Knox Goes Away Ending Explained
Image
Spoilers are ahead for Knox Goes Away's ending.

Knox Goes Away ends with John Knox in prison and succumbing to dementia. Plotting with his friend and colleague Xavier, Knox arranges his own arrest to clear his son's name, all while leaving his fortune to his family. Knox Goes Away's ending is fitting for a crime thriller that boasts a genuinely unique though sometimes flawed premise. Directed by Michael Keaton (Birdman), Knox Goes Away centers on John "Aristotle" Knox (also Keaton), a contract killer with a love of literature. Estranged from his wife, Ruby (Marcia Gay Harden), and his adult son, Miles (James Marsden), Knox's partner-in-crime, Thomas "Tommy" Muncie (Ray McKinnon), is also his closest friend. Exploding Kittens Voice Cast & Character Guide: What The Actors Look Like In Real Life
Image
Exploding Kittens adult animation series showcases humor, mayhem, and animated cats in a biblical twist on divine characters. Television notables like Tom Ellis and Sasheer Zamata bring the characters of Godcat and Devilcat to life in a silly and chaotic way. The new Netflix show inspired by the tabletop card game has mixed reviews but remains true to the original game's spirit of fun and absurdity.

Exploding Kittens unleashes Heaven and Hell on Earth in an irreverent adult animation series supported by a cast of television notables and veteran voice actors. What began as a tabletop card game of the same name created by Matthew Inman (creator of the webcomic The Oatmeal) and former Xbox game designer Elan Lee has since burgeoned into a trending Netflix TV show. Yet, the Exploding Kittens series doesn't directly draw from its namesake, instead opting to adopt the game's signature elements of humor, mayhem,...

A Cat Exorcism Partially Inspired Netflix Series ‘Exploding Kittens’
Image
When it came to adapting his popular tabletop card game into the “Exploding Kittens” 2D animated series (currently streaming on Netflix), Matthew Inman found inspiration in an old girlfriend’s schizophrenic cat, who got so disturbing that a priest was called to exorcise its demons. The premise became the ultimate fight between good and evil when God (Tom Ellis) and the Devil (Sasheer Zamata) are both fired and sent to Earth to reconnect with humanity, trapped inside the bodies of two chubby house cats.

While Godcat is tasked with turning around a dysfunctional family through empathy, Devilcat, his next-door neighbor, stirs up trouble as the destructive anti-Christ. “When I got paired up with [executive producers] Mike Judge and Greg Daniels [of ‘King of the Hill’], it kind of all just came together and it clicked,” Inman told IndieWire.

“Some of the [family] dynamics we wanted to avoid were things that we’re all a little tired of,...

Exploding Kittens Review: When Cats Collide with Cosmic Comedy
Image
Exploding Kittens originated as a popular card game that launched on Kickstarter in 2015, satirizing the stress of daily life through absurd artwork depicting cats in perilous predicaments. The objective was to avoid drawing the eponymous “Exploding Kitten” cards to avoid an explosive fate, creating light-hearted laughs among players. This whimsical premise translated surprisingly well to the animated screen, becoming a Netflix comedy series with vibrant colors and charm.

The show finds God himself in trouble after neglecting his heavenly duties. As punishment, he’s sent to Earth, trapped in the form of a cat, to better understand humanity. He’s placed with Abbie and her dysfunctional family, tasked with bringing them together. But living as a pet isn’t easy—lasers and yarn quickly distract our divine protagonist.

His rehabilitation is complicated by the arrival of Devilcat next door. Also sent to interact with humans, she shares Godcat’s feline instincts and apathetic outlook,...

Exploding Kittens Almost Bombs With Its Outdated Comedy
Image
When it was announced that Matthew Inman's surprise-hit party game Exploding Kittens would be adapted into an episodic animated series on Netlix, it raised a few eyebrows. The game a fast-paced card game meant for two to five players, based entirely around betrayal, explosions, cat toys and a generous dash of weirdness in the vein of Cards Against Humanity doesn't have much in the way of story. It did, however, have mass appeal, given its astounding success as a pitch on Kickstarter. So, naturally, it was prime TV material, right?

Created by Shane Kosakowski and Matthew Inman, Exploding Kittens turns the simple party game into a cosmic battle for good and evil, led by God and the Devil as cute little kitties. God (Tom Ellis) has been slacking at his job lately. He's been neglecting his duties as the all-powerful creator, watching movies about pterodactyls, burning down the west wing of Heaven,...

