All hail Hamza: The biggest talking points from the Strictly Come Dancing 2022 final
Helen Skelton in Granada Reports (1980)
The 2022 series of Strictly Come Dancing went out with an explosion of sequins, with finalists Hamza Yassin, Helen Skelton, Fleur East and Molly Rainford competing to win the Glitterball Trophy in the grand finale.

Each celebrity and their partner performed three dances for the judges, the studio audience and the viewers at home.

There was also a performance from Florence and the Machine, and a gloriously chaotic group dance.

In the end, Yassin pipped the other stars to the post, and became this year’s winner, after bringing back his legendary Couple’s Choice.

Read on for the key moments from the night…

Hamza Yassin was crowned the winner

Anton Du Beke summed it up pretty well during the final when he told the wildlife presenter: “I laugh out loud with joy when I watch you dance.” Yassin was the last man standing in this competition and he won viewers...

‘Just sensational’: Hamza Yassin and Jowita Przystal score their first perfect 40 in Strictly final
Image
Hamza Yassin and Jowita Przystal had Strictly Come Dancing viewers and the judges in tears tonight (17 December) after performing their Couple’s Choice in the final.

The pair danced to “Jerusalema – Remix” by Master Kg featuring Burna Boy and Nomcebo Zikode, and were competing in the final against Fleur East and Vito Coppola, Molly Rainford and Carlos Gu, and Helen Skelton and Gorka Marquez.

“I get a little emotional watching you dance,” judge Anton Du Beke told them after they performed, “because it’s like the clouds part when you come onto the dance floor and the sun comes out.”

The famously grumpy Craig Revel Horwood gave them a score of 10, leading them to achieve their first perfect 40 of the series. He said: “Hamza, you’re everything I’m not, darling. You spread joy to the world… absolutely incredible.”

Both Du Beke and fellow judge Motsi Mabuse were brought to tears by the dance,...

Strictly: Snow-themed pro routine cut from results show after Solihull ice tragedy in which three boys died
Image
Strictly Come Dancing cut a snow-themed routine from its recent results show after three boys died in Solihull after falling through ice.

On Sunday (12 December) afternoon, three children aged eight, 10 and 11 slipped through thin ice at a lake in Solihull, dying in the water. A fourth boy, aged six, remains in critical condition in hospital.

You can follow updates on The Independent’s live blog here.

Monday night’s (13 December) Strictly results show was due to begin with a pre-recorded icy routine starring the professional dancers as snowflakes, while judge Craig Revel Horwood played the ice queen.

But despite Tess Daly referring to the dance at the end of the semifinal, the results show went ahead without the performance in the final cut.

While viewers questioned why the pro number, which would usually open the show, hadn’t aired, reports emerged that the BBC had pulled the segment following the tragedy in Solihull.

Gavin and Stacey star says ‘we’ve got to find out what Smithy says’
Image
Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page has said that she hopes the show will return for a future Christmas special.

The Welsh actor starred opposite Mathew Horne in Ruth Jones and James Corden’s BBC sitcom, which originally aired from 2007 to 2010 and returned in 2019 for a one-off festive episode.

Appearing on Loose Women on Tuesday (13 December), Page said that, while she’d “love to do another one”, she was unsure of the show’s future.

“I’ve honestly no idea,” Page said. “I’m just the same as everybody else because they don’t tell us. They don’t tell us anything and I’ve never ever asked.

“I’ve never said, ‘Oh Ruth, do you think you’ll do another one or is there going to be more?’ I’m just not that sort of person. I’ve always just thought, we’ll wait and see and if there is,...

Wednesday beats Dahmer to become third show to ever hit major Netflix milestone
Image
Wednesday has hit a major landmark in its third week of streaming on Netflix.

The series, which launched on the platform on 23 November, has become one of only three programmes to garner one billion views within its first month.

Only Squid Game and Stranger Things season four have reached this achievement before.

Wednesday has thus surpassed Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story to become the second-most watched Netflix programme in the English language, behind Stranger Things.

The series features Jenna Ortega as the eponymous character and the daughter of the Addams Family.

According to Variety, Netflix measures its most popular list by the number of hours watched in its first 28 days of availability. This time period saw Dahmer, starring Evan Peters as the eponymous serial killer, reach 856.2 million hours.

Wednesday has passed this number and still has a week left to hit its month mark on the platform.

However,...

Strictly: Molly Rainford says dance-off ‘knockbacks’ made her doubt final spot
Image
Molly Rainford has shared an emotional post on Instagram ahead of the Strictly Come Dancing final.

The 22-year-old actor was the bookies’ favourite to leave the dance competition during Sunday (11 December) night’s semifinal, having already faced the dance-off four times this series.

However, Rainford and partner Carlos Gu made it into the final while avoiding the bottom two in Monday’s (12 December) results show.

Instead, Fleur East and Will Mellor faced the dance-off, with Mellor being eliminated.

Celebrating making it to the final, Rainford posted on Instagram: “Words can’t describe this feeling. Nobody understands just how grateful we are to not only be Strictly Come Dancing 2022 Finalists but to get to that place in the final all thanks [to] your support and votes.”

The actor opened up about working with Gu on his first series as a professional dancer on the show and explained that getting to the final...

Strictly’s Anton Du Beke explains decision to save Will Mellor in dance-off amid ‘fix’ allegations
Anton du Beke in Good Morning Britain (2014)
Anton Du Beke has explained why he voted to save Will Mellor over Fleur East in the Strictly Come Dancing semi-final.

