Jamie Lee Curtis' Crime Comedy Series Gets Canceled 2 Months After Streaming Debut
Image
Prime Video is pulling the plug on The Sticky, a heist comedy series inspired by true events. The news comes less than three months after the six-episode show's streaming premiere on Prime Video in December.

Per Deadline,The Sticky has officially been canceled after one season. The decision is likely due to the show failing to draw the high levels of viewership that the streaming platform had been hoping for. Its reception was fairly strong, as it has a score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. There was no mention in the report of the show getting shopped elsewhere for a potential continuation, making it seem more likely than not that this is the end of the line for The Sticky.

2024 Dark Comedy Crime Show With 82% Rt Score Becomes Streaming Hit
Image
A dark comedy crime thriller, with a solid 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes, is showing signs of success on streaming. The closing months of a year are generally not thought of as an exceptionally busy time for television, with broadcast networks going on hiatus for the holidays and streamers holding their biggest titles for the new year. 2024 may be another year that points to a shift, with several hit series debuting recently and more on the way.

Squid Game season 2 is premiering on Netflix as of December 26, making a late play to be technically one of the year's buzziest series. This is coming after Black Doves debuted in early December, very intentionally set as a holiday-themed spy saga, to acclaim from audiences and critics. Showtime's The Agency, led by Michael Fassbender, is another thriller that premiered late to a lot of attention and a quick renewal. A more low-key crime thriller may well follow that success.

There are also awful people who want to prove their prowess. The show is loosely based on ‘the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist.’

The Sticky (Season 1) ‘Prime Video’: Review, Recap, and Ending Explained – What Secrets Does Martin Hide, and How Will Bo’s Return Shape the Future?
Margo Martindale in The Sticky (2024)
Here is a factual statement for dear readers: Twelve years ago, Canada saw its biggest heist, the “Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist.” If the name brought a hint of amusement to you, along with the usual apprehension one gets from seedy crimes like robberies, then Amazon Prime’s “The Sticky” (season 1) would be the perfect choice for you. The “Fargo”-coded dark comedy, featuring a motley crew of characters portrayed by an equally diverse cast, is maddeningly hilarious and delightfully entertaining. With half-an-hour-a-piece six episodes, the season zooms through its cold crime-drama premise with oddly fitting circumstantial humor and zany dialogues. All signs of a great dark comedy.

Prime Video Hit 'The Sticky' Nearly Starred Dan Aykroyd a Lead Role
Image
The Sticky, the six-episode Prime Video series starring Margo Martindale, is streaming now, loosely based on the true story of the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. A story that's almost too wild to believe, the heist occurred from 2011 through 2012, where C$18.1 million (Usd 12.7 million) was stolen from a storage facility in Quebec. Chris Diamantopoulos, known for his work in Silicon Valley, Mrs. Davis, The Boys in the Boat, and many, many more projects, recently spoke to MovieWeb and discussed his role in the series and the actor who was initially eyed for his part as Mike Byrne.

As it turns out, Diamantopoulos wasn't initially drawn to the project, and it took a few changes before the actor was fully onboard with where The Sticky was heading. He explained, "When I read [the script], I didn't immediately jump at it, but I had an agent who stayed on this project and kept calling me about it.

Is Prime Video’s 'The Sticky' Based on a True Story?

Quick Links Prime Video's 'The Sticky' Is a Delightfully Strange Dark Comedy 'The Sticky' Is a Wild and Quirky Tale Based on True Events 'The Sticky' Is Now Available to Stream

The wild and crazy world we live in can serve as some major inspiration for Hollywood creations, with reality often proving to be stranger than fiction. Case in point: the highly-buzzed-about Prime Video dark comedy The Sticky, which features the talents of prolific character actress Margot Martindale and follows a Canadian maple syrup farmer as she concocts a daring heist to steal millions of dollars worth of syrup after being wronged by the authorities.

Despite the far-fetched premise of the engrossing series, it is actually rooted in facts and was loosely based on the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist that took place between 2011 and 2012 in Saint-Louis-de-Blandford, Quebec. Over $18 million in maple syrup was stolen by...

‘The Sticky’ Finale: Prime Video’s Rollicking Heist Comedy Begs for a Second Season
Image
As each episode of “The Sticky” declares, Prime Video’s twisted comedy series about a maple syrup heist in Canada, is definitely not accurately depicting the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. But can you blame creators Brian Donovan and Ed Herro for hearing an event title like that and wanting to let their imaginations run wild?

Across six episodes (and it deserved eight!), “The Sticky” presents an excellent case for television taking completely wild liberties with true events. With that episodic disclaimer explicitly absolving the showrunners of misinforming viewers, they’re essentially creating an original story based on a fun idea. So what if that idea happened in real life, but differently? What if it went this way instead?

