Paul O’Grady remembered as a ‘force for good’ by famous friends in ITV special
Image
Paul O’Grady has been remembered as a “force for good” by his famous friends including Carol Vorderman, Julian Clary and Michael Cashman.

Celebrities paid tribute to the drag queen turned TV and radio star during For The Love of Paul O’Grady on ITV on Sunday (9 April) evening, following his death last month at the age of 67.

O’Grady, who started out as a social worker while performing on the London nightclub circuit as the acerbic, platinum wig-wearing Lily Savage, died “unexpectedly but peacefully” on 28 March, his partner Andre Portasio said in a statement.

Remembering O’Grady for his activism, Vorderman, 62, said: “He was not only brilliant as an entertainer, he was a force for good.”

Former Labour Party leader Ed Miliband added: “He wasn’t just a fighter for the underdog, somebody who was willing to use his platform to speak up for people who didn’t have a platform,...

Just 11% of top talent from diverse background.

Just one-tenth of the BBC’s top on-screen talent is from a black, ethnic, minority background (Bame), the corporation’s Annual Report has revealed (reports Broadcast).

Bame stars make up 11% of the corporation’s top earners, with the likes of BBC Radio DJ Trevor Nelson and newsreader George Alagiah among the highest paid, with salaries of between £250,000 and £300,000.

Radio 4 Today programme presenter Mishal Husain earns between £200,000 and £250,000, less than half than her colleague John Humphrys’ £600,000-£650,000 salary.

Amanda Mealing wants to go on MasterChef
Amanda Mealing wishes she could cook so she could go on 'MasterChef'. The 'Casualty' actress has revealed if she were to take part in any reality show it would be the BBC cooking competition but admits she wouldn't do very well because she can't even make toast. The 47-year-old star is also a huge fan of 'Strictly Come Dancing' and is jealous she can't follow in her co-star Sunetra Sarker's footsteps by taking part. She explained: ''Well I used...

‘Still’ is a grim but untidy crime drama
Still

Written and Directed by Simon Blake

UK, 2014

The subject of adolescent criminality is a hot button issue in Britain, playing on the fears generated by rampant urbanization and the generation gap. Cinema has addressed these fears in different ways; Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg riffed on the idea with Hot Fuzz and their friend Joe Cornish cast them as unlikely heroes in Attack the Block while Michael Caine‘s avenging war vet in Harry Brown takes it into the territory of elderly wish fulfilment. Writer/director Simon Blake uses the idea as the narrative and thematic force behind Still; a grim, well-acted yet slightly messy contemporary crime drama.

Set in and around North London, Still introduces Carver (Aidan Gillen) and his ex-wife Rachel (Amanda Mealing) putting flowers on the grave of their deceased teenaged son on the anniversary of his death. Carver has deeply rooted feelings of guilt about...

Still Review [Ciff 2014]
First time directing – alongside writing – isn’t an easy process, and usually results with a watchable average film that feels more like a directorial experimental process. Take arguably the world’s hottest director right now, Christopher Nolan; if you go watch Following and then continue watching his filmography chronologically, you will begin to notice an evolution of sorts with his shot composition, personable style, narrative structure, and directing in general. The point being is that a director’s first outing is usually their weakest production because it’s typically the beginning of their career. That same logic applies to everything really; this review is probably leagues better than the first one I wrote.

Still does not feel like a film created by a first-time director though, it’s the complete opposite. Director Simon Blake has filled this movie with multiple unique shots – scenes filmed from outside a halfway closed-door, dirty...

Amanda Mealing returning to Holby City
Amanda Mealing is reprising her role as Connie Beauchamp in 'Holby City' and 'Casualty'. The 45-year-old last portrayed the cardiothoracic consultant character in December 2010 but she is now going to don her surgical robes again for new storylines in both BBC medical dramas. Speaking on TV show 'This Morning' earlier today (25.07.13), Amanda - who is currently starring as Eleanor in 'Law & Order: UK' - revealed: ''Since I left 'Holby...' I have literally had daily requests for Connie to come back and I had a call from the executive producer of 'Holby...' and 'Casualty' a while ago and he put...

'Holby City' star Amanda Mealing to reprise Connie role in 'Casualty'
Former Holby City star Amanda Mealing is joining Casualty.

