His novel "Fletch" won the 1975 Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best First Novel from the Mystery Writers of America. The sequel "Confess, Fletch" also won an Edgar Award (Best Paperback Original) in 1977. To date, this marks the only time a novel and its sequel won back-to-back Edgar awards.
