Biography

    • When John Neville was in his early sixties, Terry Gilliam cast him in the title role of Les aventures du baron de Munchausen (1988). Although the film was a financial failure, Neville's starring role in this major production, as well as his fine performance, led to an explosion in his career. He afterward received numerous roles in feature films and television. A new generation came to know him from his recurring role in the hit television series X-Files : Aux frontières du réel (1993) and later feature film The X-Files, le film : Combattre le futur (1998), in which he played a mysterious character known only as "The Well-Manicured Man".

      He emigrated to Canada in 1972, and took up Canadian citizenship. He was artistic director of the Stratford Festival (Ontario, Canada) from 1984 to 1989.

  • He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1965 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to drama.
  • He was awarded the C.M. (Member of the Order of Canada) on April 6, 2006 and invested on May 4, 2007 from the Canadian Governor General for his services for his Canadian Theater and Drama. He was a renowned actor and an esteemed artistic director. In addition to performing roles in many theaters, film and television productions, he earned a reputation as an artistic director willing to take risks and able to challenge and motivate actors. The Stratford Festival of Canada, as well as the Citadel and Neptune theaters, flourished under his skillful directorship. He also co-founded the Young Neptune Company travelling troupe, which has reached over 350,000 students across Nova Scotia. His talent and passion have contributed to the development and strengthening of performing arts communities across the country.
