Fabian Stumm won the €30,000 best director prize for Sad Jokes at this year’s edition of the German Cinema New Talent Awards, presented at the Munich International Film Festival.

Stumm’s second film is a musing on the inherent comedy of the human condition, and stars Stumm himself, with Haley Louise Jones.

The jury of Mariko Minoguchi, Denis Moschitto, and Florian Koerner von Gustorf described the film as: “A focused look at the absurdities and vicissitudes of life, which can be harsh and abrasive, then simply unreal, and ultimately beautifully poetic.”

Sad Jokes will be released in Germany on September 12 by Salzgeber & Co.

New films by rising German directors Natja Brunckhorst, Fabian Stumm and Frédéric Jaeger are among the nominees for this year’s German Cinema New Talent Award, which will hand out prizes to the best director, producer, writer and actor.

It is open to all directors, producers, screenwriters, and actors whose first, second or third features have been selected for Munich International Film Festival’s (Miff) New German Cinema section.

Beta Cinema is launching international sales in Cannes for director Fatih Akin’s upcoming film “Amrum,” which starts shooting in Hamburg Monday. The film stars Jasper Billerbeck, Laura Tonke and Diane Kruger.

“Amrum” will be released in German theaters in September 2025, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

It is set on the island of Amrum in spring 1945. Seal hunting, fishing at night, toiling in the fields – nothing is too dangerous or too arduous for 12-year-old Nanning to help his mother feed the family in the final days of World War II. Publishing exec will take over from Petra Müller on January 1, 2024

Walid Nakschbandi is to succeed Petra Müller as CEO of one of the leading German regional film funds, Film- und Medienstiftung Nrw, from January 1, 2024.

Afghan-born Nakschbandi, who settled in Germany at the age of 14, studied political science and law in Bonn and Berlin. He joined the Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group in 1996 and ran the group’s TV production arm Ave Gesellschaft für Fernsehproduktion GmbH from 1999.

New feature films by Asli Özge, Maximilian Erlenwein and Henrika Kull are among 15 titles premiering in the New German Cinema sidebar at the Filmfest München’s 40th anniversary edition (June 23 - July 1).

German sales agent Patra Spanou Film is to introduce veteran German filmmaker Volker Schlöndorff’s first feature documentary, The Forest Maker, to international buyers at the Cannes market next week.

The completed documentary focuses on the Australian agronomist Tony Rinaudo who has lived and worked in Africa for several decades. There he has discovered and put in practice a solution to the extreme deforestation and desertification of the Sahel region.

A major presale has been signed for “Bella Germania,” and fittingly for a sweeping tale of Italian immigrants in Germany, it has been picked up by Rai. The Italian pubcaster will play it on its flagship free-tv station Rai Uno and is expected to launch it this summer.

Chicago – In one of the more truthful and contemporary films of 2017, “In the Fade” is a German/French production about the fallout due to a terrorist act. What it also emphasizes is the generated hatred, frustration and waste of such acts, and its textual story is stunning and distressing.

Diane Kruger portrays the victim of terrorism in the film. She is an international actor who has appeared in American films (“Inglourious Basterds,” “National Treasure”) and completely owns the tenor of what happens in this period of her character’s life. It is a classic collaboration between her and the director/co-writer Fatih Akin, running through a horrid laundry list of dreaded emotional reactions, while also expressing the toughness and need-for-help that is necessary to survive. As a statement about terrorism, it is an ultimate one in a sense, as to where we will all end up if it continues.

There’s been a very low, but noticeable simmer of awards season talk surrounding “In The Fade.” The latest from director Fatih Akin features Diane Kruger in the lead role, and by all accounts, she gives a ferocious turn in a drama that’s eerily timely.

Co-starring Denis Moschitto, Numan Acar and Johannes Krisch, the story follows a woman who becomes widowed after her husband and son are killed in a bombing plotted by a young, neo-Nazi couple.

Awards run, early 2018 theatrical release planned.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to Faith Akin’s revenge drama In the Fade starring Cannes best actress winner Diane Kruger.

The film will navigate an awards-qualifying run this autumn ahead of a theatrical release in early 2018.

Kruger plays a German mother seeking revenge for the murder of her family at the hands of Neo-Nazis. Denis Moschitto, Johannes Krisch, Ulrich Tukur, Samia Chancrin, and Numan Acar also star.

“In the Fade is my own reflection of current developments in the world,” Akin, who wrote and directed, said. “On different layers it is a very personal film for me. I am honored that Magnolia will bring the movie to American audiences and I am very excited about this.” Hark Bohm co-wrote the screenplay.

Fatih Akin has had a directorial trajectory that oscillates between the compelling and raw Head-On to the less successful Armenian genocide movie The Cut via the joys of Soul Kitchen. In the Fade sees Akin in his native Hamburg tackling racism and the burgeoning far right extremism.

The film opens with Nuri Sekerci (Numan Acar), wearing a white suit and black shirt reminiscent of Tony Manero, is heading out of his prison cell and into marriage with Katja (Diane Kruger). The jostling and joshing inmates cheering him on his way is a joy. From here we jump ahead a few years and see the two happily ensconced in a beautiful home with a lovely six-year-old son Rocco. Nuri has a legitimate business and Katja is a stay-at-home mum. But when a bomb explodes and kills her family, we wonder how legitimate Nuri was and where all the money came from.

