Karl Malone

Trivia

Karl Malone

Edit
  • Surpassed Wilt Chamberlain's 31,419 points to become second only to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on the NBA's career scoring list. (December 5, 2000)
  • Credits former Utah Jazz coach Frank Layden with making him the player he became. After Layden resigned midway through the 1988-1989 season, Karl played the rest of the season with "Frank" written on the heels of his basketball shoes as a tribute.
  • Admitted to fathering twins (Cheryl and Daryl Ford, born June 1981) with Bonita Ford, but denies paternity of a third child (NFL offensive tackle Demetress Bell) with Gloria Bell, born three years later. (1998)
  • LA Lakers great Magic Johnson offered to un-retire his #32 jersey so Malone could wear it once he was signed to the Lakers because Malone wore 32 his entire tenure in Utah. Malone respectfully declined and chose #11.
  • His retired jersey #32 at Salt Lake City. (March 2006)
  • (July 16) Signed with the Los Angeles Lakers for the veteran's minimum salary of $1.5 million. (2003)
  • Malone's four children with his wife: Kadee (born November 8, 1991), Kylee (born April 7, 1993), Karl Jr., (born May 8, 1995) and Karlee (born May 29, 1998).
  • Member of the 1992 (Dream Team) and 1996 gold medal US Basketball team.
  • Was one of the most vocal protesters against Earvin Magic Johnson coming back to play in the NBA for the 1992-1993 season, the season after Magic was forced to retire after testing positive for AIDS.
  • Phil Jackson stated in his memoirs that Malone was the only player he didn't hug goodbye at the end of the disappointing 2003-2004 season, despite the fact that a feud or tension was never reported or mentioned between the two.
  • Became the oldest player (40 years) in NBA history to record a "triple double", with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists in a November 30, 2003, game against the San Antonio Spurs. He also became the oldest player ever to score 30 points in a post-season game in 2004 against the Houston Rockets.
  • Settled both paternity cases (Ford twins and Demetress Bell) out of court without acknowledging paternity in either.
  • Wrestled one match on a WCW Pay Per View teaming with Diamond Dallas Page to take on Hulk Hogan and Dennis Rodman.
  • Has ten grandchildren.
  • Plays for the Utah Jazz of the National Basketball Association. He was drafted by the Jazz in 1985 and has appeared in the NBA All-Star 11 times. Acting is one of many sidelines to Karl's NBA career.
  • Member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
  • Is not related to fellow NBA player Moses Malone even though they have the same last name.
