Princess Diana once revealed that King Charles was disappointed when Prince Harry was born because he had hoped for a daughter.
Princess Diana Kept The Gender Of Their Second Child A Secret
The couple already had Prince William, who was born in June 1982, and he was set to be his heir to the throne. When Harry was born, Charles wasn’t shy about making his displeasure known.
Charles’s first comment upon seeing Harry after his birth in September 1984 was said to have been, “Oh, God, it’s a boy,” and he added, “And he’s even got red hair.”
Princess Diana first shared this shocking tidbit with her biographer, Andrew Morton, who wrote the book “Diana: Her True Story,” published in 1992.
“Charles always wanted a girl. He wanted two children, and he wanted a girl,”
The then Princess of Wales admitted.

King George V passed away eighty- nine years ago today, on January 20, 1936. Queen Elizabeth II’s grandfather was monarch for twenty-six years after significantly modernizing the monarchy.
King George V Made An Enormous Impact On The History Of The Royal Family
The King changed the royal family’s name to Windsor, which was applied not only to the name of the “House” or “dynasty” but also became their official surname.
George V also started the annual Christmas radio broadcast tradition and made the monarchy more accessible to the public and working class. He navigated Britain through the First World War. As King, he accomplished a great deal.
His importance to the history of the monarchy is part of why the circumstances of his death have been closely examined, and claims were made fifty years following his passing.

King Charles and Princess Kate’s 2024 annus horribilis may have surpassed the Queen’s 1992 fiasco. Queen Elizabeth II had a year from hell.
1992 Was The Queen’s “Annus Horribilis”
Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, and Princess Anne all got divorced, and scandals rocked the royal family. Also, a devastating fire destroyed part of Windsor Castle, and the public turned against the royals.
Royal author Andrew Morton wrote the book Diana: Her True Story,” which divulged Charles’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.
The scandals were tabloid fodder and brought negative publicity to the monarchy. Four days after the fire at the castle, the Queen gave her famous “annus horribilis speech.”
The Queen never referred to her family personally, but what she talked about was obvious.
She started,
“1992 is not a year on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure.”
The Queen continued,

When Prince Harry first dated Meghan Markle, he wanted to introduce his family to her acting work. He played an edited version of “Suits” for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip.
The Queen Encouraged Meghan To Continue Her Acting Career
Meghan played paralegal Rachel Zane in the popular legal drama and departed the show when her relationship with Harry became serious.
Harry had hoped that seeing Meghan in action would “help them understand more clearly what their grandson saw in her,” explained royal biographer Andrew Morton, who wrote the book, “Meghan: A Hollywood Princess.”
Morton said that Meghan quickly became a “sensation,” suddenly, everyone wanted to know more about the woman who captured Prince Harry’s heart and would later become the next royal bride.
In 2017, Meghan was invited to Christmas at Sandringham, as the Queen broke royal tradition that only spouses married to royals would be invited.

The royal family has their annual Christmas at Sandringham, which has been a long-held tradition started by Queen Elizabeth II. There have been many Christmases when royal rows ensued, as well as some surprises.
Princess Diana Loathed Christmas At Sandringham
Princess Diana famously loathed Christmas at Sandringham ever since her first experience at the Norfolk estate for the holidays.
Christmas 1980 wasn’t so merry for Diana when she generously purchased cashmere sweaters and other thoughtful gifts for the royals. She was pregnant with Prince William at the time but still took the time to gather presents for everyone.
She gave Princess Anne a beautiful sweater, and in return, she received a toilet paper holder. Diana was not amused. The royal family gives each other gag gifts for Christmas, and the funnier, the better, but Diana didn’t like it.

Prince Harry did not hold back on the name calling in his book ‘Spare,’ but perhaps the most damaging accusation he made towards his stepmother Queen Camilla is that he and King Charles threw him to the press in the bid to improve their press image.
He may have wanted to deliver a backhanded slap, but an expert is convinced that it hurt his reputation as much as it hurt Camilla’s.
Prince Harry Forced Country To Take Sides With “Incendiary Comments”
At present, Prince Harry refuses to let go of his lawsuit against certain UK newspaper publishers, and he’s ready to drag his family down if it means he comes out victorious. This, of course, has created a sort of controversial image for the 40-year-old.
In a new Channel 4 documentary, a panel of experts dismissed the Prince’s claims that he’s been hacked.

