Who Is The Fisherman Killer In 2025's I Know What You Did Last Summer?
Image
This article contains spoilers for "I Know What You Did Last Summer."

If you're a casual fan of slasher films, you may think an article about who the killer turns out to be in the latest "I Know What You Did Last Summer" movie is fairly standard. Yet the property, despite its resemblance to other slasher franchises, has a few subversive tricks up its sleeve. For one thing, even though it's technically a whodunit film series carrying on the template that began in Lois Duncan's source novel, the reveal of who the killer or killers are in each film isn't typical. To wit: Ben Willis (Muse Watson) was the killer in both the original 1997 movie and its sequel, 1998's "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer," which added Willis' son Will (Matthew Settle) as his accomplice. In the direct-to-video sequel "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer,...

Best Dolph Lundgren Movies
Image
After receiving a degree in chemical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Sydney, Dolph Lundgren started his acting career with a James Bond film (A View to a Kill) in 1985, quickly followed by his iconic performance as Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, and then a string of action films. With a career spanning five decades, the man has kept busy, playing over 100 parts… and now, we have taken on the task of picking some of his best movies. Here we go:

Don’T Kill It (2016)

Directed by Mike Mendez, Don’t Kill It combines action, horror, and comedy while dropping Lundgren into the role of badass demon hunter Jebediah Woodley, who seems more interested in finding his next drink than catching demons. His vocation has brought him to Chickory Creek, Mississippi, where Christmas is being ruined...

An Unmade I Know What You Did Last Summer Sequel Could Have Changed The Franchise Completely
Image
Given the juggernaut that the "Scream" franchise became, it feels like that property is the obvious and uncontested champion of the wave of teen horror films that it spawned. Not so fast, Ghostface — while other contenders like the "Urban Legend" and "Dracula 2000" movies petered out long ago, the Fisherman manages to keep coming back for more.

That's right: Another Kevin Williamson-penned horror film, 1997's "I Know What You Did Last Summer" has spawned two sequels, a reboot series in 2021, and a legacy sequel due out in 2025 (at the time of writing). While that's not yet enough to rival "Scream," it's impressive that the franchise is far from dead, especially considering how many bizarre twists and turns the property's continuity has taken over its relatively short lifespan. The central hook of the first film — a group of teens cause and then cover up an accidental death, only to find...

8 Films to Die For: Revisiting the Original ‘After Dark Horrorfest’
Image
The After Dark Horrorfest was a game-changer back when it premiered in 2006. Not only was this film festival devoted to the horror genre, it was accessible. Founder Courtney Solomon (An American Haunting) chose the best possible venue for this “ultimate celebration of horror”: the big screen. So from November 17 to 21, these hand-picked titles were shown at select theaters across the U.S.

There have been four “sequels” to the After Dark Horrorfest since then, but for many horror hounds like myself, the original one is a bit more meaningful. It was an exciting time for discovery, developing one’s own taste, and for learning what the genre had to offer in the non-mainstream sector.

So in honor of this momentous film fest, we look back at the first “8 Films to Die For”.

The Abandoned (Nacho Cerdà)

‘Hatchet: Complete Collection’ Review – Adam Green’s Franchise Still Delivers the Bloody Goods
Image
“It’s not a remake. It’s not a sequel. And it’s not based on a Japanese one.”

Hatchet‘s festival tagline — a quote from a major studio’s rejection of the film — served as a rally cry for horror fans. Despite its roots planted firmly in practical effects-driven ’80s slashers a la Friday the 13th, Hatchet felt fresh and exciting when it arrived in 2006; a gory but lighthearted reprieve from torturous studio horror littered with janky CGI and cheap scares.

Willed into existence by writer-director Adam Green based on a character he conceived as an 8-year-old summer camper, the Hatchet franchise centers on Victor Crowley — the hulking, vengeful spirit of a deformed boy that haunts the swamps of New Orleans. Kane Hodder brings a similar physicality to the role as he did to Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th Parts VII-x, but Crowley is more ferocious. The casting...

Mike Mendez’s cult classic ‘Killers’ coming to Blu-ray
Image
In 1997, director Mike Mendez and co-writer/star Dave Larsen collaborated on the brutal, uncompromising and wickedly funny Killers, a movie that divided audiences at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival but then had a hard time finding an audience due to scattershot distribution. Having gained a cult following in the years since, Synapse Films is bringing Killers to Blu-ray in its complete, unrated director’s cut on October 8, 2024 to make Halloween 2024 more killer than ever!

Once upon a time, the James Brothers, Odessa (Dave Larsen) and Kyle (David Gunn), murdered their parents in their own beds. Now they’ve escaped from Death Row and are on the run on a stormy night, looking for a place to hide out. They invade the home of the Ryans, who seem like a typical American family and should be easy to control. But there’s something not quite right about this brood—the women seem...

