Luca Guadagnino on Daniel Craig, Sex Scenes, Neopuritanism, Unrequited Love, Stalkers, and the Philosophy of ‘Queer’
Image
Luca Guadagnino was a lonely boy living in Palermo when he first read William S. Burroughs’ novella “Queer.” He would’ve been 14 when the book first came out in 1985, when gay liberation was already on its cultural downward slope because of AIDS, and the book was written in the early 1950s. But Burroughs’ story of American-expat-in-Mexico Lee and his obsessive romance with a lithe expat American soldier, Allerton, still emerged as an influential text for the queer literary canon but especially for Guadagnino’s imagination education.

Now, nearly four decades after first reading the book at 17, Guadagnino, one of the hottest filmmakers currently working — especially because of his other film this year “Challengers” — has finally realized the dream of bringing Burroughs’ world to the screen. Those men, Lee and Allerton, are played by Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey in respectively career-reinventing and career-inventing performances. And the film, as Guadagnino said...

French Hitmakers Hugo Selignac, Alain Attal Set for Banner 2024 With Studiocanal and Netflix on Gilles Lellouche’s ‘L’Amour Ouf,’ and With WB, HBO Max on Boukherma Brothers’ Next Film (Exclusive)
Image
Alain Attal and Hugo Selignac have formed a producing duo known for delivering original, starry French films that probe uneasy subjects that earn B.O. gold and critical laurels. Attal is in Cannes with Un Certain Regard title “Rosalie,” while Selignac has “Omar à la Fraise” in Critics’ Week.

The pair is now about to hit a new milestone in 2024, starting with Gilles Lellouche’s epic romance drama “L’Amour Ouf,” which boasts a budget of €32 million ($34 million) and marks Studiocanal’s biggest investment in a French-language film to date. They also have “And Their Children After Them,” an adaptation of Nicolas Mathieu’s Goncourt Prize-winning novel to be directed by Ludovic and Zoran Boukherma (“Teddy”), which has been boarded by Warner Bros. France and HBO Max and France Televisions, the first French movie to bring together these three partners.

“L’Amour Ouf” also marks the first film co-acquired by Canal Plus,...

Sofia Coppola
Listen to Sofia Coppola’s Playlist for Priscilla as Production Commences
Sofia Coppola
Sofia Coppola has begun production on Priscilla, her Priscilla Presley biopic starring Cailee Spaeny and, filling Elvis’ massive shoes, Jacob Elordi. Adapting Presley’s memoir Elvis and Me would suggest a much greater centering of the lesser-known spouse and a far thornier depiction than Baz Luhrmann’s abysmal biopic—a troubled, drug-dependent, jealous, unfaithful man.

Saying music matters to Sofia Coppola is like revealing Spike Lee knows a dolly shot, but even still we’re pleasantly surprised she—via her new Instagram—shared a playlist made for production’s commencement. If one of American cinema’s few great needle-droppers says it’s “nice to have music in the morning while we’re setting up,” who’s to argue?

You will, probably pointedly, find no Elvis, but this selection—at turns swoony, love-struck, melancholic, heartbroken—is très Coppola: Cocteau Twins, New Order, Bryan Ferry, Prince, Elvis Costello, and (I think it’s sweet) Phoenix.

Don't Make Me Go (2022)
Don’t Make Me Go Review
Don't Make Me Go (2022)
Road trip movies certainly aren’t new but some have come to define cinema and so it takes something special to stand out from a crowded marketplace. Don’t Make Me Go, the latest from Actor/Director Hannah Marks is a Road Trip movie with a difference, it stars John Cho as Max Park, a single dad who discovers he has a terminal disease and intends to make the most of the time he has left with his daughter Wally, played by Mia Isaac, with whom he has a fractious relationship.

The bulk of the film is dedicated to the pair’s journey across the States to his college reunion, making stops along the way to visit Casinos, dance and bond in both bizarre and heartwarming fashion. As the film unwinds we get to know why Max is perhaps so uptight and protective with his ex-wife Nicole running off with a...

