  • Trivia
At the end of World War II, Mandlová was accused of collaboration with the occupying German forces. She was arrested in May 1945 and was practically lynched, only to be saved by the prison warden who happened to be a fan of hers. The charges against her were two-folds. Firstly she went to Germany at Josef Goebbel's invitation to star in a German picture (where she was re-christened Lil Adina; but the most serious charge of all was an alleged liaison with Nazi official Karl Hermann Frank, Secretary of State of the Reich Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. Fearing for her life, she decided to leave Czechoslovakia. She wed a British pilot in 1947 and emigrated to the United Kingdom where she tried to revive her career but with very little success. Suffering from tuberculosis, she spent the next few months recuperating in a Swiss sanatorium. Back in the UK, she supported herself by working as an assistant costume designer when she met designer Bill Pearson, whom she later married. The couple settled in Malta. Mandlová returned to her native country shortly before her death in 1991.
