Nathan Fillion Teases Mature Tone Of Lanterns - "Dropped More F-Bombs" Than Any Other Project
Image
As more details emerge about HBO's Lanterns, it sounds more and more like the TV series will be more of a John Stewart-centric show, despite the fact that Kyle Chandler is set to appear as Hal Jordan.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Nathan Fillion, who has a scene-stealing appearance as Guy Gardner in Superman, discussed his appearance on the show, revealing that he only has scenes with Aaron Pierre's John Stewart, not Hal.

"Aaron, he's got a voice like butter. And he's statuesque, like he's carved out of marble," Fillion told EW.

"He's very, very specific about his character and what his character's going through. His character's clearly going through something. And then along comes this gregarious, smug son of a bitch in Guy Gardner."

"And in that show...boy, Guy Gardner. I've dropped more F-bombs in that project than I have in, I think, my entire career put together,...

Lanterns Casting Details Reveal Surprising Plans To Explore Hal Jordan's Dcu History - Possible Spoilers
Image
DC Studios' approach to Lanterns has been interesting, to say the least. While it's hard to fault the decision to make John Stewart the Dcu's main Green Lantern, casting a 59-year-old Hal Jordan (and a 54-year-old Guy Gardner) wasn't something anyone saw coming.

Still, it means those characters have a built-in history in the Dcu, and Nexus Point News has today confirmed that Hal's past will be explored in the upcoming HBO Max TV series.

Lanterns has already cast younger and older versions of John's parents, as well as a child version of the character and his brother. That's led to speculation about a flashback episode for the hero, and the same may be in the works for Hal as his parents, Martin and Jessica Jordan, are also being cast.

According to the site, "Martin is described as handsome, confident, charming, but hides a deep sadness. Similar to the comics,...

'Lanterns' Director Reveals How "Intergalactic" The New Dcu Series Will Be
Image
Lanterns might finally give the Green Lanterns the live-action adaptation the comic book organization deserves. James Hawes (The Amateur) is directing the series, which is currently in production and is expected to be released sometime in early 2026, although this has not been confirmed. When the show was announced, Hawes drew comparisons between the Dcu's new series and HBO's timeless crime-thriller anthology, True Detective, among some other beloved series and movies. With Lanterns now shooting, and fans getting more and more excited to see what's in store from the show, Hawes has confirmed just how closely the Dcu series flies to HBO's hit show, and the major way it's different.

During a recent interview with the Phase Hero Podcast to promote his new action movie, The Amateur, James Hawes teased what fans can expect from Lanterns. Of course, he didn't give any plot details away, but the director confirmed the tone of the eagerly anticipated series,...

Lanterns Pilot Director James Hawes Says The Series Starts Off Grounded And Then Goes Cosmic
Image
Earlier reports about Lanterns being grounded may have been misconstrued by fans.

Recently, James Gunn tried to clarify those comments, and now, James Hawes, who directed the Lanterns pilot, is doing the same.

Hawes recently spoke to Phase Hero about the release of The Amateur but also touched on his work on the Dcu's upcoming Green Lantern drama.

"The scripts have so much with, so much character, it's a buddy cop movie, played out in a True Detective, Fargo, No Country For Old Men naturalistic [way] and then somebody flies," exclaimed the British television director.

Addressing previous reports and comments about the series being grounded and the assumption that everything is set on Earth, Hawes stated, "I'm going to talk very obliquely about this because there are excitements to come," teased Hawes.

"It won't disappoint the classic fans. I think it will invite in a whole new audience as well, " Hawes said.

Lanterns star Aaron Pierre will soon showcase his superhuman strength as Green Lantern in the anticipated DC Universe series. The devastating injury news came before learning the next month that he'd portray John Stewart's Green Lantern in Lanterns, with filming for the Max series beginning this past February. Pierre offered insight into his rigourous rehab in a video showcasing him lifting countless weights, chains and riding a bike as he locked into getting healthy before shooting for the series began.

HBO's Lanterns Will Wrap Filming In July Ahead Of Its Early-2026 Premiere
Image
The highly anticipated HBO series Lanterns is set to be a cosmic cornerstone of James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe (Dcu), offering a fresh, grounded take on the iconic Green Lantern mythology.

Unlike previous adaptations, this series is described as a detective story with a gritty, True Detective-esque tone. It will follow two legendary Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, as they unravel a dark, Earth-bound mystery.

The plot centers on a seemingly isolated murder in the American heartland, specifically Nebraska. This local crime will draw the veteran Green Lantern Corps member Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and his new recruit, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), into deeper, more sinister revelations.