The Convent: Mike Mendez’s 2000 horror comedy gets a limited edition 4K release
Image
It’s a good time to be a fan of filmmaker Mike Mendez. Not only did he contribute to the horror anthology Satanic Hispanics, which received a theatrical release a few months ago and is coming soon to Blu-ray, but now Synapse Films has given his awesome 2000 horror comedy The Convent (watch it Here) a limited edition 4K release! Copies of this release can be purchased directly from Synapse Films, or through Diabolik DVD.

Directed by Mendez from a screenplay by Chaton Anderson, The Convent has the following synopsis: In 1960, a young woman named Christine enters St. Francis Boarding School for Girls and lays waste to the resident nuns. Four decades later, a group of college students head to the long-abandoned building late one night to tag it with their fraternity letters, little knowing that rumors of the place being haunted are terrifyingly true. Image
Dread and Iconic Events gave the horror anthology Satanic Hispanics a theatrical release on 800 screens in the United States, Canada, and Mexico back in September – and while a digital release of the film is available for rent or purchase at This Link, it will also be reaching Blu-ray later this month. The release date is December 19th, and copies can be pre-ordered Here.

The film consists of segments that were directed by five different Latin filmmakers: Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!), Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead), Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project), Demián Rugna (Terrified), and Gigi Saul Guerrero (Into the Dark: Culture Shock). The stories were written by Alejandro Mendez, Demian Rugna, Adam Cesare, and Lino K. Villa. Synapse announce limited edition 4K of Mike Mendez’s ‘The Convent’
Image
Synapse Films have announced a Limited Edition Uhd & Blu-ray Slipcover combo for Mike Mendez’s much-cherished The Convent (a personal fave of mine Fyi).

From its opening massacre, set to the strains of (appropriately enough) Lesley Gore, The Convent is an in-your-face fright film with a full-blooded sense of humor. Director Mike Mendez both embraces and skewers the traditions of supernatural/possession cinema, with wicked twists that upend expectations and deliver jolts and laughs in equal measure. Not for the devout or the easily offended, the film gives Barbeau one of her best roles as the motorcycle-riding, shotgun-wielding Christine, with bonus appearances by fellow genre icon Bill Moseley (The Devils Rejects) and rapper/actor Coolio. The Convent rocked audiences at festivals including Sundance and Fantasia, but has long been unavailable on disc. Now you can possess its uncensored U.S. debut remastered in Dolby Vision 4K from the original uncut...

Satanic Hispanics Review
Image
The best horror anthologies are more than just haphazard collections of short films mashed together to reach feature length. Movies with a unifying theme or filmmaking style are more successful at holding the audience's interest, and the Latino-driven anthology Satanic Hispanics makes its unique focus clear. There are still some slightly jarring tonal shifts between the individual segments, which range from heavy and intense to lighthearted and silly, and the framing story doesn't hold them together as well as it should, but, as an entertaining showcase for a group of underappreciated Latino horror filmmakers, Satanic Hispanics accomplishes its goal.

Most of the filmmakers involved with Satanic Hispanics are veterans of other horror anthologies, including Tales of Halloween and the V/H/S and ABCs of Death movies, and they clearly understand how to deliver a compact horror tale that fits within a larger framework. The framing story is often the weakest part of these anthologies,...

‘Satanic Hispanics’ – How ‘Demon Knight’ Inspired Director Mike Mendez’s Anthology Wraparound
Image
Horror anthology Satanic Hispanics assembles five Latin American horror filmmakers to celebrate Hispanic talent in front of and behind the camera, curating tales that spotlight Hispanic myths and legends. Uniting four tales of terror is Satanic Hispanics‘ wraparound from producer/director Mike Mendez.

In Mendez’s wraparound, a police raid uncovers a grisly crime scene full of dead bodies. They take the sole survivor, a man that refers to himself as “The Traveler” (Efren Ramirez), into custody for answers. The Traveler attempts to explain the bizarre events that led up to his capture to skeptical detectives Gibbons (Sonya Eddy) and Arden (Greg Grunberg). He entertains them with four tales of supernatural encounters, hoping to persuade them to let him go.

Ahead of the film’s theatrical release on September 14 (tickets on sale now), Bloody Disgusting spoke with the filmmaker about the challenges of curating an anthology and helming a wraparound...

Coolio at an event for Hyper Noël (2002)
R.I.P. Coolio – Rapper Appeared in ‘Leprechaun in the Hood’ and ‘The Convent’
Coolio at an event for Hyper Noël (2002)
Sad news this Wednesday evening as TMZ reports that Coolio has passed away at the age of 59.

“The rapper who achieved enormous success in the 90s was visiting a friend late Wednesday afternoon when he passed away,” explains the site.

“Coolio’s longtime manager, Jarez, says Coolio went to the bathroom at his friend’s house, but when he didn’t come after a while … the friend kept calling for him, and eventually went in and found Coolio laying on the floor.”

Coolio, who became a household name in the 90s, appeared in a handful of horror movies including Leprechaun in the Hood (2000) and Mike Mendez’s neon-soaked classic The Convent (2000) alongside Bill Moseley. He can also be seen in the 2004 Darrell Roodt-directed Dracula 3000.

