On June 2, another new era of the decades-long evening news battles began at 6:30 p.m. NBC debuted the first episode of NBC Nightly News with its new anchor, Tom Llamas. He succeeded Lester Holt, who, after a decade behind the Nightly desk, is moving to a role at Dateline.
Aside from the new face, little changed. The studio appeared largely the same, as was the format. That was almost certainly a deliberate choice. After all, when NBC launched its ad campaign for Llamas, it leaned on its history and heritage, and the fact that the anchor has been familiar to NBC News viewers for the past four years, while also referencing Holt’s status as the most trusted news anchor by Americans.
“Legacy isn’t handed down, it’s carried forward. As the world changes, we look for what endures, we look for a constant,” the spot declared, featuring...

A Mickey Mouse marching band, Cowboys cheerleaders and Seth MacFarlane singing — oh my! Last week, Disney, Netflix, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon and YouTube wrapped up their annual upfront presentations to Madison Avenue, leaving advertisers to now face a difficult decision: Where and how to place their bets and allocate their budgets.
That choice will be particularly complicated this year with buyers reevaluating decisions in the face of President Donald Trump’s rapidly-evolving tariff policies. The declining linear TV business is also grappling with more pressure than ever as viewers continue flocking to streaming, a viewership model that’s increasingly popular but has yet to provide the same consistent financial returns that traditional TV did in the past. Add in the appetite around sports and other live events — programming that viewers still prefer consuming live, which benefits buyers — and this year’s presentations felt hungrier than most.

NBC is bringing in a legend from the ’90s when it comes to its upcoming NBA coverage. The brand will be using the AI-generated voice of late narrator Jim Fagan when it comes to league promotion and coverage once the network’s media rights agreement with the league begins in October.
From 1990 to 2002, Fagan’s voice was synonymous with NBC’s coverage of the NBA as he narrated the openers and promotional spots for legendary games and stars like Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant and Hakeem Olajuwon. Though Fagan passed away in 2017, NBC Sports will be bringing the broadcaster back through a partnership with Fagan’s family. In this new iteration, Fagan’s voice will be used to narrate certain select title sequences, show opens and promos for NBC Sports’ basketball coverage.

During the NBA on NBC’s 12 year run from 1990-2002, the broadcasts and promotional spots featured the voice of narrator Jim Fagan, who drove excitement around the games featuring stars like Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, and Hakeem Olajuwon.
NBC lost the NBA rights in 2003, and Fagan passed away in 2017, but when the NBA on NBC returns to the network this fall, his voice will once again be featured in promos, title sequences and show opens, this time teasing stars like Steph Curry, Jason Tatum, and Victor Wembanyama.
NBC says that it is using generative artificial intelligence technology to recreate Fagan’s voice, conjuring up a return to its broadcasts of 25 years ago. Separately NBC Sports also confirmed that it would bring back its iconic “Roundball Rock” theme song, composed by John Tesh.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, the cartoon character Walt Disney created before Mickey Mouse, is finally getting the spotlight with his own Disney+ series. Moreover, a filmmaker with connections to brands like Star Wars and MCU is at the helm: Jon Favreau. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1927 and was featured in 27 animated shorts. However, Universal Pictures, who distributed the cartoons, took control of the character and forced Disney out. This resulted in Disney starting over from scratch, ultimately leading to the creation of Mickey Mouse. In 2006, Disney acquired the trademark of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit by trading the services of Al Michaels as play-by-play announcer on NBC Sunday Night Football to NBCUniversal.
Deadline reports that Favreau, the director of Iron Man and the creator of The Mandalorian, is set to write and produce a Disney+ series based on Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. The...

Tom Brady has won seven Super Bowls, and five Super Bowl Mvp Awards. There is no other NFL player alive who has as much experience in the Big Game as Brady.
But this Sunday Brady will tread new territory, calling Super Bowl Lix from New Orleans from the Fox broadcast booth, capping off his first year as the network’s lead NFL analyst. It’s the biggest TV show in the world, and the biggest challenge yet for the rookie TV talent.
Brady made his Fox debut last summer during a Ufl game, kicking off his debut season on-air. “It feels like it was about 10 years ago, because there’s been such a learning curve,” says Brady, speaking to reporters Wednesday morning.

