Comedies tend to err on the side of cringe, and Jhett Tolentino‘s “Asian Persuasion” is no exception. The “Lingua Franca” (2019) producer tries their hand at humor, with mixed results. The film appeared at a handful of local film festivals two years ago, when it took home the Audience Award at the SoHo International Film Festival. Now, the film is coming to North American theaters this weekend, with limited theatrical release.
“Asian Persuasion” will play in 40+ theaters in North America from Friday, 21 March, 2025.
“Asian Persuasion” is as Asian American as it gets. Here, Mickey (Dante Basco) goes through a divorce with his fashion executive wife, Avery (Kc Concepcion). Mickey only realizes after signing the papers that his alimony is way beyond his means, as a humble Filipino-themed café owner in Woodside, Queens. Paul King is developing a solo film based on an often overshadowed Disney character, Prince Charming. After successfully launching the Paddington franchise and having a surprise hit with the musical Wonka, King will team with Disney on his next film. He has emerged as one of the most beloved and exciting filmmakers currently working today and seemingly can take a bad idea on paper and turn it into a hit. He made a name for himself directing all 20 episodes of the surreal comedy series The Mighty Boosh on BBC and has since directed Paddington, the more beloved Paddington 2, and Wonka.
Deadline has reported that Paul King is set to direct a Prince Charming film, making it the first time the character has become the focus of a Disney movie in his own right. King will co-write the script alongside British comedian and Paddington 2 co-writer Simon Farnaby and Jon Croker,...

Kylie Cantrall and Malia Baker know their Descendants tunes. They proved as much in the exclusive TV Insider video above, as we tested their knowledge on song lyrics from across the franchise’s films to see if they could name that tune. The stars of the franchise’s fourth installment, Descendants: The Rise of Red, came to the TV Insider studio this summer to give a glimpse into their new movie, available to stream now on Disney+. And the pair was all smiles as they sang their way through their fictional universe’s memory lane. The girls team up to save the kingdom of Auradon by traveling back in time using the White Rabbit’s pocket watch to stop an event that would cause grave consequences.

Brandy reprised her iconic role as Cinderella in Descendants: Rise of Red, tapping into nostalgia. The film incorporated diverse casting, acknowledging Brandy's historic role and paving the way for more inclusive storytelling. Rise of Red bridges Disney's past and present, showcasing the evolution of Disney storytelling for a more diverse future.
Disney has made a smart move to incorporate a bit of nostalgic casting into Descendants: Rise of Red. Descendants has historically wanted to acknowledge Disney's legacy while reshaping it for contemporary tweens. Brandy Norwood charmed a generation with her portrayal of Cinderella in the 1997 made-for-tv movie, and she reprised a version of her iconic role in Rise of Red continuing this trend. Brandy's casting piqued the interest of a generation of millennial parents, helping the franchise stad the test of time.
Descendants: Rise of Red is the fourth film in the franchise and, perhaps disappointingly, most of the original cast opted not to return.

Rita Ora recieved some valuable advice from Brandy, one queen to another, on their new Disney+ movie.
The You & I artist explained why the Cinderella (1997) star told her to “stop” apologizing on the set of Descendants: The Rise of Red, which is now available to stream on Disney+ ahead of its August 9 Disney Channel premiere.
She recalled filming an “iconic” coup scene in which her Queen of Hearts character takes Brandy’s Cinderella as a hostage. “‘Off with her head!’ It’s a very iconic quote for Queen of Hearts, and I was trying to find my version of that,” Ora told Entertainment Weekly.
But Ora found it difficult pretending to be mean to the Moesha alum, whom she “would try and imitate every day in my bedroom” as a kid.
“Every scene after that, I would be like, ‘I’m so sorry, I don’t mean it,'” she added.

Brandy's return as Cinderella in Descendants: The Rise of Red is highly anticipated and brings extra Disney nostalgia to the film. While Brandy's portrayal of Cinderella will differ from her performance in the 1997 TV movie, her casting as the first Black actress to play the role was groundbreaking for inclusivity and representation. The spinoff opens up the possibility of exploring sequels or spinoffs centered around Brandy's Cinderella, such as focusing on her daughter Chloe or delving into her role as a mother and queen.
Brandy is set to reprise her most beloved Disney role in the upcoming spinoff movie Descendants: The Rise of Red. The actress previously played Cinderella in a 1997 live-action musical, which was adapted from the Rodgers and Hammerstein show inspired by the famous fairy tale, and her casting was a groundbreaking move in inclusivity and representation. Ahmed Best had to think long and hard about guest-starring in the latest episode of Disney+’s The Mandalorian, due to the “rollercoaster ride of emotions” he endured as the prequel film trilogy’s Jar Jar Binks.

The singer’s long-awaited return as Cinderella in a new Disney television movie has been given an official first look, courtesy of footage from the set of “Descendants: Rise of Red.” Brandy is reprising the role of Cinderella 26 years after becoming the princess opposite Whitney Houston’s Fairy Godmother in the 1997 television movie “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella.”
The set footage also confirmed that “Descendants: Rise of Red” will feature the return of Paolo Montalban, who played Brandy’s Prince Charming in the 1997 movie, which was groundbreaking for its multicultural casting. Charming is now king, and Cinderella is queen.
Variety confirmed last November that Brandy boarded the “Descendants” movie as Cinderella. At the time, the movie musical had the working title of “The Pocketwatch.” The film centers on the relationship between Red (Kylie Cantrall), the rebellious teenage daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe...

The next installment in Disney’s Descendants saga includes a royal reunion 26 years in the making.
The Disney+ film, which is now titled Descendants: The Rise of Red, has cast Paolo Montalban as King Charming. Fun on its own, this news becomes considerably more exciting when you remember that Brandy Norwood is playing Cinderella; she and Montalban previously played Cinderella and Prince Charming in an iconic production for ABC’s Wonderful World of Disney back in 1997.

The Mandalorian Reveals Grogu's Savior During Order 66 — and He Sorta Hassa Big Prequel Trilogy Ties
The Mandalorian this week shed light on how exactly Grogu was saved years ago from the Order 66 bloodbath — and the reveal involved a big-time (iffa polarizing!) prequel trilogy callback of sorts.
The early gist of Season 3, Episode 4 (titled “The Foundling”) opened with the first steps in Grogu’s training to eventually rise up to Mandalorian apprentice level. That involved a challenge, against a Mandalorian kid, to a game of “darts” — which in this case are wrist-fired paintballs. The first to score three hits wins, and sure enough, Grogu’s opponent easily splats him with both of his first two salvos.

Whitney Houston was right: "Impossible things are happening every day." The first Black woman to ever play Cinderella on screen and the Vocal Bible herself, Brandy will be wearing her glass slippers once again as she reprises the role for the "Descendants" prequel film, "The Pocketwatch" for Disney+, according to Variety. Brandy first played the role in the 1997 "Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella" made-for-tv movie. At the time of release, the film was the most expensive made-for-tv film in history, a delightfully zany adaptation of the classic tale featuring catchy songs, an unbelievable costume design from Ellen Mirojnick, and a racially diverse cast that was a revolution.
"The Pocketwatch" takes place in the ridiculously popular "The Descendants" franchise, which focuses on the children of some of Disney's most memorable characters. The story centers on Red (Kyle Cantrall), the rebellious teenage daughter of the Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora), who crosses paths...
