Haim ‘I Quit’ Review: Treading an Uncharacteristically Rocky Road
Image
“Can I have your attention, please?” goes the opening line of “Gone,” the first track on Haim’s fourth studio album, I Quit. It feels like a statement of intent, as the album see Danielle, Alana, and Este Haim leaning into their pop tendencies on their most radio-friendly album to date.

Lead single “Relationships,” for one, comes armed with a breezy, instantly memorable pop hook and Instagram-ready refrain: “When an innocent mistake/Turns into 17 days/Fucking relationships.” Elsewhere, “All Over Me” alternately takes its cues from country-pop, which is currently seeing a resurgence, and Midnights-era Taylor Swift.

Across the album’s 15 tracks, though, the sister trio seems conflicted as to whether they want to fully embrace a safer mainstream approach or follow their bolder instincts. The aforementioned “Gone”—which is based around a sample of George Michael’s beloved “Freedom! ’90” that an accompanying press release hilariously suggests is some kind...

The album of the summer? Haim scores strong reviews for ‘sturdy’ and ‘animated’ record ‘I Quit’
Image
Reviews are in for Haim's fourth album, I Quit, and the critics are largely celebrating the further evolution of the sisters' sound, which pulls from a wide variety of references as the band examines the things in life that are better left behind.

Paste's Sam Rosenberg raved about the next phase in Haim's growth, writing, "Further flexing the genre-bending path they forged on 2020’s eclectic Women in Music Pt. III, I quit is perhaps the most animated and unbothered Haim have ever sounded. The record is their longest to date, but rarely does it lag, holding a steady momentum across its 15 tracks with sneakily poignant lyrics and extremely catchy, hook-heavy instrumentation."

And while most reviews from the major music outlets are overall enthused about the latest offering from Danielle, Este, and Alana, consistency issues among the album's robust 15 tracks were a common critique.

"As I understand it, I quit is...

Image
In the 2019 video for “Summer Girl,” Haim walk around their native Los Angeles, shedding layers of clothing. Miley Cyrus Says She Knows What Upcoming 12-Track Experimental Album “Feels Like”
Image
Miley Cyrus premiered her Something Beautiful visual album for a packed audience at New York’s Beacon Theatre as part of the 2025 Tribeca Festival.

But Cyrus, who just released her Something Beautiful audio recording last week, with the visual album set to come out next week, is already looking to the future.

At an album release party last week at the Chateau Marmont, Cyrus teased that Something Beautiful is merely “the appetizer” for a “an extremely experimental” upcoming album.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter before the Something Beautiful visual album premiere, Cyrus shared a little more about what to expect from this future release, which she said would likely be 12 tracks.

“And I think I know what those at least feel like and that’s what I started out with this album too where it wasn’t necessarily about the sound first or even the look or the vision — it...

David Fincher and the genre-bending return of ‘Love, Death + Robots’
Image
“For my money, it's like Love, Death + Robots should be anything. Anything that you can't figure out where else it goes,” legendary filmmaker David Fincher mused about the unconventional, sci-fi/cyberpunk-flavored Netflix (mostly) animated anthology series. It’s as apt a description as any for the ambitious, experimental, and genre-bending project, now launching its fourth season.

“Creativity happens on the fringe,” said Fincher — the director behind boundary-pushing cinematic classics like Seven, Fight Club, The Social Network, Gone Girl, and Zodiac. Speaking on stage at the Love, Death + Robots season premiere at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, he was joined by fellow executive producer Tim Miller (Deadpool) and supervising producer Jennifer Yuh Nelson (Kung Fu Panda 2 & 3). “It always does, and it always takes somebody — it has to be these weird flyers out there — to inform where the industry is going to go. So we're just going to be out there.

