Biography

    • This versatile artist, who had spent his 20's in New Zealand farming sheep, became novelist, playwright and film exhibitor on his return to Britain in 1918. Eventually he would observe success with Le lien brisé (1928), which he directed and acted in and which was based on his own novel and play. He is better remembered, however, for his character portrayals of oily types, many of them upper-crust cads - such as Cardinal Richelieu in Les trois louf'quetaires (1939). (In his Hollywood debut, he had portrayed King Louis XIII in the 1935 version of that same Dumas classic.)

Trivia

  • According to Ben MacIntyre in "Double Cross: The True Story of the D-Day Spies", Miles Mander looked so much like Bernard Law Montgomery that British intelligence tried to recruit him as the Field Marshall's double. Mander was too tall, so they had to find someone else: Meyrick Clifton James.
  • He was born into fairly wealthy stock, his family being the owners of Wightwick Manor in Wolverhampton.
  • He appeared in three unrelated "Three Musketeers" films, each time in a different role: The Three Musketeers (1935) as King Louis XIII, the comedy remake Les trois louf'quetaires (1939) as Cardinal Richelieu and L'homme au masque de fer (1939) as Aramis.
  • Along with Esme V. Chaplin, he is one of only two actors to appear in both Meurtre (1930) and its German language remake Mary (1931).
  • Father: Samuel Theodore Mander; Mother: Flora Elvira Saint-Clair Paint.
