Jimmy and Stiggs Review: An Absolutely Bonkers Splatterfest
Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Eli Roth in La Prophétie de l'horloge (2018)
Plot: A shitstorm of bad news sends out of work filmmaker Jimmy spiraling into an out of control bender in which he claims to have been abducted by aliens. Fearing they’ll come back, he contacts his old friend Stiggs to help him gear up for war.

Review: If there’s one horror movie I’ve been looking forward to all year, practically causing me to bounce with excitement, it’s Jimmy and Stiggs. Joe Begos‘ latest has always promised to be a splatterfest of epic proportions and, with Eli Roth’s Horror Section Studios acquiring it, all signs pointed towards a potential cult classic. And I’m happy to say that it’s everything you would expect from it and more, providing an absolute cacophony of chaos. I loved every minute of it.

Writer/director Joe Begos stars as Jimmy Lang, an out-of-work filmmaker who is in the midst...

Interview: Eli Roth and Joe Begos Talk Jimmy and Stiggs and The Horror Section
Joe Begos
Are you familiar with Joe Begos? If not, I highly recommend Christmas Bloody Christmas – check it out immediately. The writer/director/actor is about as close to rock and roll frights as you can get in the modern age. I was lucky, I was able to see his holiday horrors on the big screen. And thanks to Eli Roth and his crowd-funded studio, The Horror Section, frights are going to a wide audience.

Bego’s Jimmy and Stiggs will be hitting 1,500 theatres on August 15. The new flick brings back a little bit of what Peter Jackson brought in Bad Taste and Dead Alive. You can even find some Raimi Evil Dead action. Starring Begos and Matt Mercer, alongside a bunch of aliens, Jimmy and Stiggs is hilariously gory. It’s the kind of movie that you will need to see with an engaged, raucous crowd on opening weekend. Vicious, brutal,...

Eli Roth Says Joe Begos' Horror Project 'Jimmy & Stiggs' Will "Mess Some People Up"
Image
Eli Roth, the horror filmmaker most famous for movies like Cabin Fever and Thanksgiving, has decided to give underrated filmmaker Joe Begos a chance to play his latest film on the big screen. The movie is titled Jimmy & Stiggs, and upon a screening, Roth was so impressed that he made it a personal mission to plan a theatrical release. The Hostel director says that Jimmy & Stiggs stands out because it "has such life, and it is going to mess some people up."

Judging by Begos' previous filmography, Roth may have a strong point, as Jimmy & Stiggs is the latest in a career filled with horror entries so graphic that they're too intense for those with a weak stomach. Per the report by IndieWire, the duo was present at a Q&a session after an early screening of Jimmy & Stiggs. The event was the result of Roth's...

10 Years of ‘Critical Role’: ‘We Are Never Going Away’
Image
Grog Strongjaw, a hulking barbarian warrior who once helped save the realm by splitting a terrible dragon’s skull in twain with a mighty cleave of his axe, did not expect to find himself dancing, doing the worm for the amusement of a fiendish emcee. As he writhed his body on the stage in front of a sold-out arena crowd, it’s fair to say that Travis Willingham didn’t expect this either. He and the rest of the cast of Critical Role were the ones who were actually dancing,...

‘Jimmy & Stiggs’ vs. the Gore Wars — Eli Roth Backs Joe Begos and Neon Aliens as His Answer to ‘Terrifier 3’
Image
A powerful shot of cinematic ipecac, “Jimmy & Stiggs” is meticulously disgusting. The neon-splattered alien abduction flick took its filmmaker, star, and practical effects wizard Joe Begos four years and roughly $200,000 to make. Genre impresario Eli Roth loved it instantly, and after launching the Horror Section earlier this spring, his new label acquired “Jimmy & Stiggs” for a wide release. On August 15, Begos’ obsessive and bizarre sci-fi nightmare will play in 1,500 theaters.

“You can’t fake authenticity and passion,” said Roth during a recent Q&a — moderated by this reporter, Alison Foreman. “A lot of times horror movies get dismissed because they’re horror movies. This is a work of art. This is David Lynch when he spent six years making ‘Eraserhead,’ or Sam Raimi when he spent years making ‘Evil Dead.’ You can’t fake what these guys did.”

Following a special early screening of “Jimmy & Stiggs” on...

It’s also the first film being released under Eli Roth’s new horror label, The Horror Section.