Boonie Bears: Future Reborn review – kiddie Chinese eco-fable is like Mad Max on mushrooms
George Michael
The ursine protagonists are largely relegated to fart-gag sidekicks in this phoned-in attempt at a dystopian sci-fi

When George Michael recorded Careless Whisper, there can be no doubt his ultimate ambition for it would have been to soundtrack a garish animated sequence in which two anthropomorphic bears gambol through a prairie of giant fungus experiencing ecstatic visions as hallucinogenic spores rain down on them. Such is the frantic way of this Chinese cartoon franchise, as relentless and exhausting as ever in its 11th feature-film instalment. Five minutes in, before the credits, it has crammed in a post-apocalyptic prologue, oodles of eco-babble, a time-travelling tyke and an avalanche.

This latest one jumps on the fungal-panic bandwagon: Saylor (voiced by Nicola Vincent in the English-language version) has nipped back 100 years to locate the original spores at the root of a pestilence that has eradicated most of life on Earth. It turns out...

AI Brings Deceased Celebrities, Including Suzanne Somers, Back to Life, Creating Multi-Billion Dollar Industry
Image
The entertainment industry is witnessing a transformative shift as artificial intelligence (AI) technology enables the resurrection of deceased celebrities, turning their legacies into lucrative enterprises.

New AI-generated digital replicas of late stars include Suzanne Somers and George Michael.

Companies such as Hollo and Realbotix have collaborated to create a synthetic version of Somers designed to emulate her voice, personality and facial expressions. The AI-driven likeness is not merely a tribute but is intended for active participation in new projects, including potential appearances in reboots of classic shows like Three’s Company.

A significant legal development facilitating this phenomenon is California’s A.B. 1836, which came into effect on January 1, 2025. This law expands post-mortem rights to encompass AI-generated digital replicas, granting estates greater control over the use of a celebrity’s likeness after death.

While initially aimed at preventing unauthorized deepfakes, the legislation inadvertently paves the way for estates to monetize these digital personas extensively.

Elton John songs: 25 greatest hits ranked worst to best
Image
If Sir Elton John's career had only spanned the 1970s, he would still be a music legend, an icon of glam and progressive rock. Fortunately, he forged on, segueing into each new era of rock and branching into film and Broadway with comparable success and his signature aplomb and style. We've undertaken a nearly impossible task -- narrowing a huge catalogue of memorable compositions down to the 25 best.

John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947, and showed an affinity for playing the piano at a young age. In 1967, he answered an ad for songwriters and met Bernie Taupin, which led to a long and successful collaboration, with Taupin writing lyrics to which John composed music. It took a few years of struggling, but in 1970 they had their first top ten hit with "Your Song." In 1972, "Honky Chateau" became his first of seven consecutive number one albums in a three-year period.

George Michael’s Life-Changing Act Of Generosity Revealed By His Backing Singer
Image
George Michael’s many acts of generosity, often conducted under condition of anonymity, have come to light since the star’s death in 2016.

Now, his backing singer Shirley Lewis has revealed that she was also the beneficiary of his great kindness, when she found herself struggling financially.

Lewis, who was married at the time to Bros drummer Luke Goss told The Mirror newspaper that she had been worrying about where she woud live with her daughter and had sold her watch for £5,000 but was left frantic when the envelope of cash went missing.

She told the newspaper:

“I was talking to George on the phone and suddenly burst into tears. He asked what was wrong and I told him my husband and I were in a really bad place and I’d lost some cash, and he said he was going to give me some money and hung up. The...

Robbie Williams Fun Facts: Get To Know The Singer & ‘Better Man’ Star
Image
Reading Time: 5 minutes

Robbie Williams is British pop royalty, and he was hoping to score a worldwide hit with his recent biopic Better Man.

Robbie’s movie may not have been a box office smash, but steadily drumming up global word of mouth, even from people who have never heard of Take That. While the film is a traditional biopic in that it tells the singer’s life story, it also comes with one very bizarre caveat.

Instead of an actor playing Robbie (or the man even playing himself), the singer is portrayed as a CGI anthropomorphic chimpanzee, making it seem more like a Planet of the Apes film rather than Walk the Line.

Netflix is dropping 8 movies and series this week
Image
It is difficult to be a fan of a single streaming service sometimes. Netflix brings us a lot of greatness, and if it didn't, it would go out of business. But it does its job well, and we keep paying every month so that we get to see new goodies.