Image
Quick Links Netflix's Exploding Kittens plot and Cast The Exploding Kittens Card Game What Do the Card Game and TV Show Have in Common?

With much anticipation from fans of the Exploding Kittens tabletop game and the comedic stylings of Matthew Inman of online infamy with his webcomic "The Oatmeal," the recent release of the Netflix Original is set to please. But what is the connection between the award-winning game, The Oatmeal, and TV series? Do they share a common thread besides its creator, or is the Netflix adaptation set to be its own beast?

We will examine the TV show and the card game it is based on to see if they are related beyond a name and artistic style. We will break down both so fans new to the franchise will have a better idea of what to expect, regardless of how they want to experience Exploding Kittens.

‘Exploding Kittens’ Might Be the Answer to Your Family’s Prayers
Image
Even before Covid made a virtue of isolation, experts had already been describing loneliness as an epidemic for years. Now that even the most social among us have had loneliness imposed upon us as a matter of public policy, it seems to be an issue that’s top of mind for TV creators to process through their work. Baby Reindeer revolves around two lonely people who find communion, by chance, over Diet Coke in a neighborhood pub; the disastrous fallout comes later. The titular Mr. & Mrs. Smith find each other in part because they’ve built the kind of lives they can disappear from without causing alarm to friends or loved ones who’d miss them. Ripley’s eponymous protagonist is alone by necessity: the kinds of short cons he’s running for his livelihood depend on his remaining anonymous.

Though loneliness isn’t generally a hilarious topic, it animates our current comedies,...

Prentice Penny’s Onyx Pilot ‘Not Cops’ Not Moving Forward
Image
Exclusive: Onyx is not proceeding with Not Cops, a pilot from former Insecure showrunner Prentice Penny who is under an overall deal at the Disney collective. There is conflicting information over the reasons for the decision, which came days before filming was slated to begin in Atlanta, but timing seems to be a main issue.

Not unlike other projects on the Onyx slate, the half-hour pilot has a provocative premise — it revolves around residents of the Los Angeles neighborhood of Leimert Park who take charge of the safety in their community after defunding the police.

Quietly picked up to pilot about two months ago, Not Cops has not been officially announced, which is not atypical for pilots which are sometimes confirmed when fully cast and starting production.

No one would comment but according to sources, Not Cops was in the middle of casting when the plug was pulled this week,...

“You may as well not shoot it”: Michael Keaton Would’ve Never Agreed to Knox Goes Away, Which He Calls a ‘Jenga Movie’, if it Hadn’t Met 1 Condition
Image
Michael Keaton takes on another hitman role in his new directorial venture, Knox Goes Away. Keaton played a hitman in his directorial debut, The Merry Gentleman, in 2008. The Batman actor revealed that he wouldn’t have taken on the script by Gregory Poirier if he thought the film would not hold up. For Keaton, the film was like a game of Jenga, where every piece had to work for the movie to work.

Knox Goes Away also stars Al Pacino, James Marsden, Marcia Gay Harden, Suzy Nakamura, and John Hoogenakker among others. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2023.

Knox Goes Away Review: Michael Keaton’s Forgettable Neo-Noir Thriller
Michael Keaton
Michael Keaton’s Knox Goes Away begins with hired killer John “Aristotle” Knox (Keaton) in his car, cruising through the night to the sound of a mournful saxophone. It seems like we’re gearing up for one of those long, dark nights of the soul that neo-noir thrillers thrive on, but the film proves unwilling to really drive forward into the darkness. In the end, it’s a tale of male alienation that’s a little too afraid of alienating its audience.

Knox lives alone, only interacting with other members of his morbid industry and Annie (Joanna Kulig), the Polish sex worker who comes to visit him once a week. He carries out each of his jobs with cold precision, before then stashing the money he earns with the utmost care. It’s the perfect role for Keaton, given his unique intermingling of intensity and offbeat charm, and he benefits...

Knox Goes Away Review
Image
Plot: A hitman, Knox (Michael Keaton), discovers he has a fast-acting form of dementia and only has weeks of lucidity left. Shortly after this diagnosis, in a moment of confusion, he botches a hit, killing both his partner and a civilian. As if that weren’t bad enough, his estranged son (James Marsden) shows up on his doorstep needing help covering up a murder.