Major League star “Mr. Baseball” Bob Uecker died at the age of 90 on Thursday, Jan. 16 (per the Milwaukee Brewers X account). The Major League Baseball player, film, and TV star was diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer back in 2023, which he’d been battling in private. Unfortunately, though, the Hall of Fame broadcaster for the Brewers finally succumbed to the disease today, according to his family, who made the following statement (via NBC News):
Even in the face of this challenge, his enthusiasm for life was always present, never allowing his spirit to falter.
Most modern-day movie fans will remember Uecker for his incomparable performance as the hilarious, straight-shooting broadcaster for the Cleveland Indians, Harry Doyle, in the must-see comedy Major League (1989) and its less memorable sequels. However, Uecker also starred in the ABC sitcom Mr. Belvedere, which ran for six seasons (1985-1990), but his road to fame started humbly...

As the results of Election Night 2024 became known, Brian Williams looked to the future. ”Our country is about to change again,” he told viewers of a news special he was hosting on Amazon Prime Video, with a diorama of a highway lane placed behind him. “And life, of course, goes on. Hell, my next gig is to emcee our firehouse annual dinner on Saturday night in New Jersey, my hand to God.”
Williams and others like him may have more to look forward to than hosting community potlucks.
Amazon has been holding exploratory talks about possible news concepts, according to four people familiar with the matter, a sign that the streaming and e-commerce giant sees a chance for news to bolster its economics, even as traditional players in the space are grappling with tougher times. Executives at PGA Tour say they are getting ready for a new era in sports when leagues will need to exercise significantly more control over the content that’s made from the games, matches and tournaments that every media outlet wants to show.
The backer of golf’s most popular events on Wednesday unveiled a new 165,000 square foot production facility, PGA Tour Studios, on its campus in Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida, part of a bid to gain new oversight over thousands of hours of sports content that its top executives believe will only be in more demand in a future dominated by streaming video — and different kinds of media entities that are looking at sports in very different fashion. The new facility is the first new production entity built by PGA Tour since 1997.

After nearly a year of hype, controversy, and anticipation, the Amazon Prime Video original series Beast Games has finally premiered its first season. For Jimmy Donaldson, the 26-year-old North Carolina native who uses the MrBeast moniker across his social channels, Beast Games is an opportunity to produce his biggest-ever spectacles while introducing his brand of content to a new audience.
Some of that promise has been stunted by the negative press Beast Games has received. The show’s production process reportedly left many contestants hungry, exhausted, in pain, and short on needed medications. Though Donaldson has addressed those allegations, a group of Beast Games contestants hit him with a class action lawsuit back in September. Similar accusations have dogged other streaming productions, but some observers argued that Donaldson went too far with his high-pressure situations.
It is in that complicated environment that Donaldson began a multiplatform publicity tour to promote his Amazon Prime Video original.

Walking around ESPN’s sprawling campus in Bristol, Connecticut, visitors will find the sports giant’s mission statement at almost every turn. On walls, in windows, in the cafeteria: “Serving sports fans. Anytime. Anywhere.”
It’s a humble slogan for the biggest brand in sports media, and arguably one of the biggest brands in all of sports, but ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro argues it is “more relevant today than it’s ever been.”
Sports – like the entertainment industry writ large – is undergoing a dramatic, generational transformation, with viewership fragmenting, cable TV declining, and streaming on the rise.

Comcast’s NBC Universal drew an average daily audience of 30.6 million viewers during the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, according to Nielsen data shared by the network on Monday.
The average included NBC’s live and same-day replay coverage of the Opening Ceremony in late July and the Closing Ceremony last Sunday. Specific ratings for the Closing Ceremony were not shared by NBC as of late Monday evening.
The network said its average daily audience — which it reports as the total audience delivery, or Tad — was up 82 percent compared to the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, which were delayed one year due to the international coronavirus health pandemic.
NBC extended its prime-time dominance with 152 consecutive nights of Summer Olympics coverage, with most events tape-delayed due to the difference in time zones between the United States and France.

Documentarian Mark Monroe shared his experience as director of the new Pete Rose documentary, Charlie Hustle & the Matter of Pete Rose in his new uInterview.
Charlie Hustle & the Matter of Pete Rose traces the ascent and subsequent downfall that defined Rose, a star baseball player. In 1989, Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader, Rose, was issued a lifetime ban for his involvement in betting on the sport.
The documentary draws from candid interviews and insightful commentary provided by Rose himself, who desires redemption, although is seemingly hesitant to fully confront the gravity of his transgressions. The series examination of Rose’s life and career serves as a cautionary tale for the audience.

NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock launched with a big bet on the Olympics. In January 2020, in Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center, executives unveiled a plan to use that year’s Tokyo Olympics to help launch Peacock, including streaming the opening and closing ceremonies live before they aired on TV in the evening.
The Covid-19 pandemic, of course, would warp those plans. Peacock still launched in 2020, but when the Tokyo games finally happened the following year, NBCU had pivoted. Peacock would have live coverage of certain events like gymnastics and basketball, paired with some exclusive studio shows. Unfortunately, a confusing interface and some technical glitches marred the company’s plans, as executives now acknowledge.
“Frankly, we didn’t do a very good job for our customers,” said Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBCUniversal Media Group, speaking to reporters once again in Studio 8H. “We didn’t exactly deliver what we said we were going to deliver.