The Berlin International Film Festival announced 13 additions to its 2017 line-up, including the international premiere of Danny Boyle’s hotly anticipated “Trainspotting” follow-up, “Trainspotting: T2,” and the world premiere of James Mangold’s “Logan,” the third in the growing “Wolverine” franchise, starring Hugh Jackman. Both films will play out of competition.

A further 13 films have been invited to screen in the Competition and Berlinale Special section at the 67th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival.

The festival has added commercial clout to its Out Of Competition lineup in the shape of Danny Boyle’s T2 Trainspotting and X-Men spinoff Logan.

There are also competition berths for new films by Hong Sangsoo, Thomas Arslan, Volker Schlöndorff, Sabu, Álex de la Iglesia and Josef Hader.

Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha’s latest, Viceroy’s House, will have its world premiere out of competition at the festival. Starring Hugh Bonneville alongside Gillian Anderson, the period drama set in 1947 India depicts Lord Mountbatten, the man charged with handing India back to its people.

Four producers on Stephen Hopkins’ Jesse Owens biopic Race have joined forces to produce English-language features in the future for the international market.

Jean-Charles Lévy, sports entrepreneur Luc Dayan, Karsten Brünig and Thierry Potok are partners in the Berlin-based production house Trinity Race GmbH, which has served as the German producer on Race.

The film wraps principal photography in the German capital’s historic Olympic Stadium on Sunday. Stephan James plays Owens.

Trinity’s partners on the $31.6m German-Canadian co-production are Lévy’s Forecast Pictures, Dayan’s ID+, Kate Garwood and Hopkins’ Totally Commercial Films, and Canadian producers Louis-Philippe Rochon and Dominique Séguin of Solofilms.

David Garrett’s Mister Smith Entertainment is handling international distribution and now only has sales deal pending for Japan, France and the UK. Square One Entertainment will distribute theatrically in Germany and eOne in Canada. Focus Features will release the film in the Us.

Because of some classified evidence, the government appoints an additional defense attorney, Claudia Simmons-Howe (Rebecca Hall), who's prohibited from talking to Erdogan or his lawyer. One problem: Claudia and Martin just happen to be ex-lovers, and that's out of order, Your Honor! Can these two keep their gavel banging a secret? Will their guilty-pleasure behavior make...

Closed Circuit is being billed as the new Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and though I disagree in the long run with that comparison I see what they mean. Closed Circuit seeks to wrap the audience around a web of political intrigue and espionage amongst a drab and dreary British setting with characters who may or may not be what they seem, yet where Tinker was a stoical ode to the analog 70s spy game this film tries to melodramatically incorporate the omniscient eye of CCTV for the self-evident conclusion that we’re always being watched. It’s Le Carre-lite, and doesn’t have one iota of the subtlety or adeptness of Tomas Alfedson’s 2011 adaptation of Tinker. Instead, Closed Circuit is an exposition-heavy boilerplate thriller with some interesting casting choices whose main success is being able to make the tangles of the British legal system somewhat interesting.

There’s considerable promise at the beginning of Closed Circuit, employing a sort of Mike Figgis cam of multiple frames, collapsed in a violent explosion that unites all angles in death. But quickly, John Crowley’s fast paced tale meant more as a criticism of Britain’s judicial system as an enemy unto itself rather than as a treatise on acts of terrorism, begins establishing ridiculous plot developments that recalls those pulpy John Grisham adaptations of the 90s replete with romantically involved lead characters.

Only one of the responsible members of the terrorist cell is apprehended, Farroukh Erdogan (Denis Moschitto), along with his wife and teenage son. If you like the courtroom dramas of John Grisham or the espionage of John LeCarre, you may dig the new political thriller Closed Circuit. It begins with a bang – during the opening credits, the screen is broken into an increasing number of closed circuit camera displays trained on an outdoor London marketplace. A truck explodes killing 120 people. One member of the suspected terrorist cell survives: Farroukh Erdogan (Denis Moschitto), who’s promptly arrested and jailed. Preparations begin for the trial but there’s a hitch: the government will use classified evidence to prosecute Erdogan, evidence so super top secret that neither he nor his lawyers can be allowed to see it. Chicago – The threat of terrorist acts defies security. That is a fundamental truth. With 7 billion people on the planet – and an infinite number of motivations within them – all the security cameras, techniques and agencies cannot stop a determined group or individual, as depicted in “Closed Circuit.”

The film presents a fictional terrorist scenario in London – a market bombing – and dissects it through the legal defense team that will try to determine their client’s connection to the crime. The complex story uncovers a web of deceit and cover-up, and the British government is involved. But basically the film speaks to power – the power of determination over bureaucracy, the power of secrets over truth and the power of a societal structure that allows governmental agencies to freely spend and develop terrorist preventatives that ultimately are just cover-thy-butt procedures.

Percolating without ever boiling over, Closed Circuit is a British conspiracy drama that's content to serve a cup of room-temperature tea, sit back, and shake its head with mild disapproval. What a pity, eh? The title refers to the closed circuit cameras that blanket London, and the efficient direction by John Crowley (Intermission, Boy A) makes constant reference to them and the unseen observers who are always watching. The original screenplay by Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises) feels ripped from the headlines: 140 people are killed when a bomb explodes in a busy market. While we all hear the title Closed Circuit and hope it means that we’re finally getting a Short Circuit threequel, alas we’re not. Nope, Johnny 5 won’t be taking on terrorists in this upcoming thriller from director John Crawley.
