The best-selling author of all time, as of this writing, remains William Shakespeare, a little-known British playwright from Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire, who lived from April 23, 1564 to April 23, 1616. He wrote some obscure plays that you've probably never heard of. Stuff like "Cardenio," "The Two Noble Kinsmen," and "Edward III." He's not nearly as well-known as his contemporaries Ben Jonson, Philip Henslowe, or John Fletcher.
But I kid the Bard. There isn't a student in the English-speaking world who wasn't forced through at least four or five Shakespeare plays in high school. Raise your hand if you still remember a Shakespearean soliloquy you were required to memorize for your 10th-grade English class.
After Shakespeare, some of the best-selling authors of all time include Agatha Christie, Danielle Steele, Harold Robbins, J.K. Rowling, Eiichiro Oda (the author of the "One Piece" manga), and Jackie Collins. No doubt you've explored some of these authors in your spare time at airports.

Tornadoes can be terrifying, but that doesn't stop people from watching a movie about them. In real life, there are courageous storm chasers who start their potentially dangerous journey with one mission: to look a storm in its eye, or rather, get up close and personal to study it or admire its scary beauty. While when this happens in real life, fear takes over those at home getting alerts and warnings from meteorologists to take cover, movies like Twistersare entertainingly whirling up the charts. According to Flix Patrol, the 2024 film is among the top movies to watch on Prime Video.
It hasn't left the top ten on the chart and is currently staying in the top three. Twisters is a sequel to Twister (1996), which starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. The Glen Powell-led production follows a clashing group of storm chasers who investigate a tornado outbreak in Oklahoma.

The 21st century has been wonderful for fans of Marvel live-action productions. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, the Fox X-Men series, the MCU… you name it. Before that, the situation outside the comics was a mess. While DC was doing well, Marvel was struggling to get something decent going. In the ‘70s, a decision was made to focus on the small screen, so shows like The Incredible Hulk and The Amazing Spider-Man were made, but they weren't hits for the ages. The third production was even worse.
There were high hopes for Dr. Strange when it aired as a CBS movie on Sept. 6, 1978. The idea of the movie was conceived by writer, director, and producer Philip DeGuere, best known for his later work in Magnum P.I., Jag, and NCIS. According to Jessica Walter, who played the villain, Morgan Le Fay, DeGuere “wanted everything to be perfect.” Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

I've recently been on a disaster movie kick. Perhaps it's because everything seems a little bleak right now. Or perhaps I just needed something brainless to watch — disaster movies can be fun, but let's be honest: they're not exactly high art. As I went from one disaster movie to another, a curious theme began to arise. In addition to these films all following a similar set-up, in which we see famous landmarks and buildings completely obliterated by destruction, they also all seem to share a similar plot element: the hero/main character is almost always going through a divorce or separation, or already divorced from their spouse. And in almost every case, the impending disaster ends up rekindling that seemingly dead relationship.
This got me thinking: is there any sort of deeper meaning here? Speaking from experience, I can tell you the act of divorce can seem like world-ending event...

2024 was a big year for movies and TV shows, with many skilled actors proving once again that they're some of the most important performers of the decade. While there are plenty of actors who have long since had their breakout roles and are veterans of the industry, there are just as many who are carving out their niche in film and television. Though having a good 2024 doesn't necessarily mean that the coming years will be as successful, it's difficult to imagine that these stars will fade in the coming years thanks to their newly minted legacies.
Whether they were in one of the best indie movies of 2024 or a recording-breaking blockbuster, these actors made their mark in movies and television this year. For some, their biggest projects were only released within the last few weeks, but even this was enough to elevate their relevance, especially with awards season coming up.

Glen Powell's 2024 action movie breaks a streaming record held by Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winner, Oppenheimer. The Nolan film, which stars Cillian Murphy as the titular scientist, arrived on Peacock's streaming platform exclusively on February 16 this year, seven months after its release date on July 21, 2023, and it soon became the No. 1 Pay-1 film on the platform within its first 14 days.
According to Deadline, Twisters has topped Oppenheimer's record as the new Peacock's biggest Pay-1 film ever in its first 14 days. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the sequel to Michael Crichton's 1996 blockbuster Twister stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Powell in the lead roles and was an even bigger hit at the box office than the original film. The sequel broke a record at its opening as the No.1 box office debut for a natural disaster film and ended its run with $267.7 million domestically.

