Descendants: The Rise of Red features seven original songs and a new cover of “So This Is Love.” The film and the Descendants: The Rise of Red Original Soundtrack will be released on Friday, July 12, 2024.

Jennifer Phang directs from a screenplay by Dan Frey and Russell Sommer, with Suzanne Todd and Gary Marsh executive producing. Ashley Wallen (The Greatest Showman) is the choreographer and Torin Borrowdale (Searching) wrote the score.

Today, Disney+ released a new teaser and poster for Descendants: The Rise of Red, the next installment in the mega-hit Descendants franchise that features the teenage progeny of iconic Disney heroes and villains. The music-driven Disney Original movie starts streaming Friday, July 12, exclusively on Disney+, followed by a special encore Friday, August 9, at 8:00 p.m. Edt/Pdt on Disney Channel.

The latest teaser introduces Kylie Cantrall as Red, princess of the hostile kingdom of Wonderland and Auradon’s newest Villain Kid (aka Vk), who is caught “red-handed” by Malia Baker, who plays Chloe, the daughter of Cinderella and King Charming.

Descendants: The Rise of Red follows Red, the rebellious daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe, Cinderella’s perfectionist daughter. The Disney+ film, which is now titled Descendants: The Rise of Red, has cast Paolo Montalban as King Charming. Fun on its own, this news becomes considerably more exciting when you remember that Brandy Norwood is playing Cinderella; she and Montalban previously played Cinderella and Prince Charming in an iconic production for ABC’s Wonderful World of Disney back in 1997.

Brandy returns to her role as Cinderella in a new Descendants movie for Disney+. A modernization of Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1957 musical, Walt Disney Television's Cinderella was the first adaption to feature a Black woman in the role of the fairytale princess. Airing on ABC in 1997, Cinderella saw Filipino actor Paolo Montalbán as the Prince, opposite Brandy as Cinderella. The late pop legend Whitney Houston also starred as the Fairy Godmother, and Whoopi Goldberg as the Queen. Drawing in 60 million viewers when it aired, Cinderella's cast recently reunited at a 25-year anniversary special on ABC, celebrating the film's groundbreaking diversity and lasting legacy in Hollywood.

Now, IndieWire reveals that Brandy will return as Cinderella in a new Descendants film for Disney+. Based on a script by Dan Frey and Russell Sommer, the movie is currently using the working title The Pocketwatch, and will also feature pop star Rita Ora as The Queen of Hearts.

Rita Ora and Brandy (Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella) have joined China Anne McClain, Kylie Cantrall, and Dara Reneé in The Pocketwatch, a new entry in Disney+’s Descendants franchise. Ora will be playing Alice in Wonderland‘s Queen of Hearts and Brandy’s on board to reprise her role as Cinderella in the new musical directed by Jennifer Phang (The Flight Attendant).

The cast also includes Malia Baker (The Babysitter’s Club), Ruby Rose Turner (Coop and Cami Ask the World), Morgan Dudley (Jagged Little Pill on Broadway), and Joshua Colley (Senior Year). Melanie Paxson will return as Fairy Godmother, a character she played in the previous Descendants films.

One of Disney’s most beloved princesses is coming back onscreen. Brandy will reprise her role as Cinderella for a new Disney+ film in the “Descendants” franchise.

Brandy previously famously portrayed the fairytale princess in a TV film adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” musical, which was watched by 60 million viewers when it first aired on ABC in 1997. The film’s inclusive and diverse casting — which included Brandy as the first Black woman to play Cinderella, Whitney Houston and Whoopi Goldberg as the Fairy Godmother and the Queen, and Paolo Montalbán as a Filipino Prince Charming — was widely regarded as groundbreaking, and the film has since become considered a classic. This August, Brandy reunited with the cast of the film for an ABC special to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The new “Descendants” film, currently under the working title “The Pocketwatch,” will be the first time in the role since the 1997 film.
