Tim Allen's Beloved Sitcom, 'Home Improvement,' is Coming to Netflix
Image
Tim Allen's beloved 1990s sitcom is finally coming to Netflix. Home Improvement ran for eight seasons on ABC, and was a hit with fans, who made it a ratings success for Disney. Even former President Jimmy Carter had a cameo on the show.

Home Improvement premiered in 1991 and followed the life of Tim "Tool Man" Taylor (Allen), the host of a local home improvement show who is married to Jill (Patricia Heaton) and raising three sons. The show ran until May 1999 and was created by Carmen Finestra, Matt Williams, and David McFadzean. It's classic 1980s and 90s sitcom fare that became popular early on.

The characters are what made Home Improvement such a hit. Those on the Tool Time show brought plenty of laughs, including Richard Karn as his co-host, Al, and Pamela Anderson as Lisa, prior to her famous role on Baywatch.

Meanwhile, Taylor's home life made for memorable episodes and characters.

Home Improvement Star Zachery Ty Bryan Gets Second Arrest in a Year
Image
Former child actor and television star Zachery Ty Bryan is facing some new legal trouble after a recent arrest for DUI. It marks the second arrest of the year for the same charge after a prior incident in February.

Bryan, who's best known for playing Brad Taylor in the hit sitcom Home Improvement, was arrested on Friday by Oklahoma police, per TMZ. Police say they first observed Bryan sleeping in the back seat of his vehicle and initially let him be, only to observe him driving soon after. After a traffic stop was initiated, police say Bryan admitted that he was intoxicated, and the actor proceeded to fail field sobriety tests. Though Bryan reportedly turned down the breathalyzer, he described his soberness as a five on a 0 to 10 scale. He was then placed under arrest for DUI.

Patricia Richardson Says She Left ‘Home Improvement’ as a ‘Flip-Off to Disney’ Due to Tim Allen Pay Gap
Patricia Richardson
Patricia Richardson was a major reason why the ’90s sitcom “Home Improvement” was as successful as it was for eight seasons—and she knew it. So when it came time to re-up for Season 9, she wanted to strike a deal with Disney: the same pay rate as costar Tim Allen and a producer credit.

Predictably, the network turned her down, so Richardson walked.

“I knew that Disney would in no way pay me that much. That was my way to say ‘no’ and was a little bit of a flip-off to Disney,” she told the Los Angeles Times in an interview published Thursday. “I’d been there all this time, and they never even paid me a third of what Tim was making, and I was working my ass off. I was a big reason why women were watching.”

Last Man Standing Boss Breaks Down the Big Home Improvement Crossover
Image
Yes, you’re seeing double.

Tim Allen reprised his role as Home Improvement‘s Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor during Thursday’s Last Man Standing. In the episode, Vanessa hired the former Tool Time host (who was sporting a vintage Binford Tools t-shirt) to handle a series of home repairs. The half-hour concluded with a very meta conversation between Allen’s alter egos, which also alluded to the Fox sitcom’s fast-approaching series finale.

How ‘Last Man Standing’ Got Permission to Use Tim Taylor Character for ‘Home Improvement’ Crossover
Tim Allen and Nancy Travis in C'est moi le chef ! (2011)
Fox’s “Last Man Standing” is going big in its final season, with an episode featuring Tim Allen in his leading role of Mike Baxter and reprising Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, the iconic character he played on ABC’s “Home Improvement” for eight seasons from 1991-1999.

The bit will come in the second episode of “Last Man Standing’s” upcoming ninth season, when Vanessa hires a home improvement repairman who bears an uncanny resemblance to Mike, who is struggling with an idea for his Outdoor Man 10th Anniversary vlog. And the idea for this epic half-hour, which airs Jan. 7 on Fox, came about because the broadcast network wanted to kick off the sitcom’s final season with something flashy.

“We had already broken the first seven episodes and our intention was to have the ‘Time Flies’ [flash-forward] be the first episode. And Fox came to us and said, ‘We’d...

