The cast of What We Do in the Shadows was visibly sad when they realized they may be all together for the last time, appearing on stage at Disney FYC Fest at the DGA Theater. But as the sixth and final season of the FX series demonstrated — as well as a slew of alternate endings they screened at the panel — they've gotten pretty good at handling goodbyes.
Showrunner Paul Simms, who parodied the famous finale moments in The Usual Suspects, Rosemary’s Baby, and Newhart in the alternate endings, revealed the additional iconic last-moments reference they were really trying to make happen but couldn't make work.
"The one we talked about most besides these was the ending of M*A*S*H, where he leaves in the helicopter and he spelled out 'Goodbye' in the rocks," Simms said. "We thought, budget-wise, how would we do that? Then for a while we...

The quest to find Zoe Jacobs continues, with more evidence and mysteries piling up. Detective James Cormack continues to juggle the case of Zoe’s disappearance with his father’s plea to help him find his brother Richie. In the third episode, Sam is puzzled to see the word ‘Sapphire’ scribbled atop one of the flyers for Mont Vista Estate. This flyer had been recovered from Zoe’s backpack. It makes Sam think of Sapphire Beach, where they had gone on holiday in their childhood. Sam feels the need to recreate Zoe’s appearance as an adult with the help of a sketch artist and then sends it to the Sapphire Beach Police to check if they have any luck in finding her. Brad, on the other hand, declines being involved in Zoe’s disappearance. He claims that he had seen Zoe and Sean at a liquor store before Zoe disappeared.

FX chairman John Landgraf explained why the network decided to bring What We Do In The Shadows to a close with season 6 of the supernatural comedy series. The FX series follows four vampires and their exhausted familiar sharing a home on Staten Island among other creatures of the night as they hide among everyday humans. Inspired by Taika Waititi's 2014 mockumentary comedy of the same name, FX's series was developed by the movie's co-director Jemaine Clement and stars Kayvan Novak, Harvey Guillen, Natasia Demetriou, Matt Berry, and Mark Proksch.
Despite the hilarious vampire comedy being a continued hit, What We Do In The Shadows season 6 brought the Staten Island vampire's story to a close. However, despite the decision confusing many fans, John Landgraf revealed why the network decided to end the comedy during FX's 2024 TCA panel, which was attended by Screen Rant. “In Dreams Begin Responsibilities” is the title of a new Jonathan Rosenbaum reader, culminating nearly six decades of never-before-compiled writing on film, jazz, and literature. The legendary Chicago-based film critic known for iconoclastic takes on the canon has been published everywhere from Cahiers du Cinéma to Film Comment, Sight and Sound, and, of course, the Chicago Reader, where he succeeded Dave Kehr as head critic starting in 1987. He retired from that post in 2008.
Rosenbaum, turning 82 this February, is in conversation this weekend at New York’s Metrograph with filmmaker (and friend) Michael Almereyda. They’ll discuss Serbian director Dušan Makavejev’s cult classic, erotically charged political comedy “W.R.: Mysteries of the Organism” (1971), controversial for its montage throughline between sexual liberation and communist revolution, as well as the wild corporate satire “Giants and Toys” (1958) from Yasuzō Masumura. After six incredible seasons, What We Did in the Shadows aired its hilarious and delightfully meta series finale in December 2024. The mockumentary about an eclectic group of vampires living together on Staten Island with their familiar, Guillermo, was one of the most consistently funny and inventive shows on television. The final season was one of Wwdits's strongest and cemented its legacy in TV comedy history. While the final 11 episodes featured plenty of fun Wwdits cameos and major revelations, one of the biggest surprises revolved around the character Nadja, played by Natasia Demetriou — and it wasn't related to the plot.
Demetriou's Nadja, the fiery and fiercely independent centuries-old vampire, was one of Wwdits's best characters. From her razor-sharp wit and knack for delivering biting insults to her bizarre relationship with her doll, Nadja was an unforgettable mix of humor and menace. She could switch seamlessly from pining after her past lovers...

