‘Signs of Life’ Review
Image
Stars: Sharon Duce, Sarah-Jane Potts, David Ganly, Helen Grady, Jessica Millson, Ben Redman, Oliver Jackson | Written and Directed by Joseph Millson

Signs of Life is the feature directorial debut of prolific British actor-turned-filmmaker Joseph Millson. A movie that is an ambitious blend of heart-stopping drama and uplifting optimism. A story that seeks to explore the fragile interplay between grief, human connection, and the redemptive power of kindness. A project that, while very entertaining,g is also absolutely needed out in the world right now, cinema is often a reflection of not where we are, but where we should be or should be heading towards. Produced under MillPotts Productions, the film builds on the thematic groundwork laid by Millson’s award-winning short films The Magician and Care, completing a loose trilogy that grapples with heartache and the beauty of life. While the film has a modest budget and indie ethos, this never limits its polish.

Rami Malek stars as a tech genius CIA agent gone rogue in The Amateur, a ridiculous, but nonetheless entertaining thriller that could easily have been titled Revenge of the Nerd. As such, it has its fair share of good moments, but it’s also not without its flaws.

Malek plays Charlie Heller, a vaguely on the spectrum CIA surveillance expert, whose life is brutally upended when his beloved wife Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan) is taken hostage and murdered by terrorists while on a business trip in London. When his CIA bosses (Holt McCallany and Danny Sapani) refuse to go after the people responsible, a vengeful Charlie blackmails them into giving him special...

‘Hard Home’ Review
Image
Stars: Simone Kessell, Andrew Howard, Rosie Day, Rachel Adedeji, Joseph Millson, Daphne Cheung | Written by Mark Shea Price | Directed by James Bamford

Somebody seems to have a lot of faith in director James Bamford. After years of working as a stuntman and directing episodes of mostly DC Comics-related TV shows, Hard Home is his fourth film to see release this year. The fact that the previous three, Air Force One Down, Jade, and Shadow Land left a lot to be desired is, of course, another matter.

Here he’s working from a script by Mark Shea Price, whose previous credits consist of shorts such as The Mayans Were Right and Raised by Fish. It opens with Mary jogging through the woods and attracting the attention of a Polaroid-wielding psycho when she stops to check out an old cemetery.

He shrugs off being maced, but just as he’s about to kill her,...

High-Tech House Revenge Thriller Movie 'Hard Home' Official Trailer
Image
"Make him pay." Paramount Movies / Republic Pictures have revealed the official trailer for a very cheesy revenge thriller called Hard Home, arriving to watch in June this summer. This is skipping theaters and heading straight to VOD to catch at home if anyone cares. A mother who is deeply saddened by a loss lures her daughter’s killer into her smart home in order to take revenge, and gets involved in a distorted cat-and-mouse game where life and death are at stake. Simone Kessell stars in this action-packed revenge-thriller, another one involving one of these "high-tech homes" that has tons of contraptions. In addition to Kessell, this also stars Joseph Millson, Rachel Adedeji, Daphne Cheung, Rosie Day, and Andrew Howard. Should be no surprise that this looks terrible - not even worth a rental. // Continue Reading ›...

War Blade review – Raf flyboys take on the Nazis in pointless autopilot action
Joseph Millson
The plucky chaps of dear old Blighty on a mission to infiltrate a bunker come up against a barrage of obstacles – not least the question of how this got made

Somewhere, a corner of Great Britain is still mentally fighting the second world war. Nothing else explains how this kind of wanly acted, flyboys-sock-it-to-the-Boche autopilot outing could attract funding in the 2020s. It has the full deck of cliches: the missus back in Blighty popping up in flashback to pep up the beleaguered hero, fortuitously positioned breast-pocket contents foiling death, and ailing squaddies staying behind with their finger on the trigger: “Go! Somebody needs to stay here to make sure this place goes up!”

The plucky hero is Raf Captain Robert Banks (Joseph Millson), ordered to parachute into occupied south-east France to infiltrate a Nazi bunker where a French resistance leader, Pierre Lavigne (Ronan Summers), is possibly being held. The...

“That’s Ridiculous, It’s Stupid!”: Last Kingdom Battle Scene Torn Apart By Medieval Arms Expert
Image
Medieval arms expert Tobias Capwell criticizes The Last Kingdom's Battle of Edington, calling the use of rectangle-shaped shields "ridiculous" and "stupid." Capwell explains that real early Medieval shields were circular and made out of boards that were sealed and glued together, with no openings for air. The Last Kingdom's depiction of battle scenes, including the Battle of Edington, may contain inaccuracies in terms of Medieval arms, according to Capwell.

One battle scene from The Last Kingdom is being torn apart by Medieval arms expert Tobias Capwell. The series, based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories, premiered on BBC Two in 2015 before moving to Netflix three years later. It follows Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), who seeks to reclaim his homeland of Bebbanburg while aiding King Alfred (David Dawson) in his defense of Wessex. In addition to Dreymon and Dawson, The Last Kingdom stars Tobias Santelmann, Emily Cox, Joseph Millson,...

Samantha Barks at an event for The EE British Academy Film Awards (2014)
Bridgerton Cast: Jonathan Bailey’s Best Roles
Samantha Barks at an event for The EE British Academy Film Awards (2014)
In season one, Viscount Bridgerton was less hero than impediment. The eldest Bridgerton son, he assumed responsibility for the matches of his younger siblings Daphne and Colin, and spent the season throwing his weight around – sometimes literally in the case of the punch-up and dual with Daphne’s suitor Simon. Anthony attempted to control everybody else’s marriage responsibilities while refusing to face up to his own. His mistress Siena Rosso eventually made the decision for him, recognising that an opera singer with her past would never be found respectable enough to become a society Viscountess. Siena moved on, and urged Anthony to do the same.

