UK’s Odeon Cinemas Expands Family Offer
In a bid to bolster its draw for families, the UK’s Odeon Cinemas is expanding the scope of its “adults pay kids prices” deal. The scheme will see admits for one adult and one child from as little as £10 for an Odeon Cinema and £15 for an Odeon Luxe throughout 2024. The AMC-owned chain says it’s making the investment into its family offerings as data has shown that affordability and convenience are the biggest concerns for families when considering activities, particularly over the summer holidays. With the opening weekend of Inside Out 2 marking Odeon’s busiest since National Cinema Day last September, turnstiles have been on fire. The UK gross for IO2 through Sunday stands at $40.2M while such titles with family appeal on deck include Despicable Me 4 on July 12 and Harold and the Purple Crayon on August 2. If you’re already experiencing The Last of Us withdrawals after the finale, let Screambox fill the post-apocalyptic void in your life with The Island.
Known internationally as Sløborn, the series combines elements of disaster thriller, coming-of-age drama, dystopian sci-fi, and survival horror. The German-Danish co-production was created by filmmaker Christian Alvart, who directed the genre films Pandorum, Case 39, and Antibodies before creating Netflix’s Dogs of Berlin.
It’s never been easy to be a teenager, but it’s particularly difficult for Gen Z, who are doomed to reckon with fears of the future — or lack thereof. As 15-year-old Evelin Kern (Emily Kusche) puts it in The Island‘s opening voice over, “Ever since I can remember, the world has been ending. Species extinction, deforestation, economic crises, environmental pollution, terrorism, and climate change. Happy days. Somewhere there is always the next crisis, the next war, and mankind has...

“Gun on set! Gun on set! Everyone, gun on set!”
It’s April, 2022 and we’re in Mmc Studios in Cologne for the shooting of European conspiracy thriller Operation Napoleon. It’s 5,000 miles and six months distant from the events of Oct. 2021 on the New Mexico set of Rust, when Alec Baldwin, discharged a live round from a revolver used as a prop gun killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. But the warning still chills.
Not that anyone here seems bothered.
Director Óskar Þór Axelsson is too busy setting up what will be the climax of Operation Napoleon: as a team of investigators prepare to board an old German World War II plane that has recently emerged from one of Iceland’s largest glaciers. The plane is at the center of the film, and the best-selling novel it’s based on, by Icelandic writer Arnaldur Indriðason.

Zdf Enterprises has boarded the second season of the coming-of-age, pandemic thriller “Sløborn” as co-producer and global distributor.
Season 1 of the ZDFneo original series dealt with the spread of a deadly virus across the world that ravaged the island of Sløborn, and the inhabitants’ fight to survive the catastrophe. In Season 2, audiences will experience the world after its collapse.
Shooting for the new season will take place in the spring of this year. Wotan Wilke Möhring, Emily Kusche, Alexander Scheer, Aaron Hilmer, Adrian Grünewald and Lea van Acken will once again star. Christian Alvart and Adolfo J. Kolmerer direct from a screenplay by Arend Remmers and Alvart.
In Season 2, the island has been evacuated after many residents died of the fatal pigeon flu. But a small group of people refused to be evacuated and hid on the island, for fear of being exposed to an even greater risk of infection on the mainland.

"You're not the only one. We're one big family." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a German comedy titled Freaks - You're One of Us, a film about ordinary people who discover they have special powers. What an original concept. Not to be confused with the other Freaks film, this one comes from Deutschland. What if for your entire life you had superpowers you weren’t aware of? Tipped by a mysterious tramp, a meek fry cook (or "young working class mom") discovers she has superpowers — and uncovers an unsavory, widespread conspiracy. Others also have powers that have been suppressed by a medication. But why? The film stars Cornelia Gröschel as Wendy, Wotan Wilke Möhring as Marek, and Tim Oliver Schultz as Elmar; Nina Kunzendorf, Frederic Linkemann, Finnlay Berger, Gisa Flake, Ralph Herforth, and Thelma Buabeng. This looks as painfully cheesy and as derivative as they come, nothing really to see here.

Just in time for Christmas comes the heartwarming story of “Perfume,” which follows a half-dozen friends so obsessed with the possibilities of smell that the death of one of them dredges up some extremely unpleasant things about their pasts.
The new series is based on the 1985 Patrick Süskind novel “Perfume,” which was previously adapted into the 2006 Tom Tykwer film “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer,” starring a pre-Bond Ben Whishaw, Alan Rickman, and Dustin Hoffman. This new TV venture brings the original story into a modern context, rather than the 18th-century French environs of the novel.
In updating the historical story, this six-part season also gets a detective show twist, with a group of investigators looking into the death of a singer. What they find is a group of one-time school friends, at least one of whom stumbled into the practice of using human scents as the basis for making a one-of-a-kind fragrance.

