28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland finally reunited to make a sequel to their zombie movie classic. 28 Years Later, which is meant to launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels, reached theatres at the end of June, and the second chapter in the trilogy, 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, is scheduled to be released on January 16, 2026. Garland also wrote the screenplays for the sequels that will come after 28 Years Later. Boyle directed the first one, then passed the helm over to Candyman and The Marvels director Nia DaCosta for the sequel – and during an appearance at an Edinburgh International Film Festival event, DaCosta admitted that she asked Garland to write more of the infected into the script.

Nia DaCosta (Candyman) takes over as director for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, a sequel to Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later that will release in theaters on January 16, 2026.

The titular bone temple is a primary location in Danny Boyle’s trilogy-starter, and the title of DaCosta’s sequel suggests we’ll returning to that location. The final minutes of 28 Years Later also suggest that The Bone Temple will focus on Jack O’Connell’s “Sir Jimmy Crystal” and his merry band of evil-doers, with young hero Spike (Alfie Williams) also returning.

Cillian Murphy’s character from 28 Days Later is also expected to make an appearance in The Bone Temple, which we know very little about at this time. One other thing we do know is that Alex Garland wrote the script, and it was that script that brought DaCosta on board.

High-Rise was met modestly with a 60% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but fans were much harsher on the film, rating it a 38% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.

The movie tells the story of a headteacher who is in charge of a school for young men with societal and behavioral difficulties. Judging by the creatively edited and frenetically paced trailer, the premise is definitely as stressful as it sounds.