In other words, Tina Brown talks, the royals tend to listen. And they’re probably very much enjoying her recent takedown of Meghan and Prince Harry.

Casting director Robert Sterne has been with Netflix’s hit drama “The Crown” for all six seasons — and even though the show has concluded, he continues to be asked about acting opportunities. “I still get letters saying, ‘Please, can I be Meghan Markle?’” he says. “And I think, ‘Well, the moment’s gone.’”
While the acclaimed program just concluded, the journey began nine years ago for Sterne. “It started with us sitting around a table talking about it, and now here we are,” says the U.K.-based CD who worked closely with series creator Peter Morgan throughout. “We were discussing how it was going to work, the idea of casting it again every two years. I think it was better than using ever-increasing layers of makeup. It was, in many ways, an experiment.”

Humphrey Bogart is practically the face of film noir. While not quite a genre, the very flexible film movement reflected America's malaise following the Great Depression and eventually World War II. There was a grimness and heightened sense of realism to the movies, often made on lower budgets and with a documentary intensity. Even when the movies ended happily, as many did, the feelings unearthed in the telling of the story would be left unresolved to gnaw at viewers indefinitely.
Bogart, the Broadway actor turned B-movie character actor turned one of the biggest stars in the world, fit the mood perfectly. His scars and trademark lisp separated him from his more conventionally beautiful peers and gave him a natural feel for the hardboiled material. His way with dialogue — spat out with ferocity or tenderness — colored the films as well. His cinematic stature, helped by his refusal to do television, also...

When Andrew Morton’s much-divisive bestseller, Diana: Her True Story, hit bookshelves in 1992, most people, excluding those afflicted by a rather rare case of reasonable doubt and a penchant for hearing two sides of the story, wrote it off as a pathos-packed money-grabber. And, since the unanimous verdict of the world at large, more often than not, is seen as the word, Diana’s tumultuous story – a story that she reportedly had a hand in bringing to life on paper – sadly remained only an entertaining piece of fiction, with maybe some facts thrown into the well-crafted picture sporadically as a way of making the work seem credible.

The Crown season 5 introduces James Colthurst as the middleman between Princess Diana and Andrew Morton during the process of writing the book Diana: Her True Story. What the show does not include is the long history of friendship that James Colthurst and Diana shared, beginning in adolescence and continuing through Colthurst's recollections. More than just a deliveryman for the tapes that helped shape Morton's book, James Colthurst was an emotional pillar for Diana through the worst of her marriage, and influenced her philanthropic efforts with educating the public on HIV.
James Colthurst, himself the son of a Baronet, shared mutual friends with Princess Diana (then the daughter of a Viscount) since youth. Although he only appears briefly in one episode of The Crown, he was a major force in encouraging Diana to speak her side of the story and eventually leave her unhappy marriage with Charles. The storylines in the fifth season of The Crown have provoked much backlash, from scenes showing the former Prince Charles trying to force the Queen’s abdication to others suggesting Prince Philip was unfaithful to the late monarch.
Prominent figures, including Judi Dench, have demanded that the drama carry a disclaimer to make clear that the events of the series aren’t entirely factual. While The Crown actor Jonathan Pryce, has called these reactions to the show “hugely disappointing”, claiming that viewers know it’s a drama, not a documentary.
Some of the storylines in season five are pretty close to the truth. Others, not so much.

Warning: contains spoilers for The Crown season 5.
The Crown and historical accuracy enjoy a fleeting rather than steadfast acquaintance. Peter Morgan’s Netflix drama concertinas history and jumps between time periods to follow emotional and symbolic through-lines rather than sticking to the recorded facts and timelines. “Inspired by real events, this fictional dramatization…” goes the proviso at the top of Season Five. School pupils shouldn’t rely on it to do their history homework, is the general consensus.
That established, below is the timeline of the 1991 – 1997 period depicted in Season Five according to the TV drama, with the odd note on where episodes diverge from what we know to be the real-life sequence of events.
As a reminder, Season four covered ‘The Thatcher Years’, running from Margaret Thatcher’s election as prime minister of Great Britain in May 1979 to her resignation as leader of the Conservative Party in November 1990, after...