The actress - who played Connie Beauchamp on the BBC medical drama between 2004 and 2010 - will now reprise the role in Casualty, The Sun reports.

Viewers last saw Connie three years ago when she resigned from her position at the hospital.

As part of a new storyline, Connie will join the hospital's Casualty department as a "demanding but fair consultant".

Mealing admitted that she was surprised when she was first informed of the plan to bring Connie back.

She said: "When the idea was first proposed I was surprised to say the least. Then when I heard some of the ideas for the character, I thought it was genius.

"I hope this will be as exciting for fans as it is for me. I can't wait to get those heels back on and get to work."

Strike Back Episode 13 Preview & Photo Gallery (+Video)
He’s back!

After a Strike Back’s tragic two-part season 2 premiere, Stonebridge is back at Section 20. But, is Section 20 ready to have Stonebridge back on the team? In this new preview clip, we get a cursory look inside the soldier’s tormented psyche. Also, we get a look at the growing rivalry between Maj. Oliver Sinclair (Rhashan Stone) and Section 20′s new leader Rachel Dalton (Rhona Mitra).

Editor’S Pick: Strike Back Season 2: Deadlier, Personal Threats & Grab-Your-Gut Thrills Abound

Check out these action-packed stills from the Niger mission. It looks like we’ll be seeing more of Michelle Lukes in the field as Sgt. Julia Richmond.

So far, I’m enjoying Dalton’s addition to the team. Similar to Amanda Mealing as Col. Grant, Dalton’s hiding secrets. However, Dalton appears to be acting more out of her own agenda, using Section 20 as a means to an end.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Strike Back: The Complete First Season’ – Keeps the Adrenaline Flowing
Cinemax’s Strike Back gets off to a familiar start for action movie and spy genre fans – a known terrorist is getting ready to unleash a sinister attack and the best intelligence agents in the business must do whatever it takes to stop him.

However, this simple launching off point is hardly the story you’ll encounter in Cinemax’s first season of the series. What starts off as a Jason Bourne meets 24 tale, quickly becomes something much more as you become fully invested in these characters with each episode. Strike Back deftly mixes action and intrigue with enough sex to make Spartacus jealous. By the finale, this series earns it’s place as one of the most thrilling new series on TV and makes the spy-loving world know that this is far from a cookie-cutter action tale.

And, I have to say, it’s one of the few action...

First Look at Rhona Mitra in a New Strike Back Season 2 Trailer
I believe this is our first really good look at Rhona Mitra in action in the upcoming second season of “Strike Back” (or Season 3 to you International types who have been with the show for a while). Mitra’s character is essentially a replacement for Amanda Mealing, who left the show after last season, and I think it’s safe to say she won’t be returning anytime soon. Season 2 of “Strike Back” does return stars Philip Winchester, Sullivan Stapleton and Rhashan Stone, though, and is set to debut on Cinemax August 17th, which is, yes, next month. Wow, has it been that long since Season 1 ended? Apparently so. I’m surprised Cinemax isn’t pairing “Strike Back” with the Melissa George spy show “Hunted”, though. That show won’t premiere until October. You’d think they would be made for each other, especially given that the two shows share producer Frank Spotnitz.

Watch: 'Strike Back' Returns For An Explosive Season 2
Jamie Bamber, Daniel MacPherson, Warren Brown, Alin Sumarwata, and Varada Sethu in Strike Back (2010)
Are you ready for more "Strike Back?" If this all new promo has any indication of what the future holds for Damian Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) and Sgt. Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester), then it looks like Season 2 is going to be explosive.

The Cinemax series follows Section 20, an elite military black ops unit within the British government that focuses on high-risk, top-priority targets. After the shocking season finale -- in which team leader Col. Eleanor Grant (Amanda Mealing) sacrificed her life to save her team -- Stonebridge retired from Section 20 to be with his wife and child.

However, it looks like he didn't stay retired. As seen in the official Season 2 promo above, Scott and Stonebridge -- and newcomer Rachel Dalton (Rhona Mitra) -- are back to doing what they do best: explosions, gun fights and taking down the bad guys. Of course, there's also an occasional glimpse of naked flesh.

