Biography

New Order

Edit

Biography

    • New Order is an English rock band formed in 1980 by vocalist and guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris. New Order were formed in the demise of their previous post-punk band Joy Division, following the suicide of vocalist Ian Curtis. They were joined by Gillian Gilbert on keyboards later that year. Their integration of post-punk with electronic and dance music made them one of the most critically acclaimed and influential bands of the 1980s.

Trivia

  • Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris and Peter Hook were all part of rock group Joy Division. With the suicide of leading singer/songwriter Ian Curtis in 1980, they decided to form New Order in the following year and Gillian Gilbert joined the band. "Blue Monday", released in 1983, became their first top 30 hit. During their brief hiatus in the 1990's, all four members were part of other minor groups: Sumner was part of Electronic along with Johnny Marr and Pet Shop Boys duo Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe; couple Stephen Morris and Gilbert made The Other Two; and Hook was part of Monaco , that had the hit "What do You Want From Me?".
  • Current members (as of 2018) Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, Gillian Gilbert, Phil Cunningham and Tom Chapman. Peter Hook left the band in 2007 after many disagreements with the other members.
  • Performing at a concert the lead singer/guitarist said between songs, "These instruments cost as quite a lot of money. We would appreciate it if you clapped a little louder".
