Vendredi 13, chapitre V : Une nouvelle terreur (1985)
Interview: Melanie Kinnaman looks back on Friday the 13th: A New Beginning
Vendredi 13, chapitre V : Une nouvelle terreur (1985)
Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, the fifth film in the Friday the 13th franchise, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year – and JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was recently able to catch up with Melanie Kinnaman, who played the film’s heroine, at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California! Ryan talked with Kinnaman about her experience working on the classic slasher, and you can watch the interview in the video embedded above.

Directed by Danny Steinmann, who also crafted the screenplay with Martin Kitrosser and David Cohen, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning has the following synopsis: Years after Tommy Jarvis murdered hockey-masked serial killer Jason Voorhees, he resides in a mental hospital and struggles with the trauma of the experience. When Tommy moves to an isolated halfway house, he has nightmares about Jason’s return, and soon one of the patients is killed. As the body count grows,...

Ranking the Jason Voorhees Actors on a Wintery Friday the 13th
Image
Few franchises own a day of the year, but even fewer own an inconsistent date. That inconsistency helps make every Friday the 13th feel like a surprise in its own right, which makes any time to celebrate Jason Voorhees a worthwhile occasion. With that in mind, one of the cooler aspects of the franchise has been a rotating group of actors, each with their own spin on Jason Voorhees. Don’t get us wrong, a lot of this comes down to the directors and quality of the movies, but each brings something unique to the role.

Ranking the Jason Voorhees Actors 13. Dick Wieand (Friday the 13th: A New Beginning)

Well, sorry if you didn’t know that Dick Wieand plays Roy, who becomes Jason. However, A New Beginning a shockingly bad entry as a whole. His ninety-ish seconds are indicative of the poor quality of the movie overall. Nothing against Wieand,...

Halloween: Why Michael Myers Is Called The Shape
Image
Halloweens villain Michael Myers has become a cinematic icon and a favorite among horror fans, and while many are aware that Michael Myers was originally named The Shape, they might not know why. The Halloween franchise has seen many ups and downs with multiple retcons, remakes, and reboots of the series. Though not all Halloween films have been successful, they have certainly helped maintain the popularity and reputation of Michael Myers, who is now part of pop culture, being referred to and parodied on multiple occasions in different films and TV shows from all genres.

Michael Myers is credited as "The Shape in the original Halloween before being officially credited as "Michael Myers" in the sequels, only for the most recent Halloween trilogy, including Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, to return to crediting him as The Shape. With the constant switching back and forth, and the fact that the name...

Every Actor Who Played Jason Voorhees In Friday the 13th Movies, Ranked
Image
Throughout the Friday the 13th series, many actors have played the iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, some better than others. Jason Voorhees cycled through looks and costumes across the years, as well as actors, many of whom only played the character once. The films sometimes brought in different actors in each movie to stand in for Jason when he wasn't wholly on screen, but each movie generally has one or, in some cases, two actors associated with the role. Many shots of the killer remain faceless, mirroring Jason's menacing yet sneaky killing style.

Jason Voorhees typically wears a hockey mask when his face is shown, which has become synonymous with the killer. The character design allowed him to be played solely by stuntmen since throughout the Friday the 13th franchise, Jason kills but doesn't speak. With a series that is over 40 years old with many film and television installments, fans are...

Meet the Only Person To Play Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Leatherface
Image
Slashers ruled the late 1970s and the '80s, but while the likes of Michael Myers from the Halloween movies, Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th franchise, and Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series became iconic household names, most people don't know who played them. Robert Englund became famous for playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, but that was because his face was seen, even behind the burn scar makeup, and we heard his voice. For the masked villains, we didn't see their faces or hear them speak. It could have been any ol' stuntman behind the mask; and oftentimes, it was. Sometimes they made enough of a mark that a lot of horror fans now know them, like Gunnar Hansen who is the original Leatherface, Nick Castle who gave us the first Michael Myers, and Kane Hodder, the most famous Jason Voorhees due to...

Changeling Vs. Chameloid: Star Treks Shapeshifters Differences Explained
Image
Changelings take center stage with their superior shapeshifting abilities in Star Trek, leaving Chameloids behind. Chameloids like Martia lack the political prowess and versatile abilities of Changelings in the Star Trek universe. Sam Richardson's Chameloid character in Star Trek: Section 31 may finally showcase the unique advantages of Chameloids.

Chameloids and Changelings are both shapeshifting aliens in the Star Trek universe, but these two individual species are very different. Chameloids were first introduced in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, when a Chameloid named Martia (Iman) encountered Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForrest Kelley) in the Klingon prison, Rura Penthe. Constable Odo (Rene Auberjonois) of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was the franchise's first Changeling, though Odo didn't know his important origin as a Founder of the Dominion when DS9 started.

