‘Night Train Murders’ 4K Uhd Review (88 Films)
Image
Stars: Irene Miracle, Laura D’Angelo, Flavio Bucci, Gianfranco De Grassi, Macha Méril, Enrico Maria Salerno, Marina Berti, Franco Fabrizi | Written by Roberto Infascelli, Renato Izzo, Aldo Lado, Ettore Sanzò | Directed by Aldo Lado

88 Films continues to mine the murky depths of cult horror with their 4K Uhd release of Night Train Murders, a chilling piece of Italian exploitation cinema that finds new life in breathtaking visual quality. Presented as part of the “upgraded to 4K” The Italian Collection, this edition transforms Aldo Lado’s grim and provocative thriller into a beautifully restored experience, drawing out details and textures previously buried in older home video versions.

The film follows two young women, Margaret (Irene Miracle) and Lisa (Laura D’Angelo), who embark on a train journey from Germany to Verona during the Christmas holidays. What begins as a carefree trip soon descends into a nightmare when they cross paths with two dangerous young men,...

Puppet Master (1989) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The Puppet Master episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Counting all sequels, prequels, spin-offs, crossovers, and even a Fangoria reboot, there are over a dozen entries in the Puppet Master franchise. Which can make the idea of diving into it rather intimidating. Especially since some of the films don’t have a stellar reputation. But while the series has ups and downs, there are some great entries. And its legion of living puppets – which can be villains or heroes, depending on who’s pulling their strings – are characters you have to see in action. So we’re urging you to give at least some of these films a chance. Starting with the very first Puppet Master (watch it Here)… which may be...

Drive-In Dust Offs: Inferno [Class of 1980]
Image
Dario, Dario, wherefore art thou Dario? As I eagerly await Argento’s next film, I thought I’d take a gander at the film that was supposed to put him over the top in North America, and instead sat unseen on this side of the pond until it was dumped on video in 1985. Of course, I’m talking about Inferno (1980), the sequel to his surprise hit Suspiria (1977), which took the world by the color form collar. Inferno did not have the same impact upon its release, but it is a very effective exercise in style trumping substance.

Twentieth Century Fox co-ponied up $3,000,000 dollars in the hopes of another smash (they also distributed Suspiria), but a changing of the guard stateside is a likely reason for the five year shelving. A pity then; while it can’t match Suspiria’s sustained delirium, Inferno does offer up beautiful nightmares like only Dario can.

Class of 1980: 5 More Films Released in 1980 That Should Be Celebrated
Image
Hello, dear readers! We’re nearing the end of our Class of 1980 celebration (be sure to check back here next week for something very special that I’ve been cooking up with the help of some very special friends), but before we give the genre films of 1980 the grand send-off they so rightly deserve, I thought we should take a moment to tip our hats to five more films from this notable year in horror and sci-fi that all deserve to get some love as well.

Cheers!

Christmas Evil: "Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except for Harry Stading’s mom who was enjoying a little naughty time with her hubby while he’s dressed up like Santa Claus." That ends up being a pivotal moment in poor Harry’s childhood, as he cherishes the holiday and all that it stands for,...

‘Night Train Murders’ Blu-ray Review (88 Films)
Stars: Irene Miracle, Laura D’Angelo, Flavio Bucci, Gianfranco De Grassi, Macha Méril, Enrico Maria Salerno, Marina Berti, Franco Fabrizi | Written by Roberto Infascelli, Renato Izzo, Aldo Lado, Ettore Sanzò | Directed by Aldo Lado

With some of the recent releases from 88 Films they’ve delved into the Video Nasty vaults and picked out a chosen few for Blu-ray releases. With Night Train Murders which is part of The Italian Collection we get Aldo Lado’s take on Last House on the Left which surprisingly manages to be more effective than Wes Craven’s infamous classic.