The final episode, written by Donovan and Herro and directed by Michael Dowse, sees Ruth (Margo Martindale), Mike (Chris Diamantopoulos), and Remy (Guillaume Cyr) finally follow through on their big plans,...

The Sticky TV Review: The infamous Canadian Maple Syrup Heist becomes a fun true-crime series
Image
Plot: A comedy-drama series about Ruth Landry, a maple syrup farmer who, in defiance of a heartless system, assembles a team to undertake the Canadian heist of the century. The target: the country’s multi-million dollar maple syrup surplus.

Review: It goes without saying that the last decade has been a boon for true-crime fans. From adaptations of podcasts to limited series of every tone imaginable, fictionalized retellings of shocking events that took place have served as wonderful opportunities for actors to stretch themselves in every way imaginable. Over that same stretch of time, Noah Hawley’s anthology series Fargo has proven that even the most bizarre and original stories can compete with true tales when the writing is strong enough. Taking the similar sensibilities of Fargo, Prime Video’s new series The Sticky blends dark humor with a true story to deliver an entertainingly original show that showcases a...

The Sticky Review — Mayhem. Mischief. Delicious Maple Syrup.
Image
Placing a “based-on-a true story” dark comedy in the snowy north carries with it some heavy connotations. The success of the Coen Brothers 1996 film Fargo, and its subsequent prestige television series on FX had mostly staked out this setting as their playground. However, The Sticky looks to needle into the setting while opening up the location. Who thought stealing syrup could be such a fruitful world to explore? With an excellent performance from (character actress) Margo Martindale leading the small ensemble, The Sticky scratched an itch for small-time heists. The Prime Video series maintains momentum and silliness despite intense moments of violence. This helps make the admittedly absurd story shine, despite the inclusion of some tired tropes.

Image
Amazon Prime Video has unveiled the first trailer for the dark comedy series “The Sticky.”

‘We Are Zombies’ Review
Image
Stars: Alexandre Nachi, Derek Johns, Megan Peta Hill, Vincent Leclerc, Benz Antoine, Carlo Mestroni, Guy Nadon, Patrick Abellard | Written by Jerry Frisson, Francois Simard, Anouk Whissell | Directed by Francois Simard, Anouk Whissell, Yoann-Karl Whissell

Knowing this film comes from Rkss – the Canadian filmmaking collective composed of François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell – I couldn’t wait to see it. These three previously created Turbo Kid and Summer of ‘84. Both excellent movies, with Turbo Kid being one of my very favourite movies. They also have another film out this year – Wake Up – which looks just as great, but for now, I was happy to watch We Are Zombies.

The first thing to note about the movie is that it’s not the usual zombie movie. The directors have tried to do something a little bit different. We see a city infested with the living-impaired — also known as non-cannibal zombies — and...

Crisis – Review
Image
Scene from the opioid crisis thriller Crisis, starring Gary Oldman, Evangeline Lilly, and Armie Hammer. Photo: Philippe Bosse. Courtesy of Quiver Distribution.

The crisis at the center of writer/director Nicholas Jarecki’s thriller Crisis is the opioid crisis. The fact-inspired thriller Crisis runs on three lines – a whistle-blowing scientist, a woman recovering from addiction to prescription painkillers unraveling a tragic mystery,, and an undercover DEA agent trying to break up a drug ring running prescription painkillers across the US-Canadian border. The triple thriller has a lot of threads to keep track of but Crisis features a sterling cast headed by Gary Oldman, Evangeline Lilly, and Armie Hammer.

Gary Oldman, Evangeline Lilly and Armie Hammer all head up separate narrative threads that represent different aspects of the vicious circle of the opioid crisis. Although the Covid pandemic has pushed all other crises off the headlines, this one has continued to...

Xavier Dolan Fills “Mommy” Shopping Cart with 10 Jutra Awards (Quebec Oscars)
Xavier Dolan tied contemporaries Philippe Falardeau and Denis Villeneuve by winning his second Best Feature award at the 17th annual Jutra Awards. Quebec’s answer to the Oscars was a rather suspense-less affair as Mommy claimed nine (plus the top box office award honor) awards winning in all major categories with the exclusion of Best Supporting Actor category win, which would only end up going to Dolan’s other nominated film, Tom at the Farm. Pierre-Yves Cardinal was sublime in his predatory type role and as was the case for several nominees, was hard at work on another project and therefore not on hand for trophyware. Ricardo Trogi’s throwback to awkward teen years tale 1987 did win a trio of awards, but if there were any surprises in the Dolan camp it was the acceptance speeches: Dolan delivered a keynote speech type quality for the last win of the night...
