This prolific writer, who has contributed to radio, TV, films and theatre, began as a film journalist and bit player. His stints as a contributor to the magazine "Films and Filming" and assistant editor of the British Film Institute's "Monthly Film Bulletin" resulted first in him writing screenplays for director Pete Walker and later writing the book "Doing Rude Things". He moved to theatre, co-writing farces for his own company. During this period he met Julian Clary, who was starting out as a stand-up comic. McGillivray has continued to write for Clary. From 2004 he wrote and produced a series of short horror films, which were later joined together as a portmanteau "Worst Fears". In 2016 he produced the short film "Trouser Bar", briefly a sensation. A new edition of "Doing Rude Things" appeared in 2017. His autobiography, "Little Did You Know", was published 2019. In September 2020 McGillivray presented a chat show, "Live at 5", for the video sharing platform Likee. Before the end of the month the programme was removed because McGillivray had "transgressed community standards." Re-named "Little Did You Know", the show transferred to YouTube in November of the same year and ran until 2021. In 2025 McGillivray began producing a new series of short horror films, beginning with "My Best Friends".
