Kris Collins in The Grue Rume (2020)

Five Sitcoms That Replaced A Character With Pretty Much the Exact Same Character
Image
When Roseanne Barr was fired from the rebooted Roseanne in 2018, the producers decided that, in order to continue, the series would need to change. Instead of the sarcastic loudmouth Roseanne Conner as the center of her family, John Goodman’s Dan Conner, Laurie Metcalf’s Jackie Harris and Sara Gilbert’s Darlene Conner stepped in to fill the void, making it a show with a bit less attitude and an increased focus on grief in light of Barr’s character’s death. These changes allowed the show — now rebranded as The Conners — to last for seven seasons.

However, not all shows are smart enough to fully pivot after a cast departure. Instead, many just end up replacing that person with a new character who has pretty much the exact same personality. The hope, presumably, is to keep whatever dynamics a show already possesses.

Here are some of the best — and worst — examples…...

The Iron Claws Doris Casting Pays Off A Funny Detail In Jim Carreys Comedy From 27 Years Ago
Image
Maura Tierney plays Doris Adkisson, the matriarch of the famous Von Erich wrestling family from Texas who suffered immense tragedy throughout their lives. Tierney's casting as Doris in the Von Erich family biopic, The Iron Claw, was foreshadowed by her previous role in Liar Liar, in which Jim Carrey's character does the Von Erichs' signature clawhold move. Liar Liar featuring the Von Erich family's signature move is demonstrative of the lasting impact they had on pro wrestling.

Maura Tierney's role as Doris in Sean Durkin's The Iron Claw paid off a hilarious bit from the Jim Carrey comedy movie she starred in 27 years ago. In 2023, The Iron Claw brought the true story of the Von Erich brothers to life by showcasing the beloved Texas pro wrestlers' rise to fame in the '80s as well as the darker side of the supposedly "cursed" family's history.

Tierney played the famous family's matriarch,...

Byron Cherry
'Dukes of Hazzard' star Christopher Mayer dies. Co-star Byron Cherry remembers him 'like a brother.'
Byron Cherry
Christopher Mayer (pictured, far left), best known for his 19 episode-long stint as Vance Duke in the 1982-83 season of Dukes of Hazzard, passed away on July 23 in Sherman Oaks at age 57.

During his time on the popular sitcom, Mayer was joined onscreen by Byron Cherry, who played his brother, Coy Duke. The two men were brought onto the show when contract disputes with the show’s main leading men, John Schneider and Tom Wopat, forced CBS to scramble to keep Dukes on the air. The network cast the two men quickly and explained that Schneider and Wopat’s characters had joined the Nascar circuit.

Santa Barbara's Christopher "Chip" Mayer Has Passed Away At Age 57
According to Brbtv, actor Christopher "Chip" Mayer died unexpectedly on Saturday evening. He was 57.

His fiancee Catherine, whom Mayer was planning to marry next month, had been out of town shooting a new project when she received the news.

Born George Charles Mayer III on February 21, 1954, Mayer grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey, the eldest of seven children.

He graduated from Colgate University with a degree in business. After a year of the business world in New York, he decided to give acting a shot.

He played Vance Duke on The Dukes Of Hazzard, opposite Byron Cherry's Coy, during the fifth season of the show when Tom Wopat and John Schneider were off the show.

Soap fans will remember Mayer from his run as T.J. Daniels on Santa Barbara. He said in a 1988 interview with Soap Opera Digest he wasn't completely satisfied with his role: "Not really, but...

The Dukes

by Lex Walker

It's rather unfortunate that it took until 1983 for The Dukes of Hazzard to get the cartoon adaptation treatment. Not because it deserved its ink sooner, but because at that point in the live-action series Luke (Tom Wopat) and Bo (John Schneider) had moved on (albeit briefly) leaving their "cousins" Vance (Christopher Mayer) and Coy (Byron Cherry) to engage in the show's misadventures for a year. So when Hanna Barbera adapted the show into a cartoon, instead of just making the main characters Bo and Luke (who were the obvious choice...