New Ass Kicking Trailer for Strike Back Season 2 Kicks All Kinds of Ass
Look, if you’re still not watching Cinemax’s “Strike Back”, I don’t know what to tell ya. It’s the best action-packed show on the airwaves right now. It’s over-the-top, ridiculously violent, with a ton of cussing and totally gratuitous nudity and sex (thank you, pay cable!), and it’s absolutely fun as hell. The best part about the show is probably watching Aussie Sullivan Stapleton playing an American badass going around calling everyone “pal”. Cause, shit, that’s what we Americans do. We call everyone we meet “pal”. Stapleton and Philip Winchester are of course back as the two main leads, supported by fellow returnee Rhashan Stone. Newcomers include Rhoma Mitra, replacing the departed Amanda Mealing as the show’s tough female lead, though from the looks of this latest trailer, she’s not quite the ball-buster that Mealing’s character was. The show’s Season 2 (well,...

First Slick Promo for Strike Back Season 2
My favorite TV show in quite some time, Cinemax’s “Strike Back”, returns for its third season (its second season featuring the current cast) this Summer. Check out the first promo trailer for the show below, which stars Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester as polar opposite Special Forces operators forced to work together to stop bad guys from doing bad things. Yeah, yeah, I know, it’s an old, cliche angle, but the show more than makes up for it with killer action set pieces and plenty of beautiful ladies willing to take it all off for art. And get this, fans of hot British ladies — Rhona Mitra (“Underworld: Rise of the Lycans”) is joining the cast as Section 20′s new female chief, taking over for Amanda Mealing, the former chief who bit it at the end of last season’s finale. I’m really digging what Cinemax is doing re-branding themselves.

Cinemax’s Strike Back Season 2 Scores Female Lead in Rhona Mitra?

There’s a new top dog in the house as Rhona Mitra joins Season 2 of Cinemax’s action drama, Strike Back, as the new head of Section 20.

Cinemax Set to ‘Strike Back’ Again This Friday with Encore Presentation
One of the worst things about catching on to a cable series late is that it is over way too quickly. Most cable series have seasons that last for less than 13 episodes. By the time you hear about it, you are forced to wait a full year for the Blu-ray or DVD release to catch up. Cinemax’s new series Strike Back – starring Philip Winchester, Sullivan Stapleton and Amanda Mealing – recently concluded a strong freshman season. While some viewers (those that read the early reviews) got a chance to get on the bandwagon from the onset, some didn’t catch wind until the season had already begun. Thankfully, starting this Friday, Oct 28, viewers will get to watch an encore presentation of Strike Back’s 10-episode season. Season one will run in sequence every Friday at 10Pm Et/Pt. Premiere Episode Synopsis: After agent John Porter (Richard Armitage) is kidnapped by Pakistani terrorist Latif,...

She also talks about the training she had to go through for the role. We also chat with Mealing about the Strike Back season finale and expectations for Season 2. Highlights: 1:00 – Why Col Grant is a powder keg who’s not allowed to show emotion 2:10 – Mealing discusses her on and off camera rapport with Jimi Mistry (stars as Latif) 2:40 – it’s “quite nice” to command Stonebridge and Scott 5:00 – twists in finale 6:20 – banter with Sully 7:33 – Mealing gets into a small fight with.

It All Ends With A Bang

Many were skeptical when Cinemax ventured into the primetime television game, but its unique venture, the 10-part action drama series "Strike Back," combines what the network does best -- sex -- with violence. In other words, it's every man's new favorite show.

In the explosive season finale -- literally! -- counterterrorism team Section 20 races to stop their season-long nemesis, a terrorist named Latif (Jimi Mistry), from violently derailing a summit of world leaders in Budapest. At the helm of the dangerous operation are team leader Col. Eleanor Grant (Amanda Mealing, "Holby City"), former Delta Force operative Damien Scott (Sullivan Stapleton, "Animal Kingdom") and his straight-laced partner, Sgt. Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester, "Camelot").

If you're a fan of the show, this is definitely one episode you don't want to miss. After all, there's a reason the cast list for Season 2 of "Strike Back" has yet to be revealed.