Amid allegations that “The Crown” Season 5 is “exploitative” of the royal family, Princess Diana biographer Andrew Morton stands by the conspiracy theories presented in the tense season, which shows the divorce of Diana and then-Prince Charles.
“The Crown’ shows the sense of unnamed and anonymous watchers and it’s absolutely true,” Morton told The Daily Beast. “There is no need for [creator] Peter Morgan to make anything up.”
In fact, the series is so accurate that Morton found Elizabeth Debicki, who plays the ill-fated Princess Diana, to be “unnerving.?
“I was blown away by how authentic Elizabeth Debicki was in her portrayal of Diana,” Morton, who wrote the biography “Diana: Her True Story,” said. “It was like being back in the room with her 30 years ago. It was unnerving. It was like being with a ghost. It spoke to me very clearly.”

Warning: Contains spoilers for The Crown season 5.
The Crown season 5 depicts Princess Diana’s paranoia that her phone has been bugged and she’s being spied on. Throughout the season 5, Diana fears that her phone calls are being listened to, and this eventually comes to a head in episodes 7 and 8, when Martin Bashir preys on the Princess of Wales’ worries to help secure her infamous Panorama interview. Although the storyline added lots of intrigue to The Crown season 5, the series sometimes strays from the facts leaving it unclear whether Diana's phone was really bugged.
The depictions of Diana’s paranoia about her phone being bugged in The Crown season 5 do have a basis in reality. There is evidence that Diana’s phone calls were recorded at least once, and some have suggested that her phone being bugged was a real fear of the Princess of Wales towards the end of her life.

"The Crown" season five covers some of the royal family's biggest headline-making moments from the 1990s, including Andrew Morton's Princess Diana memoir, Prince Charles's BBC interview, Diana and Charles's divorce, and more. But episode two features a death that most people probably didn't know anything about, though it has major repercussions for the rest of the season.

Warning: Spoilers for The Crown Season 5 Finale - "Decommissioned"
The ending of The Crown season 5 centers on Queen Elizabeth II's (Imelda Staunton) dramatic feelings of obsolescence while Prince Charles (Dominic West) fruitlessly campaigns for greater stature as the future King and the tragic fate of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) hangs in the air. The rest of the Royal Family shifted to the background as their stories wrapped up in The Crown season 5, but Mohamed Al Fayed (Salim Daw) and Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla) took center stage in the finale.

Royal biographer Andrew Morton has praised Elizabeth Debicki’s performance as Princess Diana in The Crown season five.
The Netflix series returned on Wednesday (9 November) with a new season and a new cast.
You can follow updates from The Independent’s live blog here.
Princess Diana, who was first introduced in season four played by Emma Corrin, is now being portrayed by Australian actor Debicki.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday (9 November), writer Morton, who worked with Diana on his 1992 book Diana: Her True Story, said that Debicki reminded him of the royal he had known.
“I don’t say this slightly but that performance really conveys the Diana I got to know for a couple of years in the early 1990s,” he said.
“I was struck just watching the episode about how the paper I typed the book on was the same paper, the typeface was the same.

Late in the fifth season of Netflix’s The Crown, Queen Elizabeth (Imelda Staunton) asks her grandson William (Senan West) for help with the complicated remote control for the palace’s new satellite dish. As William flips through the many new channels in search of the BBC, Her Royal Majesty briefly finds herself watching Beavis and Butt-head. Much like one of her predecessors, she is not amused.
It is the Nineties, and Elizabeth has agreed to get the satellite dish because her old TV and antenna are no longer up to snuff.

'Even the televisions are metaphors in this place," says Queen Elizabeth II when her ancient TV suddenly goes on the fritz, its screen fuzzy and fading. It's a cheeky, winking little line from the writers of "The Crown" as the series enters an era of decline for the royal family. Things are falling apart left and right, including people's bodies, as the characters age into health problems and general malaise. It was a stroke of genius to frequently recast the characters of "The Crown" as they age because it hammers home the inevitable passage of time; the sense that the clock is always ticking, and sooner or later, it's going to run out for everyone.
As usual, "The Crown" follows Elizabeth and her immediate family as they deal with the ever-changing times. I've long felt "The Crown" is the spiritual successor to "Mad Men" (though not nearly as good as...