"Like They Live meet Dead Alive on speed!" Holy whoa! File this trailer under "Omfg!" The Horror Section has launched an official trailer for a totally batshit crazy indie horror film titled Jimmy and Stiggs, the latest creation from the mad mind of horror filmmaker Joe Begos. This premiered at Beyond Fest last year and has played at other genre fests. Practical FX galore in this aliens vs men neon horror movie. Here's a description: "Constantly high & drunk Jimmy gets a visit from some weird little grey men with big eyes & spiky needles. Jimmy and Stiggs trailer: Joe Begos sci-fi horror film coming from Eli Roth’s The Horror Section
Joe Begos
When Joe Begos‘s holiday horror film Christmas Bloody Christmas was released back in December of 2022 (you can read an 8/10 review from our own JimmyO Here), the writer/director let it be known that he was hoping to make two sequels to that movie. But first, he intended to wrap up a horror project he had been working on since the early days of the Covid pandemic lockdowns: an alien invasion horror movie that he stars in, because the alternative would have been to cast someone who was in the Screen Actors Guild, which would have added thousands to the budget. Now we know that his sci-fi horror project is called Jimmy and Stiggs, and it’s going to be released by The Horror Section, a company that was just launched by genre regular Eli Roth a few months ago. The Horror Section is teaming up with Iconic Events to...

Unrated ‘Jimmy and Stiggs’ Trailer Promises 50,000 Feet of Blood Soaked 16mm Film
Image
The first theatrical release from Eli Roth’s new label The Horror Section is Jimmy and Stiggs, the latest blast of insanity from director Joe Begos (Bliss, Christmas Bloody Christmas).

Jimmy and Stiggs will be released Unrated in theaters on August 15, 2025.

Check out the trailer below, debuted by Collider this afternoon.

Roth tells the outlet, “I realized that now with our new label I can distribute these incredible films, wide, in theaters for fans to experience with a screaming crowd on the big screen, unrated. I also liked the idea of people who have never seen a low budget 16mm insane splatterfest just walking in thinking it’s some normal movie and having their minds melted.”

The indie horror film “follows a down-on-his-luck filmmaker (Begos) who claims he was abducted by aliens, vowing to bring them down alongside his friend (Matt Mercer).”

“Rarely does a film stop me in my...

'The Dead Thing' Trailer Tackles the Terrors of Dating on Shudder

Dating is brutal, right? In Shudder's upcoming The Dead Thing, it's also terrifying. The streaming platform has now released a trailer for the upcoming horror outing. Directed by Elric Kane (best known for hosting the podcasts Pure Cinema and Colors of the Dark), the indie thriller follows a young woman named Alex (Blu Hunt), who is disillusioned with dating until she meets a charming man named Kyle (Ben Smith-Petersen). This Dungeons & Dragons Hero-Villain Duo Could Be The Next Batman & Joker If A Live-Action TV Show Happens
Image
There has long been talk of a Dungeons & Dragons live-action TV show, but one hero-villain duo tips the scales in its favor, offering fantasy its next Batman and Joker. Paramount dropped their D&d TV show in the wake of the box office disappointment of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, but the concept is being shopped around. As such a wide franchise, Dungeons & Dragons has corners that not even all D&D fans know about, ranging from a tabletop game and video game to movies and books. But Dark Elf Drizzt Do'Urden and his arch-nemesis need little introduction.

Drizzt Do'Urden originated in R.A. Salvatore's The Icewind Dale book trilogy in 1988 but has gone on to feature in 39 books that have a semi-cult following. He also features in the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance video game, and is a playable character in the popular Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition game.

D&d's Surprising Update To This Classic Monster Shows How They're Changing For New 2024 Rules
Image
A change to two classic Dungeons & Dragons monsters showcases how the game's designers are making monsters feel more unique in the new ruleset. October 29 marks the release of Scions of Elemental Evil, a new mini-adventure made for organized play at stores and conventions. The new adventure will send players into the infamous Temple of Elemental Evil to face off against an Elemental Evil fanatic and her followers. Scions of Elemental Evil will also serve to highlight some of the upcoming rules changes in Dungeons & Dragons, including in the upcoming Dungeon Master's Guide.

Scions of Elemental Evil also uses several updated creature statblocks from next year's revised Monster Manual. D&d's designers have previously said that they've looked to update various monsters to bring them in line with their Challenge Ratings, especially in terms of their various abilities and attacks. Many of these changes are rebalanced attack damage and more flavorful abilities.

"This Is Actually Bad Advice": How DMs Like Matt Mercer Shaped D&d's 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide
Image
The primary architects behind the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide are designers working at Dungeons & Dragons publisher Wizards of the Coast, but they're not the only ones who had a hand in the new book. In honing advice for dungeon masters, WotC turned to some external creatives, including some celebrities famous for their skill at running the game. From Critical Role host Matt Mercer to Daredevil actress Deborah Ann Woll, the influence of outside DMs played an important role.

In an interview with Screen Rant, D&d Creative Director Chris Perkins described the process of consulting with outside dungeon masters, in which Wizards of the Coast would send out chapters on Dm advice along with a list of questions. Consultants would read the chapters with those questions in mind and provide feedback, ranging from "this is great" to "this is actually bad advice if you're a neurodivergent Dm." Senior Game Designer James Wyatt...

