Initially aimed to be an account, before studying at the Birmingham School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art. On stage from 1940 with the Birmingham Repertory. Theatre and moved to the Bristol Old Vic and the London Old Vic and made his West End debut in "The Apple Cart" in , 1953, with Noel Coward. A versatile performer in anything from comedy to Shakespeare .His television work includes Mrs Thursday, Sergeant Cork and Poldark A Member of the Old Vic from 1961. Vice-president of Equity, 1969-73, and president in 1975.
