  • Was twice nominated for Broadway's Tony Award: in 1968 as author of Best Play nominee "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg," and in 1975 as author of Best Play nominee "The National Health."
  • His play, "Passion Play," was awarded the 1984 Drama Logue Award for Outstanding Production at the Mark Taper Forum Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
  • His play, "The National Health," on Broadway in New York City was nominated for a 1975 Antoinette Perry (Tony) Award for Best Play.
  • He has freely admitted that several of his plays are autobiographical. It has been widely remarked that Nichols has, in these plays, a tendency to depict himself in a most unflattering light.