Peer (Ulrich Thomsen) and Timo (Wotan Wilke Möhring) formed a unique kinship in the 1980s for their mutual love for young girls. One day, after watching their daily dose of child pornography, Peer decides to capture a real live young girl for Timo as a special treat. Peer, however, loses control of himself and murders the girl instead -- as Timo stands by and observes. Riddled with guilt, Timo disappears. Jump forward 23 years -- a child's bicycle is discovered in a wheat field (in the exact location of the murder committed 23 years earlier by Peer). It is discovered that a young local girl, Sinikka (Anna Lena Klenke), is missing and the townspeople and local police (particularly the ones who were around 23 years ago) scramble for explanations. Was this a sick copycat murder? Otherwise, what would have prompted the murderer from 1986 to kill again?...

Chicago – Reminiscent of “The Vanishing” and “Memories of Murder,” Baran bo Odar’s “The Silence” is one of the most acclaimed international thrillers of the year. This excellent work focuses more on the people wrapped up in grief and sin than the mystery itself, and heralds the arrival of a great new talent. What I love so much about the Music Box Films Blu-ray release of the film is the way it highlights the talent of the man who made it, including two short films he produced before this full-length debut in their entirety.
Rating: 4.0/5.0

Chicago – With echoes of “The Vanishing” and “Memories of Murder,” Baran bo Odar’s dread-filled “The Silence” is a character-based thriller that focuses more on the people wrapped up in its web of perversion and murder than the crimes themselves. It’s an accomplished debut with a notable German cast that falters only a bit in terms of plotting and pacing but still heralds the arrival of a confident director who works well with both actors and visual composition. “The Silence” can be punishingly bleak and even depressing but it’s undeniably well-made and performed at the same time.

Two men – Peer (Ulrich Thomsen) and Timo (Wotan Wilke Mohring) – sit and watch a film in a darkened room. Timo’s stunned, ashamed reaction makes it clear that the film is not a happy one. They get in a car and drive off, passing a young girl named Pia on a bike.

Baran bo Odar directs this new crime thriller about a missing young girl, whose bicycle is discovered in the exact same spot where another girl died 23 years earlier. Is it a coincidence? Peer Sommer (Ulrich Thomsen) certainly seems to think so in this scene where the body is discovered.

Two men sit in a darkened living room watching an 8mm home movie play on a screen before them. It shows a young girl, terrified and sitting on a bed, while a man in a mask sits beside her and begins to unbutton his shirt. The two men head out into the sunshine of the day, driving aimlessly, until they see a young girl on a bike turn down an off-road path into the woods. They follow. It’s July 8th, 1986, and eleven year old Pia is raped and murdered by Peer (Ulrich Thomsen) while the second man, Timo (Wotan Wilke Möhring), watches with equal parts disgust and arousal. The two dispose of the body and return home, but before Peer’s car has been washed of any evidence Timo has packed and boarded a bus out of town. 23 years later, to the very day, another young girl goes missing with only her bike and bag left...

A retired investigator is called back onto the job in director Baran bo Odar's thriller The Silence, which follows two cases that have eerily similar connections. The story centers on a 13-year-old girl who goes missing in the same spot where, 23 years prior, a young girl was savagely murdered, a case that still remains unsolved. Krischan (Burghart Klaußner), the original investigator assigned to the case, comes out of retirement to try and unravel this bizarre mystery. Music Box Films has unveiled the first trailer and poster for this gripping nail-biter that will have you on the edge of your seat when it debuts in theaters March 8.

The Oscar-nominated short film Raju is something of an enigma. A German student film shot, not in a crew member's backyard, but in India, the film's small budget meant that, for director/co-writer Max Zähle, paying the cast wasn't an option—but he snagged two A-list German actors, Wotan Wilke Möhring and Julia Richter, to star all the same. And, of course, it's a student film that's been nominated for an Oscar... and that's not something that happens all too often.

The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn (PG)
(Steven Spielberg, 2011, Us/Nz) Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost. 107 mins.
If you forget Hergé's sacred source material and forgive the occasional creepiness of the animation, there's good fun to be had here. Guided by Spielberg's visual command, it's a boys' adventure with an Indiana Jones/Pirates Of The Caribbean rambunctiousness to it – a fast mix of dazzling action and comedy alcoholism that builds up so much momentum, it barely knows when to stop.
The Help (12A)
(Tate Taylor, 2011, Us) Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard. 146 mins.
The feelgood hit of the Us summer puts a cheery gloss on the civil rights era, as a Mississippi woman scandalously documents the woes of black maids.

