- Father of teen idol Leif Garrett and Dawn Lyn who was Dodie, the little girl in My Three Sons (1960).
- Has also done stunts and was a cameraman. He is one of the founding members of Society of Operating Cameramen.
- Ex-father-in-law of Michael Whitby.
- He left his wife when his son Leif Garrett was very a young. Although he briefly saw his son in hospital in 1979, the family did not reconcile until near the end of his life.