A Twister sequel could have come much sooner than Twisters in 2024 if it were up to Bill Paxton, but, sadly, the actor's idea for a second movie never actualized. The 1996 disaster film, directed by Jan de Bont and written by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin, starred Paxton as Bill Harding, one of the two leads. Beside him in the Twister cast was Helen Hunt, who played Jo. The two characters were storm chasers (and estranged husband and wife) who came together in an attempt to deploy their tornado research device ("Dorothy") by placing it in a tornado's path.
Twister was the second highest-grossing movie of 1996, earning over $495 million against an $8892 million budget. Bill Paxton's disaster film also received Oscar nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound, but lost to Independence Day (1996's highest-grossing movie) and The English Patient, respectively.

Twister took inspiration from a classic screwball comedy, bringing a unique romcom twist to the disaster genre. The relationship between Bill and Jo in Twister mirrors the bickering, but endearing dynamic of Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday. By infusing elements of a romantic comedy, Twister became more engaging and relatable than a standard disaster film.
Twister may be an action-packed disaster movie about storm chasers coming face-to-face with destructive tornadoes, but the film took its primary inspiration from a surprising source: a classic 1940 romantic comedy. Crichton had wanted to write a movie about the thrilling world of storm chasers since seeing a documentary about storm-chasing on PBS, but for a long time, he didnt have a story to go with it.

When you think of 1996's Twister, what comes to mind? Cinema's most unlucky cow goes without saying. There are the Academy Award-nominated visual effects from Industrial Light & Magic; a roll call of the era's best character actors. For those of us who spent our tender childhoods watching Twister, that formative experience probably spawned either daydreams about becoming an adult storm chaser or a lifelong entrancement with tornadoes (or both). Yet I ask you: what is Twister without estranged lovers Jo (Helen Hunt) and Bill Harding (Bill Paxton) pouring their hearts out in the dramatically cascading rain? Or making out in the aftermath of an F5 tornado they illogically survived? Everyone remembers the cow. We come back for the bickering sexual tension, the unresolved feelings, and the irrepressible love declarations. Twister never hides its romantic comedy origins, it just dips them into the disaster and horror genres for extra rizz. This...

When Jan de Bont's "Twister" was released in 1996, it was warmly but not enthusiastically greeted by critics. Some praised its atmosphere and colorful characters, and most were impressed with the film's expensive digital VFX, the extensive use of which was considered novel at the time. However, just as many critics pointed out that the script (by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin) was a little generic and the plot was unbearably simple. Audiences flocked to "Twister," though, and the film ultimately made over $495 million worldwide. "Twister" is not a great work of cinema, but it bears a lot of goodwill.
Fast-forward to 2024, and all the criticisms of "Twister" might also be applied to Lee Isaac Chung's "Twisters," the new quasi-sequel to the first film. Twister's cast is stacked and the pace is relentless, with the majority being excellent. The CG holds up well, while some acting is slightly uneven and Bill Paxton feels a little miscast. Twister is comfort viewing with high entertainment value, and its quality genuinely holds up.

Twisters may best the original in terms of reviews, but surpassing its box office success and becoming the year's second highest-grossing film will be a tall order. The sequel shifts focus to a new cast while maintaining the thrilling tornado-chasing narrative of Twister, setting it up for box office success. Twisters needs a strong box office performance to cover its hefty budget and to surpass Dune 2's impressive draw.
Early reviews suggest that Twisters will best the original 1996 film's lukewarm critical score, but the standalone sequel will have a much more difficult time beating another Twister record regarding the movie's impressive box office draw. Co-written by Michael Crichton, the novelist behind Jurassic Park, 1996's Twister remains one of the most iconic disaster movies of all time. Co-written by Michael Crichton, the novelist behind Jurassic Park, 1996's Twister remains one of the most iconic disaster movies of all time. This week sees the release of Twisters, the second entry in the Twister saga that no one really wanted or needed. I mean, the first movie came out so long ago that audiences were positively blown away at the sight of a CGI cow flying through the air, as if it were something from Avatar or a train pulling into a train station.
While the co-writer of Twister, the late Michael Crichton, may have gone to great lengths to create the plot lines for novels like Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain and The Great Train Robbery, for the tornado-based blockbuster he admitted that he borrowed heavily from a TV documentary and a classic screwball comedy.
Reportedly, Crichton became “fascinated” with tornadoes after seeing them discussed in an episode of Nova, the long-running PBS science show. But while he and his wife Anne-Marie Martin, who co-wrote Twister, discussed the possibility of...

Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell have fantastic chemistry that enhances the sequel. The special effects in Twisters are excellent, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. Despite forgetting a potential environmental message, character development and the action grounds the film.
When people think of movies that deserve some kind of sequel or continuation, Twister probably isn't at the top of many lists. The 1996 disaster movie was a box office hit at the time of release and has retained fan-favorite status over the years, but nothing about it was begging for a sequel. However, thanks to Hollywood's franchise-happy mindset, we're getting Twisters, a movie whose announcement a while back got me to scoff. Now, though, I can admit I was wrong to roll my eyes here.

For nearly as long as movies have been a form of mass entertainment, the disaster genre has brought excitement and thrills to the big screen, dating back to 1933's "Deluge," which picks up in the aftermath of a massive earthquake in New York. At some point, these films became big business, commanding big budgets in Hollywood. Look no further than 1998, when both "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact" opened mere months from one another, offering radically different takes on the whole asteroid colliding with the Earth scenario. The '90s also gifted us a very important entry in this enduring genre in the form of director Jan de Bont's "Twister."

Twisters has earned a score of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. This exceeds the score earned by the original 1996 Twister by 13%. It remains to be seen if the movie's audience score will be an improvement on Twister's 58%.
Twisters has bested the original movie on Rotten Tomatoes. The 1996 disaster movie Twister, which starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, was a smash hit, becoming the second highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide behind Roland Emmerich's competing alien invasion disaster movie Independence Day. The upcoming Twisters is a standalone sequel to the original hit, centering a new trio of performers, namely Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos, though the cast also includes Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, David Corenswet, Kiernan Shipka, and Paul Scheer.

Twister's Dorothy device is a scientifically accurate tornado research tool inspired by real-life technology. The barrel-shaped device contains hundreds of sensors that gather data on wind speed, funnel structure, and more. The Noaa National Severe Storms Laboratory consulted on the film to ensure scientific accuracy and realism.
1996's classic disaster thriller Twister centered around two scientists testing out a new piece of technology that would help warn people of tornadoes sooner, and the device nicknamed "Dorothy" has some logical science behind it. Directed by Jan de Bont and based on a screenplay by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park) and Anne Marie-Martin, Twister was celebrated for its ground-breaking special effects. The Academy Award-nominated blockbuster went on to gross nearly $500 million on a budget of roughly $92 million, and became a benchmark for disaster films in American cinema.

Twisters whipped up a frenzy in London on Monday night as the Lee Isaac Chung disaster epic touched down at Cineworld Leicester Square for its European premiere. Before any tornadoes hit the screen, audience members got some early thrills courtesy of a very special guest in the crowd: Tom Cruise.
The Hollywood superstar attended the screening in support of his Top Gun: Maverick pals, including Glen Powell, who stars in the Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. release opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones, Harry Hadden-Paton and Anthony Ramos. There’s another Top Gun connection: That film’s director, Joseph Kosinski, is credited with story by credit on Twisters, which was written by Mark L. Smith based on characters created by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin. Cruise has also long been close to Steven Spielberg, who executive produced the new Twisters as well as the original 1996 film.

The writer of Jurassic Park. The director of Speed. The star of Mad About You. The quaint Clinton-era notion that a major action blockbuster could be produced with, as the major antagonist, an atmospheric condition and not swarthy terrorists from the Middle East or France. Twister is so 1990s it hurts, but the pain isn’t as exquisite as revisiting a movie you once, for any number of pubescent reasons, loved as a child and now realize is a whirling roar of detritus.
When Twister came out, the traditional ’80s model blockbuster appeared to be on its last legs. Films like John McTiernan’s The Last Action Hero and Kevin Reynolds’s Waterworld made the idea of a central masculine anchor, be he mountainously monolithic or sensitively willowy, seem as ruinous as letting a young Turk hotshot direct your studio’s big epic did in the early ’80s during the...

Twisters, the Glen Powell-Daisy Edgar Jones sequel to the 1996 action movie is looking at a $50M start, per tracking, when it opens July 19. Lower end of pic’s forecast is at $45M.
Like everything in the current marketplace, walk-up business and a heat wave are driving all forecasts higher than where tracking has been spotting figures, but this movie always was figured by distribution sources as one of summer’s wins. The question is, with all the tornado warnings going on this summer, will people want to watch havoc wreaked on the screen? Well, it didn’t stop them back in 1996, when the first movie, released by Warner Bros and directed by Jan de Bont opened to $41M and went on to make $241.7M domestic.

