Cillian Murphy has often spoken about how one film completely changed his approach to acting, and that movie was The Wind That Shakes the Barley. The actor returned to his home country to star as Damien O’Donovan, a young man who joins the Ira alongside his brother, in the acclaimed film directed by Ken Loach, one of Britain’s most celebrated social realist filmmakers.
Murphy’s performance was widely praised, with critics highlighting the depth he brought to a character torn between family loyalty and the call of justice. Every choice Damien makes carries weight, and Murphy conveyed that struggle with remarkable intensity.

Matt Smith is no stranger to big-budget blockbuster franchises, nor is he a stranger to villainous roles. However, despite recent rumors to the contrary, the actor is now outright stating that he will not be playing Voldemort in the upcoming Harry Potter HBO series.
While promoting his new film Caught Stealing, Smith was asked directly about this and clarified that he will not be playing Voldemort in the show. Seemingly surprised by the rumor, which made its rounds across social media this summer—alleging Smith and Cillian Murphy were both in the running for the role—Smith complimented the previous Voldemort before denying the question.

Jurassic World Rebirth Theory: Could InGen Be Hiding Behind Parker-Genix’s Dangerous Plans? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Jurassic World Rebirth steps away from the trilogy, yet the film carries traces of the larger franchise that could shape where the story goes next. The new characters bring their own energy to the story and hidden connections to earlier films keep the door open for sequels. While nothing has been confirmed yet, the amount of groundwork laid in this film feels far too deliberate to be ignored in the future.

Dreamworks is navigating through 2025 with a solid and strong lineup, thanks to big titles like Shrek, Madagascar, and other major hits. This year alone, audiences are getting new entries like Dog Man and How to Train Your Dragon, further proving the studio has no plans of slowing down. For years, it has leaned on its most successful franchises with new Kung Fu Panda, Boss Baby, and Puss in Boots chapters, while also taking chances on fresh stories. The Wild Robot and The Bad Guys showed how well those risks can pay off, standing out as some of the studio’s strongest original titles in recent memory.

For a long time, one of the best horror films of the 2000s was infamous for being hard to find. Physical media releases were out of print, and while other 2000s horror classics killed it on streaming, it went years without a digital release.
All that changed this year when a sequel landed, propelling an entire franchise back into the public eye. In 2025, you can rent this classic digitally, or you can just stream it for free, right now.
That’s right, 28 Days Later, the classic zombie film from director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, is on Pluto TV. And it’s not just available, but dominating. After weeks, it’s still the most popular movie on the platform right now, and with good reason.

Christopher Nolan’s movies usually boast a stacked star cast, with even supporting characters being played by A-listers. The upcoming The Odyssey not only has Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, and more in lead roles, but also has Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, and more in secondary roles.
The filmmaker has an eye for budding talents as well, as he has chosen actors who would go on to become A-listers for short roles in his movies. Timothée Chalamet played a young Tom Cooper, later played by Casey Affleck, in Interstellar, and Cillian Murphy had a recurring role as Jonathan Crane in The Dark Knight trilogy...

Cillian Murphy is everywhere these days. Hollywood can’t seem to get enough of him. He first caught the world’s attention as the sharp Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders. He turned brooding silences and piercing stares into something that made him an international obsession. Just when it seemed like that might be his defining role, along came Oppenheimer. An Oscar win later for his role in the movie, Murphy isn’t just admired; he’s being talked about as one of the very best of his generation.

Nia DaCosta might be stepping into a big spotlight once again helming the director’s chair for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, but she can’t seem to get over her Marvel flop. Speaking with THR, DaCosta thus looked back at her time directing Brie Larson’s 2023 film The Marvels, and got candid about the reason behind the film’s failure despite potential.
Making the ’28 Years Later’ sequel was one of the best filmmaking experiences I’ve had. One of the issues I had with ‘Candyman’ and ‘Marvels’ was the lack of a really solid script, which is always gonna just wreak havoc on the whole process.
The Marvels was supposed to be the big follow-up to Captain Marvel and also connect with Disney+ shows like WandaVision and Ms. Marvel. So, the gravity of the project, quite naturally, added immense pressure on Nia DaCosta. But the filmmaker openly pointed...

It’s been three years now since Peaky Blinders gave us a cliffhanging closure with Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby character, and left us still debating which villain came closest to breaking him. From rival gang leaders to political sharks, every foe forced Tommy to sharpen his game, and each season raised the stakes higher.
First aired in 2013 under creator Steven Knight’s vision, Peaky Blinders became a global hit for its gritty writing, razor-edged cinematography, and that iconic rock-heavy soundtrack. What truly made the show stick, though, was the fabulous cast- Murphy, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Sam Neill, each turning complex roles into pop culture staples.
In particular, Murphy’s performance transformed him into a global star, but none of that tension would have landed without unforgettable villains. So, here we have ranked the villains by just how close they came to beating the almighty Tommy Shelby.