As far as comedy TV shows in the last ten years go, it's hard to find one more beloved than "What We Do in the Shadows." Premiering on FX in 2019, the series was based on the movie of the same name by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. Yet, as good as some things are, they must inevitably end.
The "What We Do in the Shadows" season 6 finale served as the series finale, with the vampires saying goodbye after more than 60 episodes and over five years on the air. The 10 Freakiest Film & TV Dolls of All Time — From Chucky to M3GAN - Main Image
When people think of something scary for Halloween, usually they think up some kind of big scary monster or psychopath with a weapon; but there’s also some horror to be found from the exact opposite of big monsters—creepy little dolls.
The horror genre has had some very memorable creepy dolls for decades, and we take a look at some that are worth checking out for anyone looking to get spooked for the Halloween season.
Chucky (Child’s Play)
Probably responsible for a lot of trauma for millennials when it comes to dolls, Chucky made his debut in 1988’s Child’s Play. His origin is that Chucky was originally serial killer Charles Lee Ray who was dying in a toy store, and in a last-ditch effort committed some voodoo to transfer his consciousness into...

Picking the best episodes of FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows” is kind of like… well, like picking your favorite character on “What We Do in the Shadows.” Or your favorite guest star. Or your favorite aspect of the series created by Jemaine Clement and based on the film he made with Taika Waititi in 2014; it’s just wrong, impossible, unnatural — like vampires themselves, some might argue.

Can you believe What We Do in the Shadows season 6 has already released the first four episodes of the final season? It's going to be so hard to say goodbye to everyone's favorite group of hilarious vampires. I'm already mentally prepping myself to have to say goodbye in just a few weeks' time. So when do new episodes come out so you don't miss any?
As mentioned above, the final season has already released the first four episodes. That's because on premiere day on Monday, Oct. 21, 2024, FX aired the first three episodes. And today, episode 4 made its debut. And so that means that new episodes of What We Do in the Shadows season 6 come out weekly on Mondays at 10 p.m. Et on FX. You can also stream new episodes on Hulu the next day on Tuesdays.

Mark Proksch explains how a new character in What We Do in the Shadows season 6 affects his character. Proksch plays Colin Robinson, the show's plainclothes-wearing "energy vampire." In addition to Proksch, What We Do in the Shadows features a leading cast including Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillen, Kristen Schaal, and Doug Jones. The series returns for its sixth and final season later tonight, October 21, airing its first three episodes. From there, What We Do in the Shadows will continue weekly episodes on Mondays until December 16.

What We Do in the Shadows' showrunner Paul Simms recently addressed whether Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement will appear in Season 6. The upcoming season of the fan-favorite FX vampire series will premiere on October 21.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Simms confirmed the duo will not appear in What We Do in the Shadows Season 6, citing their busy schedule. The showrunner, however, revealed that they still found a way to pay homage to Waititi and Clement. "Those guys were very busy doing Time Bandits. So, I hate to disappoint people, but we made sure to pay homage to them by featuring them in some still photos, so they're in there in spirit, if not in flesh," Simms said.

Baron's storyline in What We Do in the Shadows season 6 is explained by showruner Paul Simms. Baron is a decrepit but powerful vampire played by Doug Jones in the popular series What We Do in the Shadows. In addition to Jones, the show features a cast including Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillen, Mark Proksch, and Kristen Schaal. What We Do in the Shadows returns for season 6 on October 21, and will air 11 episodes in what will be its final season.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Simms now describes a key element of Baron's storyline in What We Do in the Shadows season 6. According to the showrunner, the vampire has "discovered the little creatures" from season 5 "secrete a special cream that if he rubs on his skin, returns him to his former glamor." Previously, audiences had seen a version of the character that saw Jones "wearing 50 pounds of prosthetic makeup.