What Year is This?: Michel Franco on “New Order”
Image
Michel Franco's New Order is showing exclusively on Mubi in the United Kingdom starting September 10, 2021.After six features in ten years, Michel Franco’s filmography is now large enough for his latest to court comparisons to his previous works. But both thematically and visually, New Order is something of an outlier. Set in a dystopian present-day Mexico, it’s a chronicle of a revolution gone wrong. Widespread inequalities trigger a mass uprising; the poor turn against the rich, and as the rebellion grows violent, the armed forces seize the opportunity to reinstate their own order, and the uprising turns into a bloodbath. Entry point into the nightmare is Marianne (Naian González Norvind), a young woman from a wealthy family in Mexico City. New Order opens on her wedding day, and for a while Franco lets us hobnob with the crème de la crème partying at her family’s sumptuous villa,...

‘The Sparks Brothers’ Review: Edgar Wright’s Irresistible Celebration of 50 Years of Art-Pop’s Brightest Sparks
Image
How to introduce an entity as mercurial as Sparks, the band that forms the subject of Edgar Wright’s fantastic, fond, fizzy documentary portrait, to those who don’t know them? With over five decades and 25 albums’ worth of music, sibling frontmen Ron and Russell Mael have been virtually the only constant in a group whose lineup has changed with roughly the frequency of iPhone updates, and whose sound pinballs around the pop-musical map, from glam-rock to prog-rock to electro to disco to techno. So maybe, given their fondness for the French New Wave, we’ll just say: one sings, the other doesn’t. Or, as suggested by a great clip of an aghast Shelley Winters on a 1981 talk show: One sings, the other looks a bit like Hitler.

In any case, after the 140 minutes of “The Sparks Brothers” zip by like a tight half-hour, even the previously uninitiated may...

Joe Corallo: Netflix Is Our Friend
Last week, fellow columnist Molly Jackson and I had a conversation about binge watching on Netflix. Specifically about Young Justice, which she wrote about here. The reason it came up was because people have been encouraged to binge watch Young Justice in order to convince Netflix to pick up the show to give it another season. Young Justice is far from the only example of this at the most popular streaming service around.

Netflix has been breaking new ground lately by not breaking any new ground at all. By that I mean they’ve been at the forefront of offering people a whole hell of a lot of what we already know we like, but, technically, it’s new now! Even when they give us something “new” it’s almost always a vehicle for an already well established, accomplished actor, comedian, or creator with a long resume. I understand that this is an arguable point,...

'Pretty in Pink': 15 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About the John Hughes Classic
Thirty years have passed since the release of "Pretty in Pink" (on February 28, 1986), and yet we're still bewildered by the teen romance's climax.

Maybe we need to think of the John Hughes-scripted film as Gen X's own "Casablanca." The ending makes more sense if you think of Duckie (Jon Cryer) as Humphrey Bogart, letting the woman he loves (Molly Ringwald's Andie) go off with the dull-but-decent guy (Andrew McCarthy's Blane) because he's finally admitted to himself that he's a chivalrous romantic who values her happiness above his own. Yeah, it's a stretch, but it's just one of many interpretations to spin out of this Hughes classic.

In honor of the film turning the big three-0, here are 15 surprising facts about the best movie ever named after a Psychedelic Furs song.

1. Hughes wrote the role of Andie Walsh for Ringwald, but even though she'd starred in his...

Jack Antonoff
Album Review: Fun.'s Jack Antonoff travels back to the '80s for Bleachers' 'Strange Desire'
Jack Antonoff
As one-third of fun., Jack Antonoff gets to explore many facets of his pop sensibilities. On “Strange Desire,” the debut album from his side project, Bleachers,” out Tuesday (15), he gets to indulge his quirkier side, and sing lead. Even though Antonoff wasn’t born until 1984, “Strange Desire” is so awash in ‘80s sounds, from big, echo-y drums, to funky, jangly guitars, that it’s almost possible to take each song and come up with its ‘80s analog. Squiggly guitar riffs crash into each other, layered vocals soar over synths, and it feels like a dance party could break out on the street where you live at any moment. Bleachers could share a bill with Modern English, Omd, Oingo Boingo, The Cult, The Cure, and New Order. Opening track “Wild Heart” has a light-hearted, skipping keyboard similar to The Buggles’ “Video Killed The Radio Star,” before it gives way to walls of synths.

From There To Here episode 3 review
From There To Here reaches a dramatic climax this week, tying up all its loose threads into a tidy bow

Feature

This review contains spoilers.