In season two, Anthony’s search for a wife is centre-stage, making actor Jonathan the romantic lead. It’s not the first time the actor has told a love story in his established stage and screen career, which started in his childhood with the Royal Shakespeare Company,...

The Last Kingdom: Who is Aelfric?
Alexander Dreymon in The Last Kingdom (2015)
Warning: contains spoilers for The Last Kingdom seasons one and two.

It’s happening, people. For three seasons, Uhtred of Bebbanburg has wanted to ride north to reclaim his ancestral lands. Destiny though, has always had other plans. Uhtred’s journey home has been interrupted by royal oaths, a witch’s curse, being sold into slavery, marriage, kids and countless battles fought and won. None of them though, are the battle he really wants to fight – against his uncle Aelfric, the man who stole Uhtred’s title and fortress.

With Aelfric (Joseph Millson) poised to return in The Last Kingdom season four – which adapts books seven and eight of Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories saga – here’s a reminder of everything that’s happened so far between him and his nephew Uhtred. Or should that be… Osbert?

‘We were kings here once, boy, kings of all the lands between the...

Gerard Butler at an event for Que justice soit faite (2009)
‘Angel Has Fallen’ Film Review: Gerard Butler Lurches Through Pointless, Silly Threequel
Gerard Butler at an event for Que justice soit faite (2009)
No one has ever accused a Gerard Butler action movie of being too smart, but “Angel Has Fallen” operates on such a level of half-considered logic and improbable motivations that even moderately well-mounted action can’t distract audiences from how dumb it is.

Returning for the third time to the role of Mike Banning, Butler at least addresses the threat of aging out of a surprisingly anemic landscape of C-grade movies that actually open nationwide in theaters, but director and co-writer Ric Roman Waugh (“Snitch”) seems more interested in defying his main character’s reality than substantially exploring it in this political thriller that blends the most overworked and stale ideas from “First Blood,” “The Fugitive” and even “The Bodyguard” into a watery, tasteless, unfulfilling stew.

Three years after the events of “London Has Fallen,” Mike Banning is poised for a promotion to head of the Secret Service under President...

Filming Has Commenced On Season 4 Of The Last Kingdom
Filming has commenced on the fourth season of The Last Kingdom for Netflix, the hit historical drama based on Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling novel series The Saxon Stories.

Alexander Dreymon reprises his role as Uhtred, joined by new cast Stefanie Martini who takes on the role of Eadith, Aethelred’s new love conquest, and Aethelred’s new right-hand man Eardwulf, played by Jamie Blackley.

After the death of Alfred, the alliances between the kingdoms are fractured. Uhtred believes the timing is right to challenge his uncle Aelfric, played by Joseph Millson, and take back his ancestral home, Bebbanburg. However fate shifts in a different direction, leading Uhtred to realize that his destiny is tied to Alfred’s dream of a united land. This, and Uhtred’s feelings for Aethelflaed, drive him back into the politics that threaten to break out into war.

Returning cast includes Ian Hart (Father Beocca), Toby Regbo...

Milo Gibson at the premiere of Hacksaw Ridge
Film Review: ‘All the Devil’s Men’
Milo Gibson at the premiere of Hacksaw Ridge
An opening shot of shirtless Milo Gibson doing sit-ups while hanging from a ceiling bar in a Morocco hotel room raises expectations that “All the Devil’s Men” will be an unwitting exercise in “MacGruber”-ism — 1980s-style turbo machismo run amok. For better or worse, this U.K.-produced action opus doesn’t linger on that extreme end of genre caricature, though it remains hard to take fully seriously. To his credit, writer-director Matthew Hope’s third feature (following not-dissimilar “The Veteran” and zombie horror “The Vanguard”) mostly sidesteps the cheese factor in telling a tale of bullet-riddled skullduggery between mercenaries, CIA agents, and terrorists.

Yet there’s still a tang of C-grade cliché to a movie too obviously trying to pull off global intrigue on a low budget, with a surfeit of alpha-male posturing, hamfisted dialogue, and incessant gunfire ultimately failing to provide sufficient credibility (let alone production values). Resourceful and energetic,...

A Battle-Scarred Mercenary in The War on Terror is on The Hunt in This Trailer For All The Devil's Men
"Either we execute, or a lot of people are going to get killed."

Saban Films and Lionsgate have released the first trailer for a new action-thriller called All The Devil’s Men. I haven’t even heard of this movie until this trailer popped up, but it looks like it could be pretty good if you’re into these kinds of movies.

The movie stars William Fitcher and Milo Gibson, the son of Mel Gibson, and the story follows a team of “hardened military operatives on a relentless manhunt through the backstreets of London. The explosive action-thriller finds a battle-scarred mercenary in the War on Terror who is forced to go to London on a manhunt for a disavowed CIA operative, which leads him into a deadly running battle with a former military comrade and his private army.”

I like William Fitcher and it’s cool to see him take...

Milo Gibson & William Fichtner in First Trailer for 'All The Devil's Men'
"Either we execute, or a lot of people are going to get killed." Saban Films + Lionsgate have released the first official trailer for another action movie we've never heard of before titled All The Devil's Men, which is opening in December if anyone's interested. In the film, a battle-scarred "War on Terror" bounty hunter is forced to go to London on a manhunt for a disavowed CIA operative, which leads him into a deadly running battle with a former military comrade and his private army. The action film stars Milo Gibson, William Fichtner, Sylvia Hoeks, Gbenga Akinnagbe, and Joseph Millson. This looks about as derivative and bland as every other random action movie they've been dumping on us this year. There's so many of these, and none of them ever turn out good. I'd rather tell you to go see Widows instead of this. Have at it anyway. Here's the...