Changelings and Chameloids haven't been given equal due in Star Trek, despite having similar abilities to impersonate people.

Who Is Iman? Star Treks First Chameloid Shapeshifter Explained
Image
Iman's iconic portrayal of Martia, a Chameloid in Star Trek VI, set the stage for the return of shape-shifting aliens in Section 31. While Chameloids disappeared after Star Trek VI due to the rise of Changelings in DS9, Section 31 will reintroduce the mysterious race. Section 31's new Chameloid character opens doors for deeper exploration of their culture, but it's unlikely Iman will make a return.

Supermodel and actress Iman played Martia, Star Trek's first Chameloid, in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. The final movie for the cast of Star Trek: The Original Series saw Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley) framed for murder and sent to the Rura Penthe penal colony. Martia was one of the other prisoners, and used her abilities as a shape-shifter to enable Kirk and McCoy's escape while harboring ulterior motives.

While Martia wasn't the...

Fashion Friday The 13th: All Of Jason Voorhees' Looks, Ranked
Image
The Friday the 13th franchise has seen many revisions of Jason Voorhees' iconic outfit, with each movie revealing a different stage in his character journey. Not every costume is created equal, with some of Jason's looks being less impressive than others. The fake Jason in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning lacks screen time and doesn't live up to the real Jason's official look. Some of Jason's looks, like the one in Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, feature impressive makeup and visual design, showcasing a frighteningly rotten visage and distressed outfit.

In the Friday the 13th franchise, seeing the Jason Voorhees outfit in each movie reveals where he is at in his character journey. Though possessing an iconic look, no other slasher villain has gone through as many revisions as Jason. Except for the first movie, the franchise follows Jason Voorhees, who seemingly drowned as a...

Friday The 13th: Every Jason Voorhees Mask, Ranked
Image
The masks in the Friday the 13th series changed over time, reflecting the evolution of Jason Voorhees as a slasher killer. Each movie in the series featured a different mask, ranging from iconic to disappointing, but Jason's appearance remained one of the most iconic in slasher horror movie history. In some movies, the masks showed degradation and deterioration, symbolizing the loss of Jason's humanity and hinting at his demonic presence.

The Jason Voorhees masks changed little by little as the Friday the 13th series wore on, and it was easy to see Jason's humanity slipping away as the masks deteriorated. Friday the 13th began in 1980 when Sean Cunningham directed the first movie in the franchise about a mysterious killer taking out young people at a summer camp called Crystal Lake. However, that first movie wasn't about Jason, it was about his mother, Pamela Voorhees, killing counselors as she continued to...

Silver Scream Con 2023 Event Report – Sometimes the Sequel Is Even Better Than the Original
Image
Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, Silver Scream Con returned to the Doubletree Boston North Shore in Danvers, Massachusetts on September 8-10 — ’cause let’s face it, baby, these days you gotta have a sequel!

Created by horror-inspired metalcore band Ice Nine Kills, Silver Scream Con has quickly established itself as a top-tier horror convention among celebrity guests and attendees alike. “Everybody’s been really nice, and I’m enjoying myself immensely,” said Tommy Lee Wallace, who created Michael Myers’ iconic mask for the original Halloween before going on to direct Halloween III: Season of the Witch. “I hope everyone gets the shit scared out of them!”

Not even severe thunderstorm alerts could stop the rabid fans, who traveled not just from all over North America but as far as Finland, Scotland, and England to attend. Ticket sales reportedly doubled from the previous year’s already-commendable showing,...

Who Is Billy? Black Christmas 1974's Ending Explained
Image
Bob Clark's 1974 horror film Black Christmas is one of the most influential slasher movies of all time, and the Black Christmas ending is unforgettably chilling. In Black Christmas, Billy is considered the villain, and after almost 50 years, his identity is still debated. The story takes place in a sorority house, where the residents are throwing a Christmas party before they depart. Little do they know, however, that a perverted killer has made his way into the house, and is preparing to pick them off one by one. The Billy Black Christmas character remains in the shadows for most of the movie, that is, until the chilling ending.

The Billy Black Christmas character is widely considered to be one of the first slasher movie killers in film history. He doesn't don a mask or a disguise like other famous murderers, such as Tom Morga's Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers.

The Final Girls From The Friday The 13th Franchise, Ranked
Image
When you think slashers, your mind immediately goes to the Final Girl. While the term wasn't coined until 1992, it was a prevalent trope throughout the '70s and '80s, namely through such works as "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" (Sally Hardesty), "Black Christmas" (Jess Bradford), and "Halloween" (Laurie Strode). These trendsetting heroines cemented the idea that women could be the heroes of their own stories. In many cases, the Final Girl just happened to be the last woman standing through sheer luck; in others, they slashed their way to triumph all on their own. One of the franchises most known for its many Final Girls is "Friday the 13th," which dominated the 1980s and showcased some of the slasher genre's most iconic protagonists.

