Louis Nerz

  • His manuscript of Austria's most important contribution to expressionist cinema, the horror story Orlac's Hands, attracted attention. The director there was the German Robert Wiene, for whose Viennese productions Nerz wrote the screenplays several times at the end of his film career.
  • He was an Austrian screenwriter and actor.
  • Without having enjoyed any artistic training, Louis Nerz started his career in 1885 at the Budweiser City Theater.
  • After initial leading roles, however, he soon had to settle for smaller roles. In the 1920s, Nerz was primarily active in film as a screenwriter and in this capacity worked primarily for 'Pan-Film'.
  • Nerz, who also sat on the board of directors of the Austrian Film Association, also worked for Pan-Film as artistic director and dramaturge.
  • Louis Nerz already appeared in his first movie in 1914.
  • His first roles were initially that of a young lover, but over the years LouisNerz quickly grew into character roles.
  • He began his professional career at the state railroad but he soon decided to become an actor.
  • He made his stage debut at the Budweiser Stadttheater in 1885, it followed engagements in numerous other small cities before he came to Vienna in 1891 with an engagement at the Raimund theater. Other engagements led him to Prague, Hamburg and finally back to Vienna.
  • Nerz, a Jew, died two months before his homeland was annexed by Nazi Germany.
