‘The Barn Part III’ Exclusive Poster Reveal + Felissa Rose & More Horror Icons Join the Cast
Image
Indie fan favorites The Barn and The Barn Part II, both of which are now streaming on Screambox, celebrated Halloween in throwback style, and the success of those films has paved the way for The Barn Part III. Director Justin Seaman is now raising finishing funds for the project over on Indiegogo, and Bloody Disgusting has the exclusive poster reveal.

Additionally, we’ve learned that horror icons Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), William Ragsdale (Fright Night) and John Kassir (“Tales from the Crypt”) have joined The Barn Part III.

The Barn Part III is set to be the final chapter of the Halloween horror franchise, and Seaman says it’s going to be “a little bit more serious” than the previous two installments. He teases, “Of course we’re going to have monsters killing and splattering guts everywhere, but the stakes are a little higher. We’re going to wrap this...

The Barn (2016)
The Barn Part III: retro slasher sequel adds John Kassir, the voice of the Cryptkeeper, to the cast
The Barn (2016)
Eight years have passed since writer/director Justin M. Seaman brought us the 1989-set slasher The Barn (check out my review Here, get the movie Here). A sequel has followed in that time, and now Seaman is working on wrapping up the trilogy with a film appropriately titled The Barn Part III. The Barn and The Barn Part II (get that one Here) featured genre icons like Ari Lehman (who played young Jason Voorhees in the original Friday the 13th), legendary scream queen Linnea Quigley, drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs, Diana Prince (a.k.a. Darcy the Mail Girl), Troma’s own Lloyd Kaufman, and Hellraiser star Doug Bradley. The Barn Part III is also going to feature some familiar faces, as we’ve previously heard that the cast includes Children of the Corn‘s Courtney Gains and Kelli Maroney of Night of the Comet and Chopping Mall. In areas scattered throughout the United States, the third Saturday of every October is considered to be Sweetest Day, a holiday of sorts where you’re meant to “share romantic deeds or expressions, and acts of charity and kindness.” Plus sweets. Now, Deadline reports that Sweetest Day has been given the holiday slasher treatment by director Doug Hawley, who assembled a cast that includes Dorée Seay (Pens and Pencils), Alex MacNicoll (Brilliant Minds), Chris Labadie (If It Bleeds), Nate Boyer (The Terminal List), Deborah S. Craig (Meet Cute), Morgana Shaw (Hit Man), Andy Davoli (Stiletto), Russell Todd (Friday the 13th Part 2), Kelli Maroney (Chopping Mall), and Catherine Corcoran (Terrifier) to bring the story to life.

Hawley makes his feature debut with Sweetest Day, which sees Seay taking on the role of ‘survivor girl’ Mindy as she prepares for the battle of her life against the undead confederate soldier that nearly killed her once before.

Malls, Mayhem, and Murderbots: Celebrating ‘Chopping Mall’ and the Horrors of Retail
Image
On this day in 1986, a gang of sassy teens snuck into the Park Plaza Mall for a night of partying, hook-ups, and maybe a little light property damage. Unfortunately for them, the mall’s new security system wasn’t just state-of-the-art, it was armed, dangerous, and very eager to enforce after-hours rules with deadly precision.

Welcome to Chopping Mall, the gloriously schlocky sci-fi slasher that gave us killer robots, exploding heads, and the absolute blueprint for shopping mall carnage in horror cinema.

Directed by Jim Wynorski and produced by Roger Corman’s wife Julie Corman, Chopping Mall took a simple premise – teens locked in a mall with killer security droids – and ran full-tilt into cult-movie gold. With laser-eyed ‘Protectors’ going haywire thanks to a freak lightning storm, the film delivers a perfect cocktail of ‘80s neon, gore, and robot death-ray madness.

But what’s endured just as strongly as the...

HorRHIFFic 2025: ‘Staycation’ Review
Image
Stars: Sean Kenney, Olivia d’Abo, Bailey Sorrel, Gilles Stricher, Kelli Maroney, Laurene Landon, Eileen Dietz, Shawn C. Phillips, Catherine Lasalle, Lilly Ivring, Crystal J. Huang | Written by Emile Haris | Directed by Russ Emanuel

Obviously inspired by the 2020 pandemic, Staycation is a brilliantly dark-humoured look at that bizarre point in time where the world stood still and people argued about what was the “truth” about the situation on a daily basis. In fact Russ Emanuel’s film is probably the most on-the-nose “retelling” of that time – but with a wonderful skewed, laugh out loud, look at how insane the pandemic was. Only the pandemic is not of the “flu” variety – it’s more a zombie apocalypse, with the viruses victims here turning into “wanderers” (aka zombies).