The series, consisting of eight episodes, promises to connect this Earth-based investigation to the larger narrative of the Dcu's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

In a recent interview, actor J. Alphonse Nicholson, who portrays John Stewart's father in the upcoming space drama,...

'Superman' Star Nathan Fillion Teases Guy Garnder Role in HBO's 'Lanterns'
Image
With just a handful of projects in development, James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios have already displayed impressive levels of interconnectivity with their franchises. A vision of a possible future in the animated series Creature Commandos featured Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. The trailer for the second season of Peacemaker included an appearance by the Justice Gang that will debut in Superman. And finally, Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner is set to make an appearance on the HBO series Lanterns, with the actor having revealed how his character changes in between projects.

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Fillion talked about his role in Lanterns. The actor's involvement felt inevitable, given that he is also a Green Lantern. However, it wasn't until recently that Gunn confirmed Gardner would appear alongside Aaron Pierre's John Stewart and Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan. As Fillion told the magazine, Guy...

Lanterns Reportedly Adds Oscar-Nominated Love Actually Star - Is She Playing The Dcu's Carol Ferris?
Image
DC Studios has attracted some exciting talent for the Dcu, though it could do with a few more A-listers. Fortunately, Jeff Sneider is reporting today that Laura Linney has joined the cast of HBO Max's Lanterns.

The Love Actually star has been the recipient of many awards, including three Emmys and two Golden Globes. She's also received three Academy Award nominations.

Who is Linney playing? Sneider isn't sure. However, Kyle Chandler is 59 and Linney is 61; taking that into account, it would make sense for her to take on the role of Carol Ferris, the love of Hal Jordan's life and the superhero known as Star Sapphire. The reporter acknowledged that it's a possibility on The Hot Mic podcast.

We wouldn't be surprised if she's powerless in the Dcu, unless the Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Indigo and Violet, Black, White, and Ultraviolet Corps from across the emotional spectrum have existed for years.

Lanterns Production Photo Features New BTS Look At Aaron Pierre As John Stewart
Image
Aaron Pierre's stunt double on DC Studios and HBO's Lanterns series, Califf Guzman, has shared some new production stills, giving us a new glimpse of the Rebel Ridge star filming a scene from the pilot as Green Lantern John Stewart.

This isn't the clearest look at the Gl Corps rookie, who will join forces with more experiences ring-slinging hero Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) in the show, but with Lanterns set to premiere early next year, our next official image (or maybe even a teaser) shouldn't be too far off.

In a recent interview, director James Hawes commented on the series being compared to True Detective in various trade reports.

“It looks and feels rooted. You meet two guys, but there is wit and comedy to it that you would not expect in True Detective. It is, in many ways, a buddy cop structure with travel in the story time,...

Superman Director James Gunn Shares New Look At Ma & Pa Kent; Teases Lanterns' Sooner-Than-Expected Release
Image
DC Studios co-ceo and Superman writer/director James Gunn has capped off a busy week for the Dcu with a new look at Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as the Dcu's Jonathan and Martha Kent.

We got a better idea of what to expect from the Man of Tomorrow's human parents in the new trailer, and this shot shows them both in Kent Farm alongside Gunn.

On Threads, the filmmaker was asked about a possible timeline for the Dcu. He responded, "As of now it's basically as the movies and shows come out - although of course some of these feature flashbacks - Creature Commandos, Superman, Peacemaker, Lanterns, Supergirl."

This appears to confirm that Lanterns will premiere on HBO Max before Supergirl (which now appears to have lost its Woman of Tomorrow subtitle) lands in theaters next June. That means the Green Lantern reboot will hit streaming in the...

Lanterns director on how much the HBO series will be like True Detective
Image
Since its beginning, Lanterns has billed itself as a mystery series similar to True Detective. Speaking with THR, Lanterns director James Hawes believes those comparisons are valid, but adds that the Green Lantern series will have a little more humour.

“Talking tone, it looks and feels rooted. You meet two guys, but there is wit and comedy to it that you would not expect in True Detective,” Hawes said. “It is, in many ways, a buddy cop structure with travel in the story time, to and fro, that is really sophisticated. Chris Mundy has done the most amazing job with the team there, and so I think [the True Detective comparison] is valid. People will still go, ‘What were you talking about?’ to some extent, but I would also bring in No Country for Old Men, Fargo and things that have that Americana heart to them. There’s a wry humor, and so there...

This 'Green Lantern' series is more ‘True Detective’ than superhero showdown
Image
Hal Jordan and John Stewart trade outer space for rural Nebraska in this gritty new take.

