In 2001, during a concert at the Berlin Waldbühne, the weather prevented the the opening act, Söhne Mannheims to perform before a U2 concert. Mittermeier, happened to be in the audience and was spontaneously enlisted as a substitute support act to perform excerpts from his show, "Back to Life.".

Michael Mittermeier is a huge U2 fan, and in 1987 he attended their concert in Munich during which he was invited on stage by Bono to play a song with him on the guitar. This experience inspired him to pursue a career on the stage.