Review: Knox Goes Away has a premise that’s becoming increasingly popular: an aging killer develops dementia and must put things right while he can. Liam Neeson played a similarly afflicted killer in Memory last year (itself a remake), and Nicolas Cage played another character like this in The Dying of the Light. Neither of those films was great because they focused on everything but the protagonist’s condition. Knox Goes Away is different. Michael Keaton, who also directs (from a script by Gregory Poirier), focuses...

Knox Goes Away starring Michael Keaton in his second directorial outing drops a new trailer
Image
You wanna get nuts? C’mon, let’s get nuts. Through no fault of his own, Michael Keaton’s fun, nostalgic return as Batman had imploded when The Flash would debut to disaster and his follow-up in Batgirl would equally become infamous by getting shelved and locked away. Keaton is bouncing back in a big way with his second directorial effort, Knox Goes Away. Keaton’s directorial debut came in 2008 with the crime thriller, The Merry Gentleman. This originally premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year to mixed reviews - some good & some bad. Set for a limited release in theaters only this March. Yet another hit man film to join the many out there right now. Keaton stars as John Knox, the aging hit man, along with James Marsden as his son, Suzy Nakamura, John Hoogenakker, Joanna Kulig, Ray Mckinnon, Lela Loren with Marcia Gay Harden and Al Pacino. The Canceled Netflix Series Fans Desperately Tried To Save
Image
In a world replete with quick-spreading disinformation and the subsequent, dangerous proliferation of kooky conspiracy theories, the 2021 animated series "Inside Job" — created by Shion Takeuchi (a writer on "Gravity Falls" and "Disenchantment") — was perfectly timed. "Inside Job" posited that every single conspiracy theory you've ever heard — whether it be Reptilians, JFK, the Mandela effect, the flat Earth, or the faked moon landing — were all 100 percent real. Clones were out there, severed heads were being kept alive in labs, and aliens regularly visited Earth. Just like in "The X-Files," ordinary citizens weren't allowed access to this knowledge.

Earth's conspiracies were overseen by a mysterious underground organization called Cognito, Inc., one of six major shadow governments secretly in charge of the world. The other five were the Catholic Church, the Illuminati, Atlantis, the Reptoids, and the Juggalos (tee hee). The central joke of "Inside Job" was that Cognito, Inc. was staffed by flawed,...

Knox Goes Away Review: Keaton Directs & Stars In Overly Ambitious Thriller
Image
Michael Keaton's second feature film, "Knox Goes Away," has several good ideas but suffers from trying to juggle too much at once. The film explores themes of an absentee father reuniting with his son, a hit man's battle with dementia, and a complex crime plot. Keaton's performance is strong, and there are some compelling moments, but the film struggles to find a cohesive rhythm and may have been overly ambitious in its execution.

Fifteen years after his directorial debut, Michael Keaton returns to the director’s chair for the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. His latest is Knox Goes Away, which sees him starring as John Knox, a contract killer diagnosed with a fast-paced form of dementia. Right as he’s set to retire, his estranged son Miles (James Marsden) rushes to his doorstep in desperate need of John’s help. For John, this is the chance for him...

Michael Keaton in Knox (2023)
TIFF Review: Michael Keaton’s Knox Goes Away is a Low-Energy Disappointment
Michael Keaton in Knox (2023)
The protagonist of Knox Goes Away, starring and directed by Michael Keaton, is one of the most low-energy hired killers in cinema history. There’s reason for this: early on audiences discover that John Knox is suffering from a form of dementia––one that moves much faster than Alzheimer’s, he is told––that will cause him to start losing his memory in a matter of “weeks, not months.” That news would be difficult for anyone, but it’s especially problematic for someone whose livelihood depends on his abilities to act decisively, move covertly, and always cover his tracks.

So it’s not going to be easy for Knox to finish off his career as a hitman and cash out. Worse yet it’s also not easy for audiences to become invested in that process. Knox Goes Away is a sub-par effort that may prove of interest to fans of the actor,...

‘Knox Goes Away’ Review: Michael Keaton Directs and Stars in an Entrancing Thriller About a Hit Man With Dementia
Image
“Knox Goes Away” is a silky and entrancing thriller directed by its star, Michael Keaton — but as soon as I heard the film’s premise, I’ll admit I was skeptical. Keaton plays an underworld hit man who is diagnosed with dementia. That sounds a bit trendy, and more than that it sounds like a stunt premise. One almost automatically envisions it in somewhat comic terms. But “Knox Goes Away” doesn’t traffic in comedy — or exaggerated reality. In addition to being a noir that holds you exactly the way a noir should, it may be one of the best dramas about dementia I’ve ever seen.