Everyone's favorite group of off-kilter vampires are about to say goodbye in What We Do in the Shadows season 6. Co-created by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, the show has served as a sequel spinoff to their acclaimed 2014 mockumentary horror-comedy about a group of vampires living together in Wellington, New Zealand. The FX show has followed a similar formula, bringing the setting to New York and centering on a new group of vampires and one of their familiars living together and still being well behind the modern times.
What We Do in the Shadows season 6 will be bringing the Emmy-winning comedy to a close, with Guillermo, a few months behind his transformation back from vampire into human, trying to figure out what life he wants away from being a familiar. The vampires, meanwhile, reawaken their fifth roommate they forget they left in hibernation, who tries to reinvigorate the group to conquer the New World.

Colin Robinson can't catch a break even heading into the final season of What We Do in the Shadows. Unlike the rest of the main characters seen in both the TV show and film, Colin is what's known as an energy vampire, who feeds off the life force of both humans and vampires simply by annoying them or boring them. The character is played by comedian and character actor Mark Proksch, who previously starred in the American version of The Office before going on to find further success both prior to and beyond the vampire comedy with Better Call Saul and Netflix's Exploding Kittens.
What We Do in the Shadows season 6 finds the group of vampires working to move on from Guillermo no longer being their and Nandor's familiar and, in the process, recalling they left their fifth vampire roommate, Jerry, in a state of hibernation. Colin, initially thrilled...

Plot: In the sixth and final season of the Emmy-nominated comedy, Nandor, Nadja, Laszlo, Colin and Guillermo will enter the workforce, visit New Hampshire, go to a human dinner party, fête The Baron and conjure a demon — all while trying to find their place and their purpose in this crazy, mixed-up world.

Nandor is not having an easy time letting Guillermo go, as seen in What We Do in the Shadows season 6. The former warlord vampire is played by BAFTA winner Kayvan Novak, who first found success in his home country of England with the likes of prank call show Fonejacker, the political black comedy Four Lions and Thunderbirds Are Go. While the FX vampire comedy helped establish him as a household name for American audiences, he has also found international success with Disney's live-action Cruella movie and Fxx's Archer, among others.

The What We Do in the Shadows franchise has been so durable that a fan might be forgiven for thinking its shows may be just as immortal as its characters. From the mockumentary feature film to its first spin-off, Wellington Paranormal, to the FX series that also uses the movie’s title, we’ve enjoyed dozens of hours’ worth of comedy in this world. Given the facts of undead life for its mostly vampire cast, less discerning creators could have potentially kept it in (bat) flight for dozens more. But said creators are discerning, and whether we’re ready or not, the sixth season will be the last. The silver (bullet) lining: What We Do in the Shadows is going out at the peak of its vampiric powers.

Each What We Do in the Shadows season has been interested in the unique growing pains experienced by Staten Island’s favorite misanthropic vampires, but there’s a sense of catharsis and closure in the series’ sixth and final season. It’d be very easy for What We Do in the Shadows to coast on what’s worked in the previous five seasons without rocking the boat. However, this farewell season channels the appropriate energy as it prepares the audience — and the characters — to say goodbye. There’s heavy awareness and reflection as What We Do in the Shadows’ vampires take stock of what they’ve accomplished throughout their lengthy lives and what they have to show for it all. While they set up multiple storylines that are likely to stretch across the 11-episode season, the most important is the awakening of Jerry (Mike O'Brien), a former roommate of the mockumentary series' Staten Island-based immortals who went into a "super-slumber" in the mid-1970s. Though they promised to wake him up in the '90s, they predictably forgot all about him, and his re-entry into their lives reminds them of forgotten dreams and desires from their pasts.

While the equally delightful "Eagle vs Shark" and "Boy" positioned Taika Waititi as one of the strongest cinematic voices out of New Zealand, it was "What We Do in the Shadows" that turned him into an international superstar. The mockumentary about a group of vampires living together and carrying out their daily lives wasn't just a laugh-out-loud success, it was, as /Film writer Jeremy Mathai describes, "a parody and a satire that borders on farce, but underneath such slapstick joys, it's also a deeply melancholic ode to finding acceptance among those who help make life worth living in the first place." Five years after the film charmed horror fans the world over, FX announced a TV series adaptation with a new gaggle of bloodsuckers, characters that I'd argue have since surpassed the beloved vamps from the film.