After a high-scoring semi-final on Sunday (11 December) night, East and partner Vito Coppola found themselves in the bottom two with Mellor and Nancy Xu.

After the couples performed again, both Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse voted for East. But when the vote came to Du Beke, the former pro dancer said that East and Coppola had made “an error in a dismount from a lift”, and he wanted Mellor to go through.

The casting vote was then given to head judge Shirley Ballas, who voted for East and Coppola, and sent Mellor and Xu home.

However, on social media, many viewers suggested that the judges had made the wrong decision and that Du Beke was correct to take into account East’s mistake.

Strictly: Carlos Gu unable to hold back tears as Molly Rainford makes it to final avoiding fifth dance-off
Image
Strictly Come Dancing star Carlos Gu was unable to hold back his tears after Molly Rainford made it through to the final without facing the last dance-off.

Despite being one of the highest marked stars of the series, the Cbbc star has found herself in the bottom two four times so far in the competition.

Going into Sunday (11 December) night’s semifinal, Rainford was the bookies’ favourite to be eliminated before the final.

However, the couple topped the leaderboard, leading to Rainford and Gu being the first couple announced to have made it through to the final during Monday (12 December) night’s results show.

They were joined by Hamza Yassin and his partner Jowita PrzystaÅ., and Helen Skelton and Gorka Márquez.

Fleur East and Vito Coppola competed in their fourth dance-off of the series against first-timers Will Mellor and partner Nancy Xu.

Will Mellor voted off Strictly Come Dancing semi-final in ‘most difficult decision ever’
Image
A Strictly Come Dancing contestant has been eliminated from the show just one week before the final.

On Sunday (11 December), the remaining celebrities performed two dances in the hopes of scoring a place in next week’s final.

Sadly, actor Will Mellor fell at the final hurdle and became the 11th person to be voted off this year’s series.

Mellor was in the dance off with singer and radio presenter Fleur East. Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse opted to save East, but when Anton Du Beke saved Mellor, it was down to head judge Shirley Ballas to cast the deciding vote.

“First of all, the British public has spoken and with respect I take that on board,” Ballas said. “My fellow judges have decided that they don’t agree, so I have made lots of notes here. Both couples were outstanding and, not only today, but through the series.

Strictly judges call out ‘difficult’ result as Kym Marsh is eliminated
Image
The latest celebrity to be eliminated from Strictly Come Dancing has been revealed.

Saturday night’s results show (3 December) aired a day earlier than usual due to the BBC’s coverage of the World Cup.

Actor and singer Kym Marsh left the BBC competition after a dance-off with Molly Rainford.

Craif Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse opted to save Rainford after both couples performed their routines again, with Anton Du Beke saving Marsh.

Head judge Shirley Ballas saved Rainford, sending Marsh home – but all the judges said it was a “difficult” decision.

Speaking about the result, Marsh, who missed last week’s show due to Covid, said: “Honestly I’ve loved every single second that I’ve been here. I never thought I’d get to this stage, in a million years. I have to say, it’s all down to this man [Graziano Di Prima] here, he is just...

Helen Skelton addresses marriage split for first time on Strictly Come Dancing
Image
Helen Skelton hinted at her marriage split during the latest episode of Strictly Come Dancing.

During the broadcast, which occurred on Friday (2 December) instead of its usual slot on a Saturday, the Countryfile presenter explained why she said yes to the BBC dancing competition.

“I did Strictly this year because sometimes you just need to jump on the opportunity and chance to put a big smile on your face,” she said.

Skelton signed up to the show months after revealing that her ex Richie Myler had “left the family home” just four months after they welcomed their third child.

“Very sad to say that Richie and I are no longer a couple,” she wrote on Instagram in April. “He has left the family home. We will be doing our best to co-parent our small children.”

Skelton, who married Myler in 2013, accompanied the post with two broken heart emojis.

Strictly: Shirley Ballas shuts down claim she’s responsible for Fleur East being in dance-off
Strictly Come Dancing (2004)
Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas has shut down critics for suggesting she was responsible for Fleur East landing in the dance-off.

During Saturday night’s show, singer East, who scored the first 40 of the series the week before, scored 35 points for her Rumba.

But despite appearing in the middle of the leaderboard, East found herself in the bottom two on Sunday (27 November) against Ellie Taylor.

All four judges voted to save East and her partner Vito Coppola over Taylor and Johannes Radebe, who’d been at the bottom of the leaderboard with just 25 marks during the live show.

However, on Twitter, one viewer suggested that it was head judge Ballas’s “overmarking” of Mellor and Hamza Yassin that had landed East in the bottom for the third time this series.

“This Is What Happens When You Overmark Will Mellor And Hamza Yassin And You Undermark Molly Rainford And Fleur East!

Strictly: Tyler West is eighth celebrity to leave show as judges struggle with ‘difficult’ dance-off decision
Image
Tyler West has become the eighth contestant to leave Strictly Come Dancing.

Saturday (19 November) night’s show saw the final eight couples compete on the Tower Ballroom stage as the dance competition returned to Blackpool for the first time in three years.

Fleur East topped the leaderboard with a perfect score of 40, but it was close at the top and in the middle, with three couples all receiving 35 points. You can see the full leaderboard here.

During Sunday (20 November) night’s results show, Tyler West and his partner Dianne Buswell and Molly Rainford and her partner Carlos Gu found themselves in the dance-off, having both scored 35.

After dancing again, the judges agreed that both couples had danced better in their second performances.

Craig Revel Horwood said: “Wow, both couples danced so much better, they really did. Tyler, incredible hips, this time round, amazing. Molly, lighter, brighter, much more precise. I...
