Trivia

  • Co-wrote two musicals and has directed plays as well as operas.
  • Leading figure in Irish theatre and a foremost lecturer and interpreter of the absurdist plays of Samuel Beckett. He has played the role of Vladimir in Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" more than any other living actor.
  • He played Eamon de Valera in both Caught in a Free State (1983) and The Treaty (1991).
  • Prolific stage actor, especially in his home country Ireland.
  • He gave a lecture on James Joyce on the 18th February, 2008 in Dublin.

Quotes

  • Some people think of Beckett as a very negative writer. I think he's a positive writer. The last three words of [his novel] The Unnameable are: "I'll go on" - "You must go on; I can't go on; I'll go on."
  • [Waiting for Godot] has been with me throughout my life. It's followed me around like a friendly dog. I've played Estragon, Vladimir and Lucky.
  • When it first came out it was so avant-garde people didn't know what to make of it. It wasn't the kind of well-made play they were used to. The problem is, Waiting for Godot is like Mozart: too easy for children and too difficult for adults.