Four years ago, NBCUniversal had a dream. It would officially enter the streaming wars with a new platform that had a silly name and a really good launching pad. Peacock’s Olympics-sized debut was ruined, like so many things, by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 2020 Summer Olympics turned into a lame, mostly spectator-free version of the games in the summer of 2021. Sure, Peacock had the digital rights, but it wasn’t the same. It always has Paris.
For the (on-time) 2024 summer games, Peacock will stream all 5,000+ hours of the Olympics, including every event across 39 sports. For those with decision paralysis, Peacock’s got you.
Peacock is introducing a multi-view screen with panels labeled as medal events, elimination rounds, for first-time Olympians, “Team USA,” etc. Mousing over different panels will automatically switch the audio to the event a user wants to focus on. Before even diving in to the diving (and other) events,...

Major League Baseball icon Pete Rose, focus of a new HBO documentary series, says the gambling scandal that got him banned from the game cost him dearly.
“You have to understand one thing, ladies and gentlemen,” Rose said at a Q&A after the premiere of episode 1 of Charlie Hustle & The Matter of Pete Rose, “gambling cost me a hundred million [dollars]. That’s what I’d have made in baseball if I hadn’t got suspended.”
In 1989, Rose was managing the Cincinnati Reds when Major League Baseball investigated claims he had wagered bets on MLB games, including his own team’s. Bart Giamatti (father of actor Paul Giamatti), then-Baseball Commissioner, issued a lifetime ban from baseball on Rose. That has kept Rose out of the Hall of Fame, even though he is baseball’s all-time hit leader and holder of many other MLB records, including games played and plate appearances.

Al Michaels, whose call of the U.S. hockey team’s Olympics upset over the Ussr is a sports broadcasting milestone, will deliver AI-enhanced daily recaps of the Paris Games this summer on Peacock.
NBCUniversal’s flagship streaming service, which is carrying full coverage of all Olympic events, will present “Your Daily Olympic Recap on Peacock.” The company describes the mobile-focused feature as “a first-of-its-kind, personalized experience complementing NBCUniversal’s comprehensive coverage of the Olympic Games Paris 2024.”
The feature stems from a collaboration with Michaels, the company said, using generative A.I. and A.I. voice synthesis technology. The recap will provide fans with their own customized playlist featuring highlights of the events most relevant to them from the previous day. Each compilation will feature clips from NBCU Paris coverage. A “high-quality A.I. recreation of Michaels’ voice” will provide voiceovers, with the virtual host trained on past appearances by Michaels on NBC.

Al Michaels is going to have a voice in NBCUniversal’s coverage of the Paris Olympics — but he perhaps won’t strike the tone that many might expect.
The veteran sportscaster will deliver personalized recaps of the media company’s coverage, all of it tailored to fans’ specific interests. Each morning, NBC’s Peacock streaming hub will deliver a video summary of the last day of coverage, built out of clips and a high-quality AI re-creation of Michaels’ voice, which was trained using past appearances on NBC and matches his signature way of speaking.
“When I was approached about this, I was skeptical but obviously curious,” said Michaels — presumably the real one — in a prepared statement. “Then I saw a demonstration detailing what they had in mind. I said, ‘I’m in.’”
NBC projects that nearly seven million personalized variations of “Your Daily Olympic Recap on Peacock” could be streamed across the U.

NBC is bringing Al Michaels back for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Or rather, NBC is bringing a version of Al Michaels generated by artificial intelligence to this year’s Games.
The company says that it is turning to generative AI software to re-create the iconic sportscaster’s voice, which will provide customized Olympic recaps for Peacock subscribers during the Olympics. It announced the offering at a press event held at Studio 8H in NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Center headquarters.
The result, which the company is calling “Your Daily Olympic Recap on Peacock,” will see users presented with a highly customized highlight playlist, narrated by Michaels, or at least by an AI voice that sounds eerily like the sportscaster.

The popular team of analysts may not be available on TNT for much longer, as NBC looks poised to steal its NBA package.
Which way is the NBA’s ball set to bounce? Will it carom back to TNT for another decade, or will NBC steal the package of games whose rights are currently owned by Warner Bros. Discovery by making the league an offer it can’t refuse? The latter possibility looks increasingly likely, and if Wbd does lose its NBA rights, one question that many fans will immediately begin to ponder is what will become of the popular “Inside the NBA” team of Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson; arguably the best sports show on television. There are plenty of options available to the group, including the possibility that 2025 is the final time that they appear on TV together.