Is it possible to square loving The Crown with ambivalence about the “crown”? This has always been the fine line that Netflix’s behemoth has straddled. A fussy, at times unlikeable, protagonist, carrying the flag for institutions that, at the most charitable, represent hereditary privilege, and, at the less forgiving end of the spectrum, the atrocities of the British Empire. As mitigation, the show’s creator Peter Morgan has turned the central figure, Elizabeth II, into a prism through which to view the 20th century. From the twilight of Empire through the Cold War, by way of crises in Suez and Falklands, Aberfan and the Troubles. A noble solution, until, that is, you run out of history.
And so we find ourselves now, with the show’s fifth outing, firmly in the recent memory. John Major is prime minister. Prince Charles (Dominic West) is a jug-eared familiar, and Anne (Claudia Harrison...

Prince Harry’s memoir, an object of obsessive anticipation worldwide since it was first announced last year, is coming out Jan. 10.
The book will be called Spare and is being billed by Penguin Random House as an account told with “raw, unflinching honesty” and filled with “insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.”
In a statement released Thursday, Penguin Random House summoned memories of the stunning 1997 death of Prince Harry’s mother, Diana, and the subsequent image of Harry and his brother “walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow — and horror.”
“As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling — and how their lives would play out from that point on,” the statement reads in part.
“For Harry, this is his story at last.

There is plenty to be excited about regarding the upcoming fifth season of The Crown, especially the events it will cover. The Crown's Elizabeth Debicki addresses concerns regarding how Princess Diana's death will be handled in the show. The upcoming season of the hit Netflix television series will focus on Queen Elizabeth II's reign through the 1990s. Harry Potter's Imelda Staunton will be playing the Queen in its final two seasons, after she was portrayed by Claire Foy in seasons 1 and 2 and Olivia Colman in seasons 3 and 4. The Crown season 5 will also be the first to release after the deaths of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II, who respectively passed away in April 2021 and September 2022.

Nearly 25 years after her death, she remains the Queen of Hearts. But even now, we continue to learn more about Diana Spencer — and her fortitude. A new six-part CNN docuseries, Diana, probes how a country girl from the east of England grew up to wed a prince and become a role model for generations to come. Going in, exec producer Matt Robins wanted to avoid depicting Diana as a tragic figure. “Because she died young, we tend to put that tag onto her,” he says. “She was born into a privileged life full of joys. Emotionally she goes through some incredibly tough times, but what we try to do that’s different is to apply a 21st-century lens.” People who knew the icon, such as biographer Andrew Morton, share their perspectives, but Robins also enlists a wide range of journalists and royal experts to bring “a fresh and modern context.

Princess Diana tragically died in a car accident in Paris in August 1997, but her life has continued to captivate the public over 20 years later. While Diana was known for her charity work and genuine closeness to the public over the years, it was her relationship with Prince Charles and the royal family in general that really got people talking. Diana and Charles got engaged in 1981 after only going on 12 dates, tied the knot five months later, welcomed sons William and Harry, and ultimately divorced in 1996.

It took only a few hours for “The Crown” to cause a royal rumble when it launched on Netflix over the weekend, and there are no prizes for guessing why.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana's relationship was turbulent from beginning to end, to put it lightly. While The Crown has touched on many of the milestones of the royal family as a whole, it doesn't delve into some of the intricacies of all of the relationships, especially that of Prince Charles and Princess Diana and more specifically their separation.
The royal couple had a rough go from the start. The two met when Diana was just 16 years old and got engaged in 1981, despite Charles's romantic history with Camilla Parker Bowles and prior interest in marrying her. During their official engagement interview, they were asked if they were in love, and while Diana eagerly answered in the affirmative, Charles replied, "Whatever 'in love' means."

Princess Diana was many things to many people, but above all else, she was an adoring and doting mother of two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. While much is known about Diana's special connection with her boys, there's one thing people may not know about Harry's birth in particular: Prince Charles "desperately" wanted a little girl, and Diana, knowing that she was carrying a baby boy, kept the secret from her husband throughout her entire pregnancy.

We all know how strongly Diana, Princess of Wales, and Camilla Parker Bowles felt about each other in the '80s and '90s. As Diana's marriage to Prince Charles fell apart, she laid the blame very firmly with Camilla, and the uncomfortable and sometimes angry relationship between the two was played out on a very public stage. But the two women were initially friends. Camilla's biographer, Penny Junor, noted that when Lady Diana Spencer first began dating the heir to the throne in 1980, they were often guests at Bolehyde Manor in Wiltshire, the country home Camilla shared with her first husband, Andrew Parker Bowles. The women enjoyed each other's company, and Diana is said to have enjoyed helping Camilla with her young children, Tom and Laura.