Throughout its run 一 from the 1980 original to the 2009 remake 一 the series' Final Girls have run the gamut. Some are tough-as-nails warriors from the get-go,...

George P. Wilbur, Actor And Stunt Man Known For Halloween Movies, Has Died At 81
Image
The stunt world has lost a superstar. George P. Wilbur, the prolific stunt performer, coordinator, and double has died at the age of 81.

Film fans and critics seldom give stunt performers the love they deserve, but as "Once Upon A Time... in Hollywood" showed us, they're often the invisible pillars holding up entire productions. Without their high-octane mix of bravery and precise training, and with a generous dash of daredevil recklessness, we would never have gotten the death-defying, thrill-inducing, price-of-the-ticket justifying action that has made films like "Die Hard," "Escape From New York," and "Total Recall" such rewatchable classics. And Wilbur, whose resume was nearing a stunning 150 credits when he retired in 2013, did stunts on all of them.

Born at the height of the Second World War in Connecticut, in 1941, Wilbur would go on to enlist in the Navy before eventually finding his way to Tuscon, Arizona, where he worked...

La Nuit des masques (1978)
R.I.P.: George P. Wilbur, the Michael Myers of Halloween 4 and 6, has passed away
La Nuit des masques (1978)
Fans of the Halloween franchise received some sad news today, as it has been confirmed that stuntman George P. Wilbur – who played horror icon Michael Myers in both Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), the sixth entry in the series – has passed away at the age of 81.

Wilbur’s fellow Michael Myers performer Chris Durand, who played the character in 1998’s Halloween H20, broke the news of his passing on Facebook earlier today: “George P. Wilbur passed away last night. George, you were a class act and well loved. You will be missed. May you Rest in Peace.” Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers screenwriter Daniel Farrands reacted to the news by saying, “Very sad to hear of George’s passing. He was such a kind soul and a beloved member of the Halloween family.“

Born on March 6, 1941 in Connecticut, Wilbur served...

Tom Morga: The Only Actor To Play Michael Myers, Leatherface & Jason Voorhees
Image
When one thinks of iconic slasher villains, three names come to mind: Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, and Michael Myers — and horror actor Tom Morga has played all three. Tom Morga is mainly known for his various Star Trek roles, as he's technically the most-seen stuntman on the series. It's not hard to believe, considering he's performed stunts in six different Star Trek productions, including The Next Generation and The Final Frontier. The stuntman has also turned into a stunt coordinator for several projects, such as Big Time Rush and Dead Air. In 2007 Tom Morga was awarded the Taurus World Stunt Award for "Best Fight" in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

To be a proper horror villain is no easy feat. One can't be too expressive when shielded by a mask or heavy prosthetics. So, actors like Tom Morga have had to rely on their body language alone...

La Nuit des masques (1978)
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
La Nuit des masques (1978)
The Halloween franchise gets a lot of attention during the month of October, and while fans are revisiting the past films and watching the new one, Halloween Ends (read our review Here), in theatres and on the Peacock streaming service, we decided this was a good time to dig into the making of one of the Halloween films with a new episode of our Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series. The movie being covered this time around is my personal favorite of the sequels, 1988’s Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (watch it Here) – and you can find out all about the film’s development and production by checking out the video embedded above!

Directed by Dwight H. Little from a screenplay by Alan B. McElroy, Halloween 4 has the following synopsis, lifted from the back of the VHS release:

Only One Actor Has Played Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees And Leatherface
The horror genre may continue to be one of Hollywood’s most profitable enterprises, with the majority of low-budget efforts tending to do decent business at the box office based on folks’ continued love of being scared out of their seats, but despite how many franchises have popped up in recent years, with the exception of Saw‘s Jigsaw and It‘s Pennywise, we haven’t seen many iconic characters that can hold a candle to the famous faces that dominated the 1980s.

No matter how many horror sequels are churned out on an annual basis, when it comes to naming the most recognizable villains that the genre has ever seen, veterans like Leatherface, Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Pinhead and Freddy Kreuger are always the first ones that come to mind. Of course, every single one of them has fallen victim to the law of diminishing returns over the years,...

For horror fans, every day is Halloween during the month of October. This year, however, will be one for the books. We're just about 6 weeks shy from the premiere of Blumhouse's Halloween, slated to slash into Us theaters on October 19th. It's being billed as a direct sequel to John Carpenter's original Halloween (released in 1978) and will see Laurie Strode (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) reunited with original Michael Myers actor Nick Castle for a battle royale 40 years in the making. Word on the street is that the footage released at Comic-Con last July will hit the Internet tomorrow in the form of a brutal new trailer. Today, producers are whetting our collective appetites with a new poster, one that brings Laurie Strode face-to-face with "The Shape"!