Unfortunately, we often have to say goodbye to greatness as well. Lucky for us, the series and movies leaving Netflix in the second week of March are not all fantastic. That leaves us room to talk about the ones that are highly entertaining.

And let's be real, though things might be leaving your favorite streamer, they are likely to find new streaming homes soon. We don't have that information, of course, as we only talk Netflix stuff here, but you can check our brethren and sisterthren at Show Snob, and that might have that information. That is at least a free plug for them.

Image
Halina Reijn's 2024 film Babygirlis one of recent cinema's most buzzy and talk-about movies. Whether it's Nicole Kidman holding eye contact while downing a glass of milk, Harris Dickinson's sexy swaying to George Michael, or raving in business casual attire, Babygirl has got audiences talking. Starring Nicole Kidman as a woman who finds unexpected sexual pleasure in a relationship with her domineering but much younger intern (Dickinson), Babygirl is fascinating and sexy in many ways. There are twists and turns that make it a great time at the movies with a crowd. But there's a piece of backstory in Babygirl concerning Kidman's character Romy and her childhood growing up in cults that is unnecessary and almost derails the entire premise.

Sundance Review: Plainclothes is a Riveting Paranoia Thriller About Coming Out
Image
Set years before George Michael’s arrest and inspired by the bathroom raids that provoked a moral panic in Mansfield, Ohio, in 1963, Carmen Emmi’s Syracuse-set thriller Plainclothes offers a unique twist on the coming-out genre. Cruising the food court and men’s room at a local mall, young undercover officer Lucas (Tom Blyth) lures men into stalls, getting them to expose themselves before they’re taken down by a cop (John Bedford Lloyd) who is not above slapping a fellow officer on the butt in the gym, a thread the film never quite pulls fully at.

Told in a non-linear structure, the thriller oscillates between two parallel timelines: one focusing on a New Year’s Eve party with Lucas’ controversial uncle after the death of his father; the other as he conducts police work at the mall. In the earlier timeline, Lucas becomes infatuated with Andrew (Russell Tovey), a...

‘Babygirl’ Movie Ending Explained & Symbolisms: What Does The Last Scene Mean?
Image
Babygirl’s ending had a lot of people disappointed because it seemed like it didn’t have a real point to make. The Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson starrer has been on everyone’s radar since its inception. The adult thriller tells the story of a CEO who finds herself in an interesting relationship with an intern at work. The risqué film subverts the trope of age-gap relationships, specifically when the women are older and the men are apparent “vulnerable” young lads. In Babygirl, Samuel isn’t on a quest to learn his deepest, darkest desires; neither is he the one who is strategically groomed into being a “sub.” It is clear right from the start who is driving this car and who is in the passenger seat, ready to jump out any second. To many, Babygirl may simply feel like a film about physical intimacy. No, scratch that; for some,...

“Nosferatu: A Bleak Bumpy Ride Through A Gothic Nightmare” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Even if horror is your scene—it is certainly not mine—Nosferatu, which is one of the most talked-about shiver givers in recent times, please be cautioned: Nosferatu is a bit of a selfimportant slog. It is like one of those streetside pamphleteers who think they are changing the world. But in actuality they are merely making noise that feels urgent but is just heated humbug.

All through this bleak and burly slow-burn drama I felt a sense of mounting tension. But there is little to back up the sense of foreboding. The ostensibly Big Moments end in a whimper, sometimes literally. There is an episode where the female protagonist Ellen(Lily-Rose Depp, Johnny Depp’s Daughter) goes into a trance-like fit with loud moaning gasping, as if she has just watched the uncut version of Pushpa.

The sequence builds up to a crescendo and then simply collapses in exhaustion.

‘Plainclothes’ Review: Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey Smolder and Sweat as Closeted Gay Men in Bristling Police Entrapment Drama
Image
A movie all too palpably real for those of us who can remember years of shame, fear and secrecy, Plainclothes follows a young cop assigned to a sting operation, arresting gay men cruising for sex in a mall in Syracuse, New York. His willingness to pose as bait dissolves when he starts facing his own sexual identity while getting obsessive about a similarly closeted hook-up. First-time writer-director Carmen Emmi’s aesthetically overworked use of low-grade video and distorted sound is intrusive, but very fine performances from Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey keep you glued to this sexy, sad, authentically gritty drama.