After five and a half years, the vampires’ reign over the kingdom of Staten Island is unfortunately coming to an end. Although it doesn’t have quite the same bite it used to, What We Do in the Shadows remains a charming, funny sitcom buoyed by lovable characters and excellent performances by the entire ensemble.
What We Do in the Shadows Season 6 Review
Season 6 of What We Do in the Shadows follows the vampire roommates and their former familiar, Guillermo (Harvey Guillen), as they have existential revelations that send them on a quest to find their purpose in their unique ways. With this being the show’s last season, it’s clear that the writers are trying to set up these characters to go their separate ways, but they get off to a rocky start.

Dark greetings are in order one last time as the cast and crew of What We Do in the Shadows prepare to bid viewers adieu after wrapping filming its sixth and final season earlier this year. TV Insider was on set for a rainy April day in Toronto (the real location of the Staten Island-based vampire roommate comedy from FX), where we were welcomed into their abode. Located on a sound stage, we joined other reporters for a front-line look at what’s to come in the final season. And the visit hinted at some big changes for the vampires — Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Colin Robinson (Mark Proskch), and The Guide (Kristen Schaal) — and their human friend and former familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén). As viewers will recall at the end of Season 5, Guillermo rejected his vampirism, opting to remain human, but forgo his servitude to...

What does Prime Video's "The Boys" and FX's "What We Do In The Shadows" have in common? Well, nothing immediate or obvious at all, as these respective shows dabble in distinctly different brands of genre subversion. While "The Boys" takes an irreverent, sharp, and satirical approach to the superhero genre, "What We Do In The Shadows" completely embraces vampire mythos while leaning hard into heartfelt charm and genuine hilarity. Neither show can be strictly considered horror, but do contain slivers of the genre, employed to lighthearted and gruesome extremes along the course of its seasons.
The only overlap between these two shows comes in the form of shared special effects teams who sometimes recycle props from one show and use them in the other. The practical and digital effects in "What We Do In The Shadows" mostly highlight (or evoke) something fantastical or supernatural, such as CG bats, invisible objects,...

“What We Do in the Shadows,” FX’s comedy series about vampires in Staten Island, is ending with Season 6, which…sucks. But this new trailer will get your blood pumping.
Vampire roommates Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) all return for the final season, along with their former familiar and current human friend, Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) and their vampire bureaucrat acquaintance, The Guide (Kristen Schaal). The new trailer gives fans a good look at a new character — the vampires’ other roommate, Jerry (“A.P. Bio” creator Mike O’Brien), who they forgot to wake up after he went down for a nap 50 years ago. His return forces Nandor, Laszlo, and Nadja to evaluate what they’ve been doing for the past half-century, and if they’re honest with themselves, things are not great. “Not one goal accomplished, not one dream pursued, not one part...

In the trailer for the upcoming sixth and final season of What We Do in the Shadows, Staten Island vampire roommates Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) are seen venturing out on their own journeys.
Even former familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), after his brief stint as a vampire in season five, has left the vampires’ residence for a new home.
Nadja, meanwhile, is shown working at an office, where she tells viewers, “Every day I am learning the dark arts of corporate America … Tgi, Fml, Ngl, Lol.”
Laszlo continues his scientific experiments as he sets out to achieve his goal of “bringing life to a lifeless vessel.”

When thinking back on all the costumes that she’s helped design for “What We Do in the Shadows,” Laura Montgomery has a pretty easy time pinpointing who she had the most fun designing costumes for. “I can’t lie. Nadja is my favorite. I mean, I love them all but she’s the only woman in the lead cast and we don’t get a ton of female day players either. So getting to play with beautiful fabrics and the cuts, it’s really that kind of 1890s period meets with 1980s that’s a really fun period to design,” she tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).
