Die Hard: how the miniature effects were done
Simon Brew Mar 30, 2017

From the elevator explosion to recreating Nakatomi Plaza, here's a video that explores the clever miniature effects of Die Hard...

Here’s a video you may not have seen, that we’ve just found on our Die Hard travels. It looks at how the miniature effects were put together for the original Die Hard movie, and we thought you might like to see it.

In the video, Patrick Mcclung and Tom Griep chat about working on the film, and how they put together a smaller version of Nakatomi Plaza. There’s quite a lot of behind the scenes photography in here too, and the pair throw fresh light on the helicopter sequence in the movie, for instance. That, and how the elevator shaft explosion was done.

Take a look…

The interview is a deleted scene from a 2011 documentary, Sense Of Scale, that looks at model making in the film industry.

Crowdfunding Friday: mice, monsters and a Christopher Walken dinosaur
Feature Ryan Lambie 17 May 2013 - 05:47

Here's a fresh batch of worthy, geek-friendly crowdfunding projects that have caught our eye this week...

The best part of putting together this weekly crowdfunding column? While trawling through the dozens of ideas that appear online every day, we stumble on all kinds of weird and wonderful things.

Some ideas are semi-practical - a new kind of flip-flop with soles made from astro turf, for people who want to feel as though they're walking on grass all day long - while others are downright strange - such as a set of tabletop gaming figures shaped neat like little human backsides.

Some ideas are commercial and enticing enough to sale past their funding goal - a zombie Lego Batman mash-up animation's already doing well - while others are rather more niche - we spotted a strip poker text adventure, which has, unsurprisingly, attracted rather less interest so far.

Prometheus Blu-ray – First Details
The most anticipated and polarising film of 2012 is coming to Blu-ray later this year and details of the bonus content have been found on Amazon.fr.

Anyone hoping for a significant number of deleted scenes to fill in the film’s many plot holes will be disappointed as there are only 15 minutes worth. But the most exciting thing on the disc may be the inclusion of the first and final draft of the script by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts.

Prometheus began as a straight Alien prequel written by Jon Spaihts until Damon Lindelof conducted a re-write that became the final product. If they do actually include Spaihts’ original draft, it will be fascinating to see how he originally planned to link it to Alien and if it would have actually made a better film.

You also get Ridley Scott providing an audio commentary so it will be very interesting...

Party Favors: Radley Metzger
Westwood - The master of sensual European cinema golden years have a tint of blue. UCLA just hosted retrospective of Radley Metzger’s films. His most important films are being released on Blu-ray. He’s about to take the director’s chair as he approaches 83.

His masterwork Camille 2000 was just released Blu-ray with an extended version from Cult Epics. The 1969 update of Dumas’ The Lady of the Camellias takes place in an esoteric Italy. The restored high definition transfer gives a detailed look at that magical time. The Party Favors had a chance to chat with Radley Metzger about the release.

Trailer provided by Video Detective

Radley is a true independent filmmaker. He owns the rights to his films instead of selling them off to distributor. He’s not at the mercy of an indifferent studio executive to keep his cinematic legacy available. The first question had to be...

[Blu-Review] Alien Anthology
Finally, one of the box-sets we’ve all been waiting for! The Alien franchise is one of those series that’s perfect for Blu-Ray. It is a benchmark for the format and you can check out our full review of The Alien Anthology below.

Alien:

How much can one say about the timeless classic sci-fi horror film that hasn’t been said before? Well, very little. This is still Ridley Scott‘s finest film to date and it hasn’t aged a bit. Every beat of tension still lands with a punch, the alien is still one of the best ever to be put on-screen, and it’s atmosphere stays eerie and unsettling throughout.

Alien is the king of the monster movies. Very few horror films can achieve the level of investment Scott and co. did with making you actually care for the ensemble, even outside of Ripley. What...

[DVD Review] Alien Anthology
Let’s level with each other: you’ve already seen all of the (or at least the first two) Alien films, and have formed an opinion roughly in alignment with the rest of society that the first two in the series are excellent, but that the latter two were largely ruined by a combination of repetitiveness and studio interference. You probably already have the Alien Quadrilogy, and have ample resources to find out what new supplemental materials are featured on this release (and they are legion). But as much as anything, you don’t need me to tell you what each of these films is about, what characters appear in any of them, and why you should go out of your way to see any of them. The Alien franchise is established in a way that few are, with its rules, aesthetic, and central themes renowned to those who have...

Alien Anthology Blu-ray Review
Holy God. That’s one of the first reactions one has to 20th Century Fox’s six disc Blu-ray release of the Alien Anthology. It was put together by Charles de Lauzirika, and he’s the guy who’s been doing all the supplements for this franchise for years now, including the awkwardly named Alien Quadrilogy. His task was to make a collection that had not only improved picture and sound quality, but all the supplements of previous releases, and even more additional content. He and his team delivered; this is the mother lode. Of course, the series is also presented immaculately, with each film offering two cuts, deleted scenes, commentaries and isolated scores. The six disc set has over 60 hours of supplements. It’s mind-boggling and overwhelming, but also the perfect franchise for this sort of study, and it’s perfect for Blu-ray. Our humbled review of the Alien...

Blu-ray News: Grindhouse Confirmed for October 5th; Alien Anthology Arrives on October 26th
In addition to the excellent Criterion Blu-ray news we reported earlier today, we have two more items that will please HD cinephiles. First up, Blu-ray.com confirms a story we ran a couple weeks ago that hinted the Blu-ray of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse was on the way. While there are no details about the set (although Edgar Wright said he did a commentary track for his fake trailer, Don’t), you should mark your calendars for October 5th. I’m excited to see these films put back together because that’s how they were meant to be seen.

Hit the jump for news on the highly-anticipated Alien Anthology box set.

I am convinced that studios are conspiring to bankrupt me on October 26th because that’s when Alien Anthology hits shelves. It also happens to be the date when the Blu-rays of the Back to the Future...

Bob Burns’ Screaming Video
When was the last time Halloween came five times in one month? It’s been happening this October thanks to Bob Burns, monster kid fandom’s legendary “gift that keeps on giving”—and it has only taken him 42 years to get it all together! At the Bob Burns’ Hollywood Halloween website, a two-hour-plus documentary telling the story of Bob and Kathy Burns’ live Halloween shows has been serialized; the first of the five parts became available on October 5, and the rest are being spaced throughout the month.

For newbies, a bit of backstory: In 1967, Bob and wife Kathy, ensconced in their new Burbank home, decided to do a little more for trick-or-treaters than drop candy in their bags. When kids knocked on the door, it opened to reveal a “mad lab” complete with Frankenstein’s Monster (a dummy strapped to a diagonal operating table) and crackling lab equipment. For the next several years,...
