The Big Bang Theory franchise is further expanding with a new spinoff coming to the HBO Max streaming service. This won't be your typical sitcom, however, with sci-fi and fantasy elements sure to make the new series stand apart from the others.

The show is called Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, with Kevin Sussman reprising his role as Stuart, the comic book store owner, in the original series. Per Variety, series co-creator Chuck Lorre shared an update on Stuart Fails to Save the Universe while at the Banff World Media Festival in Banff, Alberta, Canada. Lorre confirmed that ten episodes of the new show have already been written, going on to hint at how "a lot of CGI" is being used to add elements of science fiction and fantasy.

Expect some big effects on “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” the latest “The Big Bang Theory” series in development at HBO Max under Chuck Lorre, fellow “Big Bang” creator Bill Prady and screenwriter Zak Penn (“The Avengers”).

Speaking Monday at the Banff World Media Festival in Banff, Alberta, Canada, Lorre gave a few tidbits on the show, including the fact that he, Penn and Prady have already written ten episodes. (The Warner Bros. TV project is still in development phase and has not yet been formally picked up by HBO Max — although that seems to be a very likely thing.)

Before the show ended after 12 successful seasons, creators Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, Steven Molaro, and Steve Holland turned to real-life physicists to ensure that the science discussed by Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and his friends was always accurate. Of course, Mayim Bialik provided some scientific insights as well, as the actor behind Amy Farrah Fowler has a Phd in neuroscience from U.C.L.A.

In a 2018 interview with NPR, Bialik recalled taking a hiatus from the entertainment industry after finding success as a child star on "Blossom." She explained that she wasn't interested in any of the sitcom offers she received after the show came to an end, which prompted her academic pursuits. Not only that, but Bialik also wanted to prove that there was more to her than performing.

Prequels are tricky narrative propositions. In many cases, they're cynically conceived to wring out whatever juice still remains in a film or television franchise. They're often unsatisfying in a storytelling sense, leaving viewers ticking off the minutes or episodes until they arrive at the starting point of the thing they loved in the first place.

And yet there are exceptions. Tony Gilroy just completed a "Star Wars" prequel masterclass with the second season of "Andor," which leads into the emotionally devastating "Rogue One." Meanwhile, Vince Gilligan arguably topped the towering achievement of "Breaking Bad" with the crushingly tragic Slippin' Jimmy spinoff "Better Call Saul." Raegan Revord had some strict rules to follow while playing Missy Cooper on "Young Sheldon," and she wasn't allowed any input over her character's style -- at least not during the show's early seasons. In fact, it wasn't until after Revord was involved in a real car crash that the creators of the "Big Bang Theory" prequel series allowed her to have more influence on Missy. That being said, the showrunners probably trusted her at this point, as they noticed Revord's progression behind the scenes.

In a 2024 interview with People, co-showrunner Steve Holland noted that Revord became a reliable actor during her tenure on "Young Sheldon." Impressed by her performances, he and the series' other creators, Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, eventually gave her more responsibilities and chances to shine on the screen. In his own words:

As the first spin-off of "The Big Bang Theory," "Young Sheldon" initially felt like a dicey proposition. The potential was there for a zany sitcom that strained to get big laughs out of a child actor (Iain Armitage) who mimicked all of Jim Parsons' mannerisms and catchphrases. There was also the fact that viewers knew, through 12 seasons of meted-out backstory, Sheldon didn't have a particularly enjoyable childhood. An exciting update has been revealed about the future of Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage. The Young Sheldon sequel series has been finding success of its own, and it would seem that CBS wants to spend a lot more time with the newlyweds after Season 1.

Per Deadline, it's been revealed that Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage has officially been renewed for Season 2. It's one of multiple shows to be given a renewal on Thursday, it was also reported that Ghosts had picked up a two-season renewal at the network. “George is thinking about his dad, and he’s worried that his dad might be disappointed in him,” Holland told reporters about how they will incorporate Barber. “When we were breaking this episode, it just seemed like a great opportunity to bring George back.”

Now, series co-creators Chuck Lorre, Steve Holland and Steven Molaro have confirmed he will reprise the character and just how they will do it.

“George is thinking about his dad, and he’s sort of worried that his dad might be disappointed in him,” co-creator Steve Holland shared, via TV Line. “And so, his dad visits him in a dream. [The idea] came out of a conversation we’d had with Chuck [Lorre], even early on, talking about the show. Chuck had said about his own father that he still dreams about him, he still visits him, so that was a thing we had thought about.

The death of George Cooper Sr. (Lance Barber) was set in stone as soon as "Young Sheldon" aired its first episode. Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) had revealed that he'd been forced to deal with his old man passing away during his teenage years on "The Big Bang Theory," so the prequel series was always going to chronicle the heartbreaking event. Sure, "Young Sheldon" flat-out changes some plot points from "The Big Bang Theory," but George's death was unavoidable, and it's a tear-jerking viewing experience.