What at first appears to be simple good-naturedness pervading Fatih Akin's "Soul Kitchen" starts to seem, as the film rolls on, like something crazier and more generous. The closest I can come to describing it is as a near-spiritual embrace of human failings, their inevitability and the fact that most of us still want to live together in great, messy communities anyway.
For instance: At one point, a character who's responsible for essentially ruining the life of our hero, genial Greek-German slacker Zinos Kazantsakis (Adam Bousdoukos), runs into Zinos' brother Illias (Moritz Bleibtreu, of "Run, Lola, Run") in jail, where Illias has been serving out a sentence for burglary. Instead of punching the guy, which seems, in context, not undeserved, Illias gives him a wink in greeting, and he responds by earnestly asking Illias to tell his brother hello. Illias says he will.
Such is life. And that sloppy,...

Ever since Alien was pitched as “a haunted house movie in space” 30 years ago, it seems like there have been more of those damned houses out amongst the stars than there have been on Earth. Genre fans (particularly those who have frequented the Sci Fi/Syfy channel) have long gotten used to the sight of interstellar travelers creeping/running down futuristic corridors in search of/away from some cosmic threat or other. Pandorum, produced by the team behind one of the bigger/gorier examples of the subgenre, Event Horizon, is a fairly successful attempt to do something a little different with the formula.
The opening scenes get the movie off to an effectively claustrophobic/mysterious start, as a young man suddenly awakens in a cryogenic sleep pod somewhere within the bowels of an expansive spacecraft (which we’re told at the start is the Elysium, on a colonization run to...

If horror is your bag then I’ve got just the thing for you. Two new clips have been released for Sci-fi horror, Pandorum.
Starring Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Wotan Wilke Möhring, André M. Hennicke, Antje Traue, Cam Gigandet, Norman Reedus and Asia Luna Mohmand, Pandorum seems to be a very visceral, “Event Horizon-esque” trip through space – just the ticket for a night at the movies!
The first clip comes courtesy of Bloody Disgusting, it features Ben Foster (3:10 To Yuma, 30 Days Of Night) and gives us our first real look at the beastie stalking the ship. The second clip hails from Shock Till You Drop and gives us another look at the big bad. Check them both out below:

Yesterday Empire brought us a brand new quad poster for the spooky sci-fi horror, Pandorum, starring Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Wotan Wilke Möhring, André M. Hennicke, Antje Traue, Cam Gigandet, Norman Reedus and Asia Luna Mohmand.
Two crewmen awaken from hyper-sleep aboard a spacecraft. None of their equipment is working, and their memories are incomplete. What was their mission? How much time has passed? Where are they? Who are they? As they try to piece things together, they discover they are not alone, and the ship’s new inhabitants – tribal warriors carrying crudely made weapons – are moving among them, intent on killing all aboard. As the space travelers unravel the frightening and deadly secrets the ship harbors, they realize the survival of mankind hinges on their actions. They must regain control of the ship before Pandorum takes over.
Pandorum is scheduled for UK release on 18th September 2009, check out the new poster below:

It’s the latest in poster technology — motion posters. It moves, it has sound, and it’s annoying. Okay, maybe not annoying, but definitely, well, I’m not sure if I’m ever going to get used to this new poster style. Maybe I’m just old school that way and think that posters just shouldn’t move. Or at least, make me all nervous and what have you. “Get off my lawn!” “Pandorum” stars Ben Foster, Dennis Quaid, Cam Gigandet, Antje Traue, Cung Le, Eddie Rouse, Norman Reedus, Wotan Wilke Möhring , Delphine Chuillot, and is directed by Christian Alvart. In a dramatic and highly physical opener, a Swat team swoops on wanted man Gabriel Engel. Captured after a reign of terror spanning more than six years and thirteen young male victims, it seems as though the cops finally have their man. Meanwhile, cop-cum-farmer, Michael Martens, is continuing to aggravate his townsfolk and further alienate himself by his obsession with the unsolved and brutal murder of a girl in his own village a year and a half ago. Will the capture of Engel bring closure for Martens, or will it in fact be just the beginning of a new and horrifying chapter? One thing’s for sure, Engel will shake Martens’ beliefs to their very foundations.
In one throwaway reference, Antibodies acknowledges the film to which it owes a considerable debt. Though Antibodies lacks the taught class of The Silence of the Lambs, and, indeed, much of the ‘horror,’ it...