The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 3 Finale Had 1 Perfect Moment That Reunited The Team (Even Percy)
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for the finale of The Legend of Vox Machina season 3.

In The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 finale, there was a poignant and touching moment among the action that brought the whole team together again, even with Percy gone. Percy has been an integral member of the team, with his story driving the plot of season 1's story and his blossoming relationship with Vex being a growing central focus in season 3. Of all the members of Vox Machina, he's one of the hardest to replace. Yet that's exactly where The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 left both Vox Machina and the audience after episode 7 when Percy was shot and killed by Anna Ripley, in a death that seemed more than permanent.

The loss of Percy understandably rattled the members of Vox Machina, the first one of their comrades and friends to permanently fall in a...

‘Jimmy and Stiggs’ Is a Neon-Soaked, Cocaine-Fueled Alien Assault [Review]
Image
2020’s Covid-19 pandemic was a weird, isolating time, particularly for filmmakers and natural storytellers. Joe Begos’ Jimmy and Stiggs isn’t about the pandemic or even set during that period, but it’s a movie that was born out of this event and is very much in conversation with this challenging, reflective, isolating time. And it’s DIY horror at its finest.

Begos has always been an incredibly hands-on filmmaker who completely immerses himself in his productions. However, his level of involvement in Jimmy and Stiggs reaches new heights. Begos writes, directs, serves as production designer, and even stars in the movie, which makes Jimmy and Stiggs an especially intimate and personal project for him. Jimmy and Stiggs is an insane alien splatterfest, but it also tells a beautiful story about friendship, codependency, and paranoia that’s the perfect film to be born out of the pandemic. It’s a...

The Vox Machina cast loves not having to cut away from the violent or sexy stuff
Image
The Legend of Vox Machina’s much-anticipated third season has left very little to the imagination. Whether it's scenes of amorous encounters, like the one that takes place between Vex and Percy, or gruesome battle frames, they’ve been showing them, outright, spice and all.

When asked about how such scenes jive with their vision for the show, the Critical Role team told CinemaBlend that Vox Machina is the exact show they want to make and watch. Through and through, their depiction of the nitty-gritty (and all that in between) isn’t meant to be gratuitous. Rather, in their eyes, it helps the show feel more lived-in, fleshing out the world in a way that any Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast can understand. In order for a campaign to be compelling, you need to have trust in the world in your characters. And part of that trust is playing things out...

Vox Machina Faces Infernal Challenges in Season 3 Trailer
La Légende de Vox Machina (2022)
Fans of the popular Prime Video animated series The Legend of Vox Machina got a sneak peek at the upcoming third season in a new trailer. The season is expected to deliver intense battles and challenges that push the unlikely band of heroes to their limits. Viewers see a massive red dragon that threatens to destroy Vox Machina, indicating an epic confrontation is coming.

Some scenes also show divisions forming within the group of adventurers. While the trailer features appearances from all seven members of Vox Machina, not everyone is together for key moments. In particular, sequences set in a hellish landscape only include Keyleth, Vax, Grog, Scanlan and Pike. Pike appears distressed in these scenes, raising questions about what led the team to this dangerous place. Neither Vex nor Percy appear with the group in the hellish realm, fueling fan speculation about possible storylines separating the party.

Ally Sheedy, Ruby Dee, and Kate Siegel in Steam (2007)
‘Vampire Therapist’ Launches Today on Steam [Trailer]
Ally Sheedy, Ruby Dee, and Kate Siegel in Steam (2007)
Little Bat Games’ debut title in the darkly humorous Vampire Therapist is out today on Steam. Inspired by the likes of What We Do in the Shadows and Horrible Histories, Vampire Therapist merges a comedic style with “deep, introspective subject matters and heartfelt characters and real-life historical personalities.”

The story sees players step into the boots of Sam, a cowboy (and vampire) from the Old West who is looking to change his murderous ways and connect with what’s left of his soul. Looking for answers in his immortality, Sam travels to Europe and is taken under the (bat)wing of reformed assassin, warrior and undead heartthrob Andromachos.

Together, they help blood-sucking immortals realise that just because they’re dead, it doesn’t mean they can’t live. All of the techniques discussed and used in Vampire Therapist were created in consultation with licensed therapists to give the game an authentic message.

Why Critical Role Should Move Away From D&d 5e For Its Next Campaign
Image
Critical Role may consider leaving DnD 5e due to a number of factors with the game itself and its publisher. The company is developing its own Ttrpg, Daggerheart, to possibly replace DnD. The potential release of DnD 5.5e in late 2024 could influence Critical Role's decision to switch systems.