The strains of Omc’s “How Bizarre” coming over the speakers in a shopping mall instantly position the story in the mid ‘90s. A young cop, Lucas (Blyth), sits in the food court, serving as the tasty bait for gay men on the prowl. An exchange of eye contact,...

‘Mr Pikes’: Life Of Tony Pike, The “Hugh Hefner Of Ibiza”, Set For Feature Adaption From ‘Trainspotting’ Scribe Irvine Welsh
Image
Exclusive: Scottish author Irvine Welsh, best known for writing the original 1993 Trainspotting novel, has teamed with screenwriter Dean Cavanagh to write a biopic based on the life of notorious Ibiza hotelier Tony Pike.

Pike, who died of Cancer in 2019, earned notoriety in the early 1980s after establishing the Pikes Hotel in Ibiza. The hotel, which occupied a former rural farmhouse, quickly became a hedonistic haven for celebrities and musicians. Frequent visitors included Freddie Mercury, Princess Margaret, and George Michael, who shot the music video for Wham!’s “Club Tropicana” at the hotel. Pike also has a cameo in the video. Pike’s appetite for the party life once famously led Boy George to dub him the “Hugh Hefner of Ibiza”, which the hotelier often tried to play down.

“There’s a big difference between Hugh Hefner and me in that he has used women to make money,” Pike told local...

‘Plainclothes’ Review: A Closeted Cop Is Tempted by the Gay Men He’s Tailing in Steamy ’90s-Set Psychodrama

These days, gay men can arrange sex by a smartphone app as easily as ordering a pizza. But back in the ’90s, when “Plainclothes” takes place, such trysts not only had to be coordinated in person, but could be punished by arrest. Audiences of a certain age and demographic almost certainly remember the risk and fear (not to mention the illicit excitement) of the hunt, back when undercover police monitored public “tearooms” for lewd behavior. In writer-director Carmen Emmi’s “we’ve come a long way, baby” debut, the cops take it one step further, luring frisky men into exposing themselves.

But what if the officer in question was closeted and one of these strangers slipped him his phone number? That’s the intriguing — if credulity-stretching — premise of “Plainclothes,” which casts Tom Blyth (the outlaw star of Epix’s “Billy the Kid”) as Lucas, a second-generation cop with all kinds of identity issues.

One Direction singer Liam Payne will be given a special tribute at the Brit Awards, according to UK media reports.

The Sun newspaper’s weekend exclusive asserts that producers of the annual awards ceremony celebrating the best of the British pop industry are planning to remember the late singer following his death in October 2024.

And iI quotes a music industry source suggesting that the remaining members of the band – Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik – could reunite on stage for the first time since their split a decade ago.

The Sun quotes the source saying: “The tribute to Liam at this year’s awards show has caused a real buzz and speculation that the remaining One Direction bandmates could finally come back together again on stage.

“It would be an entirely fitting way to honor Liam and talks are already under way about how to make this segment of the Brits unforgettable.

Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey Are Undercover Lovers in Sundance’s Sexy, Dangerous ‘Plainclothes’ — Watch an Exclusive Clip
Image
Like “Cruising” for the 1990s New Queer Cinema set, Carmen Emmi’s feature debut “Plainclothes” features the most emotionally (and physically) naked performance yet from rising British star Tom Blyth. He plays Lucas, a rookie cop somewhere outside Syracuse assigned to post up in one of those bland, sad Malls of America, hoping to lure men into a toilet stall — and into exposing themselves or more.

This clandestine, bait-and-catch operation was the sort of problematic police procedure that got people like George Michael into trouble for lewd conduct. Here, it forms the basis of a thriller — and one with shades of romance when Lucas’ own secret attraction to men starts overtaking him. And especially in the form of Russell Tovey, sparking a hesitant hook-up and possible romance after Lucas catches Andrew (Tovey) in the bathroom, only to end up lingering too long.

IndieWire shares an exclusive clip for the film in the video above.