Exclusive: Oscar-winning Free Solo directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi have come aboard as part of the package to direct Eruption, the novel by Michael Crichton and James Patterson that was just published atop every bestseller list.
The duo will be in the center of meetings to be held next week in which they’ll pitch the book, a large scale earth-threatening thriller about a volcano explosion in Hawaii. At the same time, Jim and Vasarhelyi might also be directing a documentary on the life of the late great Crichton.
Eruption is a big scale disaster novel tale that Crichton spent 20 years working on before his untimely death. The novel just went out to studios and other major buyers. It’s expected to be a big sale, continuing the legacy of the brilliant author behind everything from Jurassic Park, Westworld, Twister, ER and so many others.

With great action comes great effort. Glen Powell teased “one of the most incredible action sequences of all time” in this summer’s Twisters, coming July 19.
The actor recounted his experience shooting the storm sequence in a Fandango’s Big Ticket interview, which he says “all happens in a oner.” The appearance was pegged to the film’s tickets going on sale.
“We shot that in December, with a rain machine,” Powell says in the clip. “One of the coldest nights I’ve ever experienced, getting dragged across a pool by a wire. I think it was the most physical thing that I’ve ever done.”
Daisy Edgar-Jones, Powell’s Twisters co-star, agrees “completely,” she says.
“You’re talking about humans getting sucked up into a tornado,” Powell continues. “But you’re recreating what it’s like to be getting hit by debris and all that stuff. So you’re...

Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters sequel will receive its Italian premiere at this year’s Taormina Film Festival, which takes place July 12 to July 19 in southern Italy.
Twisters will screen at the festival’s historic Teatro Antico amphitheater. This year’s event will mark the festival’s 70th edition. The film will be released in Italian theatres on July 17 via Warner Bros. Pictures and will hit North American cinemas on July 19 via Universal Pictures.
“I am grateful to Warner Bros. for this wonderful gift, which confirms one of our programming guidelines: relying on diversity of styles,” said Marco Müller, artistic director of the Taormina Film Festival. “With Twisters, Lee Isaac Chung has gone from his Academy Award-winning drama Minari to deliver a spectacular cinematic event speaking to an even wider audience.”
Twisters is billed as “a sweeping current-day chapter of the 1996 blockbuster.” The film stars Golden Globe nominee Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser, and Glen Powell who plays Tyler Owens, a charming and reckless social media superstar. The synopsis reads: Two opposing forces, come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes.
The cast also features Golden Globe nominee Anthony Ramos (In The Heights), Brandon Perea (Nope), Golden Globe awardee Maura Tierney (Beautiful Boy), and Sasha Lane (American Honey), along with David Corenswet (the upcoming Superman), Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders), Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Nik Dodani (Atypical).
Producers are Frank Marshall (the Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones franchises) and Patrick Crowley (the Jurassic Park and Bourne franchises). The film was written by Mark L. Smith, screenwriter of The Revenant, from a story by Joseph Kosinski, based on characters created by Michael Crichton & Anne-Marie Martin.
The Taormina Film Festival is promoted and organised by the Fondazione Taormina Arte Sicilia with the support of the Assessorato del Turismo dello Sport e dello Spettacolo della Regione Siciliana of the Sicilia Film Commission, the Municipality of Taormina and the Ministry of Culture–General Directorate for Cinema and Audiovisual (MiC).

Steven Spielberg influenced Twisters by having Anthony Ramos use his own dialect. Spielberg hand-picked the director for the original Twister and played a key role in casting Helen Hunt. Spielberg's enthusiasm for the script contributed to the sequel being green-lit.

“Don’t breathe. Don’t look back,” commanded the tagline for the movie Twister from 1996. Apparently, that’s not a warning that Universal Pictures wants to heed. Instead, they’re looking back to the ’90s with a new adventure about storm chasers and the flying cows in their wake with the upcoming sequel Twisters.
That said, first trailer for Twisters features no familiar faces. Not only do we see no characters played by actors who sadly passed in the interim, such as Bill Paxton’s Bill or Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Rusty, but also missing is Helen Hunt’s protagonist Jo.
In their place is a new cast, primarily Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing) as Kate Cooper and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) as Tyler Owens. Based on the trailer, the script by Mark L. Smith focuses on the braggart Tyler luring Kate back into the world of stormchasing after an expedition gone wrong.

