Biography

    • Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein KG GCB DSO PC DL (17 November 1887 - 24 March 1976 Alton) was a British military officer during World War II sometimes referred to as "Monty". He attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He married Elizabeth Carver and had a son, named David.

      He fought in the First World War, where he reached the rank of lieutenant colonel and was shot twice, one in the chest, staying 3 hours on the battlefield until he was taken out and treated. During the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921), Montgomery was the commanding officer of County Cork, Ireland, the largest county in the area. This conflict was notable for its ferocity and the reprisals carried out by UK forces. He was promoted to general in 1938. During the campaign in France in 1940, he commanded one of the British divisions, and evacuated at Dunkirk.