Of course, the creators of "The Big Bang Theory" probably weren't thinking about making "Young Sheldon" when they decided to seal George's fate. Fortunately, Steven Molaro and Steve Holland had no regrets about their decision when they returned for the prequel, as they explained in a 2024 interview with Glamour. To quote Holland on the matter:

"I think it gave the show a real strong emotional closure,...

Sometimes a TV show starts to change throughout its run, morphing into something new as the writers and producers get a handle on what works best for the characters and story. The most obvious and common changes are often to a show's tone, as initial ideas are either softened or sharpened and things get more complex. Just look at the brilliant political satire "Veep," which starts as a vulgar dark comedy but eventually becomes depressingly real in its satire, with a final season that's pretty much pitch-black. The hit CBS comedy "Young Sheldon" had a little bit lighter of a transformation, but it was no less dramatic. Already wildly different from its predecessor, "The Big Bang Theory," by simple means of using a single-camera format with no studio audience, "Young Sheldon" transformed even further throughout its seven-season run to become a heartfelt family dramedy.

Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage may have taken over Young Sheldon's timeslot, but its ratings reveal that it isn't quite the replacement that CBS wants it to be. CBS was essentially forced to wrap up The Big Bang Theory prequel due to the franchise's established canon. Young Sheldon's cancelation was due to the timeline, which mandated that at 14 years old, George would die and Sheldon would move out of Texas and to California. Both of them ultimately panned out, even though the network could have easily deviated from continuity to keep the popular series on the air.

Instead of letting The Big Bang Theory franchise end, however, producers Chuck Lorre, Steve Holland, and Steven Molaro came up with a way to continue the Cooper family's story in Texas. With cable subscription rates dwindling and the number of streaming services skyrocketing, it's easier and easier to lose track of all the shows that are released every year. Paramount announced today that The Big Bang Theory will join the Nick at Nite and MTV lineups, bringing holiday cheer through the new year as the 10-time Emmy Award-winning series returns to Paramount for the first time since its run on CBS.

Both brands will kick off their debut with marathon stunts tailored to their audiences. Beginning Tuesday, December 24, Nickelodeon’s nighttime programming block Nick at Nite will host a two-day stunt featuring holiday-themed episodes, including the beloved “Leonard Nimoy’s Napkin.”

On December 27, The Big Bang Theory will debut with Season 4 on Nick at Nite and air daily from 12-2 a.m. (Et/Pt). All 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory are joining Nick at Nite’s stellar late-night roster of popular family comedies, including its spinoff prequel Young Sheldon and Emmy Award-winning sitcoms Friends and Modern Family.

Paramount has unveiled that “The Big Bang Theory” will join its Nick at Nite and MTV lineups.

Starting Dec. 24, the Nickelodeon late-night block will host a two-day marathon of holiday-themed “Big Bang” episodes. On Dec. 27, the network will begin airing the series from 12-2 a.m. every night, starting with Season 4.

On Jan. 1, MTV will host “MTV’s New Year with a Bang,” a non-stop New Year’s marathon of Season 3. Episodes will then air regularly on MTV every Saturday and Sunday starting Jan. 4.

The Big Bang Theory extended its successful run with the spin-off Young Sheldon, featuring Iain Armitage in the iconic role of Sheldon Cooper. While the showrunners did an excellent job continuing the story, there were several inconsistencies between the original sitcom and the spin-off.

More than half a decade after The Big Bang Theory ended with its twelfth and final season and months after Young Sheldon concluded with its seventh and final season, Chuck Lorre once again returned to the screens with a brand new addition to The Big Bang Theory franchise: Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage — the direct sequel to and spin-off of Young Sheldon.

This one mainly encircles the life of the young married parents, Montana Jordan’s Georgie Cooper and Emily Osment’s Mandy McAllister, with its first season taking place back in 1994. The third television series in The Big Bang Theory franchise, this sitcom was created by Lorre along with Steven Molaro and Steve Holland, and its first episode premiered on October 17, 2024.

"The Big Bang Theory" prequel "Young Sheldon" is all about Sheldon Cooper's (Iain Armitage) path from a child prodigy to Jim Parsons' adult version of the character. The prequel approach allows for the inclusion of familiar elements like Parson's narration and numerous allusions to the character's well-known traits and tics, but it also gives creators Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro an opportunity to approach the popular Sheldon in an entirely fresh way. "We were talking about who should definitely be at the grave, and it felt like the core family should be there," Holland explained. "This [storyline] was really about Mary and Georgie, more specifically, and Missy, and about losing George."