When Amazon’s Prime Video streams a new “Black Friday” NFL game later this year, viewers won’t be greeted solely by a live match.
The company plans to offer commercials featuring its talent around the event, according to Danielle Carney, who heads up NFL sales for Amazon. During remarks made at an industry conference, Carney envisioned different “talent” being tapped to talk to viewers about possible buying opportunities. “Black Friday,” the day after Thanksgiving, is typically seen as the first day of the U.S. holiday shopping season.
“We can be thoughtful about deals we are showing to those who are tuning in,” Carney said, a possible allusion to the fact that streamers can place ads in front of specific audiences by using data about subscribers as well as consumer information from particular sponsors.

“We can be thoughtful about deals we are showing to those who are tuning in,” Carney said, a possible allusion to the fact that streamers can place ads in front of specific audiences by using data about subscribers as well as consumer information from particular sponsors.
Whether “talent” might involve “Thursday Night Football” analysts like Al Michaels, Kirk Herbstreit or Charissa Thompson...

Baltimore Orioles play-by-play announcer Kevin Brown is back in the announcer’s booth for tonight’s game against Seattle. He’s returning after being banished since late July for allegedly disparaging remarks about the team.
Before his comeback, he issued a statement this afternoon that made things seem like all was forgiven between him and Orioles management. He said reports that he was ousted for his comments were “mischaracterized.”
No one was buying it.
Michael Kay, the New York Yankees play-by-play voice for Yes Network, said Brown’s statement was “like a hostage tape.”
“That was a statement that was obviously vetted by the Orioles and their senior vice president,” Kay added.“I don’t blame Kevin for putting that out there because he didn’t deny what happened. He said, ‘Don’t listen to the noise.’ The noise is true.”
Kay’s statement continues the outrage voiced by others...

The original mascot for the Walt Disney Company was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, not Mickey Mouse. Founded by Walt Disney and his brothers in October 1923, the Walt Disney Company embarked on a journey that would forever shape the entertainment industry. Unfortunately, by 1927, the fledgling studio faced considerable financial challenges. Their groundbreaking and highly profitable animated masterpiece, Snow White, was still a decade away from captivating audiences. The studio found itself in dire straits, desperately seeking a reliable source of income to sustain its operations and fuel its growth.
Enter Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a creation of Walt Disney himself, alongside his talented animator, Ub Iwerks. While Mickey Mouse went on to achieve global fame and became the enduring symbol of Disney, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit's significance cannot be overstated. Oswald's contribution to Disney's early years as a source of income and inspiration underscores the resilience, creativity, and determination that define Disney's enduring legacy.

After WWE’s exclusive negotiating window with current broadcast partners Fox and NBCUniversal closed without a deal recently, another potential suitor is reportedly circling the sports entertainment goliath.
According to the New York Post's Andrew Marchand, while NBCU and Fox remain the favorites for WWE’s “Monday Night Raw” and “Friday Night Smackdown,” respectively, a new suitor is angling to swoop in and take some wrestling content for themselves — Disney, and specifically its cable network FX. Disney acquired FX during its purchase of 21st Century Fox back in 2019, so it no longer has any connection to Fox as a broadcast entity, despite the name.
FX has dabbled with live sports content in recent months due to scripted programming leaving the network and heading to streaming services. The network aired live XFL football games and could now be in play to air one of WWE’s flagship programs should they look to jump ship.

With 23 seasons, nine victories and an unquantifiable quantity of schtick under his cowboy hat, Og Voice coach Blake Shelton plopped down in his red swivel chair for the last time Tuesday night to find out whether his team had brought him one more win for the road. And, based on the results of the polls that followed TVLine’s recap of the Top 5’s performances, the sing-off’s Goat would be raising a glass to celebrate rather than drown his sorrows: Grace West had surged to the lead over Team Niall Horan’s Gina Miles.

Directors making war movies often pass up the Cold War, because it didn't actually involve any major battles; it was more of a psychological game where both sides - the capitalist countries and the communist states - would try to one-up each other in terms of pride and achievements while spreading lies and propaganda about their enemies, gathering intelligence through acts of espionage, and funding small wars known as surrogate or "proxy wars." The conflict lasted from the end of the Second World War in 1945 to the fall of the Ussr in 1991 allowing for a wide variety of Cold War movies to explore the era.
The decades keep marching on, opening the gap between the Cold War and the present day, and filmmakers keep making movies about it. They range from the typical spy thrillers to rousing sports dramas, from the beginning of the conflict itself to present-day movies. Some...