“Families have stories, that’s what keeps them together,” says Samuel Cotton (Bernard Hill should be given British national treasure status) midway through tonight’s final trip to Manchester, this time on the dawn of a new millennium. Peter Bowker’s flawed but overall tender family rigmarole concluded with a fitting final chapter. From There to Here has always been about family right from the beginning and here it reached a peak with the Cottons, secrets spilling out of every aperture.

Continuing directly on from last week’s midpoint, From There to Here picked up with Daniel awakening in his hospital bed to the unity of both his lives – wealthy confectioner Daniel and industrial cleaner Daniel. Claire glowered at him, Joanne was a mixture of confusion,...

Sennen – Lost Harmony Album Review
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Website: www.sennen.org.uk

Facebook: www.facebook.com/sennen

Released: April 16th, 2012

Since their first record, Widows, was released in 2005, Sennen have been formulating and building their quietly gigantic sound from the bottom of the structure until they got to the penthouse suite at the top, today. Unlike the more traditional craftsmen, though, the four-piece didn’t need hammers and nails, hardhats and bricks, scaffolding and ladders. All they needed was a bit of inspiration, creativity, judgement and a concise idea of what they wanted to achieve. They had these. Now all they needed was a studio, paper and pen/laptop, a bit of belief from labels and fans alike and luck. They had these, also. The result of all these aspects is a band who can produce the most melancholic of tracks yet still elevate you to someplace new, a place reserved for music...

Don’t You Forget About Me: 'Pretty In Pink,' 'Breakfast Club' & 'Empire Records' Soundtracks Getting Vinyl Reissues For Record Store Day
If there are any filmmakers who’ve worked their way through record stores as much as folks like Quentin Tarantino or even Wes Anderson, it would have to be John Hughes and Allan Moyle. So perhaps it’s no real surprise that on annual Record Store Day, where you can come out and support your local independent record stores on April 21st this year, there will be soundtrack reissues from both filmmakers.

First is Hughes’ “The Breakfast Club,” which will surely find many record enthusiasts doing some Judd Hirsch-style fist pumping as they pick up their all-white 12-inch vinyl pressing of the album. It’s hard to capture an entire mood of a film with a single soundtrack, especially when that film lingers on a dreary Saturday spent in detention with a few high school students looking to find themselves like in “The Breakfast Club,” but between the seminal...

New Order headlining Saturday at Bestival 2012
Peter Hook, New Order, and Bernard Sumner at an event for Top of the Pops (1964)
New Order have been confirmed as headliners at this year's Bestival. The band will headline Saturday's programme on the Main Stage at the Isle of Wight event, a slot which has previously been occupied by acts including Kraftwerk, The Cure and Amy Winehouse. Organiser Rob da Bank said in a statement on Tuesday morning (February 14): "So I've got 'Blue Monday' blaring out of the Bestival HQ office speakers as we unveil our iconic Saturday night headliner New Order. It doesn't get better than that... but it does! "'True Faith', 'Bizarre Love Triangle', 'Fine Time', 'Regret' - so many amazing records I grew up listening to and still listen to now and they (more)...

Hey Toronto! Featuring a fantastic soundtrack--including the title track by the Psychedelic Furs and songs by Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths and New Order--and great supporting turns by Harry Dean...

Graceland: Pop Classic or Boring Dinner-Party Soundtrack?
AudioPlayer.setup("http://www.nerve.com/files/players/audio/player.swf", { width: 350 }); Graceland: Pop Classic or Boring Dinner-Party Soundtrack? On the twenty-fifth anniversary of Paul Simon's biggest success, we settle the debate, once and for all.  By Michael Edison Hayden and Stephen Deusner Graceland is a terrible album By Michael Edison Hayden, GQ 1986 was a good year for pop music. In England, New Order's Brotherhood gave birth to the spiritual club anthem "Bizarre Love Triangle," The Pet Shop Boys released the lush, satirical Please, and The Smiths released their romantic masterpiece, The Queen is Dead. In America, dead-end white communities found a voice for Reagan-era feelings of neglect with Slayer's Reign in Blood, Janet Jackson tangled pop airwaves with black female eroticism and feminism in Control, and Run-d.M.C. infused a sense of moral urgency into rap with the near-perfect Raising [...]...