28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland finally reunited to make a sequel to their zombie movie classic. 28 Years Later, which is meant to launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels, reached theatres at the end of June, and the second chapter in the trilogy, 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, is scheduled to be released on January 16, 2026. Garland also wrote the screenplays for the sequels that will come after 28 Years Later. Boyle directed the first one, then passed the helm over to Candyman and The Marvels director Nia DaCosta for the sequel – and during an appearance at an Edinburgh International Film Festival event, DaCosta admitted that she asked Garland to write more of the infected into the script.

The promise of the titular character being a perfect mix of brains and brawn keeps bringing the audience back to the screen. Nia DaCosta (Candyman) takes over as director for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, a sequel to Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later that will release in theaters on January 16, 2026.
The titular bone temple is a primary location in Danny Boyle’s trilogy-starter, and the title of DaCosta’s sequel suggests we’ll returning to that location. The final minutes of 28 Years Later also suggest that The Bone Temple will focus on Jack O’Connell’s “Sir Jimmy Crystal” and his merry band of evil-doers, with young hero Spike (Alfie Williams) also returning.
Cillian Murphy’s character from 28 Days Later is also expected to make an appearance in The Bone Temple, which we know very little about at this time. One other thing we do know is that Alex Garland wrote the script, and it was that script that brought DaCosta on board.

It isn’t easy to think of anyone other than Johnny Depp playing the iconic Tim Burton character Edward Scissorhands. Burton’s delightfully derranged recluse with bladed digits and a knack for trimming topiaries is an integral part of cinema for people within my age range (I’m 44), but did you know that Gary Oldman almost played the raven-haired Lothario? While speaking about his overarching career with The Hollywood Reporter, THR’s Scott Rozborogh asked Oldman about the time he nearly joined the cast of Burton’s 1990 dark fantasy fairytale.
“It would have been in the late ’80s,” Oldman said about when the Scissorhands role was on the table. “I was on Tim Burton’s list for the role of Edward Scissorhands. It was a small list. Tom Hiddleston will always be known for playing Loki in the MCU, but before he reprises that role in the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, one of his forgotten sci-fi thrillers has returned to streaming 10 years later. Hiddleston stars alongside Jeremy Irons (The Beekeeper) and Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) in High-Rise, the 2015 sci-fi comedy/drama following the residents of a tower block whose life begins to spiral out of control. High Rise is streaming on Hulu in America, but globally, the film recently became free to watch on Prime Video as part of a new 30-day free trial the streamer is running. High-Rise was met modestly with a 60% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but fans were much harsher on the film, rating it a 38% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.
It’s unclear what the budget of High-Rise is, but the film grossed only $4 million at the box office during extremely limited showings.

Leonardo DiCaprio Finally Teams Up With Paul Thomas Anderson After Regretting Boogie Nights Miss ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Which Actor Was Almost Cast As Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby In Peaky Blinders? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Cillian Murphy is Tommy Shelby. The brooding eyes, the sharp cheekbones, the unsettling calm before he unleashes chaos—he owns it. But here’s the wild part: he almost lost the role to Jason Statham. Yeah, that Jason Statham. Imagine Peaky Blinders with more punches and less psychological terror.
Director Steven Knight initially had his heart set on Statham. “I met them both in LA,” Knight spilled (via Esquire). “Jason is Jason. Cillian, when you meet him, isn’t Tommy.” Basically, Knight wasn’t sold on Murphy’s physicality. And honestly, even Murphy knew it. “There was a bit of convincing needed,” he later admitted (via The Guardian).

Ridley Scott has directed all manner of sci-fi and action projects over the years, but one of the more undersung projects from the acclaimed filmmaker just got a disappointing streaming update. 24 years ago, Scott directed Black Hawk Down, the 2001 war epic telling the story of the one hundred and sixty U.S. soldiers who were dropped into Mogadishu in 1993 to capture the two top lieutenants of a renegade warlord, only to find themselves in a battle against heavily-armed Somalis. Black Hawk Down has been streaming on Netflix for a few months now, but the streamer has confirmed that the last day to watch the film was August 1. The film earned strong scores of 76% from critics and 84% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $172 million against a $92 million budget.

Ahead of David Fincher and Brad Pitt‘s upcoming spin-off, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, Quentin Tarantino declared his support for the Fight Club director. In a lengthy 2-hour interview on The Church of Tarantino podcast, Qt revealed:
I think me and David Fincher are the 2 best directors. So the idea that he actually wants to adapt my work shows a level of seriousness towards my work.
The Adventures of Cliff Booth is set to be based on Brad Pitt’s Oscar-winning role in the 2019 film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Before this, there had never been a filmmaker or scriptwriter who boldly pursued a spin-off from Tarantino’s source material. As such, the news comes as a pleasant shock to both Fincher and Tarantino fanatics.
However, one can hardly agree with Tarantino on his proclamation of who the two best directors are in Hollywood. Let’s look at...