Back in 1996, the Twister cast, outside of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton was largely unknown. At the time, not too many of them were famous. However, in the years since the film, much of that has changed and much of the Twister cast has gone on to fame both in front and behind the camera.
Helen Hunt was arguably the film’s biggest star in the cast back in ’96, but she wasn’t the first choice for the movie. Before the role of Dr. Jo Harding went to her, Jurassic Park standout Laura Dern, Bridget Fonda, and Kate Mulgrew almost wore the good doctor’s white tank top and reinforced mud-stompers. Initially, Tom Hanks eyed the role of Bill Harding but ultimately felt Twister wasn’t the right fit for his brand of character creation. Other actors floated for Bill Harding include Kevin Costner, Michael Keaton, Kurt Russell, Richard Gere,...

Other actors floated for Bill Harding include Kevin Costner, Michael Keaton, Kurt Russell, Richard Gere,...

Twenty-seven years after the release of the blockbuster disaster film Twister (watch it Here), Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment have finally put a follow-up on the fast track to release – but they’re not calling it a sequel. Scheduled to receive a theatrical release on July 19, 2024, Twisters has been described as a “new chapter” in what is about to become a franchise… and during an interview with Vogue, cast member Glen Powell – who can currently be seen on the big screen in the romantic comedy Anyone but You – confirmed that the film tells a standalone story. But even without any connection to the original film, he believes that it’s something that will be able to connect to everyone around the world.
Powell told Vogue (with thanks to Deadline for sharing the text) that Twisters is “definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one.

Twister, the classic disaster film starring Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton, is finally getting a follow-up, Twisters, but it’s taken nearly 30 years to get to it. Directed by Jan de Bont from a screenplay by Anne-Marie Martin and Michael Crichton, Twister follows a group of storm chasers attempting to place a device inside a tornado in a bid to expand their understanding and research about them.
First released in 1996, Twister was a one-of-a-kind movie-going experience. On a budget between $88-92 million, the film grossed nearly $500 million at the global box office. Twisters, a sequel to the original film starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos, was officially announced in 2022 and the film finally has a July 2024 theatrical release date. Plot details are currently under wraps, but Twisters is expected to follow the daughter of Jo and Bill from the original film as she continues in her parents’ footsteps.

Scheduled to receive a theatrical release on July 19, 2024, Twisters is being described as a “new chapter” in what is about to become a franchise… and it just rounded out its cast. The cast of Twisters grows with the addition of Brandon Perea to the cast. Variety reports that the actor, who appeared in Jordan Peele's sci-fi thriller Nope last year, has signed on for a role in the Twister sequel. Details haven't been revealed about the role Perea will play, but he'll be joining previously announced cast members Daisy Edgar-Jones (Where the Crawdads Sing), Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), and Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts). Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) is directing the feature film with the screenplay coming from Mark L. Smith (The Revenant).
Aside from his role in Nope, Perea can also be recognized from his role in the Netflix series The Oa. He also appeared in the superhero series Doom Patrol. His other film credits include roles in Dance Camp and American Insurrection. The actor had also made some waves by throwing his name into the...

That new cast member is (as reported by Deadline), Anthony Ramos of In the Heights and the upcoming film Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Details on the characters being played by Powell and Ramos have not been revealed. We do know that Edgar-Jones is playing a former storm chaser who works a desk job after surviving a disastrous tornado encounter.

A follow-up to the 1996 disaster film Twister (watch it Here) has been in and out of development for over twenty-five years. A few months ago, it was announced that one is finally going to go into production, with Minari director Lee Isaac Chung at the helm and Daisy Edgar-Jones of Fresh and Where the Crawdads Sing in the lead. And while that film, titled Twisters, heads toward its July 19, 2024 release date, Insider got some information on the demise of the Twister 2 that Twister star Helen Hunt was recently developing with Grammy and Tony winner Daveed Diggs and his Blindspotting co-writer Rafael Casal.
Diggs told Insider, “I’m not going to get into it, mostly because I’m probably going to misremember things. But all I’ll say is there was an opportunity where we were talking about that, and it didn’t happen, and the reasons that it didn’t happen are potentially shady.

Less than a week after Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment entered early talks with Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) to helm Twisters, the studios have announced a release date for the Twister sequel. Twisters will be released in theaters on July 19, 2024, just a week before Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie.
The Twister sequel has been penned by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant), and it’s said that Amblin’s Steven Spielberg “flipped” for the script and the production was fast-tracked. The hope is to bring back Helen Hunt as Dr. Jo Harding. It will focus on the daughter she had with Bill Paxton’s character, who has caught the same “storm-chasing bug” that her parents did. The original Twister was directed by Jan de Bont and written by Micahel Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin. The movie followed “Bill and Jo Harding, advanced storm chasers on the brink of divorce, must join together to...