I’ve never been a huge fan of superhero shows or movies. The costumes, the over-the-top battles, the save-the-world-again finales — it’s just never really been my thing. But that’s exactly why “Lanterns” has my attention. It’s not some big cosmic spectacle. It’s a grounded murder mystery set in small-town America, with two Green Lanterns trying to uncover something dark that’s been buried in the heartland. Think less flying through space, more “True Detective” with power rings. With a sharp creative team and ties to the new “Superman” movie, this feels like a totally different take on the genre. Here’s everything you need to know about “Lanterns.”

Everything you need to know about the ‘Lanterns’ TV series:

What is the ‘Lanterns’ TV series about?

Paget Brewster: I Begged My Agent to Get Me Into Shows Like ‘Criminal Minds’ Because “I Was Tired of Living in Hotels” All the Time
Image
Paget Brewster’s journey to becoming Emily Prentiss on Criminal Minds was a deliberate move toward stability. After years of bouncing between roles and living out of suitcases, Brewster reportedly urged her agent to find her a position on a long-running procedural. She was drawn to the idea of consistent work in one location, a stark contrast to the transient lifestyle she’d been leading.

Since joining Criminal Minds, Brewster has become a cornerstone of the series, with her character evolving from a team member to a leader. Her decision to seek out a role that offered both professional fulfillment and personal stability has clearly paid off, allowing her to build a lasting legacy on one of television’s most enduring crime dramas.

'Lanterns' Director Clarifies DC Series Comparison to 'True Detective'
Image
Director James Hawes delves into, and clarifies, the comparisons that have popped up between the upcoming DC series Lanterns and the hit HBO series True Detective. When James Gunn first announced his Dcu plan for what he called Chapter 1 - Gods and Monsters, he pitched Lanterns as being like True Detective. It certainly isn't hard to see where that comparison comes from, as Lanterns is being sold as a buddy cop series where the cops, here intergalactic police officers, investigate a mystery crime in the American heartland.

James Hawes, who serves as director for the first two episodes of Lanterns, dug into the tonal inspiration for the series while promoting his latest film, The Amateur. Hawes told The Hollywood Reporter that the series has some similarities to True Detective, but the series and characters have a bit more humor to them than True Detective. Hawes cited the work of the Coen brothers,...

James Hawes Talks ‘The Amateur’ Genre Swerve and the “Americana Heart” of ‘Lanterns’
Image
For two decades, James Hawes has quietly been one of the industry’s most accomplished television directors. He’s always exhibited a knack for genre storytelling, but season one of the Gary Oldman-led Slow Horses reaffirmed how he can effectively add an unexpected wrinkle to a well-trodden genre like the spy thriller. That prowess now extends to his second feature film, and first major studio film, The Amateur, starring Oscar winner Rami Malek.

The British filmmaker presents the elegant look and feel of a Jason Bourne or Jack Ryan movie, only he’s chronicling an underestimated CIA analyst character in Charlie Heller (Malek) who has no choice but go out into the field himself. Adapted by screenwriters Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli, Hawes’ reimagining of Robert Littell’s 1981 novel tracks Charlie’s defiant globe-trotting pursuit of the terrorists who killed his wife, Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan).

The updated take has...

Lanterns: Everything we know about the upcoming Dcu HBO series (gun-wielding John Stewart spotted on set)
Image
What Do We Know About the upcoming Dcu original series Lanterns? More thank you may think. The HBO series will be the first live-action project on television from James Gunn’s rebooted DC cinematic universe. With casting announcements, rumors, and more, we know a lot of what is to come. So, let’s jump in and discuss Lanterns.

We will see multiple Green Lanterns

While we met several members of the Green Lantern Corps in the Ryan Reynolds-led feature film, this new series is intentionally plural, as we will meet more than just Hal Jordan. According to James Gunn, Lanterns will center on Jon Stewart, who briefly appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League in a non-speaking role. We also know that James Gunn’s longtime friend and collaborator Nathan Fillion is portraying Lanterns hero Guy Gardner in the upcoming Superman movie and will potentially appear.

Kyle Chandler is Hal Jordan,...

Dcu 'Lanterns' Set Photos Showcase John Stewart Gunfight Action Scene
Image
James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios productions are going along smoothly. Besides Superman's presence at CinemaCon this week, which is in the editing process, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is currently filming, as it's also set to meet its June 2026 release date. Besides the feature films, the DC Universe is also steadily growing on the television front, with Peacemaker Season 2 in post-production and Creature Commandos Season 2 greenlit. However, one of the most exciting projects that just started filming is Lanterns, the HBO series centered around two Green Lanterns investigating a murder mystery on Earth. New set photos for the series have dropped, showing one of the stars in a precarious situation.