When Margaret (Irene Miracle) and Lisa (Laura D’Angelo) decide to take the train from Germany to Verona for a Christmas vacation to visit Lisa’s family. Catching the eye of two young men Blackie (Flavio Bucci) and Curly (Gianfranco De Grassi) at first they playfully flirt with them in a conversation that seems innocent enough.

Your 2013 Halloween Season TV Preview (abridged) with Schedules
Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

So here’s the 2013 Halloween Seasonal TV Preview,...

Blu-ray Review: Puppet Master (88 Films)
Puppet Master

Stars: Paul Le Mat, Irene Miracle, Matt Roe, Kathryn O’Reilly, Jimmie F. Skaggs, Robin Frates, William Hickey | Written by Charles Band, Kenneth J. Hall | Directed by David Schmoeller

Ahhh Puppet Master, a film which have seen countless times (at least over two dozen) since I first discovered it all those years ago at my local video rental store. Having owned the VHS (both ex-rental and sell-thru) and the UK and Us DVDs – the huge DVD boxset is still one of my prize possessions – my love for the film remains unbounded. So imagine how excited I was to learn that the film that got me acquainted with Charles Band’s Full Moon and the fantastic, yet perilous puppets, was finally going to see the light of day in glorious high definition on Blu-ray courtesy of 88 Films.

Review: Inferno (Blu-ray)
The tale of the “Three Mothers” started with Suspiria in 1977 is continued in Inferno, released in 1980. Rose Elliot, a young poet (Irene Miracle), discovers some strange things about the building she is living in and writes her brother Mark (Leigh McCloskey) to tell him about what she has uncovered. Once Rose goes missing, Mark comes to New York City to try and figure out what has happened to her.

Dario Argento’s follow up to Suspiria is a classic case of execution over concept. Like the film before it, Inferno has a very thin plot. But that’s not what these films are about. Whether it’s the weird guy who owns the bookstore next door, or the eccentric woman with the odd valet, Mark’s adventure of discovery, much like Suzy’s in Suspiria is what drives the “plot” forward.

Irene Miracle does what she can her small and limited role.

Blu-Ray Review: Dario Argento’s ‘Inferno’ Deserves Another Look
Chicago – If you think studios are fickle now and that the foreign film market is weird, you should know that it’s been that way for a very long time. Take the case of “Inferno,” Dario Argento’s follow-up to his breakthrough film “Suspiria.” Instead of giving it the wide release and support it deserved, the film was buried, barely released theatrically even in New York. Worst of all, critics played along and didn’t give the film nearly the attention they should have, dismissing it probably because it was so different from the first film in the “Three Mothers” trilogy. Time has been kind to “Inferno” and many horror fans have correctly reassessed it as one of Argento’s best. You should do the same now that it’s available on Blu-ray.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0

Blue Underground has done a spectacular job of unearthing ’70s and ’80s horror films for the new format of Blu-ray.

Hereafter (Warner Bros.) Clint Eastwood’s spiritual thriller follows a trio of characters whose seemingly disparate paths converge: Matt Damon as a blue collar Joe who tries to fight against his psychic powers that see “the other side,” Cecile de France as a journalist who somehow survives the tsunami that crushed Indonesia, and a London schoolboy (Frankie and George McLaren) who seeks answers after losing his twin brother. Like all of Eastwood’s films, the narrative construction is tight as a drum, with solid work by all involved. That said, “solid” would have to be the operative word to describe the proceedings here, as well as “unremarkable” and “uninvolving” on an emotional level. Perhaps we expect too much when we see Clint’s name on a film these days, but that’s the flip side of being one of the best. Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

New this Week: ‘Source Code’ and ‘Black Swan (DVD)’
Hitting movie theaters this weekend:

Hop – Russell Brand, James Marsden, Elizabeth Perkins

Insidious – Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins

Source Code – Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga

Movie of the Week

Source Code

The Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga

The Plot: A soldier (Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and is forced to live and relive a harrowing train bombing until he can determine who is responsible for it.