Philip Winchester and Amanda Mealing discuss the final episode of Strike Back Season 1

Cinemax's hit action series Strike Back will bring Season 1 to a close tonight with the highly explosive finale Episode 1.10. In anticipation of this last episode of the year, which promises to tie up some major loose ends, we caught up with two of Strike Back's lead cast, Philip Winchester and Amanda Mealing, who play Sgt. Michael Stonebridge and Col. Eleanor Grant, respectively.

Here is our conversation.

Philip Winchester: It's like something has gone wrong with Section 20 in here. This is highly classified, and important things are happening. We can't get the phone lines connected!

As soon as you say the wrong thing, they are going to rip you right off those phones and haul you out of this room! Now, what can you tell me about tonight's season finale? From what I understand, it's going to be quite explosive.

‘Strike Back’ Season Finale Lead-in (Episode 10): Victory at What Cost?
Throughout the first six episodes of Strike Back, Stonebridge (Philip Winchester), Scott (Sullivan Stapleton) and Col. Grant’s (Amanda Mealing) team at Section 20 took down some of the world’s deadliest terrorists. However, each victory came at a cost. In episodes 3 and 4, Britain’s mobile Tactical Operations Unit went to Cape Town, South Africa to stop an ex-ira member named Daniel Connolly (Liam Cunningham, Game of Thrones) who was connected to Latif (Jimi Mistry). The ruthless mercenary took Capt. Kate Marshall’s life, just before Grant too his. However, Marshall’s life wasn’t the only thing Connolly killed. By killing Kate, Connolly had inadvertently killed the happiness in Stonebridge’s life. In subsequent episodes, Stonebridge became more brash – almost seeking death. Grant may have won a temporary revenge victory, but it wasn’t going to bring back Marshall or Stonebridge’s friendly innocence. Episodes 5 and 6...

Strike Back Episode 8 Preview: Scott Gets Brutal (+2 Clips and Still Gallery)
We’re nearing the conclusion of the freshman season of Strike Back on Cinemax. With Season 2 on the way, it’s time to start wondering whether or not the suspected security leak inside Section 20 will be revealed by the season finale. I’m hoping it’s not Maj. Oliver Sinclair (Rhashan Stone). He showed off his worth in the Tahir (Adewale Akinnuoye Agbaje) mission so I would hate to find out that he was working for the other side. However, he’s been questioning Scott’s judgment a little too much of late, often bringing up criticism to Col. Eleanor Grant’s (Amanda Mealing). You have to wonder if he’s not trying to set the team up for failure. Grant’s (Amanda Mealing) vendetta with Latif (Jimi Mistry) seems genuine. Also, she’s got a pass after she took out Daniel Connolly (Liam Cunningham) in episode 4. So, if there is a leak,...

Strike Back, Episode 4, Recap and Review: Action is Character

David Chute salutes Strike Back's commanding officer.Amanda Mealing, the actress who plays Colonel Eleanor Grant, chief of the covert ops unit Section 20 on Strike Back, gets off the single best shot, the final one, in episode 4 of this quick-witted series. The coiled fury behind that head shot, the way it's staged and played, even more than the extra-legal step that's being taken, creates the kind of seismic moment on a show that changes our interpretation of everything we've seen, our sense of what's at stake and the kind of people we're dealing with. This one was not as exciting overall as some of the earlier installments. Right up to the explosive death of a major character (we did warn you) it was mostly ...

The New '24'?
Jamie Bamber, Daniel MacPherson, Warren Brown, Alin Sumarwata, and Varada Sethu in Strike Back (2010)
Cinemax's new show "Strike Back" is really one of the most explosive shows on television--really. In true HBO/Cinemax fashion, it's the perfect blend of blood, violence, sex and gritty humor.

In case you haven't been following all of the action, here's a short recap of the premise.

The series follows Section 20, an elite military black ops unit within the British government that focuses on high-risk, top-priority targets--including an international group of terrorists.

When one of their own is captured and held hostage by the terrorist group, the Section 20 enlists the help of Damien Scott (Sullivan Stapleton), a charismatic former Delta Force operative who is familiar with the terrorists. However, his cocky style is often at odds with the more formal team, especially the by-the-book Sgt. Michael Stonebridge (Philip Winchester). Team leader Col. Eleanor Grant (Amanda Mealing) is a smart, tough military leader who is skilled with a gun and...