The DC Film news account on X posted photos taken by Ed Stanton, depicting Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) as John Stewart in the middle of an action sequence. Interestingly, rather than being in a Green Lantern uniform, the...

Lanterns Set Photos Show Aaron Pierre's (Powerless?) John Stewart In The Middle Of A Gunfight
Image
Lanterns is currently shooting in Atlanta, and while we've already had a first official look at the Dcu's Hal Jordan and John Stewart, the latter - portrayed by actor Aaron Pierre - has now been spotted on set.

Once again, his superhero costume is nowhere to be found. We can't even see John's Green Lantern Corps Power Ring, and his carrying a gun into battle suggests he might not have it for some reason.

Fans have wondered how Lanterns will portray these heroes, particularly on a television budget. HBO doesn't shy away from investing heavily in its offerings, but several episodes of CG-heavy Green Lantern action would soon add up; depowering Hal and John for a while might help.

While Lanterns has been described as a grounded story, Superman star, Nathan Fillion, has been confirmed to return as Guy Gardner.

"This is James Gunn. He's amazing, he's huge, he's world famous,...

'Lanterns' Cast Continues To Expand With a 'Walking Dead' Star
Image
HBO's Lanterns series is still ever-expanding after recently adding Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner into the fold. Per Deadline, Lawman: Bass Reeves star Chris Coy is now the latest addition to the upcoming Green Lantern drama series in a guest-starring role. He's set to embody a mysterious new character by the name of Waylon Sanders, described as "an intelligent survivor or a nervous truck driver." If that wasn't confusing enough, his real name and age remain an enigma, and he's said to be "unbound by the laws of nature." It's unclear what role he'll play and whether he'll be a friend or a foe to Lantern recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler).

Coy boards a group that has grown significantly in recent weeks, with Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jason Ritter among those on board thus far.

Nathon Fillion To Reprise Guy Gardner Role On ‘Lanterns’ DC Series
Image
“In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil’s might, beware my power, Green Lantern’s light.” These are words that Nathon Fillion’s Guy Gardner character will probably not say in DC Studios’ Green Lanterns superhero show “Lanterns,” but maybe his two comrades might. That’s right, Fillion, who has already shot his Green Lantern part in this summer’s “Superman” from director James Gunn, will also reprise that same role in the upcoming “Lanterns” series from showrunner Chris Mundy wrote the pilot with producers Damon Lindelof and Tom King.

Nathan Fillion Joins HBO and DC’s ‘Lanterns’ as Guy Gardner
Image
Nathan Fillion will appear as Guy Gardner (another Green Lantern) in the upcoming HBO-dc Studios series “Lanterns” following his appearance in James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” this summer, TheWrap has learned.

“Lanterns,” which is currently in production, stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. The drama, which was given a straight-to-series order last June, is based on the DC comic “Green Lantern” and follows the two intergalactic cops as they are drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery to investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Gunn, who is now in charge of the new DC Universe slate of films and TV shows along with Peter Safran, had previously teased “a few other lanterns” would be added to the series. Lanterns was picked up last year from Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, Lost) and comics writer Tom King. The trio are co-writing and executive producing the series, with Mundy serving as showrunner.

Lanterns: Nathan Fillion will return as Guy Gardner in HBO series

It was only a matter of time before another member of the Green Lantern Corps joined Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) and Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) in HBO’s upcoming DC series. It’s been announced that Nathan Fillion will reprise the role of Guy Gardner in Lanterns. The character will introduce himself in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie.

The series follows Hal Jordan (Chandler) and John Stewart (Pierre), “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.“

Fillion recently teased a little about his character. “He’s a jerk! What’s important to know is, you don’t have to be good to be a Green Lantern; you just have to be fearless,” he said. “So Guy Gardner is fearless, and he is not very good. He’s not nice, which is very freeing as an actor because you just think to yourself,...

‘Lanterns’ HBO Series Adds Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner
Image
HBO’s upcoming DC series “Lanterns” has added Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, one of multiple Green Lanterns in the cast.

This will be far from Fillion’s first time playing a Lantern. He debuted as one of DC’s green heroes in the 2011 animated film “Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.” In it, he was the voice actor for Hal Jordan, one of many members of the Green Lantern Corps. He played the role again in 2012’s “Justice League: Doom,” 2013’s “Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox,” 2015’s “Justice League: Throne of Atlantis,” 2018’s “The Death of Superman” and 2019’s “Reign of the Supermen.” Each of the animated films was a straight-to-dvd release.