The Buzz: Source Code looks to be a Quantum Leap meets Groundhog Day sci-fi action romp. 35 seconds into the film’s trailer, I half expected Jake Gyllenhaal to utter, “oh boy.” He instead exclaims, “no, no, no, no,” as if to echo my thoughts exactly — I don’t want to see Gyllenhaal act the same “stop the terrorist on the train” scene, over and over and over again.

I have a strong feeling that this...

DVD and Blu-Ray Releases: March 29th - Scream if You Are a Black Swan
It doesn't matter if you're a black swan or a white swan; we're sure you're going to want to bring home the dementedness that is Natalie Portman's Oscar-winning performance in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan.

The film also stars Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder. If you live in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco or Chicago, you can participate in the Black Swan Experience on April 2nd.

Since Scream 4 is coming out in theaters shortly, it is only appropriate that the Scream trilogy is being re-released in glorious Blu-ray. Bring home the franchise created by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson that gave the horror genre a booster shot back in the mid 1990s. A trio from the original cast -- Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette -- will be gracing the big screens with a whole new cast soon enough.

In addition, don't...

Title: Puppet Master Director: David Schmoeller Writers: Charles Band and Kenneth J. Hall Starring: Paul Le Mat, William Hickey and Irene Miracle Since the birth of the the film industry, puppetry has continuously loaned its magic of entertaining people to the screen, particularly in the horror genre. Video Home Invasion: Arrow Video and Argento
One of Arrow Video's great success stories is the championing of Dario Argento's work on home video in the UK.  I know what some of you may be thinking, and perhaps championing Argento isn't exactly controversial position to defend, but no one had really taken up the challenge of rescuing many of these Argento features in Britain from BBFC cut purgatory.  Many of Argento's features have been sliced and diced by the BBFC, and for the most part, home video distributors have made do with the cuts in order to have a marketable product.  Arrow Video, however has taken some of these very same films, including their recent Blu-ray/DVD release of Inferno, back to the BBFC for reclassification, and they won!  They are currently awaiting a decision on Deep Red (Profondo Rosso), which has yet to be seen completely uncut in most areas of the world.  This is...

Tuesday Foreign Region Blu-ray Disc Report: "Inferno" (Dario Argento, 1980)
I first saw Dario Argento's Inferno back in the mid-80s, when being disappointed by a Dario Argento movie meant something entirely different than what being disappointed by a Dario Argento film means today. The ostensible sequel to 1977's groundbreaking Suspiria, the ostensible second installment of a trilogy concerning the "Three Mothers," a wannabe-mythological conceit on which Argento hoped to hang epic international horrors, the 1980 Inferno had been backed by 20th Century Fox, the American studio also behind Suspiria. It got a tiny theatrical release that I completely missed, and was then shelved for quite some time, reaching this writer in video form just as he was also acquiring his Japanese laser discs of such Argento delights as the too-baroque 1982 post-slasher film Unsane a.k.a. Tenebre.

My disappointment with Inferno at the time had to do with its seeming less like a sequel to Suspiria than a mere retread of that film.

Dario Argento’s Inferno Blu-ray review
Director: Dario Argento. Review: Adam Wing. It’s always nice to see classic horror movies get the treatment they deserve on blu-ray, and the upcoming release of Inferno is another fine example courtesy of Arrow Video. Inferno is Dario Argento’s follow up to Suspiria, and while it's not a true sequel in every sense of the word, it does deal with themes introduced in what is arguably Argento’s best-loved film. A belated third chapter called Mother of Tears: The Third Mother completed the trilogy in 2007, but it’s the first two instalments that helped cement Dario’s name in horror legend. The scene is set at an apartment building in New York, where would be heroin Rose (Irene Miracle) purchases a book called The Three Mothers. The book tells the tale of three mothers, Mater Suspiriorum (the mother of sighs), Mater Lachrymarum (the mother of tears), and...