The film’s central narrative follows Professor Edward Bellows (Sean Kenney), a lead virologist striving to develop a cure for the deadly Nix virus. Opening...

15 Cheesy '80s Horror Movies To Watch With Your Friends
Image
When it comes to cheesy horror movies, there was no decade better than the 1980s. The best films from this era kicked things into absolute hyperdrive as excessive gore, outrageous special effects, and campy, over-the-top performances became the norm. This was a period when filmmakers were experimenting with new types of horror movies as directors paid tribute to classics of the past with incredible homages, carved out new styles that better represented the social and political anxieties of that time, and pushed audiences out of their comfort zone with some truly terrifying films.

The cheesiest horrors of the 1980s included scary slashers that saw serial killers relentlessly pursue their victims, hilarious comedy horrors that featured punk rock brain-eating zombies, or even alien clowns invading Earth. While more serious horrors can make for a terrifying film-viewing experience, when gathered together with a group of friends, a cheesy 1980s horror will usually be the best pick.

Chopping Mall: 1986 classic is getting a novelization from Encyclopocalypse Publications
Image
As far as I’m concerned, director Jim Wynorski’s 1986 film Chopping Mall (watch it Here) ranks up there as one of the most entertaining horror movies of the ’80s, which is the decade that brought a lot of my favorite horror movies into the world. It’s also a movie that doesn’t seem to get referenced often enough, and doesn’t get as much respect as it deserves – even if James Wan wants to remake it and Shout Factory TV aired it for 24 hours straight on Black Friday. So I’m glad to see that Chopping Mall is getting some love from the folks at Encyclopocalypse Publications, who have announced that they’re teaming up with Shout Factory and author Brian G. Berry for a Chopping Mall novelization!

Written by Wynorski and Steve Mitchell, Chopping Mall has the following synopsis: Some people will kill for a bargain… and...

‘The Old Ones’ Trailer – Low Budget Lovecraft Movie Goes Heavy on the Practical Effects
Image
Another Lovecraft-inspired horror movie is on the way, with our friends over at Rue Morgue debuting the trailer for director Chad Ferrin’s upcoming indie The Old Ones this week.

Breaking Glass Pictures will summon The Old Ones on VOD March 19, 2024.

You can watch the official trailer for The Old Ones below, which previews an impressive array of old school practical effects that should make this low budget effort a fun watch.

In the film…

“In 1930, sea captain Russel Marsh saw the light, and for 93 years his body was not his own. Inhabited by a Great Old One, he committed unspeakable acts in the name of the Esoteric Order of Dagon. Now free, he is in search of a way to go back in time to reverse the horrors wrought upon the world. But the cult has other plans, and will stop at nothing to destroy him.”

Night of the Comet: How This ‘80s Zombie Movie Is a Better Anti-Christmas Film Than Die Hard or Lethal Weapon
Image
“Better than Die Hard.” Speak these words at any Christmas party, and someone will be barefoot as Alabama and ready to discuss this further before you can pour another scoop of eggnog, but you add, “And Lethal Weapon,” and now you have a two-front holiday war to the soundtrack of Silver Bells. The battle for the title of best anti-Christmas movie is typically waged between the two ‘80s cop movies.

Lethal Weapon stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as two mismatched officers thrown together by their superior in the holiday season, during which they uncover a drug smuggling operation run by ex-military and almost get themselves killed. Die Hard stars Bruce Willis as a New York detective, visiting his wife in LA at her employer’s Christmas party when burglars take the staff hostage, and Willis's John McClane becomes a one-man army who takes on the team of professionals.

‘Night of the Comet’ – A Feel-Good Genre Classic About the End of the World
Image
At a time when nuclear anxiety was both real and common, Thom Eberhardt went against the grain and made a quirky genre movie about the end of the world. Of course, the catastrophic event shown in Night of the Comet wasn’t the result of unleashed weapons of mass destruction. No, this story’s obliteration of (most) life on Earth was brought on by a less obvious force: a passing comet on par with the one that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Hollywood and the like have never been opposed to putting fears of nuclear strike and fallout on screen, but nothing made back in the ‘80s quite compares to Eberhardt’s doomsday tale of two valley girls looking for signs of life in disaster-stricken SoCal.

The filmmaker behind 1984’s Sole Survivor, the disquieting hidden gem about one woman’s brush with death, later returned that same year with something lighthearted,...