In 2023, he was cast as a Green Lantern in James Gunn’s live-action film “Superman,” but as Gardner instead of Jordan. The film opens in theaters via Warner Bros. this July.

“Lanterns” stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.

Lanterns Director Teases Humor And Promises The Show "Doesn't Lack Its Sci-Fi Magic" Despite Grounded Setting
Image
Cameras are currently rolling on Lanterns, and Slow Horses' James Hawes has been tapped to helm the first two episodes.

Those will set the tone for Green Lantern's corner of the Dcu, and thanks to Ryan Reynolds frequently reminding people how bad the 2011 movie was, they'll also be vital in convincing people to give the Corps another chance.

Hawes has an impressive list of credits to his name; as well as directing the Rami Malek-led The Amateur, he's previously worked on shows like Snowpiercer, The Alienist, Black Mirror, and Raised by Wolves.

Discussing his vision for Lanterns with Collider, Hawes said, "There is a very particular humor that they brought to this. It's very rooted in a way that I like to think we achieve with Slow Horses, that I achieve with things like my Black Mirror's, and yet there is a rich vein of humor running through it.

'Matlock's Jason Ritter Responds to Season 2 Exit Rumors Amid 'Lanterns' Casting
Image
Julian (Jason Ritter) might be one of Matty's (Kathy Bates) suspects, but Ritter is not leaving Matlock if his character is the culprit. The actor has changed his appearance lately as he grew his mustache, which Julian does not have. This led to fan speculation that he wouldn't return for Season 2 of the hit CBS series. Ritter addressed these rumors in an interview with TV Insider at PaleyFest. He said the mustache was for another show he's been cast in recently. "[My mustache is] for another show that I’m working on called Lanterns,” Ritter told the outlet, chuckling. “Mustaches can be shaved off. As soon as I’m done, I’m back to Matlock.”

Ritter joined the new DC Universe series, Lanterns, playing Billie Macon, a character described as someone who works for his powerful father. Macon is Sheriff Kerry's (Kelly MacDonald) husband. The series "follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre...

Dcu's 'Lanterns' Casts 'Stranger Things' and NFL Star Sherman Augustus
Image
Stranger Things's Sherman Augustus is leaving the Midwest and heading to the DC Universe. The veteran actor and former NFL player recently joined the cast of Dcu's Lanterns, and is set to portray John Senior, the father of Aaron Pierre's character, John Stewart. John Senior is said to be the sort of parent who holds onto the past and is the definition of stubborn. His role will also be recurring, so viewers will see him often throughout the upcoming HBO drama series based on the DC Green Lantern comic. Augustus joins the show's stars, Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler (who will play Hal Jordan), and Kelly MacDonald, who signed on as the series' regular character Kerry (a sheriff who takes her job very seriously).

A team-up that involves a veteran and their new recruit will always be dramatic and action-packed with a splash of humor here and there.

Stranger Things star set to join DC Universe in upcoming new HBO show
Image
Before Sherman Augustus became known as Lt. Col. Jack Sullivan in the Netflix smash series Stranger Things or Nathaniel Moon in the woefully underrated dystopian AMC series Into the Badlands, he had aspirations to be in the NFL. In 1984, he was on pace as he played with the Minnesota Vikings and San Diego Chargers until a horrendous knee injury sidelined him for good.

To be an actor, one should be able to channel feelings deep within one's psyche. There's something almost superhuman about that, which is fitting because now he will be the father of one: Green Lantern John Stewart, in DC Studios' and HBO's much-anticipated series Lanterns.

Based on casting news, it's clear that Lanterns will delve into origins in several phases. Sherman Augustus will play John Stewart, Sr., but so will J. Alphonse Nicholson, at a much younger age. The Deadline article shared Augustus will play Stewart's...

Lanterns Adds P-valley Star J. Alphonse Nicholson As Green Lantern John Stewart's Father
Image
Production is underway on Lanterns and P-Valley star J. Alphonse Nicholson is the latest addition to the show's cast. According to Deadline, he will play the father of Aaron Pierre's John Stewart.

However, it sounds like his scenes will primarily be flashbacks as the trade notes, "Nicholson will play the young version of John Senior." This comes shortly after we learned Nicole Ari Parker has been tapped to star as the Green Lantern's mother.

While Hal Jordan will also take centre stage in Lanterns, it's not surprising to learn that we'll explore John's background as he's expected to be the Dcu's main Green Lantern moving beyond this Max series.

Nicholson's other screen credits include Just Mercy, They Cloned Tyrone, Mr. Robot, Luke Cage, and Clipped. He reacted to his casting on social media and expressed gratitude for landing the role.
