46th ceremony unfolded amid growing anger within French film industry over cinema closures.

Albert Dupontel’s Bye Bye Morons topped the awards at a politically-charged 46th Césars ceremony on Friday evening (March 12), marked by growing anger within the French film industry over the ongoing closure of cinemas and other cultural spaces as part of anti-Covid-19 measures.

Bye Bye Morons clinched seven Césars including best film, director, cinematography (Alexis Kavyrchine), best original screenplay (Dupontel), best supporting actor (Nicolas Marié), best production design (Carlos Conti) and the fledgeling César des Lycéens, which is voted on by 1,500 high school students.

Chicago – Can a movie be too creative? Jean-Pierre Jeunet tests this theory with his ridiculously over-the-top “Micmacs,” a clever film that is almost too polished and refined to be effective. Of course, it looks great on Blu-ray but this giant Jeunet fan can’t help but think his style has finally trumped his substance.

As much fun as it can be, there are elements of “Micmacs” that simply don’t work. But would we feel the same way if it were a debut? Is it disappointing only in light of “Amelie,” “Delicatessen,” and “The City of Lost Children”? Film doesn’t exist in a vacuum and it’s impossible to ignore the fact that while this film is masterfully-designed, it’s lesser compared to its auteur’s previous works. Still, lesser Jeunet is still pretty quality in entertainment, especially in HD.

When it comes to odd and quirky films, you’re not going to get much more odd and quirky than Micmacs. The movie stars Jean-Pierre Marielle, Nicolas Marié, André Dussollier, Dany Boon and is directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet who previously brought us French classic, Amelie. How Jeunet’s mind works is fascinating and intriguing and you have to wonder if anyone else could have pulled off the masterpiece that is, Micmacs other than Jeunet.

Micmacs focuses on Dany Boon’s character, Bazil who has a rather large gripe with war and weapons in general after his father is killed by a landmine making him an orphan and then later in life, he’s inadvertently shot in the head! Managing to survive this, and through a serious of rather strange and comedic events, he discovers that the bullet lodged in his brain and the landmine that killed his father were both...

Sony Pictures Classics have provided us with poster, photos and trailer from Micmacs.

Micmacs is a 2009 film by French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie, The City of Lost Children, A Very Long Engagement) that premiered on 15 September 2009 at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival as a gala screening at Roy Thompson Hall. Its original French title is Micmacs à tire-larigot, (‘Non-stop madness’). The film is billed as a “satire on the world arms trade”.

Micmacs synopsis

First, it was a mine that exploded in the middle of the Moroccan desert. Years later, it was a stray bullet that lodged in his brain… Bazil (Dany Boon) doesn’t have much luck with weapons. The first made him an orphan, the second holds him on the brink of sudden and instant death.

Having tried, and failed, to expand on his tricksy, inventive style with A Very Long Engagement, the Amélie director is firmly back in his borderline-autistic comfort zone here, with a terminally whimsical caper comedy. Boon leads a plot to stitch up a pair of arms manufacturers with the help of a gang of zany, junk-recycling misfits, and while you can admire the construction, the characters are one dimensional and emotional engagement is negligible. It's like watching the workings of an elaborate clock.

Capitalism: A Love Story (12A)

(Michael Moore, 2009, Us) 127 mins

Moore tilts at the Us financial industry this time, but rather than skewering the culprits of the banking crisis, this uneven doc pricks the subject here and there and hopes it all adds up to something. Some of it hits home, but too much is business as usual.

Judging by the trailer, this has got all the qualities audiences have come to love in Jeunet's previous films, a fantastical comedy from a world class director that is sure to not disappoint. Is it better to live with a bullet lodged in your brain, even if it means you might drop dead any time or would you rather have the bullet taken out and live the rest of your life as a vegetable? Are zebras white with black stripes or black with white stripes?...

Why there were a few scattered empty seats left at the world premiere of "Micmacs," I don't know. This is Jean-Pierre Jeunet, dammit, and after putting the excess of "A Very Long Engagement" behind him, he arrived in Toronto with a leaner and meaner comedy that seems to have been designed as a playground for his visual ingenuity and boundless imagination.

His partner in crime, the French star Dany Boon ("My Best Friend"), stars as Bazil, a video store clerk who's introduced to us playfully mouthing along to the dialogue in "The Big Sleep" before a freak gun accident leaves him with a bullet lodged in his brain. (The operating surgeon flips a coin to decide whether to keep it in or remove it and risk putting him into a coma.) Already having lost his father to a landmine during war, Bazil becomes an unlikely peace activist, igniting a feud...

I don't put much stock in movie nostalgia, but I still remember how thrilled I was by my first viewing of Delicatessen over fifteen years ago. Even with the weak elements of the movie taken into consideration, the world realized within is still one I like going back to. So I've been eager for actual footage from Micmacs A Tire-Larigot, the first film from Jean-Pierre Jeunet since 2004's A Very Long Engagement. And now thanks to Twitch we have a teaser, after the jump. The film is being called a satire on the world arms trade. (And hopefully a better one than, say, Nic Cage's Lord of War.) Oh, some may also remember Alien: Resurrection, not sure where most of you fall on that one. Well, the wait for the next Jeunet feature is not too far off as his next film Micmacs a tire-larigot is set to hit French theaters on October 29, and hopefully not too long after here in the States with Warner Bros. currently holding distribution rights. The film is described as a satirical comedy looking at the world of weapons merchants and is said to be in the same vein as Amelie and Delicatessen. I have found a variety of plotlines around the Internet, but they are either extremely simplified or in French.