This '80s Cult Classic Influenced 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'
Image
Most of humanity has turned to dust. Some have mutated into zombies. And even fewer are just trying to survive. In the 1984 cult classic Night of the Comet, teenage sisters Reggie (Catherine Mary Stewart) and Sam (Kelli Maroney) fight to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. They encounter sinister scientists, and demented mutants, and have to navigate a world that has completely shifted over the night. Their prefrontal cortexes haven’t even finished developing. They have to make sense of their new reality. But the sisters prove to be capable of taking on all that a post-apocalyptic California can throw their way. Like many films, Night of the Comet has aged like wine, better and more appreciated as time goes on. Though it was regarded as a B movie, it influenced the creation of another girl who was also skilled at fighting off hellish fiends: Buffy Summers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Best Horror Movies on Shudder Right Now
Image
Shudder is a streaming service that is specifically dedicated to the horror genre, so it’s only fitting that we here on Arrow in the Head should compile a list of the Best Horror Movies on Shudder Right Now. As with all streamers, Shudder has movies that come and go on a regular basis, but if you head over there today here are some of the best movies you can find on the service:

Night Of The Living Dead (1968)

Yes, George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead seems to be available on nearly every streaming service there is, and that’s because the movie is in the public domain due to the copyright notice accidentally being left off the film print. When you’re a streaming service that deals specifically with the horror genre, it would be insane if you didn’t have Night of the Living Dead...

Night of the Comet (1984) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Night of the Comet was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

1984, the year of many interests and fears for Americans, from fears of a nuclear attack still remaining to a love-hate relationship with consumerism, American films explored teenage life in all its aspects. Some of these films were more memorable and on point for life and fears of the American teenager from living in the valley in Valley Girl, survival like Red Dawn and The Zero Boys, and a whole lot more; the mid-1980s were filled with teen cinema, and some of it was definitely on the dark side. Night of the Comet (get it Here) was definitely on the bleaker side of things while mixing teenage life, consumerism, potential alien invasion, mutation,...

Chopping Mall (1986) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The 1980s were full of robots, lasers, odd fashion choices, and teen films, including the now cult film Chopping Mall (watch it Here). In this 1986 sci-fi film, a group of teenage friends and mall workers end up stuck in the Mall after closing hours when a trio of security robots are deployed for the first time.

In the 80s, anything futuristic or with robots seemed to get greenlit with budgets of varying levels and quality of varying degrees. Some of these films took themselves very seriously, too seriously even. However, Chopping Mall was one of those films with the perfect mixture of low budget, the right talent in front of and behind the cameras, and the right level of seriousness to its content and how it was approached. The film doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it doesn’t go full-on goofy, either. There is a “just right” aspect...

Night Of The Comet Remake Is 'Still Alive,' But In A Different Form, According To Roxanne Benjamin [Exclusive]
Image
"Since before recorded time, it had swung through the universe in an elliptical orbit so large that its very existence remained a secret of time and space; but now in the last few years of the 20th century, the visitor was returning."

The opening narration of Thom Eberhardt's 1984 post-apocalyptic gem "Night of the Comet" sets the stage for a sci-fi adventure featuring a pair of sisters ("The Last Starfighter" star Catherine Mary Stewart and "Chopping Mall" star Kelli Maroney) who wake up in the wake of a world-ending event. Released the same year as "Gremlins" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," "Comet" was one of the early mainstream carriers of the newly-established PG-13 label which allowed its targeted teen demographic to enjoy the thrills of zombies and scavenger skirmishes without having to beg mommy and daddy to chaperone. Showcasing adventurous youth protagonists and a disaster spectacle on...

James Wan Says He’d “Love to” Dive into a Remake of ‘Chopping Mall’ Someday
Image
Shopping costs an arm and a leg – literally – in Jim Wynorski‘s Chopping Mall, a cult classic horror movie from 1986 that horror master James Wan happens to be a big fan of.

Speaking with Slash Film this week, Wan expressed interest in someday putting his own stamp on Chopping Mall, set in a shopping mall (naturally) and centered on killer robots.

Wan tells the outlet, “I have many horror films that I think are just fun that I love, and I’m pretty sure the horror community shares them with me. I love movies like ‘Chopping Mall.’ I love ‘Night of the Creeps.’ These, to me, are just sort of fun horror films that I would love to be able to dive into one day, or do them but with the way that I make my films.”

As you may recall, Dry County Entertainment had acquired the remake rights to...

Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge exclusive clip puts a group of final girls in danger
Image
The horror anthology sequel Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge will be available to watch on the Shudder streaming service as of December 22nd – and today we’re proud to share an Exclusive clip from the film that shows not even stereotypical “final girls” are safe in this one! You can check it out in the embed above.

