti, Diane Morgan, Nick Mohammed and more.

In a first-look clip from the special, which you can watch below, an “average British citizen,” played by Morgan, shares her experience with online dating during the pandemic. “I got on quite well with one of them,” says the character. “We even had a cuddle.” The scene then cuts to the pair on a virtual date over Zoom, awkwardly leaning towards their computers.

The new trailer for Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation of “In the Heights” has Anthony Ramos as Usnavi asking, “Can we make a little noise tonight?” They picked a good night on Oscar Sunday.

“In the Heights” is one of three trailers that premiered during tonight’s Oscars, along with “West Side Story” and “Summer of Soul.” Lin-Manuel Miranda introduced the clip by saying the first movie he saw in a theater was the Best Picture winner “Kramer vs. Kramer” when he was just six weeks old, joking that he was the only one in the theater not crying.
