Horror movies are the perfect films to watch during Halloween, making it the holiday of choice for many of them. Eli Roth's slasher movie Thanksgiving brought a heaping helping of horror on another day of the year. While it's certainly a change of pace, it's not the only explicitly holiday-themed scary movie.
Christmas is another popular time to spread holiday fear, with some movies decking the halls with bowels of victims. Conversely, one fearsome movie explores the concept of a particularly bad birthday through the lens of another "holiday" movie. Add in a European pagan celebration for the changing of seasons, and it's clear that Thanksgiving will have some seasonal competition from discerning movie lovers.

The horror genre keeps churning out great movies, such as the intoxicating Hugh Grant thriller Heretic. Part of its success is how it's able to produce movies that not only terrify audiences with gross-out scenes or a well-timed jump-scare, but also be a ton of fun. A great example of this is the Terrifier series, with Terrifier 3's funniest moments arriving among the requisite brutality and gore. Thanks mainly to Art the Clown's silent, but deadly, humor.
However, it's not just more recent horror films that have managed to be creepy as all hell, while bringing some solid fun along the way. Classic franchises have gained popularity thanks to quick-witted villains like Freddy Krueger, who is also incredibly creepy. The great thing about the horror genre is its ability to bring audiences together, to share an experience that'll be intense, and uncomfortable at times, but also a lot of fun.

Trick 'r Treat fans just got a much-needed update about the franchise's big-screen future. Michael Doughtery, who wrote and directed the original horror movie, recently offered a positive update on the long-gestating sequel.
In a new commentary track for Trick 'r Treat, released in Arrow Video's 4K Ultra HD edition of the movie, Dougherty opened up about the difficulties plaguing the sequel, which was first announced back in 2013. "Its tricky, because I think we really did capture lightning in a bottle with this one, and it nearly killed me. What a lot of people dont realize is that the bulk of our favorite horror movies, especially the ones that introduced new horror icons, were all independent movies," said Dougherty (via Bloody Disgusting) about having to work within the studio system for Trick 'r Treat.

If I’ve learned anything from Trick ‘r Treat, it’s that you don’t disrespect Halloween. “I hate Halloween,” says Emma (Leslie Bibb) in the opening scene. She blows out the lone jack o’lantern and whines to her husband Henry (Tahmoh Penikett) about taking down the decorations on Halloween night. Moments later, she gets her comeuppance and becomes bloody and artsy décor on the front lawn. Her head is chopped off and her limbs hung with rope in the trees, a pumpkin lollipop shoved into her gaping mouth. Sam might be tiny, but he suffers no fools when it comes to the beloved holiday. It’s a gnarly image that drives home the film’s central theme: Halloween is sacred and should be treated as such.

At Monday night's special fan screening of the cult horror classic Trick 'r Treat hosted by Legendary, the film's iconic character, Sam, and director, Michael Dougherty, stole the show by announcing a sequel during the Q&A session. Other panel participants included two of the film's stars Dylan Baker and Brian Cox, as well as a surprise appearance by producer Bryan Singer.
Watch the entire panel below, moderated by Seth Green.
Director Michael Dougherty started the conversation by discussing how the idea for a sequel came about.
"It's funny because when I first dreamt up the idea of making the first film, I thought, "How neat would it be if we made them a series?" I'm a firm believer that October should be filled with Halloween movies, or horror movies. That's something I remember from childhood. Horror movies and Halloween, they go hand-in-hand. DVD Playhouse—November 2011
By Allen Gardner
Tree Of Life (20th Century Fox) Terrence Malick’s latest effort is both the best film of 2011 and the finest work of his (arguably) mixed, but often masterly canon. A series of vignettes, mostly set in 1950s Texas, capture the memory of a man (Sean Penn) in present-day New York who looks back on his life, and his parents’ (Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain) troubled marriage, when word of his younger brother’s suicide reaches him. Almost indescribable beyond that, except to say no other film in history so perfectly evokes the magic and mystery of the human memory, which both crystalizes (and sometimes idealizes) the past. Like Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, this is a challenging, polarizing work that you must let wash over you. If you go along for the ride, you’re in for a unique, rewarding cinematic experience. Also available on Blu-ray disc.

The original 2007 movie was Four interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the one guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband. It starred Quinn Lord as Sam (Peeping Tommy) with: Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes, Lauren Lee Smith, Moneca Delain, Tahmoh Penikett, Brett Kelly, Britt McKillip, Isabelle Deluce, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Alberto Ghisi, Samm Todd, Anna Paquin, Brian Cox and Leslie Bibb. How long has it been since you’ve seen a really good, well-produced horror film? One that didn’t pride itself on being low-budget in the tradition of film school wannabes everywhere? It’s not your fault – Hollywood just doesn’t like to sink cash into that kind of investment when it knows schlock like Prom Night will draw in the high school crowds. The streak ends now, though. Trick ‘r Treat may be the most fun you’ve had in a horror film in the last decade. Forget all the horror franchise reboots, all the shakey-cam opuses and the creature-features of the week, here we have a horror film that does it right from beginning to end – all 8 of them.

Bittersweet. Wholly bittersweet. Dead Like Me: Life After Death presents fans of the original series with a quandary. What is Dead Like Me without Rube (Mandy Patinkin)?
The new Dead Like Me feature film, reprising the plot of the ill-fated television series, answers that question but in a way that most fans will find lacking. By most accounts, getting 70% of an original cast back together 5 years after it ended (quite abruptly, I might add) would seem like a dream come true. Did we notice Laura Harris, who played Daisy Adair, was replaced by Sarah Wynter? You bet your ass we did. Did we care as much? No. What really gets at us - eats at us - is the void left by Rube's absence. Sure, they play it off decently well in the story but you can't replace the grounding character of...

Chicago – Oscar madness has left the Round Up a little weary of high profile, award-bait movies. We need a break from the Oscars and what better way to do that than with a few titles that might have slipped through the cracks while everyone was singing “Jai Ho”.

As we told you a few weeks ago in Ask AfterEllen.com, Tuesday was the release date of the Dead Like Me movie on DVD — and it’s not what I was expecting.
(Warning: Spoilers ahead.)
As expected, the movie starts five years after George (Ellen Muth) died and became a reaper. Head reaper, Rube (Mandy Patinkin) “got his lights” and the reapers have a new boss, Cameron (Henry Ian Cusick).
The Post-it notes are gone in favor of smart phones and the diner where the reapers used to meet is a pile of ashes. And Cameron’s approach to reaping is just the opposite of Rube’s by-the-book attitude. Those differences change the whole tone of the story — and not necessarily in a good way.
Now, George is sort of the moral compass, the reaper who chooses ethics over the new life, er, death of luxury Cameron brings to the scene.

by Ian Spelling Ellen Muth is dead again, and she couldn’t be happier about it. Muth starred on the creepy, cult-favorite series Dead Like Me. She played Georgia “George” Lass, a young woman who was killed by a wayward toilet seat, only to discover that she was a Reaper, as in Grim Reaper, a member of the undead tasked with plucking the souls of those about to die in the instant before they expire. George worked with several other Reapers – among them Daisy (Laura Harris), Mason (Callum Blue), and Roxy (Jasmine Guy) – and they all answered to their boss, Rube (Mandy Patinkin). The show vanished in 2004, after just two seasons, much to the dismay of its modest but intensely loyal fan base. That fan base lobbied hard for more and, after all this time, Dead Like Me returns as a made-for-dvd movie entitled Dead Like Me: Life After Death.