Ranking the Best Batman Movies Based on Their IMDb Ratings(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Before Martin Scorsese commented about superhero movies, the world had been divided about them ‘not being real cinema.’ A lot of people agreed with his statements, and a lot actively worked against them to prove him wrong. Regardless of what he said or what the world thought (or still feels) about superhero movies, no one can deny their influence on the film industry. And Gotham’s most considerable, darkest Vigilante is here to defend that status with his life.
Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight Trilogy” was ironically a cinematic masterpiece. It was the most significant turning point for superhero movies and a piece that redefined cinema forever. It garnered respect for a genre that was once not considered worthy of being called true cinema. One would expect nothing less from a series surrounding the Caped Crusader’s crusades.

The first test screening of the sequel was held last month, and World of Reel reports that some very positive buzz has come out of that screening.
Garland also wrote the screenplays for the sequels that will come after 28 Years Later. Boyle directed the first one, then passed the helm over to Candyman and The Marvels director Nia DaCosta for the sequel. Boyle might circle back to direct 28 Years Later Part III, but that one doesn’t have a full greenlight yet, and probably...

Despicable Me 2 Climbs Netflix Top 10, 12 Years After Theatrical Release(Photo Credit –YouTube)
Despicable Me 2 has significantly returned over a decade after it first hit theaters. The film, which helped push Illumination into the same league as Disney and Pixar, is now climbing Netflix’s charts. As of August 15, it holds the No. 8 spot among movies in the United States, per Flixpatrol.
Despicable Me 2 Was A Box Office Hit That Cemented Illumination’s Status
When the animated sequel premiered in 2013, it earned over $970 million worldwide, becoming Illumination’s top-grossing title. The first Despicable Me was already a solid success with $543 million, but the sequel proved the studio could compete at the highest level. Its box office total even outperformed every Walt Disney Animation Studios release since The Lion King ($771m) in 1994, though Frozen would later that same year take the crown with $1.2 billion.

Cillian Murphy, best known for his roles in Peaky Blinders, Inception, Red Eye, and the most recent role in Oppenheimer, once opened up about his intimate scenes with co-star Florence Pugh in Christopher Nolan’s movie.
The 48-year-old opened up to GQ about his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Manhattan Project physicist, in the biopic directed by Nolan. I think the relationship that he has with [Pugh’s character] Jean Tatlock is one of the most crucial emotional parts of the film. I think if they’re key to the story then they’re worthwhile.”

Since reaching the peak of acting Everest with his Academy Award winning performance in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, it's been fascinating to see what Cillian Murphy has done next. First up, there was Small Things Like These, a low-budget, independent Irish movie about the horrors of the Magdalene laundries in which. And now, before returning to the roles of Tommy Shelby in Steven Knight's upcoming Peaky Blinders movie and Jim in 28 Years Later sequel The Bone Temple, Murphy has immersed himself in another intense, small-scale character study: Steve. The Netflix bound movie, based on author Max Porter's Shy, is a mid-90s set drama in which Murphy plays — you guessed it! — Steve, headteacher of a struggling reformatory. Set over the course of a pivotal day for the school, Steve looks incredibly intense — and you can check out the trailer below;

Netflix has released the first official trailer for Cillian Murphy's next feature film, Steve. The movie tells the story of a headteacher who is in charge of a school for young men with societal and behavioral difficulties. Judging by the creatively edited and frenetically paced trailer, the premise is definitely as stressful as it sounds. After the resounding success of Oppenheimer, which won Best Picture and earned Murphy his first Best Actor trophy, the actor has returned to working on smaller projects, with Steve being his second film role since his performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Steve is based on the novella Shy, written by Max Porter, who also penned the screenplay for the movie, making it feel as faithful an adaptation as possible. However, whereas Shy is told from the perspective of a young student, Steve appears to be shifting the point of view to that of a teacher.

Cillian Murphy is channeling his inner Robin Williams in the trailer for his upcoming drama film Steve, which feels like a darker version of the latter’s Dead Poets Society. Directed by Tim Mielants, the movie is slated to premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival in the Platform Prize section and dropped a first trailer online (via Netflix/YouTube).

The teacher-savior movie is a sub-genre that’s not too often explored nowadays. Especially since it’s been kind of a punchline with its many tropes in a limited story range. The genre started out with titles like 1955’s Blackboard Jungle with Glenn Ford and Sidney Poitier. Since then, we have gotten films like Stand and Deliver, Lean On Me and Dangerous Minds. You know the drill; the movies where there’s an inner city school, occupied by unruly, slacker students — some even violent. Then, a new teacher or principal comes in and brings out their potential by inspiring them to turn their lives around. It’s a genre tailor-made for drama.
Netflix has now released the trailer for Steve, which showcases a more intense struggle to reach troubled youths. The plot synopsis reads, “Set in the mid-90s, Steve is a reimagining of Max Porter’s Sunday Times bestseller Shy.

The title “Shy” refers to a troubled youth at a reform school, played by Jay Lycurgo in the film. “You’re not alone, Shy,” Murphy’s character says. “That’s the whole point.” But as the retitling of the film to “Steve” suggests, the focus is very much now on Oscar winner Murphy’s headteacher and his ability to manage the many personalities inhabiting his school of last resort. “Steve” also features performances by Tracey Ullmann, Simbi Ajikawo, and Emily Watson and will world premiere at TIFF in September.