TMZ was told the friend called EMTs, who arrived and pronounced Coolio dead on the scene — “and Jarez tells us the paramedics suspect he suffered cardiac arrest.

‘Satanic Hispanics’ Review – Horror Anthology Delights With Curated Cultural Frights
Image
Satanic Hispanics celebrates Hispanic heritage with a horror anthology that assembles five horror filmmakers from various corners of Latin America. Each applies their cultural background and style, producing an eclectic mix of tales that take wide swings from bone-chilling to delightfully funny. That variation provides a strange yet captivating journey.

A police raid uncovers a grisly crime scene full of dead bodies.

Director Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!, The Convent) helms the Traveler-centric wraparound. Ramirez serves as the perfect storyteller to connect each segment; his Traveler feels lived in and difficult to surprise,...

Satanic Hispanics Review: More Horror Anthologies Should Be This Steady And Fun [Fantastic Fest]
Image
Future horror anthology producers and filmmakers can learn from the smooth-as-silk collection "Satanic Hispanics." Most importantly? Don't undervalue your wraparound that binds segments together like storytelling glue. Anthologies are, by definition, multiple shorts assembled to feature length via chapters, but what separates a "Deathcember" that's too oddly randomized from something like "Satanic Hispanics" is wraparound consistency. Everyone involved harmoniously feeds off the prompt's cultural emphasis instead of ping-ponging viewers around some production company's amalgamation of dusty shorts with the intent to cash in on anthology redistribution. "Satanic Hispanics" isn't just another assortment of kill sequences with an overall thematic impact — it's a model to follow and a path toward horror anthology success.

What proceeds is an ode to horrific Hispanic heritage from indie horror directors who allow their traditions, nightmares, and ancestors to haunt universal audiences. You've seen their works from "Juan of the Dead" to "Culture Shock," "Big Ass...

Another Fantastic Fest is coming to a close, and we’ve got the full list of 2022 Fantastic Fest awards winners — including Searchlight Pictures’ upcoming release “The Menu.”

The film festival, held at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar in Austin, Texas, is one of the premiere genre film festivals in the country and has led to more acquisitions than South by Southwest, which takes place in Austin every spring. A joyful celebration of all things genre, this year was no different – with buzzy titles like Searchlight’s “The Menu” and MGM’s “Bones and All” playing alongside more esoteric fare like “Shin Ultraman.” There was even a high profile Marvel Studios premiere in their upcoming black-and-white Halloween special, “Werewolf by Night” (which really brought the house down).

“We really gave our jury members a tough job this year. We have no idea how they were able to choose between so many amazing films,...

Hola Mexico 2022: Mexican Horror Reigns in L.A. Festival's Nocturna Program
Image
In our humble opinion, the best thing that a regional film festival can do for its program is include a block of films devoted to genre and fantastic cinema. Hola Mexico Film Festival, the largest Mexican Film Festival outside of Mexico, does exactly that.    Their Nocturna program may be a small part of the overall program but they have programmed the best that the Mexican genre scene has to offer. The program includes Satanic Hispanics, Huesera (Michelle Garza Cervera) and Mal de ojo (Isaac Ezban).   On top of that, there is the Batman movie that you didn't know you needed until now: La Mujer Murcielago (Batwoman).    Batwoman is called to...

12 Scary Movies That Take Place On Halloween (That Aren't Part Of The Halloween Franchise)
Image
There was some brief debate — many years ago — as to whether or not an action picture like "Die Hard," set at a Christmas party, should qualify as a Christmas movie. That is: is "Die Hard" appropriately emblematic of the holiday season? These days, it's widely accepted as such — with some websites even finding scientific evidence to prove it — but there was a time when what did and did not qualify as a Christmas move was a matter of multiple critical kerfuffles. In 2022, the broad consensus appears to be that anything set at Christmas, even briefly, could qualify. Older critics have seen the definition broaden.

No such debate was ever required for a Halloween movie. What qualifies as a "Halloween movie" has, if one asks a die-hard horror nut, always been quite broad. Indeed, nearly anything in the horror genre can be watched in the month of October and count as a Halloween movie.

Significant Other trailer: Maika Monroe sci-fi thriller gets Paramount Plus release
Image
Almost exactly one year ago today, it was announced that genre regular Maika Monroe would be re-teaming with Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, the writing / directing duo that was behind the 2019 film Villains (watch it Here), for a sci-fi thriller called Significant Other. Now a trailer for Significant Other has arrived online, and along with that comes the news that the film is going to be released through the Paramount Plus streaming service on October 7th. You can watch the trailer in the embed above.

Not much information has been revealed about Significant Other, but we know that the story centers on

young couple Harry and Ruth, who take a remote backpacking trip through the Pacific Northwest, but things take a dark turn when they realize they may not be alone.

Monroe is joined in the cast by Jake Lacy (White Lotus).
