Susin started her career in television feeding cast and crew muffins and bologna sandwiches on the internationally acclaimed and award-winning teen drama, Degrassi Junior High. After writing a spec script for the show, she was hired to write in the second season and went on to write 16 episodes of Junior High and High. Since then Nielsen has been a writer on many award-winning teen, 'tween and adult series, including The Adventures of Shirley Holmes (for which she won a Gemini Award for Best Writing in a Children's of Youth Program), Edgemont, Heartland, Arctic Air and the animated series, What About Mimi and Braceface. She also co-created the preschool series, Franny's Feet along with the live-action series Robson Arms, acting as head writer and showrunner for three successful seasons. She was head writer and showrunner on the half-hour comedy series Alice, I Think, which she adapted for television from the best-selling novels by Susan Juby. She is the creator, head writer and showrunner of the critically acclaimed 1 hour series, Family Law. In addition to her successful career in television, Susin is a bestselling novelist. In 2008 Tundra Books published Nielsen's first wholly original young adult novel, Word Nerd to great critical acclaim. Her second novel, Dear George Clooney: Please Marry My Mom was published by Tundra in fall 2010. She was awarded the Governor General's Award for her third, The Reluctant Journal of Henry K Larsen in 2012, which was followed by We Are All Made of Molecules in 2015, Optimists Die First in 2017, No Fixed Address in 2018 and Tremendous Things in 2022. Susin lives in Vancouver, Canada.