Disney and ‘Home Improvement’ Creators Settle Profit-Sharing Lawsuit
Tim Allen, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Patricia Richardson, Zachery Ty Bryan, Earl Hindman, and Taran Noah Smith in Papa bricole (1991)
Walt Disney Co. settled a six-year-old lawsuit with the creators of the entertainment company’s wildly popular sitcom “Home Improvement” on Wednesday, weeks before they were set to go to trial.

Wind Dancer Production Group, along with “Home Improvement” creators Matt Williams, Carmen Finestra and David McFadzean — as well as Tam O’Shanter Productions — filed a lawsuit against Disney in 2013, accusing the network of selling syndication rights of “Home Improvement” below the series’s market value, and improperly accounting their share of the net profits, of which they said they were entitled to receive anywhere from 75% to 100%.

The amount of the settlement was not disclosed.

“Among other things, [Disney] have caused the series to be exploited in certain markets well below- market value, including selling the syndication rights in New York City (the largest television market in the United States) for no monetary consideration,” the creators and their lawyers wrote in the initial 2013 complaint.

Disney Settles ‘Home Improvement’ Profit-Sharing Suit After Six Years – Update
Updated, 8:28 Am: Disney has settled a long-running profit-sharing lawsuit filed by producers of the 1990s ABC sitcom Home Improvement. The case had been headed toward trial in the coming weeks.

Producers Matt Williams, Carmen Finestra, David McFadzean and their respective production companies first claimed in court in 2013 that Disney owed them money from syndication and other sources for the 1991-99 series that has made more than $1.5 billion for the company. Read details of the case below.

Previously, March 2017: Like a home improvement that you mistakenly thought was completed years ago, Disney saw some legal walls fall today after a California appeals court gave a Home Improvement profit-sharing lawsuit a brand new hammer.

“The trial court accordingly erred in granting summary adjudication in favor of Disney,” 2nd District Appeals Court Justice Laurie Zelon wrote with the agreement of two other judges, setting the stage for a new round of...

Disney Avoids Trial by Settling Long-Running 'Home Improvement' Profits Lawsuit
Disney has struck a settlement with the creators of Home Improvement to put an end to a six-year-old lawsuit that resulted in a consequential appellate ruling and was within weeks of going to trial.

Paramount has released a new red band trailer for Taraji P. Henson’s “What Men Want,” in which the actress can read men’s minds.

In “What Men Want,” which is a reimagining of 2000’s Mel Gibson movie “What Women Want,” Henson’s Ali gets passed over for a well-deserved promotion at work. Yeah, a dude made partner at their sports agency firm instead.

She then drinks a mysterious tea and bumps her head, only to wake up and be able to hear men’s thoughts.

‘What Men Want’ Red Band Trailer: Pete Davidson Speaks His Red Band Mind
Don’t let the holidays keep you from enjoying a bawdy good Red Band not-safe-for-work trailer: Paramount today released a new one for What Men Want, director Adam Shankman’s gender-switched re-do, starring Taraji P. Henson, of Nancy Meyers’ 2000 romantic comedy What Women Want.

Henson, of course, takes the Mel Gibson role, and while a trailer released last summer efficiently set up the mind-reading premise, today’s Red Band clip adds a glimpse of the raunchy tone that any comedy peering into the mind of the male had better be prepared for.

Actually, Henson gets things off to a fine Red Band start with a shout of “Listen up assholes!”

But the trailer truly earns its Red Band with a quick scene featuring Saturday Night Live‘s Pete Davidson, a co-worker in the sports management company for which Henson’s Ali Davis works and struggles. And Ali doesn’t even...

‘What Men Want’ Trailer: Taraji P. Henson Takes A Trip To The Male Mind
Taraji P. Henson and Tracy Morgan in Ce que veulent les hommes (2019)
Looking into the minds of men could provide enough darkness for any number of horror films, but Adam Shankman’s What Men Want starring Taraji P. Henson goes for the laughs.