Our reviewer The Iceman called the first Scare Package (watch it Here) “one of the best times I’ve had all year” and gave it a 9/10 review. You can find out what our reviewer Tyler Nichols thought of the sequel by clicking This Link.

Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge immediately follows the events of the original with the survivors attending the funeral of “Rad Chad” Buckley, which quickly devolves into an elaborate series of death traps centered around Chad’s favorite films, forcing the guests to band together and...

Scare Package 2: Rad Chad’s Revenge Review
Image
Plot: When horror guru Rad Chad Buckley’s funeral turns into an elaborate series of hilarious death traps, the guests must band together and use the rules of horror to survive the bloody game.

Review: The first Scare Package released in 2020 on Shudder and provided an entertaining anthology film. With its practical effects and more meta approach, it stood out amongst the slew of horror anthologies that release yearly. It was both humorous and absurdly violent, so I was a big fan. But sequels are hard to pull off, let alone when dealing with something that’s so high concept. And where do you even take the “story” after the ending of the first film?

Well Scare Package 2: Rad Chad’s Revenge picks up shortly after the first: with some characters from the original attending the funeral of the film aficionado. Things take a very Saw-like approach with its wraparound segment.

‘Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge’ Review – A Fun and Bloody Love Letter to the Horror Genre
Image
Created by writer/director Aaron B. Koontz and writer Cameron Burns, the horror-comedy Scare Package was released on AMC Networks’ horror streaming platform Shudder in the summer of 2020. Scare Package is an anthology film that tells a series of blood-splattered, satirical horror stories from various directors, which are being recounted by Chad Buckley (Jeremy King), the owner of a video rental store called Rad Chad’s Horror Emporium. This year, Koontz and Burns have assembled a new team of directors for a sequel to Scare Package, the horror-comedy anthology Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge, which features the return of Chad Buckley, a character who feels like a combination of Joe Bob Briggs and Randy Meeks.

In addition to the impressively over the top practical effects, part of what makes Scare Package and Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge so much fun are the ways in which the anthologies parody common horror tropes,...

These Are the Only Four New Release Horror Movies Remaining in 2022
Image
This week is not only the first week of winter, officially beginning on December 21st, but the week is also capped off by Christmas Day on Sunday, December 25th. As you might imagine, it’s not exactly going to be a big week for new movie releases, with James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water likely dominating any and all movie conversations these next several days.

And don’t forget that Tommy Wirkola’s Christmas genre movie Violent Night is also still playing in theaters through Christmas, the film thus far slaying its way to 55 million worldwide!

What about New genre movies for the week, you ask? Well, there are only four new ones remaining for the entire rest of the year, so let’s take a look at those in one fell swoop.

Here’s all the new horror arriving December 19 – December 31, 2022!

New Trailer for 'Scare Package II: Rad Chad's Revenge' Horror Sequel
Image
"You can't kill pure evil." Shudder has revealed an official trailer for the fun horror anthology feature Scare Package II: Rad Chad's Revenge, a sequel to first Scare Package series that opened in 2020. This next one is set to start streaming on Shudder later in December. When horror guru Rad Chad Buckley's funeral turns into an elaborate series of hilarious death traps based on his favorite scary films, the guests must band together and use the rules of horror to survive the bloody game. The full cast includes Jeremy King, Zoe Graham, Rich Sommer, Kelli Maroney, Shakira Ja'nai Paye, Graham Skipper, Maria Olsen, and Byron Brown. This looks much funnier than it does scary, though there's ton of crazy gore and blood to be disgusted by anyway. And if you haven't seen the original, maybe it's time for a double feature to enjoy both. ›››

‘Night Caller’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Steve Railsback, Bai Ling, Susan Priver, Robert Miano, Silvia Spross, Kelli Maroney, Lew Temple, Robert Rhine, James MacPherson, Scott Vogel, Brandon Kirk, Kristi McHugh, Cheryl Cipriano | Written and Directed by Chad Ferrin

Night Caller opens with visions of a murder underneath the main credits before Clementine an operator for Jade Mei’s gets a call from the man she saw in the visions before he commits the crime for real.

And that murder serves notice to viewers that this isn’t going to be a Scream or Blumhouse style mainstream horror film. There are repeated gory closeups of a large knife entering the victim’s body. A shift of camera angle to some not so explicit shots that suggest the knife is getting shoved somewhere else. And the ranting killer taking the somehow still living woman’s scalp as a souvenir.

Less than ten minutes in and writer/director...