Six Jason Voorhees Actors Recreated Their Look For Texas Frightmare, And It Was Awesome
Whether you’re a casual moviegoer or a full-blown horror buff, you’ve aware of the Friday The 13th films. And whenever you’re discussing the franchise’s longevity, there’s surely one debate you’ll inevitably find yourself in: “Who played Jason best?” That mostly comes down to personal preference, of course, but six of the actors responsible for bringing the slasher icon to life came together at Texas Frightmare recently and even better, they recreated their iconic looks for photo ops.

As you can see in the gallery down below, we’ve got Ken Kirzinger (Freddy Vs. Jason), Tom Morga (A New Beginning), Steve Dash (Friday the 13th Part 2), C.J. Graham (Jason Lives), Ted White (The Final Chapter) and Kane Hodder (Jason Takes Manhattan).

They were photographed in their costumes over the weekend in Grapevine, Texas at the Hyatt Regency Dfw International Airport. Each of the costumes are spot on,...

Flashback Weekend Chicago 2016 Kicks off Friday, Featuring Scream Reunion & Phantasm: Remastered Screenings
It’s hard to believe another Flashback Weekend is almost upon us, but in just a few days, Chicago’s longest-running horror convention will descend upon the Crowne Plaza O’Hare (5440 N. River Road, Rosemont, Il), where thousands of fans will gather to celebrate everything they love about the genre. Flashback Weekend kicks off on Friday, August 5th and runs through Sunday, August 7th, complete with a star-studded line-up, nightly screenings, Q&A panels, costume contests, and much more.

This writer is pleased to be returning to Flashback Weekend for my sixth year as co-host. Two personal highlights for me at this year’s convention have to be the Scream Reunion Screening and Q&A on Saturday evening, featuring Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, and Matthew Lillard, as well as seeing Don Coscarelli returning to Flashback, this time with Phantasm: Remastered in tow.

Other featured guests at the 2016 Flashback Weekend Horror Convention include Malcolm McDowell,...

Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror Convention is Gearing Up for an Incredible 15th Year this August
One of my very favorite horror conventions has always been Flashback Weekend in Chicago, Illinois. For years, I attended Flashback as a fan and for the last six years, it’s been a huge honor for me to head back to serve as one of the convention co-hosts and work with Mike and Mia Kerz, two of the most selfless folks you’ll ever meet working in the industry.

Flashback Weekend will be celebrating its 15th anniversary this August 5th through the 7th and is being held at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare (5440 N. River Road, Chicago). This year’s schedule is shaping up to be yet another incredible time for midwestern horror fans, and there are still many announcements to come! So far, attendees can look forward to a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Scream, with a cast reunion featuring Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, and Matthew Lillard.

Dying to attend Jasonpalooza?
Teenagers looking to have some pre-marital sex, underage drinking and  illicit substances are urged to avoid The Burbank Airport Marriott Hotel & Convention Center at all costs this Saturday and Sunday. Those activities are frowned upon by a certain homicidal, hockey mask-wearing zombie.  That zombie is in town, because The Hollywood Collectors Show will be holding a "Jasonpalooza" featuring seven Jason Voorhees from the unkillable Friday The 13th franchise.

The gruesome guests include Jason #1, Ari Lehman, Warrington Gillette and Steve Dash ("Baghead Jason"), John Hock, Dick Weiand, Tom Morga, Richard Brooker, Ken Kirzinger,  and the great Kane Hodder, among other Friday faces.

To show there's no hard feelings between them and their former stalker, Adrienne King and Darcy DeMoss will also be in attendance. (Darcy is also arguably the most impressive kill in the series, when Jason V. slams her head into a wall, leaving her impression on an Rv in Jason Lives!

Friday The 13th Part V: A New Beginning and Part VI: Jason Lives (DVD Reviews)
Every slasher fan has their own choice as the best in the original Jason Voorhees film series, and mine is Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. From its opening title that winks at the James Bond flicks, this entry provided a welcome sense of knowing humor to the by-then repetitious proceedings, without making fun of Jason himself. (As writer/director Tom McLoughlin has often stated, and does so again on the new Deluxe Edition DVD, that was one of franchise producer Frank Mancuso Jr.’s directives when McLoughlin took this gig.)

Those light touches, and the general panache McLoughlin brings to the film, were a refreshing change from the crudities of the previous A New Beginning (which doesn’t actually sport a Part V on screen—and, as mentioned on its own Deluxe disc, was actually called Repetition during filming). Director/co-writer Danny Steinmann does bring a rude energy to this entry,...