Who’S It For? It’s your basic run-of-the-mill thriller with a good mystery brewing. Spoiler Alert — there will be some things that are discussed in this review. Don’t worry, I do my best when it comes to spoilers so if you aren’t already out the door buying your ticket to Unknown you should be safe. Don’t trust other critics with spoilers though … ever.

Easy A Refire
I’m not one to talk up a movie more than once, especially when there isn’t any pressing reason to do so, but I was playing around with some images, and find myself moved to throw out another mention of Easy A.

I’m going to tell you straight out – if a movie critic tells you they’re excited, interested, anticipating, or otherwise positively moved by a film release more than once or twice a year, move on. They’re either clueless, bandying about hype recklessly, haven’t seen nearly enough films, or all of the above.

That said, I’m pretty interested in getting the chance to view Easy A, and I’m the first to admit that it’s a strange title to follow up such remarks with.

Why does something like this pique my interest, even following up my statement that you should be wary of interested movie critics?...

Godspeed You! Black Emperor Return, Bringing Back Another Great Punctuation Band
Time has not been kind to post-rock, a mostly instrumental brand of indie that combined prog, noise, electronic and jam elements for a swirling brew that ruled the underground for a few minutes at the turn of the millennium. Still, one of the key groups from that scene is back, as Canadian collective Godspeed You! Black Emperor is back after a seven year hiatus. In an online statement, they announced that not only will they be curating the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in the U.K. but they'll also play a handful of other dates in Europe as well as nine American cities. It's an exciting time for anybody who loves fuzz and volume.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor don't have a ton of recorded material, though their 2000 album Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven is largely considered a cornerstone of the whole genre (along with the likes of...

Hot Tub Time Machine Soundtrack
The Hot Tub Time Machine soundtrack. That mere title alone is so communicative of both the tone and ambition of this new John Cusack-toplined comedy that the simple sight of those four little words is all you need in order to make the call as to whether you want to see the movie or whether you think it likely to be as seismic a catastrophe for modern cinema as Michael Haneke slipping while getting out of the shower and fatally cracking his skull on the Palme d’Or he keeps on the shelf behind the toilet. Essentially it would appear that Steve Pink’s film is the episode of Family Guy where Peter and Brian journey back to the ‘80s and piss off the chicken while simultaneously inventing Rick Astley, only elongated to feature length and with Chevy Chase’s hot tub repairman supplanting the Grim Reaper as gatekeeper...

For anyone wondering when Aubrey O'Day will be releasing a solo album — you will have to wait a little bit longer. The singer may be hitting the studio here and there to guest on tracks, but she is not quite ready to work full-time on her post-Danity Kane audio output.

"I had a very traumatic experience on and off working with Bad Boy and the cameras constantly in there. There was never vibes ... a lot of that matters when you're making music," she told MTV News. "When we made music, it was two to three cameras, two to three inches from our face, waiting to catch a bad note so they could have a show. So I haven't been overly...

Jennifer's Body - Music From The Motion Picture (Review)
Putting together a proper motion picture soundtrack is something of a lost art. Often thought of as a final step in packaging a film for it's final release, many films suffer from a lack of care when it comes to a proper sonic counterpart. While original scores can set the mood and tone of a film, working brilliantly for epics that require no "pop" or "rock" enhancement, in some cases the latter works better and that's usually where the problems start to show. When done correctly, a proper soundtrack should conjure images of the film for listeners long after the last flicker of the projector, or the final screen of the DVD.

The first decade of the "new millennium" has been overtly devoid of memorable soundtracks for the horror genre (sans a few exceptions), as if the music supervisor was brought on-board last-minute and given a tiny budget to work with.

When Aubrey O'Day isn't busy stirring up controversy around Playboy pictorials or prepping for her run in the Las Vegas stage production of "Peepshow," she is busy in the studio, working on new music in a post-Danity Kane world.

Recently, she released a cover of Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time" with Young Money's Shanell Woodgette, and now MTV News has a preview of O'Day's latest musical venture, a song that samples the New Order classic "Bizarre Love Triangle." The version MTV News has obtained is a "version three remix" of the track that was leaked to some blogs late last week.

The song, "Never Fallin'," features Roscoe Umali rapping on the track. O'Day changed the lyrics of the song's chorus to address people who criticize her,...