Critical Role has used Dungeons & Dragons' fifth edition ever since it debuted back in 2015. With its simple, easy to understand mechanics, well-known reputation, and relatively fast gameplay for a tabletop game, it made it the perfect system for the streaming show, so much so that other shows, like Dimension 20, have followed in the same vein. Still, with the constant controversy that Wizards of the Coast seems to find itself in, Critical Role could look at leaving the system behind.

This wouldn't be the first time the Critical Role cast has switched systems, nor would it be the first big company to leave the IP behind.

Critical Role's New Ttrpg Is A Game Changer With One Huge Difference From D&d
Image
Critical Role's Daggerheart enters beta testing, offering Domain Cards and d12 dice as unique features for TTRPGs. Daggerheart's success depends on distinguishing itself from D&d, which could be difficult given the similarity in classes and races. With Critical Role's devoted fanbase, Daggerheart has the potential to achieve success, especially if Matt Mercer adopts it for a new campaign.

Critical Role has aided in the recent resurgence of Dungeons & Dragons, being its biggest live game stream. For some, the show is the reason they got into D&d's fifth edition, and it is the gold standard as to what 5e can be, yet Matt Mercer and the cast seem intent on distancing themselves from Wizards of the Coast. As of March 2024, Daggerheart, Cr's very own fantasy tabletop RPG, has entered beta testing.

Some will be surprised to know that Critical Role did not start life as a D&d campaign.

Baldur's Gate 3 Players Can Equip Some Of Critical Role's Iconic Loot
Image
Baldur's Gate 3 players can now incorporate items from Critical Role into their game for a fun and unique experience. The Vestiges of Divergence mod adds powerful gear like Cabal's Ruin and Fenthras to Baldur's Gate. Players can choose to equip more than three Vestiges at once, potentially creating an unbeatable character in the game.

Baldur's Gate 3 players looking to show off their love for the beloved series Critical Role can now do so with some exceptionally well-crafted items pulled directly from the show. Given that both are inspired by and make use of the rules of Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition, it makes sense that some creative fans would find a way to unite Matt Mercer's ever-popular campaign with Larian Studios' RPG. While plenty of mods already exist that incorporate characters and locations from Critical Role, this creation is more subtle and, arguably, much more fun.

Baldur Gate 3's Narrator Was Almost A Well Known DnD Dungeon Master
Image
Matt Mercer was considered for Baldur's Gate 3's narrator role, but ended up voicing the iconic Human Ranger Minsc instead. Mercer's casting as Minsc was well-received by the community. Aside from Mercer, voice actor Neil Newbon received praise for his performance as Astarion, winning Best Performance at The Game Awards.

Baldur's Gate 3's omnipresent narrator may have found their way into the hearts of the game's community, but Larian Studios briefly flirted with bringing in an exceptionally experienced Dungeon Master to dictate the experience. Through players' adventures through the Forgotten Realms, the voice of the narrator, played by veteran actor Amelia Tyler, accompanies every major decision and moment in the story, chronicling every action and choice. While Tyler has earned plenty of praise for her performance, one of the most beloved Dungeons & Dragons content creators almost took on the role.

Speaking at the Game Developers Conference, per VG247, Larian...

A Complete Cast and Character Guide for Hunter x Hunter
Image
Quick Links Gon's Group Defines Hunter x Hunter Hunter x Hunter Features Some of the Best Anime Villains Hunter x Hunter's Supporting Cast Fleshes Out the World

Like many long-running shonen anime, Hunter x Hunter has an absolutely massive cast. These characters range from being world-famous, like Gon and Killua, to somewhat more obscure, like Chrollo and Meruem, to the extremely minor, like Tonpa and Zepile. One of the core themes of the series is about how everyone's journey matters, and so nearly every character, no matter how unimportant, receives some degree of development.

Because HxH has been adapted into two anime series with different casts, there are even more voice actors connected to the series than there are characters, and nearly every performer succeeds in perfectly bringing their character to life. Hunter x Hunter is among the most iconic shonen anime, and its success is largely owed to...

“It’s almost criminal”: Xbox Legend Parris Lilley is Incensed at Microsoft and Xbox Not Securing One Game
Image
Xbox is missing out yet again with another game, and it’s not just a filler title but possibly the biggest game of the year: Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The timed exclusivity deal that PlayStation has with the developer and publisher is a major blow to the rival company and is a clear indication that regardless of how powerful their hardware can be, it is futile without games to play with. Xbox Legend Parris Lilley weighs in on the negative impact of exclusivity on the gaming community in general and hopes it goes away for good.

PlayStation and Nintendo excel in the same aspect, which is their exclusive games. While Xbox may have a more powerful console, the quality of their first-party games is not comparable to that of their competitors, which is holding them back.