Harris Dickinson’s ‘Babygirl’ Dance Isn't Just a Thirst Trap
Image
Weeks after Babygirl's Christmas release, a key scene was subjected to social media frenzy. Halfway through the erotic drama, when Romy (Nicole Kidman) is fully engrossed in her heated affair with an intern at her robotics company, the latter delivers a sexy dance to George Michael's hit, "Father Figure." With a whiskey in hand and subtle, on-beat movements, Samuel (Harris Dickinson) performs for Romy, as she sits down and takes in the view.

‘Babygirl’: Why Samuel Dances to George Michael’s ‘Father Figure’
Image
It’s one of the most memorable scenes in “Babygirl,” a visual, musical big screen moment that has taken on a life of its own on TikTok: A shirtless Samuel (Harris Dickinson) sensually dances to George Michael’s 1987 “Father Figure” for his older lover Romy (Nicole Kidman), the married CEO at the robotics company where he interns. While on a recent episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, writer/director Halina Reijn broke down the numerous decisions and inspirations that went into creating the scene, including her own experience as an actress stripping on camera and her desire to play with gender roles. As to the choice of the song itself, Reijn explained it was tied to the central question she posed to herself when she sat down to write “Babygirl.”

“For this movie my question was if it would be possible to love and accept all the different layers of myself,...

Babygirl Is Not The Erotic Thriller I Expected It To Be
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Babygirl!

I saw 2024's Babygirl, but after viewing it, I am surprised that it is not the erotic thriller that I expected it to be. Babygirl is one of the most critically-acclaimed films of 2024, with the film being of note due to the awards buzz surrounding Nicole Kidman's performance as well as the film's highly sexual storyline. The trailer and other marketing materials for Babygirl set my expectations that the film would be a serious erotic thriller with dark themes and a dramatic story, but as it turns out, Babygirl subverted by expectations.

Upon the announcement of Babygirl, I couldn't wait for the film, as there was tons that I was particularly excited about. Nicole Kidman's other erotic thriller, Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, is one of my favorite films. On top of that, I loved Bodies Bodies Bodies, the previous film from Babygirl director Halina Reijn.

Robbie Williams' 'Better Man' Becomes 2025's First Box Office Bomb
Image
A music biopic that showcases its subject as a CGI monkey was always going to be a tough sell, but kudos to the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man for taking big swings. They're the kind of big swings that weren't universally celebrated over the weekend because, despite earning solid reviews for its originality, Better Man has become the first official box office disappointment of 2025.

Per Collider, Better Man opened to a mere $1.05 million from 1,291 locations, resulting in a disastrous $813 per-screen average. For comparison’s sake, Pamela Anderson's The Last Showgirl, playing in just 870 theaters to get its run started, opened to $1.4 million and had a per-screen average of $1,673. If there is some good news to be had here, those who have seen Better Man seem to love it as it sits with a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, coming out ahead of its impressive 88% score from critics.

‘Babygirl’ Filmmaker Halina Reijn Teases Next Film for A24: ‘Themes of Violence, Masculinity’
Image
Halina Reijn is clearly in the A24 business. The Dutch actress-turned-director made her English-language feature debut for the studio with 2022’s “Bodies Bodies Bodies” starring Rachel Sennott, Pete Davidson, and Myha’la and also re-teamed with them for the recently released erotic thriller “Babygirl.” As per Variety, Reijn is working on the script for her next project and, while on the red carpet at the Palms Spring International Film Awards, suggested A24 may be involved once again.

“I’m obsessed with them. I feel they’re like a cult. You can’t just get out of it,” Reijn told IndieWire’s Vincent Perella while on the Golden Globes red carpet. In teasing details for the project, she added, “I think it’s going to be really different. I like to go into themes of violence, masculinity.”

Reijn was in attendance at the Globes to support “Babygirl” nominee Nicole Kidman, who last...

Here Are All the Songs in ‘Babygirl’
Image
“Babygirl” is here, and it’s not just a sexy, surprisingly funny film, it’s got a fantastic soundtrack, too. From “Bodies Bodies Bodies” director Halina Reijn, the erotic dramedy stars Nicole Kidman as an accomplished CEO and loving family woman who risks it all for a power-play affair with a young intern (Harris Dickinson) at her company.

