  • He was the captain of the England Soccer team that won the World Cup in 1966.
  • Charter member of the International Soccer Hall of Fame.
  • Besides West Ham United, he played for the following clubs: Fulham, San Antonio Thunder (NASL) and Seattle Sounders (NASL).
  • In 1966 he became the first footballer to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
  • He was detained for questioning by the Colombian authorities over the false accusation of theft of a £625 diamond and emerald bracelet on the eve of England's opening World Cup clash in 1970.
  • He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1967 Queen's New Year Honours List for his services to Association Football.
  • Alan Ball considered him to be one of England's five truly world class players in the 1966 World Cup winning squad. The others were Gordon Banks, Ray Wilson, Bobby Charlton and Jimmy Greaves.
  • Publicly supported Margaret Thatcher in the 1979 General Election.
  • Played 108 times for England (1962 to 1973) and scored 2 goals.
  • 544 appearances for West Ham United in English First Division (1958 to 1973), scored 24 goals.
  • Took part in 2 FIFA world cups (1966 in England and 1970 in Mexico).
  • A memorial service was held for him at Westminster Abbey on 28 June 1993.