We meet John Knox (Keaton), a contract killer with manners as soft as his heart is hard, just as he’s starting to experience symptoms. At a diner with his fellow hit man, the gnarly but loyal Muncie (Ray McKinnon), he asks the...

‘Knox Goes Away’ Review: Michael Keaton’s Hitman Drama Undercuts Itself at Every Turn
Image
Editor’s Note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Saban Films will release “Knox Goes Away” in select theaters March 15, 2024.

There’s a strong concept and framework to “Knox Goes Away,” in which Michael Keaton directs himself as a hitman with a rare, fast-escalating form of dementia. But it’s is undercut by stilted dialogue and a stultified pace that turns what could have been a fun thriller into an experience that’s sometimes laughably plodding.

Keaton apparently loves to cast himself as assassins with hearts of gold and emotional turmoil, given that he played a similar character in his previous directorial effort “The Merry Gentlemen,” which was released in 2009. Here, he’s John Knox, a L.A.-based gun for hire with an intellectual bent, who learns in the first minutes of the film that he is suffering from Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, giving him only...

‘Knox Goes Away’ Review: Michael Keaton Directs Himself Into One Of His Most Memorable Performances As A Contract Killer With Dementia – Toronto Film Festival
Image
Michael Keaton, after making his directorial debut with 2008’s The Merry Gentleman, steps behind the camera again with his latest film Knox Goes Away, in which he also delivers one of his finest and most poignant performances as a man facing a rare form of fast-moving dementia, but who is racing the clock to save his estranged son’s life before it is too late.

World premiering tonight at the Toronto Film Festival, Keaton directs an exceptionally fine cast in a terrific noirish drama in which he plays John Knox, a professional contract killer who finds his skills diminishing rapidly — including a hit job gone wrong in which his momentary confusion leads him to accidentally shooting and killing his partner Thomas Muncie (an excellent Ray McKinnon) and leaving behind three dead people and a bloody crime scene he tries to clean up. A medical diagnosis of a rare condition that...

‘Knox Goes Away’ Review: Michael Keaton Is a Hitman With Dementia in Neo-Noir Misfire
Image
It’s getting to be that I’m afraid to leave the house. I mean, you never know when you’re going to run into a hitman. If you see movies on a regular basis, you know what I’m talking about. They seem to be everywhere, and they’re often going through personal problems that affect their work. But few cinematic assassins have been quite as beleaguered as the one in Knox Goes Away, receiving its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Michael Keaton, who also directed the film, plays John Knox, a contract killer diagnosed with a rare disease causing full-onset dementia within a matter of weeks. And that’s only one of his problems.

Another is the sudden reappearance of his estranged adult son, Miles (James Marsden, not underplaying), who shows up at his home covered in blood and begging for help covering up the brutal murder he’s just committed.

‘Knox Goes Away’ Review: Michael Keaton Turns Another Hitman Film Into a Fascinating Character Study
Bill Hader at an event for Paul (2011)
What is it about hit men at this year’s fall film festivals? No sooner had Bill Hader’s “Barry” finished its final season and landed a batch of Emmy nominations than David Fincher’s “The Killer,” starring Michael Fassbender as a contract killer going about his daily (and deadly) work, premiered at the Venice Film Festival to largely favorable notices on its way to a Netflix release. A few days later it was followed by Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,” with Glen Powell as the titular assassin, which picked up more raves as it premiered in Venice, then went to Telluride and the Toronto International Film Festival.

But before “Hit Man” will have its TIFF premiere on Monday, yet another hit man showed up on Sunday night in “Knox Goes Away,” which features Michael Keaton directing and starring as … well, you can figure out what the guy does for a living.

American Born Chinese's 10 Biggest Changes From The Graphic Novel
Image
This article contains discussions/references to racism.

The Disney Plus original series American Born Chinese is based on the Gene Luen Yang graphic novel of the same name, but the series still made many pivotal changes to the original story. Released in 2006 to rave critical reviews, Yang's challenging graphic novel explored themes like racial identity and coming-of-age in a way that had never been broached in any medium before. Though the Disney series' approach to the source material attempts to capture the essence, many details from the story were manipulated or downright changed to reflect a more family-friendly image for the series.

Like many movies and shows based on a book or graphic novel, American Born Chinese took certain necessary liberties with the source in order to fill an eight-episode slate, but some important details were lost in the shuffle. Many of the most challenging aspects of Yang's novel...