From Christmas parties to Edm night clubs to a private dance set to George Michael, “Babygirl” tracks a lot of their affair through the music, creating a great soundtrack in the process. So much so that “Father Figure” was specifically namedropped in the first draft of the script. It also features the first new song from Sky Ferreira in two years — and her first independent release since Capitol Records dropped her in 2023 — with the film’s original track, “Leash.”

Here’s your guide to all the songs on the “Babygirl” soundtrack:

On Friday nights (and holidays!), IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

For December 2024, we’re celebrating the end of the year with a stocking full of Strange Holiday TV Specials and Seasonal Midnight Movies.

First, read the Bait: a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film. Then, try the Bite: a breakdown of the movie’s ending, impact, and any other spoilers you’d want.

The Bait: This Christmas, Give Yourself the Gift of Zero Irony

When “Last Christmas” hit theaters shortly before the pandemic, critics roasted the holiday rom com at such high heat they made “chestnuts on an open fire” sound chilly. That’s a shame, but maybe the best thing that could have happened to Universal’s all-time ode to cinematic whiplash. Five years later, it’s a new cult classic in the making — perfect for midnight,...

The Golden Bachelorette: "Last Christmas!": Joan & Chock's Lives Are So Different This Year (Their First Christmas Might Make Them Long For The Past)
Image
The Golden Bachelorette stars Joan Vassos and Chock Chapple are engaged, and as they enjoy their first Christmas together, they probably get pulled back into the past. At their ages, they've lived a lot of life, and special occasions could trigger them, reminding both of them of all they've lost. While the two seem very compatible, they each had very long-lasting relationships. Sadly, Joan and Chock lost their partners to cancer. During the holidays, the new duo, who are planning to live in three different places, must find it hard to deal with all of their memories.

In particular, Joan may be sensitive. In Wham's hit song, "Last Christmas," George Michael sings,

Last Christmas I gave you my heart/the very next day you gave it away.

However, Joan's late husband, John Vassos, never betrayed her. He passed away four years ago, which broke her heart. At Thanksgiving, she was emotional,...

Wham! Makes Musical History, As George Michael’s ‘Last Christmas’ Tops UK Christmas Chart
Image
Wham!’s festive song Last Christmas never got to number one in the year of its release 1984, but it has scored a historical first, becoming the first track to occupy the festive chart’s top slot for a second consecutive year.

40 years after its debut, the song penned by George Michael beat off competition by Mariah Carey, Gracie Abrams, Tom Grennan and Ariana Grande to top the chart. This follows its success in reaching the same position last year, following a campaign by Wham! fans.

Michael’s bandmate Andrew Ridgeley told the BBC of his pleasure that his late friend’s talent had been recognised: “He would have been utterly delighted [that] his fabulous Christmas composition has become such a classic, almost as much a part of Christmas as mince pies, turkey and pigs in blankets.

“It’s testament to a really wonderful Christmas song that in a lot of people...

The Secret to Harris Dickinson’s Seductive ‘Babygirl’ Performance? Pretending He Didn’t Know Anything About Co-Star Nicole Kidman
Image
When Harris Dickinson first appears in Halina Reijn’s sexy, slippery “Babygirl,” he’s got a dog treat in his hand and a nervous twinkle in his eye. As he charms an angry pup, a terrified and slightly thrilled Nicole Kidman watches just down the street, now safe from the snapping maw of the previously out-of-control canine. The implication is clear: here is someone who can soothe even the wildest of creatures. Perhaps that can extend to Kidman’s Romy?

She — and the audience — find out the answer soon enough. In Reijn’s erotic thriller, Romy’s tightly controlled existence as both a high-powered CEO and a loving wife and mother is thrown into complete disarray by the arrival of alluring intern Samuel (Dickinson). As the pair embark on a kinky, sex-positive Bdsm relationship, both of them open themselves to just about everything: pleasure, pain, ruin, George Michael dance parties,...