In this remake of Nancy Meyers’ 2000 romantic comedy What Women Want, Henson takes the Mel Gibson role as Ali Davis, a successful sports agent who’s constantly boxed out by her male colleagues.

The official summary: When Ali is passed up for a well-deserved promotion, she questions what else she needs to do to succeed in a man’s world… until she gains the ability to hear men’s thoughts. With her newfound power, Ali looks to outsmart her colleagues as she races to sign the next basketball superstar, but the lengths she has to go to will put her relationship with her best friends and a potential new love interest (Aldis Hodge) to the test.

Wind Dancer Films Developing Series About Secret Good Samaritan Giving Out Cash
This is timely — Wind Dancer, the company of Home Improvement co-creators Matt Williams and David McFadzean, has put in development a TV series, in which an anonymous Good Samaritan leaves cash for strangers throughout Los Angeles. The project is not inspired by the current Hidden Cash frenzy, in which an anonymous millionaire hides money-filled envelopes in La, posting clues about their location on Twitter to amass 355,000 followers since launching the social experiment in San Francisco about a week ago. Instead, Wind Dancer is adapting Good Sam, the debut novel of the company’s president Dete Meserve, which is being published next Tuesday, June 3. In it, a female TV news reporter in Los Angeles is looking for the Good Samaritan (aka Good Sam) who is anonymously leaving $100,000 cash on strangers’ front porches throughout the city (trailer below). Williams and McFadzean executive produce with Meserve and Wind Dancer head of production Judd Payne.

Disney Sued Over Profit-Sharing By ‘Home Improvement’ Creators
Creators of the 1991-99 ABC comedy series Home Improvement are suing Walt Disney Television in a dispute over syndication revenues and calculations of the creators’ profit-sharing in the show. Writer-producers Matt Williams, Carmen Finestra, David McFadzean and their respective production companies accuse Disney of syndicating Home Improvement for significantly less than its fair value in certain markets and of failing to properly account for their share of profits on the series. Plaintiffs Williams, Finestra and McFadzean were executive producers and showrunners on Home Improvement for eight seasons, overseeing all aspects of production. While the series was in production, they received writing and exec producing fees under various agreements. Plaintiffs say in their suit (read it here) that Disney sold Home Improvement in New York City, the nation’s largest TV market, for no monetary consideration under a barter-only agreement. In Dallas, however, Disney licensed the series to the local CBS affiliate for $3.75 million plus barter.

McConaughey, who nearly stole the show in Steven Soderbergh's "Magic Mike," won the Best Supporting Male award for a performance that was largely ignored by the Academy Awards. As Samberg astutely observed, "We've got Matthew McConaughey...Hollywood fuck you!"

Jennifer Lawrence won the Best Female Lead award for "Silver Linings Playbook," while John Hawkes took home the Best Male Lead trophy for "Sessions." His co-star, Helen Hunt, won the Best Supporting Female award.

Michael Haneke's "Amour," a darling of the 85th Academy Awards, deservingly won Best International Film.

2013 Spirit Award Winners - 'Silver Linings Playbook' Dominates
Today the 2013 Spirit Awards were handed out and it was a dominating effort from Silver Linings Playbook as it won Best Picture, Director (David O. Russell), Actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and Screenplay (Russell). The only award it was nominated for and didn't win was Best Actor where Bradley Cooper lost to John Hawkes for The Sessions, but that's only a minor blip on the radar when you win this big. Among the early awards handed out, Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower won for Best First Feature while Derek Connolly won for Best First Screenplay for the romantic sci-fi film Safety Not Guaranteed. Then the Twitterverse exploded with a Best Supporting Actor win for Matthew McConaughey and his work in Magic Mike, which, for a time, seemed like it may be able to eek into that last Supporting slot at the Oscars. No dice, a Spirit Award it will have to be.

Variety reports that music video and commercial helmer Anthony Mandler is attached to direct Dead of Winter, a Black List thriller written by Sarah Conradt that has Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) attached to star.
